Quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine the ring structure of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points in the complex plane. The operator of quantum multiplication by the divisor class is a nonstationary deformation of the quantum Calogero-Sutherland many-body system. A relationship between the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme and the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local curves is proven.
Optimal stopping in a two-sided secretary problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the "secretary problem", well-known in the theory of optimal stopping, an employer is about to interview a maximum of N secretaries about which she has no prior information. Chow et al. proved that with an optimal strategy the expected rank of the chosen secretary tends to approximately 3.87. We study a two-sided game-theoretic version of this optimal stopping problem, where men search for a woman to marry at the same time as women search for a man to marry. We find that in the unique subgame perfect equilibrium, the expected rank grows as the square root of N and that, surprisingly, the leading coefficient is exactly 1. We also discuss some possible variations.

Families of unsatisfiable k-CNF formulas with few occurrences per variable
Published • View PublicationBIB
(k,s)-SAT is the satisfiability problem restricted to instances where each clause has exactly k literals and every variable occurs at most s times. It is known that there exists a function f such that for s\leq f(k) all (k,s)-SAT instances are satisfiable, but (k,f(k)+1)-SAT is already NP-complete (k\geq 3). The best known lower and upper bounds on f(k) are Omega(2^k/k) and O(2^k/k^a), where a=\log_3 4 - 1 = 0.26.... We prove that f(k) = O(2^k \cdot \log k/k), which is tight up to a \log k factor.

Information on some recent applications of umbral extensions to discrete mathematics
Published in Review Bulletin of Calcutta Mathematical Society Vol. 13 (2005) 1-10 • Search Publication
At the first part of the paper we show how specific umbral extensions of the Stirling numbers of the second kind result in new type of Dobinski-like formulas. In the second part among others one recovers how and why Ward solution of uncountable family of extended difference calculus nonhomogeneous equations extends to Ward-Appell polynomials case . Illustrative specifications to q-calculus case and fibonomial calculus case are made explicit due to the usage of the so called upside down notation for objects of extended finite operator calculus .

A majorization bound for the eigenvalues of some graph Laplacians
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is conjectured that the Laplacian spectrum of a graph is majorized by its conjugate degree sequence. In this paper, we prove that this majorization holds for a class of graphs including trees. We also show that a generalization of this conjecture to graphs with Dirichlet boundary conditions is equivalent to the original conjecture.

On Ideal Generators for Affine Schubert Varieties
We consider a certain class of Schubert varieties of the affine Grassmannian of type A. By embedding a Schubert variety into a finite-dimensional Grassmannian, we construct an explicit basis of sections of the basic line bundle by restricting certain Plücker co-ordinates. As a consequence, we write an explicit set of generators for the degree-one part of the ideal of the finite-dimensional embedding. This in turn gives a set of generators for the degree-one part of the ideal defining the affine Grassmannian inside the infinite Grassmannian which we conjecture to be a complete set of ideal generators. We apply our results to the orbit closures of nilpotent matrices. We describe (in a characteristic-free way) a filtration for the coordinate ring of a nilpotent orbit closure and state a conjecture on the SL(n)-module structures of the constituents of this filtration.

Why Delannoy numbers?
Published in Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 135, 1 (11/2005) 40-54 • View PublicationBIB
This article is not a research paper, but a little note on the history of combinatorics: We present here a tentative short biography of Henri Delannoy, and a survey of his most notable works. This answers to the question raised in the title, as these works are related to lattice paths enumeration, to the so-called Delannoy numbers, and were the first general way to solve Ballot-like problems. These numbers appear in probabilistic game theory, alignments of DNA sequences, tiling problems, temporal representation models, analysis of algorithms and combinatorial structures.
Generating Functions For Kernels of Digraphs (Enumeration & Asymptotics for Nim Games)
Published in Proceedings of FPSAC'04 (2004) 91-105 • Search Publication
In this article, we study directed graphs (digraphs) with a coloring constraint due to Von Neumann and related to Nim-type games. This is equivalent to the notion of kernels of digraphs, which appears in numerous fields of research such as game theory, complexity theory, artificial intelligence (default logic, argumentation in multi-agent systems), 0-1 laws in monadic second order logic, combinatorics (perfect graphs)... Kernels of digraphs lead to numerous difficult questions (in the sense of NP-completeness, #P-completeness). However, we show here that it is possible to use a generating function approach to get new informations: we use technique of symbolic and analytic combinatorics (generating functions and their singularities) in order to get exact and asymptotic results, e.g. for the existence of a kernel in a circuit or in a unicircuit digraph. This is a first step toward a generatingfunctionology treatment of kernels, while using, e.g., an approach "a la Wright". Our method could be applied to more general "local coloring constraints" in decomposable combinatorial structures.
Brill-Gordan Loci, Transvectants and an Analogue of the Foulkes Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combining a selection of tools from modern algebraic geometry, representation theory, the classical invariant theory of binary forms, together with explicit calculations with hypergeometric series and Feynman diagrams, we obtain the following interrelated results. A Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound and a projective normality result for the locus of hypersufaces that are equally supported on two hyperplanes. The surjectivity of an equivariant map between two plethystic compositions of symmetric powers; a statement which is reminiscent of the Foulkes-Howe conjecture. The nonvanishing of even transvectants of exact powers of generic binary forms. The nonvanishing of a collection of symmetric functions defined by sums over magic squares and transportation matrices with nonnegative integer entries. An explicit set of generators, in degree three, for the ideal of the coincident root locus of binary forms with only two roots of equal multiplicity.
Multiplicities in the mixed trace cocharacter sequence of two $3\times 3$ matrices
Published in International J. Algebra and Computations 16 (2006), No. 2, 275-285 • View PublicationBIB
We find explicitly the multiplicities in the (mixed) trace cocharacter sequence of two $3\times 3$ matrices over a field of characteristic 0 and show that asymptotically they behave as polynomials of seventh degree. As a consequence we obtain also the multiplicities of certain irreducible characters in the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities of $3\times 3$ matrices.

