Implementation of a Unimodularity Test
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper describes implementation and computational results of a polynomial test of total unimodularity. The test is a simplified version of a prior method. The program also decides two related unimodularity properties. The software is available free of charge in source code form under the Boost Software License.

The interaction of collinear gaps of arbitrary charge in a two dimensional dimer system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The correlation of gaps in dimer systems was introduced in 1963 by Fisher and Stephenson, who looked at the interaction of two monomers generated by the rigid exclusion of dimers on the closely packed square lattice. In previous work we considered the analogous problem on the hexagonal lattice, and we extended the set-up to include the correlation of any finite number of monomer clusters. For fairly general classes of monomer clusters we proved that the asymptotics of their correlation is given, for large separations between the clusters, by a multiplicative version of Coulomb's law for 2D electrostatics. However, our previous results required that the monomer clusters consist (with possibly one exception) of an even number of monomers. In this paper we determine the asymptotics of general defect clusters along a lattice diagonal in the square lattice (involving an arbitrary, even or odd number of monomers), and find that it is given by the same Coulomb law. We also obtain a conceptual interpretation for the multiplicative constant as the product of the correlations of the individual clusters.

Crystal energy functions via the charge in types A and C
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 273(1) (2013) 401-426 • View PublicationBIB
The Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials (at t=0) provides a statistic which we call charge. In types A and C it can be defined on tensor products of Kashiwara-Nakashima single column crystals. In this paper we prove that the charge is equal to the (negative of the) energy function on affine crystals. The algorithm for computing charge is much simpler and can be more efficiently computed than the recursive definition of energy in terms of the combinatorial R-matrix.

From Macdonald Polynomials to a Charge Statistic beyond Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The charge is an intricate statistic on words, due to Lascoux and Schutzenberger, which gives positive combinatorial formulas for Lusztig's q-analogue of weight multiplicities and the energy function on affine crystals, both of type A. As these concepts are defined for all Lie types, it has been a long-standing problem to express them based on a generalization of charge. I present a method for addressing this problem in classical Lie types, based on the recent Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials and the quantum Bruhat order on the corresponding Weyl group. The details of the method are carried out in type A (where we recover the classical charge) and type C (where we define a new statistic).

Quadratic spaces and holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1993, Schellekens obtained a list of possible 71 Lie algebras of holomorphic vertex operator algebras with central charge 24. However, not all cases are known to exist. The aim of this article is to construct new holomorphic vertex operator algebras using the theory of framed vertex operator algebras and to determine the Lie algebra structures of their weight one subspaces. In particular, we study holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras associated to subcodes of the triply even codes $\RM(1,4)^3$ and $\RM(1,4)\oplus \EuD(d_{16}^+)$ of length 48. These vertex operator algebras correspond to the holomorphic simple current extensions of the lattice type vertex operator algebras $(V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+)^{\otimes 3}$ and $V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+\otimes V_{\sqrt{2}D_{16}^+}^+$. We determine such extensions using a quadratic space structure on the set of all irreducible modules $R(W)$ of $W$ when $W= (V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+)^{\otimes 3}$ or $V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+\otimes V_{\sqrt{2}D_{16}^+}^+$. As our main results, we construct seven new holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 in Schellekens' list and obtain a complete list of all Lie algebra structures associated to the weight one subspaces of holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24.

Exact Solution of a Monomer-Dimer Problem: A Single Boundary Monomer on a Non-Bipartite Lattice
Published in Physical Review E 83 (2011) 011106 • View PublicationBIB
We solve the monomer-dimer problem on a non-bipartite lattice, the simple quartic lattice with cylindrical boundary conditions, with a single monomer residing on the boundary. Due to the non-bipartite nature of the lattice, the well-known method of a Temperley bijection of solving single-monomer problems cannot be used. In this paper we derive the solution by mapping the problem onto one on close-packed dimers on a related lattice. Finite-size analysis of the solution is carried out. We find from asymptotic expansions of the free energy that the central charge in the logarithmic conformal field theory assumes the value $c=-2$.

