New type series for powers of $π$
Motivated by Ramanujan-type series and Zeilberger-type series, in this paper we investigate two new types of series for powers of $π$. For example, we prove that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty(198k^2-425k+210)\frac{k^3\binom{2k}k^3}{4096^k}=-\frac1{21π}$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{198k^2-227k+47}{\binom{2k}k^3}=\frac{3264-4π^2}{63}.$$ We also pose many conjectures in this new direction.

In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that $$\mathrm{per}\left[\left\lfloor\frac{2j-k}{n}\right\rfloor\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=2(2^{n+1}-1)B_{n+1},$$ where $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that $$ \mathrm{per}\left[\mathrm{sgn}\left(\cosπ\frac{i+j}{n+1}\right)\right]_{1\le i,j\le n}=\begin{cases} -\sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k+1}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m+1,\\ \sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m, \end{cases} $$ where $\mathrm{sgn}(x)$ is the sign function, and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are the Euler (zigzag) numbers.
In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic -- the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the $2$-Eulerian polynomials.

For any $m,n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2\ldots\}$, the truncated hypergeometric series ${}_{m+1}F_m$ is defined by $$ {}_{m+1}F_m\bigg[\begin{matrix}x_0&x_1&\ldots&x_m\\ &y_1&\ldots&y_m\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\frac{(x_0)_k(x_1)_k\cdots(x_m)_k}{(y_1)_k\cdots(y_m)_k}\cdot\frac{z^k}{k!}, $$ where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol. Let $p$ be an odd prime. For $α,z\in\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $\langle -α\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative residue of $x$ modulo $p$ for any $x\in\mathbb{Z}_p$, we mainly prove the following congruence motivated by Orr's identity: $$ {}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac32-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}{}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac12-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv{}_3F_2\bigg[\begin{matrix}α&2-α&\frac12\\ &1&1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\pmod{p^2}. $$ As a corollary, for any positive integer $b$ with $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{b}$ and $\langle -1/b\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, we deduce that $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(b^2k+b-1)\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{4^k}\binom{-1/b}{k}\binom{1/b-1}{k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2}. $$ This confirms a conjectural congruence of the second author.

For each $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ the central trinomial coefficient $T_n$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+x+1)^n$. In 2016 the second author conjectured that for any prime $p>3$ and positive integer $n$ the quotient $(T_{pn}-T_n)/(pn)^2$ is a $p$-adic integer. In this paper we confirm this conjecture and prove further that $$\frac{T_{pn}-T_n}{(pn)^2}\equiv\frac{T_{n-1}}6\left(\frac p3\right)B_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod p,$$ where $(\frac p3)$ is the Legendre symbol and $B_{p-2}(x)$ is the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $p-2$.

