The Hankel Transform of the Sum of Consecutive Generalized Catalan Numbers
We discuss the properties of the Hankel transformation of a sequence whose elements are the sums of consecutive generalized Catalan numbers and find their values in the closed form.

We consider an identity relating Fibonacci numbers to Pascal's triangle discovered by G. E. Andrews. Several authors provided proofs of this identity, all of them rather involved or else relying on sophisticated number theoretical arguments. We not only give a simple and elementary proof, but also show the identity generalizes to arrays other than Pascal's triangle. As an application we obtain identities relating trinomial coefficients and Catalan's triangle to Fibonacci numbers.

We review selected known results on partially ordered patterns (POPs) that include co-unimodal, multi- and shuffle patterns, peaks and valleys ((modified) maxima and minima) in permutations, the Horse permutations and others. We provide several (new) results on a class of POPs built on an arbitrary flat poset, obtaining, as corollaries, the bivariate generating function for the distribution of peaks (valleys) in permutations, links to Catalan, Narayna, and Pell numbers, as well as generalizations of few results in the literature including the descent distribution. Moreover, we discuss q-analogue for a result on non-overlapping segmented POPs. Finally, we suggest several open problems for further research.

In this paper, we prove results on enumerations of sets of Rota-Baxter words in a finite number of generators and a finite number of unary operators. Rota-Baxter words are words formed by concatenating generators and images of words under Rota-Baxter operators. Under suitable conditions, they form canonical bases of free Rota-Baxter algebras and are studied recently in relation to combinatorics, number theory, renormalization in quantum field theory, and operads. Enumeration of a basis is often a first step to choosing a data representation in implementation. Our method applies some simple ideas from formal languages and compositions (ordered partitions) of an integer. We first settle the case of one generator and one operator where both have exponent 1 (the idempotent case). Some integer sequences related to these sets of Rota-Baxter words are known and connected to other combinatorial sequences, such as the Catalan numbers, and others are new. The recurrences satisfied by the generating series of these sequences prompt us to discover an efficient algorithm to enumerate the canonical basis of certain free Rota-Baxter algebras. More general sets of Rota-Baxter words are enumerated with summation techniques related to compositions of integers.
The number of Z-convex polyominoes

In this paper we consider a restricted class of convex polyominoes that we call Z-convex polyominoes. Z-convex polyominoes are polyominoes such that any two pairs of cells can be connected by a monotone path making at most two turns (like the letter Z). In particular they are convex polyominoes, but they appear to resist standard decompositions. We propose a construction by ``inflation'' that allows to write a system of functional equations for their generating functions. The generating function P(t) of Z-convex polyominoes with respect to the semi-perimeter turns out to be algebraic all the same and surprisingly, like the generating function of convex polyominoes, it can be expressed as a rational function of t and the generating function of Catalan numbers.

The number of tree-rooted maps, that is, rooted planar maps with a distinguished spanning tree, of size $n$ is C(n)C(n+1) where C(n)=binomial(2n,n)/(n+1) is the nth Catalan number. We present a (long awaited) simple bijection which explains this result. We prove that our bijection is isomorphic to a former recursive construction on shuffles of parenthesis systems due to Cori, Dulucq and Viennot.
Noncrossing partitions in surprising locations

Certain mathematical structures make a habit of reoccuring in the most diverse list of settings. Some obvious examples exhibiting this intrusive type of behavior include the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, the quaternions, and the modular group. In this article, the focus is on a lesser known example: the noncrossing partition lattice. The focus of the article is a gentle introduction to the lattice itself in three of its many guises: as a way to encode parking functions, as a key part of the foundations of noncommutative probability, and as a building block for a contractible space acted on by a braid group. Since this article is aimed primarily at nonspecialists, each area is briefly introduced along the way.
What power of two divides a weighted Catalan number?

