Quasimodular forms arising from Jacobi's theta function and special symmetric polynomials
Ramanujan derived a sequence of even weight $2n$ quasimodular forms $U_{2n}(q)$ from derivatives of Jacobi's weight $3/2$ theta function. Using the generating function for this sequence, one can construct sequences of quasimodular forms of all nonnegative integer weights with minimal input: a weight 1 modular form and a power series $F(X)$. Using the weight 1 form $θ(q)^2$ and $F(X)=\exp(X/2)$, we obtain a sequence $\{Y_n(q)\}$ of weight $n$ quasimodular forms on $Γ_0(4)$ whose symmetric function avatars $\widetilde{Y}_n(\pmb{x}^k)$ are the symmetric polynomials $T_n(\pmb{x}^k)$ that arise naturally in the study of syzygies of numerical semigroups. With this information, we settle two conjectures about the $T_n(\pmb{x}^k).$ Finally, we note that these polynomials are systematically given in terms of the Borel-Hirzebruch $\widehat{A}$-genus for spin manifolds, where one identifies power sum symmetric functions $p_i$ with Pontryagin classes.

Ramanujan's partition generating functions modulo $\ell$
For the partition function $p(n)$, Ramanujan proved the striking identities $$ P_5(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(5n+4)q^n =5\prod_{n\geq 1} \frac{\left(q^5;q^5\right)_{\infty}^5}{(q;q)_{\infty}^6}, $$ $$ P_7(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(7n+5)q^n =7\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^3}{(q;q)_{\infty}^4}+49q \prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^7}{(q;q)_{\infty}^8}, $$ where $(q;q)_{\infty}:=\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n).$ As these identities imply his celebrated congruences modulo 5 and 7, it is natural to seek, for primes $\ell \geq 5,$ closed form expressions of the power series $$ P_{\ell}(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(\ell n-δ_{\ell})q^n\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $δ_{\ell}:=\frac{\ell^2-1}{24}.$ In this paper, we prove that $$ P_{\ell}(q)\equiv c_{\ell} \frac{T_{\ell}(q)}{ (q^\ell; q^\ell )_\infty} \pmod{\ell}, $$ where $c_{\ell}\in \mathbb{Z}$ is explicit and $T_{\ell}(q)$ is the generating function for the Hecke traces of $\ell$-ramified values of special Dirichlet series for weight $\ell-1$ cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11, as there are no nontrivial cusp forms of weight 4, 6, and 10.

Do perfect powers repel partition numbers?
In 2013 Zhi-Wei Sun conjectured that $p(n)$ is never a power of an integer when $n>1.$ We confirm this claim in many cases. We also observe that integral powers appear to repel the partition numbers. If $k>1$ and $Δ_k(n)$ is the distance between $p(n)$ and the nearest $k$th power, then for every $d\geq 0$ we conjecture that there are at most finitely many $n$ for which $Δ_k(n)\leq d.$ More precisely, for every $\varepsilon>0,$ we conjecture that $$M_k(d):=\max\{n \ : \ Δ_k(n)\leq d\}=o( d^{\varepsilon}).$$ In $k$-power aspect with $d$ fixed, we also conjecture that if $k$ is sufficiently large, then $$ M_k(d)=\max \left\{ n \ : \ p(n)-1\leq d\right\}. $$ In other words, $1$ generally appears to be the closest $k$th power among the partition numbers.

Pentagonal number recurrence relations for $p(n)$
We revisit Euler's partition function recurrence, which asserts, for integers $n\geq 1,$ that $$ p(n)=p(n-1)+p(n-2)-p(n-5)-p(n-7)+\dots = \sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}} (-1)^{k+1} p(n-ω(k)), $$ where $ω(m):=(3m^2+m)/2$ is the $m$th pentagonal number. We prove that this classical result is the $ν=0$ case of an infinite family of ``pentagonal number'' recurrences. For each $ν\geq 0,$ we prove for positive $n$ that $$ p(n)=\frac{1}{g_ν(n,0)}\left(α_ν\cdot σ_{2ν-1}(n)+ \mathrm{Tr}_{2ν}(n) +\sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}} (-1)^{k+1} g_ν(n,k)\cdot p(n-ω(k))\right), $$ where $σ_{2ν-1}(n)$ is a divisor function, $\mathrm{Tr}_{2ν}(n)$ is the $n$th weight $2ν$ Hecke trace of values of special twisted quadratic Dirichlet series, and each $g_ν(n,k)$ is a polynomial in $n$ and $k.$ The $ν=6$ case can be viewed as a partition theoretic formula for Ramanujan's tau-function, as we have $$ \mathrm{Tr}_{12}(n)=-\frac{33108590592}{691}\cdot τ(n). $$