In this paper, we deduce a family of six new series for $1/π$; for example, $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{41673840n+4777111}{5780^n}W_n\left(\frac{1444}{1445}\right) =\frac{147758475}{\sqrt{95}\,π}$$ where $W_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom{n+k}k\binom{2k}k\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k}x^k$. To do so, we transform our series to series of the type $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{an+b}{m^n}\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^4$$ studied by Cooper in 2012. In addition, we pose $17$ new series for $1/π$ motivated by congruences; for example, we conjecture that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{4290k+367}{3136^k}\binom{2k}kT_k(14,1)T_k(17,16)=\frac{5390}π,$$ where $T_k(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^k$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^k$.
Connections between covers of $\mathbb Z$ and subset sums
In this paper we establish connections between covers of $\mathbb Z$ by residue classes and subset sums in a field. Suppose that $A_0=\{a_s(n_s)\}_{s=0}^k$ covers each integer at least $p$ times with the residue class $a_0(n_0)=a_0+n_0\mathbb Z$ irredundant, where $p$ is a prime not dividing any of $n_1,\ldots,n_k$. Let $m_1,\ldots,m_k\in\mathbb Z$ be relatively prime to $n_1,\ldots,n_k$ respectively. For any $c,c_1,\ldots,c_k\in\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ with $c_1\cdots c_k\not=0$, we show that the set $$\bigg\{\bigg\{\sum_{s\in I}\frac{m_s}{n_s}\bigg\}:\, I\subseteq\{1,\ldots,k\} \ \mbox{and}\ \sum_{s\in I}c_s=c\bigg\}$$ contains an arithmetic progression of length $n_0$ with common difference $1/n_0$, where $\{x\}$ denotes the fractional part of a real number $x$.
A new extension of the Sun-Zagier result involving Bell numbers and derangement numbers
Let $p$ be any prime and let $a$ and $n$ be positive integers with $p\nmid n$. We show that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\frac{B_k}{(-n)^k}\equiv a(-1)^{n-1}D_{n-1}\pmod {p},$$ where $B_0,B_1,\ldots$ are the Bell numbers and $D_0,D_1,\ldots$ are the derangement numbers. This extends a result of Sun and Zagier published in 2011. Furthermore, we prove that $$(-x)^n\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\frac{B_k(x)}{(-n)^k}\equiv -\sum_{r=1}^ax^{p^r}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{(n-1)!}{k!}(-x)^k\pmod{p\mathbb Z_p[x]},$$ where $B_k(x)=\sum_{l=0}^kS(k,l)x^l$ is the Bell polynomial of degree $k$ with $S(k,l)\ (0\le l\le k)$ the Stirling numbers of the second kind, and $\mathbb Z_p$ is the ring of all $p$-adic integers.

In this paper, we prove several supercongruences conjectured by Z.-W. Sun ten years ago via certain strange hypergeometric identities. For example, for any prime $p>3$, we show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{4k}{2k+1}\binom{2k}k}{48^k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2},$$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}\binom{3k}{k}}{24^k}\equiv\begin{cases}\binom{(2p-2)/3}{(p-1)/3}\pmod{p^2}\ &\mbox{if}\ p\equiv1\pmod{3},\\ p/\binom{(2p+2)/3}{(p+1)/3}\pmod{p^2}\ &\mbox{if}\ p\equiv2\pmod{3}.\end{cases} $$ We also obtain some other results of such types.
On the set $\{π(kn):\ k=1,2,3,\ldots\}$
An open conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that for any integer $n>1$ there is a positive integer $k\le n$ such that $π(kn)$ is prime, where $π(x)$ denotes the number of primes not exceeding $x$. In this paper, we show that for any positive integer $n$ the set $\{π(kn):\ k=1,2,3,\ldots\}$ contains infinitely many $P_2$-numbers which are products of at most two primes. We also prove that under the Bateman--Horn conjecture the set $\{π(4k):\ k=1,2,3,\ldots\}$ contains infinitely many primes.

Via symbolic computation we deduce 97 new type series for powers of $π$ related to Ramanujan-type series. Here are three typical examples: $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{P(k) \binom{2k}k\binom{3k}k \binom{6k}{3k}}{(k+1)(2k-1)(6k-1)(-640320)^{3k}}
=\frac{18\times557403^3\sqrt{10005}}{5π}$$ with \begin{align*}P(k) = &637379600041024803108 k^2 + 657229991696087780968 k \\&+ 19850391655004126179, \end{align*} $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{(3k+1)16^k}{(2k+1)^2k^3\binom{2k}k^3} = \frac{π^2-8}2,$$ and $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{3n+1}{(-100)^n} \sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}^2T_k(1,25)T_{n-k}(1,25) = \frac{25}{8π},$$ where the generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_k(b,c)$ denotes the coefficient of $x^k$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^k$. We also formulate a general characterization of rational Ramanujan-type series for $1/π$ via congruences, and pose 117 new conjectural series for powers of $π$ via looking for corresponding congruences. For example, we conjecture that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{39480k+7321}{(-29700)^k}T_k(14,1)T_k(11,-11)^2=\frac{6795\sqrt5}π.$$ Eighteen of the new series in this paper involve some imaginary quadratic fields with class number $8$.

