Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. III. Excluding a double star
Published • View PublicationBIB
A double star is a tree with two internal vertices. It is known that the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture holds for double stars, that is, for every double star $H$, there is a function $f$ such that if $G$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph then $χ(G)\le f(ω(G))$ (where $χ, ω$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$). Here we prove that $f$ can be chosen to be a polynomial.

Plethysms of Chromatic and Tutte Symmetric Functions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2022), P3.28 • View PublicationBIB
Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question. In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.
Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions II. Toward walls and their line graphs in graphs of bounded degree
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 164, January 2024, Pages 371-403 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is motivated by the following question: what are the unavoidable induced subgraphs of graphs with large treewidth? Aboulker et al. made a conjecture which answers this question in graphs of bounded maximum degree, asserting that for all $k$ and $Δ$, every graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and sufficiently large treewidth contains either a subdivision of the $(k\times k)$-wall or the line graph of a subdivision of the $(k\times k)$-wall as an induced subgraph. We prove two theorems supporting this conjecture, as follows. 1. For $t\geq 2$, a $t$-theta is a graph consisting of two nonadjacent vertices and three internally disjoint paths between them, each of length at least $t$. A $t$-pyramid is a graph consisting of a vertex $v$, a triangle $B$ disjoint from $v$ and three paths starting at $v$ and disjoint otherwise, each joining $v$ to a vertex of $B$, and each of length at least $t$. We prove that for all $k,t$ and $Δ$, every graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and sufficiently large treewidth contains either a $t$-theta, or a $t$-pyramid, or the line graph of a subdivision of the $(k\times k)$-wall as an induced subgraph. This affirmatively answers a question of Pilipczuk et al. asking whether every graph of bounded maximum degree and sufficiently large treewidth contains either a theta or a triangle as an induced subgraph (where a theta means a $t$-theta for some $t\geq 2$). 2. A subcubic subdivided caterpillar is a tree of maximum degree at most three whose all vertices of degree three lie on a path. We prove that for every $Δ$ and subcubic subdivided caterpillar $T$, every graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and sufficiently large treewidth contains either a subdivision of $T$ or the line graph of a subdivision of $T$ as an induced subgraph.

Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. II. Excluding a star-forest
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Gyarfas-Sumner conjecture says that for every forest $H$, there is a function $f$ such that if $G$ is $H$-free then $χ(G)\le f(ω(G))$ (where $χ, ω$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$). Louis Esperet conjectured that, whenever such a statement holds, $f$ can be chosen to be a polynomial. The Gyarfas-Sumner conjecture is only known to be true for a modest set of forests $H$, and Esperet's conjecture is known to be true for almost no forests. For instance, it is not known when $H$ is a five-vertex path. Here we prove Esperet's conjecture when each component of $H$ is a star.
Strengthening Rodl's theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
What can be said about the structure of graphs that do not contain an induced copy of some graph H? Rodl showed in the 1980s that every H-free graph has large parts that are very dense or very sparse. More precisely, let us say that a graph F on n vertices is c-restricted if either F or its complement has maximum degree at most cn. Rodl proved that for every graph H, and every c>0, every H-free graph G has a linear-sized set of vertices inducing a c-restricted graph. We strengthen Rodl's result as follows: for every graph H, and all c>0, every H-free graph can be partitioned into a bounded number of subsets inducing c-restricted graphs.

Pure pairs. V. Excluding some long subdivision
Published • View PublicationBIB
A pure pair in a graph $G$ is a pair $A,B$ of disjoint subsets of $V(G)$ such that $A$ is complete or anticomplete to $B$. Jacob Fox showed that for all $ε>0$, there is a comparability graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, where $n$ is large, in which there is no pure pair $A,B$ with $|A|,|B|\ge εn$. He also proved that for all $c>0$ there exists $ε>0$ such that for every comparability graph $G$ with $n>1$ vertices, there is a pure pair $A,B$ with $|A|,|B|\ge εn^{1-c}$; and conjectured that the same holds for every perfect graph $G$. We prove this conjecture and strengthen it in several ways. In particular, we show that for all $c>0$, and all $\ell_1, \ell_2\ge 4c^{-1}+9$, there exists $ε>0$ such that, if $G$ is a graph with $n>1$ vertices and no hole of length exactly $\ell_1$ and no antihole of length exactly $\ell_2$, then there is a pure pair $A,B$ in $G$ with $|A|\ge εn$ and $|B|\ge εn^{1-c}$. This is further strengthened, replacing excluding a hole by excluding some long subdivision of a general graph.