Derivatives of theta functions as Traces of Partition Eisenstein series
In his "lost notebook'', Ramanujan used iterated derivatives of two theta functions to define sequences of $q$-series $\{U_{2t}(q)\}$ and $\{V_{2t}(q)\}$ that he claimed to be quasimodular. We give the first explicit proof of this claim by expressing them in terms of "partition Eisenstein series'', extensions of the classical Eisenstein series $E_{2k}(q)$ defined by $$λ=(1^{m_1}, 2^{m_2},\dots, n^{m_n}) \vdash n \ \ \ \ \ \longmapsto \ \ \ \ \ E_λ(q):= E_2(q)^{m_1} E_4(q)^{m_2}\cdots E_{2n}(q)^{m_n}. $$ For functions $φ: \mathcal{P}\mapsto \mathbb{C}$ on partitions, the weight $2n$ partition Eisenstein trace is $$ \text{Tr}_n(φ;q):=\sum_{λ\vdash n} φ(λ)E_λ(q). $$ For all $t$, we prove that $U_{2t}(q)=\text{Tr}_t(φ_U;q)$ and $V_{2t}(q)=\text{Tr}_t(φ_V;q),$ where $φ_U$ and $φ_V$ are natural partition weights, giving the first explicit quasimodular formulas for these series.

Distribution of hooks in self-conjugate partitions
We confirm the speculation that the distribution of $t$-hooks among unrestricted integer partitions essentially descends to self-conjugate partitions. Namely, we prove that the number of hooks of length $t$ among the size $n$ self-conjugate partitions is asymptotically normally distributed with mean $μ_t(n) \sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π + \frac{3}{π^2} - \frac{t}{2}+\frac{δ_t}{4}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n) \sim \frac{(π^2 - 6) \sqrt{6n}}{π^3},$ where $δ_t:=1$ if $t$ is odd, and is 0 otherwise.

Integer partitions detect the primes
We show that integer partitions, the fundamental building blocks in additive number theory, detect prime numbers in an unexpected way. Answering a question of Schneider, we show that the primes are the solutions to special equations in partition functions. For example, an integer $n\geq 2$ is prime if and only if $$ (3n^3 - 13n^2 + 18n - 8)M_1(n) + (12n^2 - 120n + 212)M_2(n) -960M_3(n) = 0, $$ where the $M_a(n)$ are MacMahon's well-studied partition functions. More generally, for "MacMahonesque" partition functions $M_{\vec{a}}(n),$ we prove that there are infinitely many such prime detecting equations with constant coefficients, such as $$ 80M_{(1,1,1)}(n)-12M_{(2,0,1)}(n)+12M_{(2,1,0)}(n)+\dots-12M_{(1,3)}(n)-39M_{(3,1)}(n)=0. $$

Remarks on MacMahon's $q$-series
In his important 1920 paper on partitions, MacMahon defined the partition generating functions \begin{align*} A_k(q)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\mathfrak{m}(k;n)q^n&:=\sum_{0< s_1<s_2<\cdots<s_k} \frac{q^{s_1+s_2+\cdots+s_k}}{(1-q^{s_1})^2(1-q^{s_2})^2\cdots(1-q^{s_k})^2},\\ C_k(q)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \mathfrak{m}_{odd}(k;n)q^n&:=\sum_{0< s_1<s_2<\cdots<s_k} \frac{q^{2s_1+2s_2+\cdots+2s_k-k}}{(1-q^{2s_1-1})^2(1-q^{2s_2-1})^2\cdots(1-q^{2s_k-1})^2}. \end{align*} These series give infinitely many formulas for two prominent generating functions. For each non-negative $k$, we prove that $A_k(q), A_{k+1}(q), A_{k+2}(q),\dots$ (resp. $C_k(q), C_{k+1}(q), C_{k+2}(q),\dots$) give the generating function for the 3-colored partition function $p_3(n)$ (resp. the overpartition function $\overline{p}(n)$).
Hook lengths in self-conjugate partitions
In 2010, G.-N. Han obtained the generating function for the number of size $t$ hooks among integer partitions. Here we obtain these generating functions for self-conjugate partitions, which are particularly elegant for even $t$. If $n_t(λ)$ is the number of size $t$ hooks in a partition $λ,$ then for even $t$ we have $$\sum_{λ\in \mathcal{SC}} x^{n_t(λ)} q^{\vertλ\vert} = (-q;q^2)_{\infty} \cdot ((1-x^2)q^{2t};q^{2t})_{\infty}^{\frac{t}2}. $$ As a consequence, if $a_t^*(n)$ is the number of such hooks among the self-conjugate partitions of $n,$ then for even $t$ we obtain the simple formula $$ a_t^*(n)=t\sum_{j\geq 1} q^*(n-2tj), $$ where $q^*(m)$ is the number of partitions of $m$ into distinct odd parts. As a corollary, we find that $t\mid a_t^*(n),$ which confirms a conjecture of Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom, and Wen.