Laguerre and Meixner symmetric functions, and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sciences (New York) 174 (2011), no. 1, 41-57 • View PublicationBIB
The Laguerre symmetric functions introduced in the note are indexed by arbitrary partitions and depend on two continuous parameters. The top degree homogeneous component of every Laguerre symmetric function coincides with the Schur function with the same index. Thus, the Laguerre symmetric functions form a two-parameter family of inhomogeneous bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These new symmetric functions are obtained from the N-variate symmetric polynomials of the same name by a procedure of analytic continuation. The Laguerre symmetric functions are eigenvectors of a second order differential operator, which depends on the same two parameters and serves as the infinitesimal generator of an infinite-dimensional diffusion process X(t). The process X(t) admits approximation by some jump processes related to one more new family of symmetric functions, the Meixner symmetric functions. In equilibrium, the process X(t) can be interpreted as a time-dependent point process on the punctured real line R\{0}, and the point configurations may be interpreted as doubly infinite collections of particles of two opposite charges with log-gas-type interaction. The dynamical correlation functions of the equilibrium process have determinantal form: they are given by minors of the so-called extended Whittaker kernel, introduced earlier in a paper by Borodin and the author.

The interaction of a gap with a free boundary in a two dimensional dimer system
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 302 (2011), 253-289 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a fixed vertical lattice line of the unit triangular lattice in the plane, and let $\Cal H$ be the half plane to the left of $\ell$. We consider lozenge tilings of $\Cal H$ that have a triangular gap of side-length two and in which $\ell$ is a free boundary - i.e., tiles are allowed to protrude out half-way across $\ell$. We prove that the correlation function of this gap near the free boundary has asymptotics $\frac{1}{4πr}$, $r\to\infty$, where $r$ is the distance from the gap to the free boundary. This parallels the electrostatic phenomenon by which the field of an electric charge near a conductor can be obtained by the method of images.

Generalized exponents of small representations. I

This is the first paper in a sequence devoted to giving manifestly non-negative formulas for generalized exponents of small representations in all types. The main part of this paper illustrates the overall structure of the argument on root systems of type A and discusses the relationship with the Lascoux-Schutzenberger charge formula.

The emergence of the electrostatic field as a Feynman sum in random tilings with holes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random lozenge tilings on the triangular lattice with holes $Q_1,...,Q_n$ in some fixed position. For each unit triangle not in a hole, consider the average orientation of the lozenge covering it. We show that the scaling limit of this discrete field is the electrostatic field obtained when regarding each hole $Q_i$ as an electrical charge of magnitude equal to the difference between the number of unit triangles of the two different orientations inside $Q_i$. This is then restated in terms of random surfaces, yielding the result that the average over surfaces with prescribed height at the union of the boundaries of the holes is, in the scaling limit, a sum of helicoids.

The scaling limit of the correlation of holes on the triangular lattice with periodic boundary conditions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the correlation of holes on the triangular lattice under periodic boundary conditions and study its asymptotics as the distances between the holes grow to infinity. We prove that the joint correlation of an arbitrary collection of lattice-triangular holes of even sides satisfies, for large separations between the holes, a Coulomb law and a superposition principle that perfectly parallel the laws of two dimensional electrostatics, with physical charges corresponding to holes, and their magnitude to the difference between the number of right-pointing and left-pointing unit triangles in each hole. We detail this parallel by indicating that, as a consequence of our result, the relative probabilities of finding a fixed collection of holes at given mutual distances (when sampling uniformly at random over all unit rhombus tilings of the complement of the holes) approaches, for large separations between the holes, the relative probabilities of finding the corresponding two dimensional physical system of charges at given mutual distances. Physical temperature corresponds to a parameter refining the background triangular lattice. We give an equivalent phrasing of our result in terms of covering surfaces of given holonomy. From this perspective, two dimensional electrostatics arises by averaging over all possible discrete geometries of the covering surfaces.

