A Grammar of Dumont and a Theorem of Diaconis-Evans-Graham
We came across an unexpected connection between a remarkable grammar of Dumont for the joint distribution of $(\exc, \fix)$ over $S_n$ and a beautiful theorem of Diaconis-Evans-Graham on successions and fixed points of permutations. With the grammar in hand, we demonstrate the advantage of the grammatical calculus in deriving the generating functions, where the constant property plays a substantial role. On the grounds of left successions of a permutation, we present a grammatical treatment of the joint distribution investigated by Roselle. Moreover, we obtain a left succession analogue of the Diaconis-Evans-Graham theorem, exemplifying the idea of a grammar assisted bijection. The grammatical labelings give rise to an equidistribution of $(\jump, \des)$ and $(\exc, \drop)$ restricted to the set of left successions and the set of fixed points, {where $\jump$ is defined to be the number of ascents minus the number of left successions.}

Pattern-avoiding modified ascent sequences
We initiate an in-depth study of pattern avoidance on modified ascent sequences. Our main technique consists in using Stanley's standardization to obtain a transport theorem between primitive modified ascent sequences and permutations avoiding a bivincular pattern of length three. We enumerate some patterns via bijections with other combinatorial structures such as Fishburn permutations, lattice paths and set partitions. We settle the last remaining case of a conjecture by Duncan and Steingrímsson by proving that modified ascent sequences avoiding 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers.

On the joint distributions of succession and Eulerian statistics
The motivation of this paper is to investigate the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian statistics. We first investigate the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions over all permutations in the symmetric group. As an generalization a result of Diaconis-Evans-Graham (Adv. in Appl. Math., 61 (2014), 102-124), we show that two triple set-valued statistics of permutations are equidistributed on symmetric groups. We then introduce the definition of proper left-to-right minimum, and discover that the joint distribution of the succession and proper left-to-right minimum statistics over permutations is a symmetric distribution. In the final part, we discuss the relationship between the fix and cyc (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials and the joint distribution of succession and Eulerian-type statistics. In particular, we give a concise derivation of the generating function for a six-variable Eulerian polynomials.
On some discrete statistics of parking functions
Recall that $α=(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n)\in[n]^n$ is a parking function if its nondecreasing rearrangement $β=(b_1,b_2,\ldots,b_n)$ satisfies $b_i\leq i$ for all $1\leq i\leq n$. In this article, we study parking functions based on their ascents (indices at which $a_i<a_{i+1}$), descents (indices at which $a_i>a_{i+1}$), and ties (indices at which $a_i=a_{i+1}$). By utilizing multiset Eulerian polynomials, we give a generating function for the number of parking functions of length $n$ with $i$ descents. We present a recursive formula for the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at a specified subset of $[n-1]$. We establish that the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at $I\subset[n-1]$ and descents at $J=\{n-i:i\in I\}$ are equinumerous. As a special case, we show that the number of parking functions of length $n$ with descents at the first $k$ indices is given by $f(n, n-k-1)=\frac{1}{n}\binom{n}{k}\binom{2n-k}{n-k-1}$. We prove this by bijecting to the set of standard Young tableaux of shape $((n-k)^2,1^k)$, which are enumerated by $f(n,n-k-1)$. We also study peaks of parking functions, which are indices at which $a_{i-1}<a_i>a_{i+1}$. We show that the set of parking functions with no peaks and no ties is enumerated by the Catalan numbers. We conclude our study by characterizing when a parking function is uniquely determined by their statistic encoding; a word indicating what indices in the parking function are ascents, descents, and ties. We provide open problems throughout.
Lattice paths and branched continued fractions. III. Generalizations of the Laguerre, rook and Lah polynomials
We introduce a triangular array $\widehat{\sf L}^{(α)}$ of 5-variable homogeneous polynomials that enumerate Laguerre digraphs (digraphs in which each vertex has out-degree 0 or 1 and in-degree 0 or 1) with separate weights for peaks, valleys, double ascents, double descents, and loops. These polynomials generalize the classical Laguerre polynomials as well as the rook and Lah polynomials. We show that this triangular array is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is Hankel-totally positive, under suitable restrictions on the values given to the indeterminates. This implies, in particular, the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the monic unsigned univariate Laguerre polyomials. Our proof uses the method of production matrices as applied to exponential Riordan arrays. Our main technical lemma concerns the total positivity of a large class of quadridiagonal production matrices; it generalizes the tridiagonal comparison theorem. In some cases these polynomials are given by a branched continued fraction. Our constructions are motivated in part by recurrences for the multiple orthogonal polynomials associated to weights based on modified Bessel functions of the first kind $I_α$.

