Applying results from partial difference sets, quadratic forms, and recent results of Brouwer and Van Dam, we construct the first known amorphic association scheme with negative Latin square type graphs and whose underlying set is a non-elementary abelian 2-group. We give a simple proof of a result of Hamilton that generalizes Brouwer's result. We use multiple distinct quadratic forms to construct amorphic association schemes with a large number of classes.
The Rotor-Router Model
Building on earlier work of Diaconis and Fulton (1991) and Lawler, Bramson, and Griffeath (1992), Propp in 2001 defined a deterministic analogue of internal diffusion-limited aggregation. This growth model is a "convergent game" of the sort studied by Eriksson (1996). In one dimension, we show that the model is equivalent to a simple dynamical system with three integer-valued parameters; an invariant of this dynamical system yields links between the behavior of the system and diophantine approximation of quadratic irrationals. In two dimensions, we give constraints on the shape of the occupied region, as well as evidence for the proposition that the asymptotic shape of the boundary, suitably rescaled as time goes to infinity, is a circle. While the rotor-router model displays many of the same intriguing features as the Bak-Tang-Weisenfeld abelian sandpile model, we suggest that the new model is likely to be easier to analyze rigorously.
Fractal Sequences and Restricted Nim
The Grundy number of an impartial game G is the size of the unique Nim heap equal to G. We introduce a new variant of Nim, Restricted Nim, which restricts the number of stones a player may remove from a heap in terms of the size of the heap. Certain classes of Restricted Nim are found to produce sequences of Grundy numbers with a self-similar fractal structure. Extending work of C. Kimberling, we obtain new characterizations of these "fractal sequences" and give a bijection between these sequences and certain upper-triangular arrays. As a special case we obtain the game of Serial Nim, in which the Nim heaps are ordered from left to right, and players can move only in the leftmost nonempty heap.

The Ehrhart polynomial of an integral convex polytope counts the number of lattice points in dilates of the polytope. In math.CO/0402148, the authors conjectured that for any cyclic polytope with integral parameters, the Ehrhart polynomial of it is equal to its volume plus the Ehrhart polynomial of its lower envelope and proved the case when the dimension d = 2. In our article, we prove the conjecture for any dimension.

We give an explicit combinatorial description of the multiplicity as well as the Hilbert function of the tangent cone at any point on a Schubert variety in the symplectic Grassmannian.
Cover Pebbling Hypercubes
Given a graph G and a configuration C of pebbles on the vertices of G, a pebbling step removes two pebbles from one vertex and places one pebble on an adjacent vertex. The cover pebbling number g=g(G) is the minimum number so that every configuration of g pebbles has the property that, after some sequence of pebbling steps, every vertex has a pebble on it. We prove that the cover pebbling number of the d-dimensional hypercube Q^d equals 3^d.
Cover pebbling numbers and bounds for certain families of graphs
Given a configuration of pebbles on the vertices of a graph, a pebbling move is defined by removing two pebbles from some vertex and placing one pebble on an adjacent vertex. The cover pebbling number of a graph, gamma(G), is the smallest number of pebbles such that through a sequence of pebbling moves, a pebble can eventually be placed on every vertex simultaneously, no matter how the pebbles are initially distributed. The cover pebbling number for complete multipartite graphs and wheel graphs is determined. We also prove a sharp bound for gamma(G) given the diameter and number of vertices of G.

In this paper, we give a simple combinatorial explanation of a formula of A. Postnikov relating bicolored rooted trees to bicolored binary trees. We also present generalized formulas for the number of labeled k-ary trees, rooted labeled trees, and labeled plane trees.

Let {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k (k>1) be a finite system of residue classes with the moduli n_1,...,n_k distinct. By means of algebraic integers we show that the range of the covering function w(x)=|{1\le s\le k: x=a_s (mod n_s)}| is not contained in any residue class with modulus greater one. In particular, the values of w(x) cannot have the same parity.

