Treewidth versus clique number. IV. Tree-independence number of graphs excluding an induced star
Many recent works address the question of characterizing induced obstructions to bounded treewidth. In 2022, Lozin and Razgon completely answered this question for graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. Their result also implies a characterization of graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs that are $(tw,ω)$-bounded, that is, treewidth can only be large due to the presence of a large clique. This condition is known to be satisfied for any graph class with bounded tree-independence number, a graph parameter introduced independently by Yolov in 2018 and by Dallard, Milanič, and Štorgel in 2024. Dallard et al. conjectured that $(tw,ω)$-boundedness is actually equivalent to bounded tree-independence number. We address this conjecture in the context of graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs and prove it for the case of graph classes excluding an induced star. We also prove it for subclasses of the class of line graphs, determine the exact values of the tree-independence numbers of line graphs of complete graphs and line graphs of complete bipartite graphs, and characterize the tree-independence number of $P_4$-free graphs, which implies a linear-time algorithm for its computation. Applying the algorithmic framework provided in a previous paper of the series leads to polynomial-time algorithms for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in an infinite family of graph classes.

On the Idempotent Graph of Matrix Ring
Let F be a finite field and R = M2(F) be 2x2 matrix ring over F. In this paper, we explicitly determine all the idempotents in R. Using these idempotents, we study the idempotent graph of R whose vertex set is the set of non-trivial idempotents in R and two idempotents e, f are adjacent if ef = 0 or fe = 0. It is proved that the idempotent graph of R is connected regular graph with diameter 2. Its girth is also characterized. Further, we determine the Wiener and Harary index of the idempotent graph of R.
Sums of Weighted Lattice Points of Polytopes
We study the problem of counting lattice points of a polytope that are weighted by an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a family of parametric polytopes. As applications one can compute integrals and maximum values of such quasi-polynomials, as well as obtain new identities in representation theory. These topics have been of great interest to Michèle Vergne since the late 1980's. Our new contribution is a result that transforms weighted sums into unweighted sums, even when the weights are very general quasipolynomials. In some cases it leads to faster integration over a polytope. We can create new algebraic identities and conjectures in algebraic combinatorics and number theory.

On a recent extension of a family of biprojective APN functions
APN functions play a big role as primitives in symmetric cryptography as building blocks that yield optimal resistance to differential attacks. In this note, we consider a recent extension of a biprojective APN family by Göloğlu defined on $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$. We show that this generalization yields functions equivalent to Göloğlu's original family if $3\nmid m$. If $3|m$ we show exactly how many inequivalent APN functions this new family contains. We also show that the family has the minimal image set size for an APN function and determine its Walsh spectrum, hereby settling some open problems. In our proofs, we leverage a group theoretic technique recently developed by Göloğlu and the author in conjunction with a group action on the set of projective polynomials.

Stable Menus of Public Goods: A Matching Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a matching problem between agents and public goods, in settings without monetary transfers. Since goods are public, they have no capacity constraints. There is no exogenously defined budget of goods to be provided. Rather, each provided good must justify its cost by being utilized by sufficiently many agents, leading to strong complementarities in the "preferences" of goods. Furthermore, goods that are in high demand given other already-provided goods must also be provided. The question of the existence of a stable solution (a menu of public goods to be provided) exhibits a rich combinatorial structure. We uncover sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for guaranteeing the existence of a stable solution, and derive both positive and negative results for strategyproof stable matching.
Paired $(n-1)$-to-$(n-1)$ disjoint path covers in bipartite transposition-like graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 376 (2025), 449-461 • View PublicationBIB
A paired $k$-to-$k$ disjoint path cover of a graph $G$ is a collection of pairwise disjoint path subgraphs $P_1,P_2,\dotsc,P_k$ such that each $P_i$ has prescribed vertices $s_i$ and $t_i$ as endpoints and the union of $P_1,P_2,\dotsc,P_k$ contains all vertices of $G$. In this paper, we introduce bipartite transposition-like graphs, which are inductively constructed from lower ranked bipartite transposition-like graphs. We show that every rank $n$ bipartite transposition-like graph $G$ admit a paired $(n-1)$-to-$(n-1)$ disjoint path cover for all choices of $S=\{s_1,s_2,\dotsc,s_{n-1}\}$ and $T=\{t_1,t_2,\dotsc,t_{n-1}\}$, provided that $S$ is in one partite set of $G$ and $T$ is in the other.

A lower bound on the saturation number and a strengthening for triangle-free graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 32(3) (2025), #P3.14 • View PublicationBIB
The saturation number $\operatorname{sat}(n, H)$ of a graph $H$ and positive integer $n$ is the minimum size of a graph of order $n$ which does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ but to which the addition of any edge creates such a subgraph. Erdős, Hajnal, and Moon first studied saturation numbers of complete graphs, and Cameron and Puleo introduced a general lower bound on $\operatorname{sat}(n,H)$. In this paper, we present another lower bound on $\operatorname{sat}(n, H)$ with strengthenings for graphs $H$ in several classes, all of which include the class of triangle-free graphs. Demonstrating its effectiveness, we determine the saturation numbers of diameter-$3$ trees up to an additive constant; these are double stars $S_{s,t}$ of order $s + t$ whose central vertices have degrees $s$ and $t$. Faudree, Faudree, Gould, and Jacobson determined that $\operatorname{sat}(n, S_{t,t}) = (t-1)n/2 + O(1)$. We prove that $\operatorname{sat}(n,S_{s,t}) = (st+s)n/(2t+4) + O(1)$ when $s < t$. We also apply our lower bound to caterpillars and demonstrate an upper bound on the saturation numbers of certain diameter-$4$ caterpillars.