Further approximations for Aharoni's rainbow generalization of the Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 29 (1), (2022) #P1.55 • View PublicationBIB
For a digraph $G$ and $v \in V(G)$, let $δ^+(v)$ be the number of out-neighbors of $v$ in $G$. The Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture states that for all $k \ge 1$, if $G$ is a digraph with $n = |V(G)|$ such that $δ^+(v) \ge k$ for all $v \in V(G)$, then $G$ contains a directed cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. Aharoni proposed a generalization of this conjecture, that a simple edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with $n$ color classes, each of size $k$, has a rainbow cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. With Pelikánová and Pokorná, we showed that this conjecture is true if each color class has size $Ω(k\log k)$. In this paper, we present a proof of the conjecture if each color class has size $Ω(k)$, which improved the previous result and is only a constant factor away from Aharoni's conjecture. We also consider what happens when the condition on the number of colors is relaxed.

Complexity dichotomy for List-5-Coloring with a forbidden induced subgraph
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 36, Issue 3, 2022, 2004 -- 2027 • View PublicationBIB
For a positive integer $r$ and graphs $G$ and $H$, we denote by $G+H$ the disjoint union of $G$ and $H$, and by $rH$ the union of $r$ mutually disjoint copies of $H$. Also, we say $G$ is $H$-free if $H$ is not isomorphic to an induced subgraph of $G$. We use $P_t$ to denote the path on $t$ vertices. For a fixed positive integer $k$, the List-$k$-Coloring Problem is to decide, given a graph $G$ and a list $L(v)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ of colors assigned to each vertex $v$ of $G$, whether $G$ admits a proper coloring $φ$ with $φ(v)\in L(v)$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$, and the $k$-Coloring Problem is the List-$k$-Coloring Problem restricted to instances with $L(v)=\{1,\ldots, k\}$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$. We prove that for every positive integer $r$, the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $rP_3$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time. Together with known results, this gives a complete dichotomy for the complexity of the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs: For every graph $H$, assuming P$\neq$NP, the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time if and only if $H$ is an induced subgraph of either $rP_3$ or $P_5+rP_1$ for some positive integer $r$. As a hardness counterpart, we also show that the $k$-Coloring Problem restricted to $rP_4$-free graphs is NP-complete for all $k\geq 5$ and $r\geq 2$.

Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. I. Excluding a biclique and an induced tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let H be a tree. It was proved by Rodl that graphs that do not contain H as an induced subgraph, and do not contain the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph, have bounded chromatic number. Kierstead and Penrice strengthened this, showing that such graphs have bounded degeneracy. Here we give a further strengthening, proving that for every tree H, the degeneracy is at most polynomial in t. This answers a question of Bonamy, Pilipczuk, Rzazewski, Thomasse and Walczak.

Modular Relations of the Tutte Symmetric Function
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 187, April 2022, 105572 • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$, its Tutte symmetric function $XB_G$ generalizes both the Tutte polynomial $T_G$ and the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$. We may also consider $XB$ as a map from the $t$-extended Hopf algebra $\mathbb{G}[t]$ of labelled graphs to symmetric functions. We show that the kernel of $XB$ is generated by vertex-relabellings and a finite set of modular relations, in the same style as a recent analogous result by Penaguiao on the chromatic symmetric function $X$. In particular, we find one such relation that generalizes the well-known triangular modular relation of Orellana and Scott, and build upon this to give a modular relation of the Tutte symmetric function for any two-edge-connected graph that generalizes the $n$-cycle relation of Dahlberg and van Willigenburg. Additionally, we give a structural characterization of all local modular relations of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions, and prove that there is no single local modification that preserves either function on simple graphs. We also give an expansion relating $XB_G$ to $X_{G/S}$ as $S$ ranges over all subsets of $E(G)$, use this to extend results on the chromatic symmetric function to the Tutte symmetric function, and show that analogous formulas hold for a Tutte quasisymmetric function on digraphs.
Erdos-Hajnal for graphs with no 5-hole
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture says that for every graph H there exists c>0 such that every graph G not containing H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. We prove that this is true when H is a cycle of length five. We also prove several further results: for instance, that if C is a cycle and H is the complement of a forest, there exists c>0 such that every graph G containing neither of C,H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c.
On Aharoni's rainbow generalization of the Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 344, Issue 5, 2021, 112319 • View PublicationBIB
For a digraph $G$ and $v \in V(G)$, let $δ^+(v)$ be the number of out-neighbors of $v$ in $G$. The Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture states that for all $k \ge 1$, if $G$ is a digraph with $n = |V(G)|$ such that $δ^+(v) \ge k$ for all $v \in V(G)$, then G contains a directed cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. In [2], Aharoni proposes a generalization of this conjecture, that a simple edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with $n$ color classes, each of size $k$, has a rainbow cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture if each color class has size $Ω(k \log k)$.