Difference ascent sequences
Let alpha = a_1 a_2 ... a_n be a sequence of nonnegative integers. The ascent set of alpha, Asc(alpha), consists of all indices k where a_{k+1} > a_k. An ascent sequence is alpha where the growth of the a_k is bounded by the elements of Asc(alpha). These sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev and have many wonderful properties. In particular, they are in bijection with unlabeled (2+2)-free posets, permutations avoiding a particular bivincular pattern, certain upper-triangular nonnegative integer matrices, and a class of matchings. A weak ascent of alpha is an index k with a_{k+1} >= a_k and weak ascent sequences are defined analogously to ascent sequences. These were studied by Bényi, Claesson and Dukes and shown to have analogous equinumerous sets. Given a nonnegative integer d, we define a difference d ascent to be an index k such that a_{k+1} > a_k - d. We study the properties of the corresponding d-ascent sequences, showing that some of the maps from the weak case can be extended to bijections for general d while the extensions of others continue to be injective (but not surjective). We also make connections with other combinatorial objects such as rooted duplication trees and restricted growth functions.
Lattice Path Delta Matroids
We initiate the study of a type $C_n$ generalization of the lattice path matroids defined by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy. These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, enveloping matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths. In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.

Joint distributions of statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:1, Permutation Patterns 2023, Special issues (November 4, 2024) dmtcs:12517 • View PublicationBIB
Finding distributions of permutation statistics over pattern-avoiding classes of permutations attracted much attention in the literature. In particular, Bukata et al. found distributions of ascents and descents on permutations avoiding any two patterns of length 3. In this paper, we generalize these results in two different ways: we find explicit formulas for the joint distribution of six statistics (asc, des, lrmax, lrmin, rlmax, rlmin), and also explicit formulas for the joint distribution of four statistics (asc, des, MNA, MND) on these permutations in all cases. The latter result also extends the recent studies by Kitaev and Zhang of the statistics MNA and MND (related to non-overlapping occurrences of ascents and descents) on stack-sortable permutations. All multivariate generating functions in our paper are rational, and we provide combinatorial proofs of five equidistribution results that can be derived from the generating functions.

Non-overlapping descents and ascents in stack-sortable permutations
The Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$ give the distribution of descents over permutations. It is also known that the distribution of descents over stack-sortable permutations (i.e. permutations sortable by a certain algorithm whose internal storage is limited to a single stack data structure) is given by the Narayana numbers $\frac{1}{n}{n \choose k}{n \choose k+1}$. On the other hand, as a corollary of a much more general result, the distribution of the statistic ``maximum number of non-overlapping descents'', MND, over all permutations is given by $\sum_{n,k \geq 0}D_{n,k}x^k\ frac{t^n}{n!}=\frac{e^t}{1-x(1+(t-1)e^t)}$. In this paper, we show that the distribution of MND over stack-sortable permutations is given by $\frac{1}{n+1}{n+1\choose 2k+1}{n+k \choose k}$. We give two proofs of the result via bijections with rooted plane (binary) trees allowing us to control MND. Moreover, we show combinatorially that MND is equidistributed with the statistic MNA, the maximum number of non-overlapping ascents, over stack-sortable permutations. The last fact is obtained by establishing an involution on stack-sortable permutations that gives equidistribution of 8 statistics.