A Combinatorial Formula for Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for the Macdonald polynomial H_mu(x;q,t) which had been conjectured by the first author. Corollaries to our main theorem include the expansion of H_mu(x;q,t) in terms of LLT polynomials, a new proof of the charge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a new proof of Knop and Sahi's combinatorial formula for Jack polynomials as well as a lifting of their formula to integral form Macdonald polynomials, and a new combinatorial rule for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) in the case that mu is a partition with parts less than or equal to 2.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. IV. Chromatic polynomial with cyclic boundary conditions
Published in J.Statist.Phys. 122 (2006) 705-760 • View PublicationBIB
We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n square- and triangular-lattice strips of widths 2\leq m \leq 8 with cyclic boundary conditions. This polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the antiferromagnetic q-state Potts model defined on the lattice G. We show how to construct the transfer matrix in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation for such lattices and obtain the accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We find that the different phases that appear in this model can be characterized by a topological parameter. We also compute the bulk and surface free energies and the central charge.

Combinatorics of crystal graphs and Kostka-Foulkes polynomials for the root systems $B_{n},C_{n}$ and $D_{n}.$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use Kashiwara-Nakashima's combinatorics of crystal graphs associated to the roots sytems $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ to extend the results of \QCITE{cite}{}{lec3} and \QCITE{cite}{}{Mor} by showing that Morris type recurrence formulas also exist for the orthogonal root systems. We derive from these formulas a statistic on Kashiwara-Nakashima's tableaux of types $B_{n},C_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ generalizing Lascoux-Sch\UNICODE{0xfc}tzenberger's charge and from which it is possible to compute the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K_{λ,μ}(q)$ with restrictive conditions on $(λ,μ)$ . This statistic is different from that obtained in \QCITE{cite}{}{lec3} from the cyclage graph structure on tableaux of type $C_{n}$. We show that such a structure also exists for the tableaux of types $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ but can not be simply related to the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. Finally we give explicit formulas for $K_{λ,μ}(q)$ when $| λ| \leq 3,$ or $n=2$ and $μ=0$.

Spanning forests and the q-state Potts model in the limit q \to 0
Published in J.Statist.Phys. 119 (2005) 1153-1281 • View PublicationBIB
We study the q-state Potts model with nearest-neighbor coupling v=e^{βJ}-1 in the limit q,v \to 0 with the ratio w = v/q held fixed. Combinatorially, this limit gives rise to the generating polynomial of spanning forests; physically, it provides information about the Potts-model phase diagram in the neighborhood of (q,v) = (0,0). We have studied this model on the square and triangular lattices, using a transfer-matrix approach at both real and complex values of w. For both lattices, we have computed the symbolic transfer matrices for cylindrical strips of widths 2 \le L \le 10, as well as the limiting curves of partition-function zeros in the complex w-plane. For real w, we find two distinct phases separated by a transition point w=w_0, where w_0 = -1/4 (resp. w_0 = -0.1753 \pm 0.0002) for the square (resp. triangular) lattice. For w > w_0 we find a non-critical disordered phase, while for w < w_0 our results are compatible with a massless Berker-Kadanoff phase with conformal charge c = -2 and leading thermal scaling dimension x_{T,1} = 2 (marginal operator). At w = w_0 we find a "first-order critical point": the first derivative of the free energy is discontinuous at w_0, while the correlation length diverges as w \downarrow w_0 (and is infinite at w = w_0). The critical behavior at w = w_0 seems to be the same for both lattices and it differs from that of the Berker-Kadanoff phase: our results suggest that the conformal charge is c = -1, the leading thermal scaling dimension is x_{T,1} = 0, and the critical exponents are ν= 1/d = 1/2 and α= 1.