Permutations with a Given X-Descent Set
Building on the work of Grinberg and Stanley, we begin a systematic study of permutations with a prescribed $X$-descent set. In particular, for a set $X \subseteq \mathbb{N}^2$, and $I \subseteq [n-1]$, we study the permutations $π\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ whose $X$-descent set is precisely $I$, meaning $(π_i,π_{i+1}) \in X$ precisely when $i \in I$. The central focus is enumerating these permutations for a fixed $X,I$ and $n$: this count is denoted by $d_X(I;n)$. We derive a recursion which under expected conditions simplifies to a binomial-type recurrence determined entirely by the values $d_X(\emptyset;n)$. This extends the work of Díaz-Lopez et al.\ on descent polynomials. The resulting reduction shows that the general statistic $d_X(I;n)$ is typically governed by the ``descent-free'' quantities $d_X(\emptyset;n)$, motivating a closer analysis of these numbers. We observe that $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ enumerates Hamiltonian paths in a directed graph canonically associated to $X$. We then record several families of sets $X$ for which $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ is explicit or effectively computable. This includes families with periodicity for which transfer matrix methods apply, and families with succession-type relations where inclusion-exclusion applies. We then investigate the typical behavior of $d_X(\emptyset;n)$ from a probabilistic perspective.

Every connected graph admits a local antimagic orientation and almost every graph admits an antimagic orientation
Published • View PublicationBIB
An undirected graph $G$ is said to admit an antimagic orientation if there exist an orientation $D$ and a bijection between $E(G)$ and $\{1,2,\ldots,|E(G)|\}$ such that any two vertices have distinct vertex sums, where the vertex sum of a vertex is the sum of the labels of the in-edges minus that of the out-edges incident to the vertex. It is conjectured by Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. A weak version of this problem is to require the distinct vertex sums only for the adjacent vertices. In that case, we say the graph admits a local antimagic orientation. Chang, Jing, and Wang~\cite{CJW20} conjectured that every connected graph admits a local antimagic orientation. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Chang et al., and show that almost every graph satisfies the conjecture of Hefetz et al.

The common basis complex and the partial decomposition poset
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2024, Issue 18, September 2024, Pages 12746-12760 • View PublicationBIB
For a finite-dimensional vector space $V$, the common basis complex of $V$ is the simplicial complex whose vertices are the proper non-zero subspaces of $V$, and $σ$ is a simplex if and only if there exists a basis $B$ of $V$ that contains a basis of $S$ for all $S\in σ$. This complex was introduced by Rognes in 1992 in connection with stable buildings. In this article, we prove that the common basis complex is homotopy equivalent to the proper part of the poset of partial direct sum decompositions of $V$. Moreover, we establish this result in a more general combinatorial context, including the case of free groups, matroids, vector spaces with non-degenerate sesquilinear forms, and free modules over commutative Hermite rings, such as local rings or Dedekind domains.

Resilience of Rademacher chaos of low degree
The {\em resilience} of a Rademacher chaos is the maximum number of adversarial sign-flips that the chaos can sustain without having its largest atom probability significantly altered. Inspired by probabilistic lower-bound guarantees for the resilience of linear Rademacher chaos (aka. resilience of the Littlewood-Offord problem), obtained by Bandeira, Ferber, and Kwan (Advances in Mathematics, Vol. $319$, $2017$), we provide probabilistic lower-bound guarantees for the resilience of Rademacher chaos of arbitrary degree; these being most meaningful provided that the degree is constant.

Strong collapsibility of the arc complexes of orientable and non-orientable crowns
We prove that the arc complex of a polygon with a marked point in its interior is a strongly collapsible combinatorial ball. We also show that the arc complex of a Möbius strip, with finitely many marked points on its boundary, is a simplicially collapsible combinatorial ball but is not strongly collapsible.

On the spectrum of generalized H-join operation constrained by indexing maps -- I
Fix $m \in \mathbb N$. A new generalization of the $H$-join operation of a family of graphs $\{G_1, G_2, \dots, G_k\}$ constrained by indexing maps $I_1,I_2,\dots,I_k$ is introduced as $H_m$-join of graphs, where the maps $I_i:V(G_i)$ to $[m]$. Various spectra, including adjacency, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian spectra, of any graph $G$, which is a $H_m$-join of graphs is obtained by introducing the concept of $E$-main eigenvalues. More precisely, we deduce that in the case of adjacency spectra, there is an associated matrix $E_i$ of the graph $G_i$ such that a $E_i$-non-main eigenvalue of multiplicity $m_i$ of $A(G_i)$ carry forward as an eigenvalue for $A(G)$ with the same multiplicity $m_i$, while an $E_i$-main eigenvalue of multiplicity $m_i$ carry forward as an eigenvalue of $G$ with multiplicity at least $m_i - m$. As a corollary, the universal adjacency spectra of some families of graphs is obtained by realizing them as $H_m$-joins of graphs. As an application, infinite families of cospectral families of graphs are found.