Mean and variance of the longest alternating subsequence in a random separable permutation
A permutation is \it separable \rm if it can be obtained from the singleton permutation by iterating direct sums and skew sums. Equivalently, it is separable if and only it avoids the patterns 2413 and 3142. Under the uniform probability on separable permutations of $[n]$, let the random variable $A_n$ denote the length of the longest alternating subsequence. Also, let $A_n^{+,-}$ denote the length of the longest alternating subsequence that begins with an ascent and ends with a descent, and define $A_n^{-,+}, A_n^{+,+}, A_n^{-,-}$ similarly. By symmetry, the first two and the last two of these latter four random variables are equi-distributed. We prove that the expected value of any of these five random variables behaves asymptotically as $(2-\sqrt2)n\approx0.5858\thinspace n$. We also prove that the variance of any of the four random variables $A_n^{\pm,\pm}$ behaves asymptotically as $\frac{16-11\sqrt2}2n\approx0.2218\thinspace n$.

The $(α,β)$-Eulerian Polynomials and Descent-Stirling Statistics on Permutations
Carlitz and Scoville introduced the polynomials $A_n(x,y|α,β)$, which we refer to as the $(α, β)$-Eulerian polynomials. These polynomials count permutations based on Eulerian-Stirling statistics, including descents, ascents, left-to-right maxima, and right-to-left maxima. Carlitz and Scoville obtained the generating function of $A_n(x,y|α,β)$. In this paper, we introduce a new family of polynomials, $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$, defined on permutations, incorporating descent-Stirling statistics including valleys, exterior peaks, right double descents, left double ascents, left-to-right maxima, and right-to-left maxima. By employing the grammatical calculus introduced by Chen, we establish the connection between the generating function of $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$ and the generating function of the $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x,y|α,β)$ introduced by Carlitz and Scoville. Using this connection, we derive the generating function of $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$, which can be specialized to obtain the $(α,β)$-extensions of generating functions for peaks, left peaks, double ascents, right double ascents and left-right double ascents given by David-Barton, Elizalde and Noy, Entringer, Gessel, Kitaev and Zhuang. Moreover, we establish two relations between $P_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4|α,β)$ and $A_n(x,y|α,β)$, which enable us to derive $(α,β)$-extensions of results of Stembridge, Petersen, Brändén, and Zhuang. Specializing $(α,β)$-extensions of Stembridge's formula and the left peak version of Stembridge's formula allows us to derive the $(α,β)$-extensions of the tangent and secant numbers.

Caylerian polynomials
The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents. We initiate the study of descent polynomials over Cayley permutations, which we call Caylerian polynomials. Some classical results are generalized by linking Caylerian polynomials to Burge words and Burge matrices. The $γ$-nonegativity of the two-sided Eulerian polynomials is reformulated in terms of Burge structures. Finally, Cayley permutations with a prescribed ascent set are shown to be counted by Burge matrices with fixed row sums.

On Unique Factorization of Non-periodic Words
Given a bi-order $\succ$ on the free group $\mathcal{F}$, we show that every non-periodic cyclically reduced word $W\in \mathcal{F}$ admits a maximal ascent that is uniquely positioned. This provides a cyclic permutation of $W'$ that decomposes as $W'=AD$ where $A$ is the maximal ascent and $D$ is either trivial or a descent. We show that if $D$ is not uniquely positioned in $W$, then it must be an internal subword in $A$. Moreover, we show that when $\succ$ is the Magnus ordering, $D=1_\mathcal{F}$ if and only if $W$ is monotonic.

