(k,m)-Catalan Numbers and Hook Length Polynomials for Plane Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a formula of A. Postnikov relating binary trees, we define the hook length polynomials for m-ary trees and plane forests, and show that these polynomials have a simple binomial expression. An integer value of this expression is C_{k,m}(n)=\frac{1}{mn+1}{(mn+1)k \choose n}, which we call the (k,m)-Catalan number. For proving the hook length formulas, we also introduce a combinatorial family, (k,m)-ary trees, which are counted by the (k,m)-Catalan numbers.

Parking Functions and Descent Algebras
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 11 (2007), 59-68 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the notion of parkization of a word, a variant of the classical standardization, allows to introduce an internal product on the Hopf algebra of parking functions. Its Catalan subalgebra is stable under this operation and contains the descent algebra as a left ideal.
Weighted 2-Motzkin Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is motivated by two problems recently proposed by Coker on combinatorial identities related to the Narayana polynomials and the Catalan numbers. We find that a bijection of Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde can be used to provide combinatorial interpretations of the identities of Coker when it is applied to weighted plane trees. For the sake of presentation of our combinatorial correspondences, we provide a description of the bijection of Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde in a slightly different manner in the form of a direct construction from plane trees to 2-Motzkin paths without the intermediate step involving the Dyck paths.
Old and young leaves on plane trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A leaf of a plane tree is called an old leaf if it is the leftmost child of its parent, and it is called a young leaf otherwise. In this paper we enumerate plane trees with a given number of old leaves and young leaves. The formula is obtained combinatorially by presenting two bijections between plane trees and 2-Motzkin paths which map young leaves to red horizontal steps, and old leaves to up steps plus one. We derive some implications to the enumeration of restricted permutations with respect to certain statistics such as pairs of consecutive deficiencies, double descents, and ascending runs. Finally, our main bijection is applied to obtain refinements of two identities of Coker, involving refined Narayana numbers and the Catalan numbers.

Counting Lattice Paths By Gessel Pairs
We count a large class of lattice paths by using factorizations of free monoids. Besides the classical lattice paths counting problems related to Catalan numbers, we give a new approach to the problem of counting walks on the slit plane (walks avoid a half line) that was first solved by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We also solve a problem about walks in the half plane avoiding a half line by subsequently applying the factorizations of two different Gessel pairs, giving a generalization of a result of Bousquet-Mélou.

A LL-lattice reformulation of arithmetree over planar rooted trees. Part II
We continue our reformulation of free dendriform algebras, dealing this time with the free dendriform trialgebra generated be Y over planar rooted trees. We propose a 'deformation' of a vectorial coding used in Part I, giving a LL-lattice on rooted planar trees according to the terminology of A. Blass and B. E. Sagan. The three main operations on trees become explicit, giving thus a complementary approach to a very recent work of P. palacios and M. Ronco. Our parenthesis framework allows a more tractable reformulation to explore the properties of the underlying lattice describing operations and simplify a proof of a fundamental theorem related to arithmetics over trees, the so-called arithmetree. Arithmetree is then viewed as a noncommutative extention of (N,+,x), the integers being played by the corollas. We give also two representations of the super Catalan numbers or Schroder numbers.

Canonical characters on quasi-symmetric functions and bivariate Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every character on a graded connected Hopf algebra decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character (Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile, math.CO/0310016). We obtain explicit formulas for the even and odd parts of the universal character on the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. They can be described in terms of Legendre's beta function evaluated at half-integers, or in terms of bivariate Catalan numbers: $$ C(m,n)=\frac{(2m)!(2n)!}{m!(m+n)!n!}. $$ Properties of characters and of quasi-symmetric functions are then used to derive several interesting identities among bivariate Catalan numbers and in particular among Catalan numbers and central binomial coefficients.

A combinatorial approach to jumping particles
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider a model of particles jumping on a row of cells, called in physics the one dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP). More precisely we deal with the TASEP with open or periodic boundary conditions and with two or three types of particles. From the point of view of combinatorics a remarkable feature of this Markov chain is that it involves Catalan numbers in several entries of its stationary distribution. We give a combinatorial interpretation and a simple proof of these observations. In doing this we reveal a second row of cells, which is used by particles to travel backward. As a byproduct we also obtain an interpretation of the occurrence of the Brownian excursion in the description of the density of particles on a long row of cells.

Congruences for Catalan and Motzkin numbers and related sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove various congruences for Catalan and Motzkin numbers as well as related sequences. The common thread is that all these sequences can be expressed in terms of binomial coefficients. Our techniques are combinatorial and algebraic: group actions, induction, and Lucas' congruence for binomial coefficients come into play. A number of our results settle conjectures of Benoit Cloitre and Reinhard Zumkeller. The Thue-Morse sequence appears in several contexts.

Catalan numbers and Schubert polynomials for $w=1(n+1)... 2$
We show that the Schubert polynomial S_w specializes to the Catalan number C_n when $w=1(n+1)...2$. Several proofs of this result as well as a q-analog are given. An application to the singularities of Schubert varieties is given.