Kostka-Foulkes polynomials cyclage graphs and charge statistic for the root system $C_{n}$

We establish a Morris type recurrence formula for the root system $C_{n}$.\ Next we introduce cyclage graphs for the corresponding Kashiwara-Nakashima's tableaux and use them to define a charge statistic. Finally we conjecture that this charge may be used to compute the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials for type $C_{n}.$

A random tiling model for two dimensional electrostatics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider triangular holes on the hexagonal lattice and we study their interaction when the rest of the lattice is covered by dimers. More precisely, we analyze the joint correlation of these triangular holes in a ``sea'' of dimers. We determine the asymptotics of the joint correlation (for large separations between the holes) in the case when one of the holes has side 1, all remaining holes have side 2, and the holes are distributed symmetrically with respect to a symmetry axis. Our result has a striking physical interpretation. If we regard the holes as electrical charges, with charge equal to the difference between the number of down-pointing and up-pointing unit triangles in a hole, the logarithm of the joint correlation behaves exactly like the electrostatic potential energy of this two-dimensional electrostatic system: it is obtained by a Superposition Principle from the interaction of all pairs, and the pair interactions are according to Coulomb's law.

Jack polynomials in superspace
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 242 (2003) 331-360 • View PublicationBIB
This work initiates the study of {\it orthogonal} symmetric polynomials in superspace. Here we present two approaches leading to a family of orthogonal polynomials in superspace that generalize the Jack polynomials. The first approach relies on previous work by the authors in which eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland Hamiltonian were constructed. Orthogonal eigenfunctions are now obtained by diagonalizing the first nontrivial element of a bosonic tower of commuting conserved charges not containing this Hamiltonian. Quite remarkably, the expansion coefficients of these orthogonal eigenfunctions in the supermonomial basis are stable with respect to the number of variables. The second and more direct approach amounts to symmetrize products of non-symmetric Jack polynomials with monomials in the fermionic variables. This time, the orthogonality is inherited from the orthogonality of the non-symmetric Jack polynomials, and the value of the norm is given explicitly.

Dimers on a simple-quartic net with a vacancy
Published in Journal of Stat. Phys. 110, 671-689 (2003) • View PublicationBIB
A seminal milestone in lattice statistics is the exact solution of the enumeration of dimers on a simple-quartic net obtained by Fisher,Kasteleyn, and Temperley (FKT) in 1961. An outstanding related and yet unsolved problem is the enumeration of dimers on a net with vacant sites. Here we consider this vacant-site problem with a single vacancy occurring at certain specific sites on the boundary of a simple-quartic net. First, using a bijection between dimer and spanning tree configurations due to Temperley, Kenyon, Propp, and Wilson, we establish that the dimer generating function is independent of the location of the vacancy, and deduce a closed-form expression for the generating function. We next carry out finite-size analyses of this solution as well as that of the FKT solution. Our analyses lead to a logarithmic correction term in the large-size expansion for the vacancy problem with free boundary conditions. A concrete example exhibiting this difference is given. We also find the central charge c=-2 in the language of conformal field theory for the vacancy problem, as versus the value c=1 when there is no vacancy.

Tableau atoms and a new Macdonald positivity conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Λ$ be the space of symmetric functions and $V_k$ be the subspace spanned by the modified Schur functions $\{S_λ[X/(1-t)]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$. We introduce a new family of symmetric polynomials, $\{A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$, constructed from sums of tableaux using the charge statistic. We conjecture that the polynomials $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ form a basis for $V_k$ and that the Macdonald polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$ expand positively in terms of our polynomials. A proof of this conjecture would not only imply the Macdonald positivity conjecture, but would substantially refine it. Our construction of the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ relies on the use of tableaux combinatorics and yields various properties and conjectures on the nature of these polynomials. Another important development following from our investigation is that the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ seem to play the same role for $V_k$ as the Schur functions do for $Λ$. In particular, this has led us to the discovery of many generalizations of properties held by the Schur functions, such as Pieri and Littlewood-Richardson type coefficients.