Pattern Avoidance in Weak Ascent Sequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:1, Permutation Patterns 2023, Special issues (August 21, 2024) dmtcs:12273 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study pattern avoidance in weak ascent sequences, giving some results for patterns of length 3. This is an analogous study to one given by Duncan and Steingrímsson (2011) for ascent sequences. More precisely, we provide systematically the generating functions for the number of weak ascent sequences avoiding the patterns $001, 011, 012, 021$, and $102$. Additionally, we establish bijective connections between pattern-avoiding weak ascent sequences and other combinatorial objects, such as compositions, upper triangular 01-matrices, and plane trees.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

A subfamily of skew Dyck paths related to $k$-ary trees
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 27: Article 24.2.4, 22 pp., 2024 • Search Publication
We introduce a subfamily of skew Dyck paths called box paths and show that they are in bijection with pairs of ternary trees, confirming an observation stated previously on the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. More generally, we define $k$-box paths, which are in bijection with $(k+1)$-tuples of $(k+2)$-ary trees. A bijection is given between $k$-box paths and a subfamily of $k_{t}$-Dyck paths, as well as a bijection with a subfamily of $(k,\ell)$-threshold sequences. We also study the refined enumeration of $k$-box paths by the number of returns and the number of long ascents. Notably, the distribution of long ascents over $k$-box paths generalizes the Narayana distribution on Dyck paths, and we find that $(k-3)$-box paths with exactly two long ascents provide a combinatorial model for the second $k$-gonal numbers.
Flattened Stirling Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recall that a Stirling permutation is a permutation on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$ such that any numbers appearing between repeated values of $i$ must be greater than $i$. We call a Stirling permutation ``flattened'' if the leading terms of maximal chains of ascents (called runs) are in weakly increasing order. Our main result establishes a bijection between flattened Stirling permutations and type $B$ set partitions of $\{0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots,\pm (n-1)\}$, which are known to be enumerated by the Dowling numbers, and we give an independent proof of this fact. We also determine the maximal number of runs for any flattened Stirling permutation, and we enumerate flattened Stirling permutations with a small number of runs or with two runs of equal length. We conclude with some conjectures and generalizations worthy of future investigation.

Modified ascent sequences and Bell numbers
In 2011, Duncan and Steingrímsson conjectured that modified ascent sequences avoiding any of the patterns 212, 1212, 2132, 2213, 2231 and 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers. Furthermore, the distribution of the number of ascents is the reverse of the distribution of blocks on set partitions. We solve the conjecture for all the patterns except 2321. We describe the corresponding sets of Fishburn permutations by pattern avoidance, and leave some open questions for future work.

Chain algebras of finite distributive lattices
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 59, pages 473-494, (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of toric algebras defined by maximal chains of a finite distributive lattice. Applying results on stable set polytopes we conclude that every such algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and give an interpretation of its Krull dimension in terms of the combinatorics of the underlying lattice. When the lattice is planar, we show that the corresponding chain algebra is generated by a sortable set of monomials and is isomorphic to a Hibi ring of another finite distributive lattice. As a consequence it has a defining toric ideal with a quadratic Gröbner basis, and its $h$-vector counts ascents in certain standard Young tableaux. If instead the lattice has dimension $n>2$, we show that the defining ideal has minimal generators of degree at least $n$.
$q$-enumeration of type B and D Eulerian polynomials based on parity of descents
Published • View PublicationBIB
Carlitz and Scoville in 1973 considered a four variable polynomial that enumerates permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with respect to the parity of its descents and ascents. In recent work, Pan and Zeng proved a $q$-analogue of Carlitz-Scoville's generating function by enumerating permutations with the above four statistice along with the inversion number. Further, they also proved a type B analogue by enumerating signed permutations with respect to the parity of descents and ascents. In this work we prove a $q$-analogue of the type B result of Pan and Zeng by enumerating permutations in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ with the above four statistics and the type B inversion number. We also obtain a $q$-analogue of the generating function for the type B bivariate alternating descent polynomials. We consider a similar five-variable polynomial in the type D Coxeter groups as well and give their egf. Alternating descents for the type D groups were previously also defined by Remmel, but our definition is slightly different. As a by-product of our proofs, we get bivariate $q$-analogues of Hyatt's recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials. Further corollaries of our results are some symmetry relations for these polynomials and $q$-analogues of generating functions for snakes of types B and D.