Given a sequence of integers b = (b_0,b_1,b_2,...) one gives a Dyck path P of length 2n the weight
wt(P) = b_{h_1} b_{h_2} ... b_{h_n},
where h_i is the height of the ith ascent of P. The corresponding weighted Catalan number is
C_n^b = sum_P wt(P),
where the sum is over all Dyck paths of length 2n. So, in particular, the ordinary Catalan numbers C_n correspond to b_i = 1 for all i >= 0. Let xi(n) stand for the base two exponent of n, i.e., the largest power of 2 dividing n. We give a condition on b which implies that
xi(C_n^b) = xi(C_n).
In the special case b_i=(2i+1)^2, this settles a conjecture of Postnikov about the number of plane Morse links. Our proof generalizes the recent combinatorial proof of Deutsch and Sagan of the classical formula for xi(C_n).
Dominant regions in noncrystallographic hyperplane arrangements

For a crystallographic root system, dominant regions in the Catalan hyperplane arrangement are in bijection with antichains in a partial order on the positive roots. For a noncrystallographic root system, the analogous arrangement and regions have importance in the representation theory of an associated graded Hecke algebra. Since there is also an analogous root order, it is natural to hope that a similar bijection can be used to understand these regions. We show that such a bijection does hold for type $H_3$ and for type $I_2(m)$, including arbitrary ratio of root lengths when $m$ is even, but does not hold for type $H_4$. We give a criterion that explains this failure and a list of the 16 antichains in the $H_4$ root order which correspond to empty regions.

We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3.
These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco.
Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.
The Butterfly Decomposition of Plane Trees

We introduce the notion of doubly rooted plane trees and give a decomposition of these trees, called the butterfly decomposition which turns out to have many applications. From the butterfly decomposition we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between doubly rooted plane trees and free Dyck paths, which implies a simple derivation of a relation between the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients. We also establish a one-to-one correspondence between leaf-colored doubly rooted plane trees and free Schröder paths. The classical Chung-Feller theorem on free Dyck paths and some generalizations and variations with respect to Dyck paths and Schröder paths with flaws turn out to be immediate consequences of the butterfly decomposition and the preorder traversal of plane trees. We obtain two involutions on free Dyck paths and free Schröder paths, leading to two combinatorial identities. We also use the butterfly decomposition to give a combinatorial treatment of the generating function for the number of chains in plane trees due to Klazar. We further study the average size of chains in plane trees with $n$ edges and show that this number asymptotically tends to ${n+9 \over 6}$.
The 136th manifestation of C_n
We show bijectively that the Catalan number C_n counts Dyck (n+1)-paths in which the terminal descent is of even length and all other descents to ground level (if any) are of odd length.

By a very simple argument, we prove that if $l,m,n$ are nonnegative integers then $$\sum_{k=0}^l(-1)^{m-k}\binom{l}{k}\binom{m-k}{n}\binom{2k}{k-2l+m} =\sum_{k=0}^l\binom{l}{k}\binom{2k}{n}\binom{n-l}{m+n-3k-l}.
On the basis of this identity, for $d,r=0,1,2,...$ we construct explicit $F(d,r)$ and $G(d,r)$ such that for any prime $p>\max\{d,r\}$ we have
\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}k^r C_{k+d}\equiv \cases F(d,r)(mod p)& if 3|p-1, \\G(d,r)\ (mod p)& if 3|p-2,
where $C_n$ denotes the Catalan number $(n+1)^{-1}\binom{2n}{n}$. For example, when $p\geq 5$ is a prime, we have
\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}k^2C_k\equiv\cases-2/3 (mod p)& if 3|p-1, \1/3 (mod p)& if 3|p-2;
and
\sum_{0<k<p-4}\frac{C_{k+4}}k \equiv\cases 503/30 (mod p)& if 3|p-1, -100/3 (mod p)& if 3|p-2.
This paper also contains some new recurrence relations for Catalan numbers.