Paperfolding and Catalan numbers
We reprove a few results concerning paperfolding sequences using properties of Catalan numbers modulo 2.
Reduction of $m$-Regular Noncrossing Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a reduction algorithm which transforms $m$-regular partitions of $[n]=\{1, 2, ..., n\}$ to $(m-1)$-regular partitions of $[n-1]$. We show that this algorithm preserves the noncrossing property. This yields a simple explanation of an identity due to Simion-Ullman and Klazar in connection with enumeration problems on noncrossing partitions and RNA secondary structures. For ordinary noncrossing partitions, the reduction algorithm leads to a representation of noncrossing partitions in terms of independent arcs and loops, as well as an identity of Simion and Ullman which expresses the Narayana numbers in terms of the Catalan numbers.

Restricted Dumont permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the structure and enumerate Dumont permutations of the first and second kinds avoiding certain patterns or sets of patterns of length 3 and 4. Some cardinalities are given by Catalan numbers, powers of 2, little Schroeder numbers, and other known or related sequences.

A Combinatorial Interpretation of The Numbers $6(2n)! /n! (n+2)!$
It is well known that the numbers $(2m)! (2n)!/m! n! (m+n)!$ are integers, but in general there is no known combinatorial interpretation for them. When $m=0$ these numbers are the middle binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$, and when $m=1$ they are twice the Catalan numbers. In this paper, we give combinatorial interpretations for these numbers when $m=2$ or 3.

Limiting distributions for additive functionals on Catalan trees
Published in Theoret. Comput. Sci. 326 (2004) 69-102 • View PublicationBIB
Additive tree functionals represent the cost of many divide-and-conquer algorithms. We derive the limiting distribution of the additive functionals induced by toll functions of the form (a) n^αwhen α> 0 and (b) log n (the so-called shape functional) on uniformly distributed binary search trees, sometimes called Catalan trees. The Gaussian law obtained in the latter case complements the central limit theorem for the shape functional under the random permutation model. Our results give rise to an apparently new family of distributions containing the Airy distribution (α= 1) and the normal distribution [case (b), and case (a) as $α\downarrow 0$]. The main theoretical tools employed are recent results relating asymptotics of the generating functions of sequences to those of their Hadamard product, and the method of moments.

Refined sign-balance on 321-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The number of even 321-avoiding permutations of length n is equal to the number of odd ones if n is even, and exceeds it by the (n-1)/2th Catalan number otherwise. We present an involution that proves a refinement of this sign-balance property respecting the length of the longest increasing subsequence of the permutation. In addition, this yields a combinatorial proof of a recent analogous result of Adin and Roichman dealing with the last descent. In particular, we answer the question how to obtain the sign of a 321-avoiding permutation from the pair of tableaux resulting from the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. The proof of the simple solution bases on a matching method given by Elizalde and Pak.

Self-describing sequences and the Catalan family tree
We introduce a transformation of finite integer sequences, show that every sequence eventually stabilizes under this transformation and that the number of fixed points is counted by the Catalan numbers. The sequences that are fixed are precisely those that describe themselves -- every term $t$ is equal to the number of previous terms that are smaller than $t$. In addition, we provide an easy way to enumerate all these self-describing sequences by organizing them in a Catalan tree with a specific labelling system.

The Catalan matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show how the set of Dyck paths of length 2n naturally gives rise to a matroid, which we call the "Catalan matroid" C_n. We describe this matroid in detail; among several other results, we show that C_n is self-dual, it is representable over the rationals but not over finite fields F_q with q < n-1, and it has a nice Tutte polynomial. We then generalize our construction to obtain a family of matroids, which we call "shifted matroids". They arose independently and almost simultaneously in the work of Klivans, who showed that they are precisely the matroids whose independence complex is a shifted complex.

Avoiding 2-letter signed patterns
Let B_n be the hyperoctahedral group; that is, the set of all signed permutations on n letters, and let B_n(T) be the set of all signed permutations in B_n which avoids a set T of signed patterns. In this paper, we find all the cardinalities of the sets B_n(T) where $T \subseteq B_2$. This allow us to express these cardinalities via inverse of binomial coefficients, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and Fibonacci numbers.

Dualistic computational algebraic analyses of primal and dual minimum cost flow problems on acyclic tournament graphs
To integer programming problems, computational algebraic approaches using Grobner bases or standard pairs via the discreteness of toric ideals have been studied in recent years. Although these approaches have not given improved time complexity bound compared with existing methods for solving integer programming problems, these give algebraic analysis of their structures. In this paper, we focus on the case that the coefficient matrix is unimodular, especially on the primal and dual minimum cost flow problems, whose structure is rather well-known, but new structures can be revealed by our approach. We study the Grobner bases and standard pairs for unimodular programming, and give the maximum number of dual feasible bases in terms of the volume of polytopes. And for the minimum cost flow problems, we characterize reduced Grobner bases in terms of graphs, and give bounds for the number of dual (resp. primal) feasible bases of the primal (resp. dual) problems: for the primal problems the minimum and the maximum are shown to be 1 and the Catalan number $\frac{1}{d}\tbinom{2(d-1)}{d-1}$, while for the dual problems the lower bound is shown to be $Ω(2^{\lfloor d/6\rfloor})$. To analyze arithmetic degrees, we use two approaches: one is the relation between reduced Gr{ö}bner bases and standard pairs, where the corresponding relation on the minimum cost flow -- between a subset of circuits and dual feasible bases -- has not been so clear, the other is the results in combinatorics related with toric ideals.