Crossing number of graphs and $\mathsf{ΔY}$-move
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of double points over all generic immersions of the graph into the plane. In this paper we investigate the behavior of crossing number under a graph transformation, called $\mathsf{ΔY}$-move, on the complete graph $K_n$. Concretely it is shown that for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$, there exist a natural number $n$ and a sequence of $\mathsf{ΔY}$-moves $K_n\rightarrow G^{(1)}\rightarrow \cdots \rightarrow G^{(k)}$ which is decreasing with respect to the crossing number. We also discuss the decrease of crossing number for relatively small $n$.

Generating Plane Quadrangulations and Symmetry-preserving Operations on Maps
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Discrete Algorithms (November 15, 2024) dmtcs:13080 • View PublicationBIB
Lopsp-operations are operations on maps that are applied locally and are guaranteed to preserve all the orientation-preserving symmetries of maps. Well-known examples of such operations are dual, ambo, truncation, and leapfrog. They are described by plane 3-coloured triangulations with specific properties. We developed and implemented a program that can generate all lopsp-operations of a given size by reducing the problem of generating lopsp-operations to generating all plane quadrangulations that are not necessarily simple. We extended the program plantri to generate these quadrangulations.

Finding forest-orderings of tournaments is NP-complete
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a class of (undirected) graphs $\mathcal{C}$, we say that a Feedback Arc Set (FAS for short) $F$ is a $\mathcal{C}$-FAS if the graph induced by the edges of $F$ (forgetting their orientations) belongs to $\mathcal{C}$. We show that deciding if a tournament has a $\mathcal{C}$-FAS is NP-complete when $\mathcal{C}$ is the class of all forests. We are motivated by connections between $\mathcal{C}$-FAS and structural parameters of tournaments, such as the dichromatic number, the clique number of tournaments, and the strong Erdős-Hajnal property.
Paired coalition in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
\noindent A paired coalition in a graph $G=(V,E)$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $V_1$ and $V_2$, neither of which is a paired dominating set but whose union $V_1 \cup V_2$ is a paired dominating set. A paired coalition partition (abbreviated $pc$-partition) in a graph $G$ is a vertex partition $π= \lbrace V_1,V_2,\dots ,V_k \rbrace$ such that each set $V_i$ of $π$ is not a paired dominating set but forms a paired coalition with another set $V_j \in π$. The paired coalition graph $PCG(G,π) $ of the graph $G$ and the $pc$-partition $π$ of $G$, is the graph whose vertices correspond one-to-one with the sets of $π$, and two vertices $V_i$ and $V_j$ are adjacent in $PCG(G,π) $ if and only if their corresponding sets $V_i$ and $V_j$ form a paired coalition in $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of paired coalition partitions and paired coalition graphs. In particular, we determine the paired coalition number of paths and cycles, obtain some results on paired coalition partitions in trees and characterize pair coalition graphs of paths, cycles and trees. We also characterize triangle-free graphs $G$ with $PC(G)=n$ and unicyclic graphs $G$ with $PC(G)=n-2$.

On sequency-complete and sequency-ordered matrices
The concept of sequency holds a fundamental significance in signal analysis using Walsh basis functions. In this study, we closely examine the concept of sequency and explore the properties of sequency-complete and sequency-ordered matrices. We obtain results on cardinalities of sets containing sequency-complete and sequency-ordered matrices of arbitrary sizes. We present methods for obtaining interesting classes of sequency-complete and sequency-ordered matrices of arbitrary sizes. We also provide results on the sequencies of columns in tensor products involving two or more matrices.

Equidistant Circular Split Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Phylogenetic networks are generalizations of trees that allow for the modeling of non-tree like evolutionary processes. Split networks give a useful way to construct networks with intuitive distance structures induced from the associated split graph. We explore the polyhedral geometry of distance matrices built from circular split systems which have the added property of being equidistant. We give a characterization of the facet defining inequalities and the extreme rays of the cone of distances that arises from an equidistant network associated to any circular split network. We also explain a connection to the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope from geometric combinatorics.
Star-Forest Decompositions of Complete Graphs
We deal with the problem of decomposing a complete geometric graph into plane star-forests. In particular, we disprove a recent conjecture by Pach, Saghafian and Schnider by constructing for each $n$ a complete geometric graph on $n$ vertices which can be decomposed into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ plane star-forests. Additionally we prove that for even $n$, every decomposition of complete abstract graph on $n$ vertices into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ star-forests is composed of a perfect matching and $\frac{n}{2}$ star-forests with two edge-balanced components, which we call broken double stars.