We give a combinatorial interpretation of a matrix identity on Catalan numbers and the sequence $(1, 4, 4^2, 4^3, ...)$ which has been derived by Shapiro, Woan and Getu by using Riordan arrays. By giving a bijection between weighted partial Motzkin paths with an elevation line and weighted free Motzkin paths, we find a matrix identity on the number of weighted Motzkin paths and the sequence $(1, k, k^2, k^3, ...)$ for any $k \geq 2$. By extending this argument to partial Motzkin paths with multiple elevation lines, we give a combinatorial proof of an identity recently obtained by Cameron and Nkwanta. A matrix identity on colored Dyck paths is also given, leading to a matrix identity for the sequence $(1, t^2+t, (t^2+t)^2, ...)$.
q-Catalan numbers and q-Narayana polynomials
In this note we show that various natural q-analogues of the Catalan numbers can be obtained in a uniform way. Furthermore we compute their Hankel determinants.
A combinatorial interpretation of the eigensequence for composition
The monic sequence that shifts left under convolution with itself is the Catalan numbers with 130+ combinatorial interpretations. Here we establish a combinatorial interpretation for the monic sequence that shifts left under composition: it counts permutations that contain a 3241 pattern only as part of a 35241 pattern. We give two recurrences, the first allowing relatively fast computation, the second similar to one for the Catalan numbers. Among the 4 times 4! = 96 similarly restricted patterns involving 4 letters (such as 4\underline{2}31: a 431 pattern only occurs as part of a 4231), four different counting sequences arise: 64 give the Catalan numbers, 16 give the Bell numbers, 12 give sequence A051295 in OEIS, and 4 give a new sequence with an explicit formula.
Permutohedra, associahedra, and beyond

The volume and the number of lattice points of the permutohedron P_n are given by certain multivariate polynomials that have remarkable combinatorial properties. We give several different formulas for these polynomials. We also study a more general class of polytopes that includes the permutohedron, the associahedron, the cyclohedron, the Pitman-Stanley polytope, and various generalized associahedra related to wonderful compactifications of De Concini-Procesi. These polytopes are constructed as Minkowski sums of simplices. We calculate their volumes and describe their combinatorial structure. The coefficients of monomials in Vol P_n are certain positive integer numbers, which we call the mixed Eulerian numbers. These numbers are equal to the mixed volumes of hypersimplices. Various specializations of these numbers give the usual Eulerian numbers, the Catalan numbers, the numbers (n+1)^{n-1} of trees, the binomial coefficients, etc. We calculate the mixed Eulerian numbers using certain binary trees. Many results are extended to an arbitrary Weyl group.
On partitions avoiding 3-crossings

A partition on $[n]$ has a crossing if there exists $i\_1<i\_2<j\_1<j\_2$ such that $i\_1$ and $j\_1$ are in the same block, $i\_2$ and $j\_2$ are in the same block, but $i\_1$ and $i\_2$ are not in the same block. Recently, Chen et al. refined this classical notion by introducing $k$-crossings, for any integer $k$. In this new terminology, a classical crossing is a 2-crossing. The number of partitions of $[n]$ avoiding 2-crossings is well-known to be the $n$th Catalan number $C\_n={{2n}\choose n}/(n+1)$. This raises the question of counting $k$-noncrossing partitions for $k\ge 3$. We prove that the sequence counting 3-noncrossing partitions is P-recursive, that is, satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. We give explicitly such a recursion. However, we conjecture that $k$-noncrossing partitions are not P-recursive, for $k\ge 4$.
Matchings Avoiding Partial Patterns

We show that matchings avoiding certain partial patterns are counted by the 3-Catalan numbers. We give a characterization of 12312-avoiding matchings in terms of restrictions on the corresponding oscillating tableaux. We also find a bijection between Schröder paths without peaks at level one and matchings avoiding both patterns 12312 and 121323. Such objects are counted by the super-Catalan numbers or the little Schröder numbers. A refinement of the super-Catalan numbers is obtained by fixing the number of crossings in the matchings. In the sense of Wilf-equivalence, we find that the patterns 12132, 12123, 12321, 12231, 12213 are equivalent to 12312.
Some identities for the Catalan and Fine numbers
We establish combinatorial interpretations of several identities for the Catalan and Fine numbers and, along the way, we present some new bijections of independent interest. Briefly, we show that C_{n} = 1/(n+1) Sum_{k} (n+1)choose(2k+1) (n+k)choose(k) counts ordered trees on n edges by number of interior vertices adjacent to a leaf, and C_{n} = 2/(n+1) Sum_{k} (n+1)choose(k+2) (n-2)choose(k) counts Dyck n-paths by number of long interior inclines. We also give an analogue for the Fine numbers of Touchard's Catalan number identity.