In this paper we determine a number of meaningful compositions of higher order of a set of functions, which is considered in Malesevic (1998), in implicit and explicit form. Results which are obtained are applied to the vector analysis in order to determine the number of meaningful differential operations of higher order.
Counting Lattice Paths By Gessel Pairs
We count a large class of lattice paths by using factorizations of free monoids. Besides the classical lattice paths counting problems related to Catalan numbers, we give a new approach to the problem of counting walks on the slit plane (walks avoid a half line) that was first solved by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We also solve a problem about walks in the half plane avoiding a half line by subsequently applying the factorizations of two different Gessel pairs, giving a generalization of a result of Bousquet-Mélou.
Packing sets of patterns

Packing density is a permutation occurrence statistic which describes the maximal number of permutations of a given type that can occur in another permutation. In this article we focus on containment of sets of permutations. Although this question has been tangentially considered previously, this is the first systematic study of it. We find the packing density for various special sets of permutations and study permutation and pattern co-occurrence.
Partition functions and graphs: A combinatorial approach
Although symmetry methods and analysis are a necessary ingredient in every physicist's toolkit, rather less use has been made of combinatorial methods. One exception is in the realm of Statistical Physics, where the calculation of the partition function, for example, is essentially a combinatorial problem. In this talk we shall show that one approach is via the normal ordering of the second quantized operators appearing in the partition function. This in turn leads to a combinatorial graphical description, giving essentially Feynman-type graphs associated with the theory. We illustrate this methodology by the explicit calculation of two model examples, the free boson gas and a superfluid boson model. We show how the calculation of partition functions can be facilitated by knowledge of the combinatorics of the boson normal ordering problem; this naturally gives rise to the Bell numbers of combinatorics. The associated graphical representation of these numbers gives a perturbation expansion in terms of a sequence of graphs analogous to zero - dimensional Feynman diagrams.

A set $S\subseteq V$ is called an {\em $q^+$-set} ({\em $q^-$-set}, respectively) if $S$ has at least two vertices and, for every $u\in S$, there exists $v\in S, v\neq u$ such that $N^+(u)\cap N^+(v)\neq \emptyset$ ($N^-(u)\cap N^-(v)\neq \emptyset$, respectively). A digraph $D$ is called {\em s-quadrangular} if, for every $q^+$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^+(u)\cap N^+(v): u\neq v, u,v\in S\}|\ge |S|$ and, for every $q^-$-set $S$, we have $|\cup \{N^-(u)\cap N^-(v): u,v\in S)\}\ge |S|$. We conjecture that every strong s-quadrangular digraph has a Hamilton cycle and provide some support for this conjecture.

We exhibit an identity of abstract simplicial complexes between the well-studied complex of trees and the reduced minimal nested set complex of the partition lattice. We conclude that the order complex of the partition lattice can be obtained from the complex of trees by a sequence of stellar subdivisions. We provide an explicit cohomology basis for the complex of trees that emerges naturally from this context.
Motivated by these results, we review the generalization of complexes of trees to complexes of $k$-trees by Hanlon, and we propose yet another, in the context of nested set complexes more natural, generalization.

We construct a subalgebra of dimension $2.3^{n-1}$ of the group algebra of a Weyl group of type $B_n$ containing its Solomon descent's algebra but also the Solomon's descent algebra of the symmetric group. This lead us to a construction of the irreducible characters of the hyperoctahedral groups by using a generalized plactic equivalence.

We consider a deterministic discrete-time model of fire spread introduced by Hartnell [1995] and the problem of minimizing the number of burnt vertices when deploying a limited number of firefighters per timestep. We consider the process occurring on the d-dimensional square lattice for d>=3, and we prove several results, including two conjectures of Wang and Moeller [2002].

We define and study the Tutte polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement. We introduce a method for computing it by solving an enumerative problem in a finite field. For specific arrangements, the computation of Tutte polynomials is then reduced to certain related enumerative questions. As a consequence, we obtain new formulas for the generating functions enumerating alternating trees, labelled trees, semiorders and Dyck paths.

In this paper, we establish a residue theorem for Malcev-Neumann series that requires few constraints, and includes previously known combinatorial residue theorems as special cases. Our residue theorem identifies the residues of two formal series that are related by a change of variables. We obtain simple conditions for when a change of variables is possible, and find that the two related formal series in fact belong to two different fields of Malcev-Neumann series. The multivariate Lagrange inversion formula is easily derived and Dyson's conjecture is given a new proof and generalized.