New polytopes from products
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a new 2-parameter family E_mn of self-dual 2-simple and 2-simplicial 4-polytopes, with flexible geometric realisations. E_44 is the 24-cell. For large m,n the f-vectors have ``fatness'' close to 6. The E_t-construction of Paffenholz and Ziegler applied to products of polygons yields cellular spheres with the combinatorial structure of E_mn. Here we prove polytopality of these spheres. More generally, we construct polytopal realisations for spheres obtained from the E_t-construction applied to products of polytopes in any dimension d>=3, if these polytopes satisfy some consistency conditions. We show that the projective realisation space of E_33 is at least nine dimensional and that of E_44 at least four dimensional. This proves that the 24-cell is not projectively unique. All E_mn for relatively prime m,n>= 5 have automorphisms of their face lattice not induced by an affine transformation of any geometric realisation. The group Z_m x Z_n generated by rotations in the two polygons is a subgroup of the automorphisms of the face lattice of E_mn. However, there are only five pairs (m,n) for which this subgroup is geometrically realisable.

On random $\pm 1$ matrices: Singularity and Determinant
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms 28 (2006), 1-23 • View PublicationBIB
This papers contains two results concerning random $n \times n$ Bernoulli matrices. First, we show that with probability tending to one the determinant has absolute value $\sqrt {n!} \exp(O(\sqrt(n log n)))$. Next, we prove a new upper bound $.939^n$ on the probability that the matrix is singular. We also give some generalizations to other random matrix models.

Simple Permutations Mix Even Better
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the random composition of a small family of O(n^3) simple permutations on {0,1}^n. Specifically we ask how many randomly selected simple permutations need be composed to yield a permutation that is close to k-wise independent. We improve on the results of Gowers 1996 and Hoory, Magen, Myers and Rackoff 2004, and show that up to a polylogarithmic factor, n^2*k^2 compositions of random permutations from this family suffice. In addition, our results give an explicit construction of a degree O(n^3) Cayley graph of the alternating group of 2^n objects with a spectral gap Omega(2^{-n}/n^2), which is a substantial improvement over previous constructions.
Trace identities from identities for determinants
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 411 (2005), 328-342. • View PublicationBIB
We present new identities for determinants of matrices $(A_{i,j})$ with entries $A_{i,j}$ equal to $a_{i,j}$ or $a_{i,0}a_{0,j}-a_{i,j}$, where the $a_{i,j}$'s are indeterminates. We show that these identities are behind trace identities for $SL(2,\Bbb C)$ matrices found earlier by Magnus in his study of trace algebras.

The number of vertices of a Fano polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let X be a complex, Gorenstein, Q-factorial, toric Fano variety. We prove two conjectures on the maximal Picard number of X in terms of its dimension and its pseudo-index, and characterize the boundary cases. Equivalently, we determine the maximal number of vertices of a simplicial reflexive polytope.
Jack superpolynomials: physical and combinatorial definitions
Published in Czech.J.Phys. 54 (2004) 1223-1228 • View PublicationBIB
Jack superpolynomials are eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the quantum trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland. They are orthogonal with respect to the scalar product, dubbed physical, that is naturally induced by this quantum-mechanical problem. But Jack superpolynomials can also be defined more combinatorially, starting from the multiplicative bases of symmetric superpolynomials, enforcing orthogonality with respect to a one-parameter deformation of the combinatorial scalar product. Both constructions turns out to be equivalent. This provides strong support for the correctness of the various underlying constructions and for the pivotal role of Jack superpolynomials in the theory of symmetric superpolynomials.

A note on special duality triads and their operator valued counterparts
We shall work with the so called duality triads following kwaśniewski. In particular in this note we propose some extensions of them - hence we choose such special class of triads that admit - all at once - a unified combinatorial interpretation in a way konvalina does. The proposed extensions contain also definition of operator valued arrays of konvalina-like coefficients - for the sake of future investigation and applications.