The partition function modulo 4

It is widely believed that the parity of the partition function $p(n)$ is ``random.'' Contrary to this expectation, in this note we prove the existence of infinitely many congruence relations modulo 4 among its values. For each square-free integer $1<D\equiv 23\pmod{24},$ we construct a weight 2 meromorphic modular form that is congruent modulo 4 to a certain twisted generating function for the numbers $p\big(\frac{Dm^2+1}{24}\big)\pmod 4$. We prove the existence of infinitely many linear dependence congruences modulo 4 among suitable sets of holomorphic normalizations of these series. These results rely on the theory of class numbers and Hilbert class polynomials, and {\it generalized twisted Borcherds products} developed by Bruinier and the author.

Zeros in the Character Tables of Symmetric Groups with an $\ell$-Core Index

Let $\mathcal{C}_n =\left [χ_λ(μ)\right]_{λ, μ}$ be the character table for $S_n,$ where the indices $λ$ and $μ$ run over the $p(n)$ many integer partitions of $n.$ In this note we study $Z_{\ell}(n),$ the number of zero entries $χ_λ(μ)$ in $\mathcal{C}_n,$ where $λ$ is an $\ell$-core partition of $n.$ For every prime $\ell\geq 5,$ we prove an asymptotic formula of the form $$ Z_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}\cdot σ_{\ell}(n+δ_{\ell})p(n)\gg_{\ell} n^{\frac{\ell-5}{2}}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}},$$ where $σ_{\ell}(n)$ is a twisted Legendre symbol divisor function, $δ_{\ell}:=(\ell^2-1)/24,$ and $1/α_{\ell}>0$ is a normalization of the Dirichlet $L$-value $L\left(\left(\frac{\cdot}{\ell}\right),\frac{\ell-1}{2}\right).$ For primes $\ell$ and $n>\ell^6/24,$ we show that $χ_λ(μ)=0$ whenever $λ$ and $μ$ are both $\ell$-cores. Furthermore, if $Z^*_{\ell}(n)$ is the number of zero entries indexed by two $\ell$-cores, then for $\ell\geq 5$ we obtain the asymptotic $$ Z^*_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}^2 \cdot σ_{\ell}( n+δ_{\ell})^2 \gg_{\ell} n^{\ell-3}. $$

Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields

The Euler-Mascheroni constant $γ=0.5772\dots\!$ is the $K=\mathbb{Q}$ example of an Euler-Kronecker constant $γ_K$ of a number field $K.$ In this note we consider the size of the $γ_q=γ_{K_q}$ for cyclotomic fields $K_q:=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q).$ Assuming the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture (EH), we prove uniformly in $Q$ that $$\frac{1}{Q}\sum_{Q<q\le 2Q} \left |γ_q - \log q\right |= o(\log Q).$$ In other words, under EH the $γ_q / \log q$ in these ranges converge to the one point distribution at $1$. This theorem refines and extends a previous result of Ford, Luca, and Moree for prime $q.$

Distributions of Hook lengths in integer partitions

Motivated by the many roles that hook lengths play in mathematics, we study the distribution of the number of $t$-hooks in the partitions of $n$. We prove that the limiting distribution is normal with mean $μ_t(n)\sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π-\frac{t}{2}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n)\sim \frac{(π^2-6)\sqrt{6n}}{2π^3}.$ Furthermore, we prove that the distribution of the number of hook lengths that are multiples of a fixed $t\geq 4$ in partitions of $n$ converge to a shifted Gamma distribution with parameter $k=(t-1)/2$ and scale $θ=\sqrt{2/(t-1)}.$

Turán inequalities for the plane partition function

Heim, Neuhauser, and Tröger recently established some inequalities for MacMahon's plane partition function $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ that generalize known results for Euler's partition function $p(n)$. They also conjectured that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ is log-concave for all $n\geq 12.$ We prove this conjecture. Moreover, for every $d\geq 1$, we prove their speculation that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ satisfies the degree $d$ Turán inequality for sufficiently large $n$. The case where $d=2$ is the case of log-concavity.