Pure pairs. VII. Homogeneous submatrices in 0/1-matrices with a forbidden submatrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
For integer $n>0$, let $f(n)$ be the number of rows of the largest all-0 or all-1 square submatrix of $M$, minimized over all $n\times n$ $0/1$-matrices $M$. Thus $f(n)= O(\log n)$. But let us fix a matrix $H$, and define $f_H(n)$ to be the same, minimized over over all $n\times n$ $0/1$-matrices $M$ such that neither $M$ nor its complement (that is, change all $0$'s to $1$'s and vice versa) contains $H$ as a submatrix. It is known that $f_H(n)\ge εn^c$, where $c, ε>0$ are constants depending on $H$. When can we take $c=1$? If so, then one of $H$ and its complement must be an acyclic matrix (that is, the corresponding bipartite graph is a forest). Korandi, Pach, and Tomon conjectured the converse, that $f_H(n)$ is linear in $n$ for every acyclic matrix $H$; and they proved it for certain matrices $H$ with only two rows. Their conjecture remains open, but we show $f_H(n)=n^{1-o(1)}$ for every acyclic matrix $H$; and indeed there is a $0/1$-submatrix that is either $Ω(n)\times n^{1-o(1)}$ or $n^{1-o(1)}\times Ω(n)$.
A note on simplicial cliques

Motivated by an application in condensed matter physics and quantum information theory, we prove that every non-null even-hole-free claw-free graph has a simplicial clique, that is, a clique $K$ such that for every vertex $v \in K$, the set of neighbours of $v$ outside of $K$ is a clique. In fact, we prove the existence of a simplicial clique in a more general class of graphs defined by forbidden induced subgraphs.

A complete multipartite basis for the chromatic symmetric function
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 35, Issue 4, November 2021, 2647-2661 • View PublicationBIB
In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions of a graph $G$ when expanded in the $r$-basis enumerate certain intersections of partitions of $V(G)$ into stable sets.

Pure pairs. VI. Excluding an ordered tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A pure pair in a graph $G$ is a pair $(Z_1,Z_2)$ of disjoint sets of vertices such that either every vertex in $Z_1$ is adjacent to every vertex in $Z_2$, or there are no edges between $Z_1$ and $Z_2$. With Maria Chudnovsky, we recently proved that, for every forest $F$, every graph $G$ with at least two vertices that does not contain $F$ or its complement as an induced subgraph has a pure pair $(Z_1,Z_2)$ with $|Z_1|,|Z_2|$ linear in $|G|$. Here we investigate what we can say about pure pairs in an {\em ordered} graph $G$, when we exclude an ordered forest $F$ and its complement as induced subgraphs. Fox showed that there need not be a linear pure pair; but Pach and Tomon showed that if $F$ is a monotone path then there is a pure pair of size $c|G|/\log |G|$. We generalise this to all ordered forests, at the cost of a slightly worse bound: we prove that, for every ordered forest $F$, every ordered graph $G$ with at least two vertices that does not contain $F$ or its complement as an induced subgraph has a pure pair of size $|G|^{1-o(1)}$.

Pure pairs. IV. Trees in bipartite graphs

In this paper we investigate the bipartite analogue of the strong Erdos-Hajnal property. We prove that for every forest $H$ and every $τ>0$ there exists $ε>0$, such that if $G$ has a bipartition $(A,B)$ and does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph, and has at most $(1-τ)|A|\cdot|B|$ edges, then there is a stable set in $G$ that contains at least $ε|V_i|$ vertices of $V_i$, for $i=1,2$. No graphs $H$ except forests have this property.
A Vertex-Weighted Tutte Symmetric Function, and Constructing Graphs with Equal Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2021): P2-1 • View PublicationBIB
This paper has two main parts. First, we consider the Tutte symmetric function $XB$, a generalization of the chromatic symmetric function. We introduce a vertex-weighted version of $XB$ and show that this function admits a deletion-contraction relation. We also demonstrate that the vertex-weighted $XB$ admits spanning-tree and spanning-forest expansions generalizing those of the Tutte polynomial by connecting $XB$ to other graph functions. Second, we give several methods for constructing nonisomorphic graphs with equal chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions, and use them to provide specific examples.
List-three-coloring $ P_t $-free graphs with no induced 1-subdivision of $ K_{1,s} $
Let $s$ and $t$ be positive integers. We use $P_t$ to denote the path with $t$ vertices and $K_{1,s}$ to denote the complete bipartite graph with parts of size $1$ and $s$ respectively. The one-subdivision of $K_{1,s}$ is obtained by replacing every edge $\{u,v\}$ of $K_{1,s}$ by two edges $\{u,w\}$ and $\{v,w\}$ with a new vertex $w$. In this paper, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for the list-three-coloring problem restricted to the class of $P_t$-free graph with no induced 1-subdivision of $K_{1,s}$.