For $n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $b,c\in\mathbb{Z}$, the $n$th generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$. In particular, $T_n=T_n(1,1)$ is the central trinomial coefficient. In this paper, we mainly establish some parametric congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients. As consequences, we prove that for any prime $p>3$ $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{12^k}T_k\equiv\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\frac{3^{p-1}+3}{4}\pmod{p^2} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{T_kH_k}{3^k}\equiv\frac{3+\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)}{2}-p\left(1+\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol and $H_k:=\sum_{j=1}^k1/j$ denotes the $k$th harmonic number. These confirm two conjectural congruences of the second author.
$p$-adic analogues of hypergeometric identities and their applications
In this paper, we confirm several conjectures posed by Sun recently; for example, we prove that for any odd prime $p$ we have $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}A_k\equiv\begin{cases}4x^2-2p\pmod{p^2}\quad&\text{if $p=x^2+2y^2\ (x,y\in\mathbb{Z})$},\\ 0\pmod{p^2}\quad&\text{if $p\equiv5,7\pmod{8}$},\end{cases} $$ where $A_n:=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n+k}{k}^2\binom{n}{k}^2$ are the Apéry numbers.

In this paper we obtain some novel identities involving trigonometric functions. Let $n$ be any positive odd integer. We show that $$\sum_{r=0}^{n-1}\frac1{1+\sin2π\frac{x+r}n+\cos2π\frac{x+r}n} =\frac{(-1)^{(n-1)/2}n}{1+(-1)^{(n-1)/2}\sin 2πx+\cos 2πx}$$ for any complex number with $x+1/2,x+(-1)^{(n-1)/2}/4\not\in\mathbb Z$, and $$\sum_{j,k=0}^{n-1}\frac1{\sin 2π\frac{x+j}n+\sin2π\frac{y+k}n}=\frac{(-1)^{(n-1)/2}n^2}{\sin 2πx+\sin2πy}$$ for all complex numbers $x$ and $y$ with $x+y,x-y-1/2\not\in\mathbb Z$. We also determine the values of $\prod_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}(1+\tanπ\frac{k^2}p)$ and $\prod_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}(1+\cotπ\frac{k^2}p)$ for any odd prime $p$. In addition, we pose several conjectures on the values of $G_p(x)=\prod_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}(x-e^{2πik^2/p})$ with $p$ an odd prime and $x$ a root of unity.

In this paper we obtain a new curious identity involving trigonometric functions. Namely, for any positive odd integer $n$ we prove that $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^k(\cot kx)\sin k(n-k)x=\frac{1-n}2,$$ which is equivalent to the identity $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kU_{n-k}(\cos kx)=-\frac{n+1}2,$$ where $U_m(z)$ stands for the $m$th Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind. As a consequence, for any positive odd integer $n$ and positive integer $m$ we obtain $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^kk^{2m}B_{2m+1}\left(\frac{n-k}2\right)=0,$$ where $B_j(x)$ denotes the Bernoulli polynomial of degree $j$.
On permutations of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and related topics
In this paper we study combinatorial aspects of permutations of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and related topics. In particular, we prove that there is a unique permutation $π$ of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ such that all the numbers $k+π(k)$ ($k=1,\ldots,n$) are powers of two. We also show that $n\mid\text{per}[i^{j-1}]_{1\le i,j\le n}$ for any integer $n>2$. We conjecture that if a group $G$ contains no element of order among $2,\ldots,n+1$ then any $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|=n$ can be written as $\{a_1,\ldots,a_n\}$ with $a_1,a_2^2,\ldots,a_n^n$ pairwise distinct. This conjecture is confirmed when $G$ is a torsion-free abelian group. We also prove that for any finite subset $A$ of a torsion-free abelian group $G$ with $|A|=n>3$, there is a numbering $a_1,\ldots,a_n$ of all the elements of $A$ such that all the $n$ sums $$a_1+a_2+a_3,\ a_2+a_3+a_4,\ \ldots,\ a_{n-2}+a_{n-1}+a_n,\ a_{n-1}+a_n+a_1,\ a_n+a_1+a_2$$ are pairwise distinct.

Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper we investigate quadratic residues modulo $p$ and related permutations, congruences and identities. If $a_1<\ldots<a_{(p-1)/2}$ are all the quadratic residues modulo $p$ among $1,\ldots,p-1$, then the list $\{1^2\}_p,\ldots,\{((p-1)/2)^2\}_p$ (with $\{k\}_p$ the least nonnegative residue of $k$ modulo $p$) is a permutation of $a_1,\ldots,a_{(p-1)/2}$, and we show that the sign of this permutation is $1$ or $(-1)^{(h(-p)+1)/2}$ according as $p\equiv3\pmod 8$ or $p\equiv7\pmod 8$, where $h(-p)$ is the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-p})$. To achieve this, we evaluate the product $\prod_{1\le j<k\le(p-1)/2}(\cotπj^2/p-\cotπk^2/p)$ via Dirichlet's class number formula and Galois theory. We also obtain some new identities for the sine and cosine functions; for example, we determine the exact value of $$\prod_{1\le j<k\le p-1}\cosπ\frac{aj^2+bjk+ck^2}p$$ for any $a,b,c\in\mathbb Z$ with $ac(a+b+c)\not\equiv0\pmod p$.

We obtain $q$-analogues of several series for powers of $π$. For example, the identity $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^k}{(2k+1)^3}=\frac{π^3}{32}$$ has the following $q$-analogue: \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty(-1)^k\frac{q^{2k}(1+q^{2k+1})}{(1-q^{2k+1})^3}=\frac{(q^2;q^4)_{\infty}^2(q^4;q^4)_{\infty}^6} {(q;q^2)_{\infty}^4}, \end{equation*} where $q$ is any complex number with $|q|<1$. It is well known that $ζ(2)=π^2/6$ as discovered by Euler. In this paper we present the following two $q$-analogues of this celebrated formula: $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{q^k(1+q^{2k+1})}{(1-q^{2k+1})^2}=\prod_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(1-q^{2n})^4}{(1-q^{2n-1})^4}$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{q^{2k-\lfloor(-1)^kk/2\rfloor}}{(1-q^{2k+1})^2} =\prod_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(1-q^{2n})^2(1-q^{4n})^2}{(1-q^{2n-1})^2(1-q^{4n-2})^2},$$ where $q$ is any complex number with $|q|<1$. We also give a $q$-analogue of the identity $ζ(4)=π^4/90$, and pose a problem on $q$-analogues of Euler's formula for $ζ(2m)\ (m=3,4,\ldots)$.

We obtain a new $q$-analogue of the classical Leibniz series $\sum_{k=0}^\infty(-1)^k/(2k+1)=π/4$, namely \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^kq^{k(k+3)/2}}{1-q^{2k+1}}=\frac{(q^2;q^2)_{\infty}(q^8;q^8)_{\infty}}{(q;q^2)_{\infty}(q^4;q^8)_{\infty}}, \end{equation*} where $q$ is a complex number with $|q|<1$. We also show that the Zeilberger-type series $\sum_{k=1}^\infty(3k-1)16^k/(k\binom{2k}k)^3=π^2/2$ has two $q$-analogues with $|q|<1$, one of which is $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty q^{n(n+1)/2} \frac {1-q^{3n+2}} {1-q} \cdot\frac{(q;q)_n^3 (-q;q)_n}{(q^3;q^2)_{n}^3} = (1-q)^2 \frac{(q^2;q^2)^4_\infty}{(q;q^2)^4_\infty}.$$

The Motzkin numbers $M_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom n{2k}\binom{2k}k/(k+1)$ $(n=0,1,2,\ldots)$ and the central trinomial coefficients $T_n$ ($n=0,1,2,\ldots)$ given by the constant term of $(1+x+x^{-1})^n$, have many combinatorial interpretations. In this paper we establish the following surprising arithmetic properties of them with $n$ any positive integer: $$\frac2n\sum_{k=1}^n(2k+1)M_k^2\in\mathbb Z,$$ $$\frac{n^2(n^2-1)}6\,\bigg|\,\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}k(k+1)(8k+9)T_kT_{k+1},$$ and also $$\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(k+1)(k+2)(2k+3)M_k^23^{n-1-k}=n(n+1)(n+2)M_nM_{n-1}.$$