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points

Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths

Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Partition-theoretic formulas for arithmetic densities, II

In earlier work generalizing a 1977 theorem of Alladi, the authors proved a partition-theoretic formula to compute arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the positive integers $\mathbb N$ as limiting values of $q$-series as $q\to ζ$ a root of unity (instead of using the usual Dirichlet series to compute densities), replacing multiplicative structures of $\mathbb N$ by analogous structures in the integer partitions $\mathcal P$. In recent work, Wang obtains a wide generalization of Alladi's original theorem, in which arithmetic densities of subsets of prime numbers are computed as values of Dirichlet series arising from Dirichlet convolutions. Here the authors prove that Wang's extension has a partition-theoretic analogue as well, yielding new $q$-series density formulas for any subset of $\mathbb N$. To do so, we outline a theory of $q$-series density calculations from first principles, based on a statistic we call the "$q$-density" of a given subset. This theory in turn yields infinite families of further formulas for arithmetic densities.

Class Numbers and Self-Conjugate 7-Cores

We investigate $sc_7(n)$, the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions of size $n$. It turns out that $sc_7(n)=0$ for $n\equiv 7\pmod 8$. For $n\equiv 1, 3, 5\pmod 8$, with $n\not \equiv 5\pmod 7,$ we find that $sc_7(n)$ is essentially a Hurwitz class number. Using recent work of Gao and Qin, we show that $$ sc_7(n) = 2^{-\varepsilon(n)-1}\cdot H(-D_n), $$ where $-D_n:=-4^{\varepsilon(n)}(7n+14)$ and $\varepsilon(n):=\frac{1}{2}\cdot(1+(-1)^{\frac{n-1}{2}})$. This fact implies several corollaries which are of interest. For example, if $-D_n$ is a fundamental discriminant and $p\not \in \{2, 7\}$ is a prime with $ord_p(-D_n)\leq 1$, then for every positive integer $k$ we have $$ sc_7\left((n+2)p^{2k}-2\right)=sc_7(n)\cdot \left(1+\frac{p^{k+1}-p}{p-1}-\frac{p^k-1}{p-1}.\left(\frac{-D_n}{p}\right)\right), $$ where $\left(\frac{-D_n}{p}\right)$ is the Legendre symbol.

Partition-theoretic formulas for arithmetic densities

If $\gcd(r,t)=1$, then a theorem of Alladi offers the Möbius sum identity $$-\sum_{\substack{ n \geq 2 \\ p_{\rm{min}}(n) \equiv r \pmod{t}}} μ(n)n^{-1}= \frac{1}{\varphi(t)}. $$ Here $p_{\rm{min}}(n)$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$. The right-hand side represents the proportion of primes in a fixed arithmetic progression modulo $t$. Locus generalized this to Chebotarev densities for Galois extensions. Answering a question of Alladi, we obtain analogs of these results to arithmetic densities of subsets of positive integers using $q$-series and integer partitions. For suitable subsets $§$ of the positive integers with density $d_§$, we prove that \[- \lim_{q \to 1} \sum_{\substack{ λ\in \mathcal{P} \\ \rm{sm}(λ) \in §}} μ_{\mathcal{P}} (λ)q^{\vert λ\vert} = d_§,\] where the sum is taken over integer partitions $λ$, $μ_{\mathcal{P}}(λ)$ is a partition-theoretic Möbius function, $\vert λ\vert$ is the size of partition $λ$, and $\rm{sm}(λ)$ is the smallest part of $λ$. In particular, we obtain partition-theoretic formulas for even powers of $π$ when considering power-free integers.

Explorations in the theory of partition zeta functions

We introduce and survey results on two families of zeta functions connected to the multiplicative and additive theories of integer partitions. In the case of the multiplicative theory, we provide specialization formulas and results on the analytic continuations of these "partition zeta functions", find unusual formulas for the Riemann zeta function, prove identities for multiple zeta values, and see that some of the formulas allow for $p$-adic interpolation. The second family we study was anticipated by Manin and makes use of modular forms, functions which are intimately related to integer partitions by universal polynomial recurrence relations. We survey recent work on these zeta polynomials, including the proof of their Riemann Hypothesis.
