An algorithm is presented that generates sets of size equal to the degree of a given variety defined by a homogeneous ideal. This algorithm suggests a versatile framework to study various problems in combinatorial algebraic geometry and related fields.

A generalization of operads based on subgraph contractions
Published in Inter Math Res Notices Issue 14 (2024) 10732-10775 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of the notion of operad that we call a contractad, whose set of operations is indexed by connected graphs and whose composition rules are numbered by contractions of connected subgraphs. We show that many classical operads, such as the operad of commutative algebras, Lie algebras, associative algebras, pre-Lie algebras, the little disks operad, and the operad of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ admit generalizations to contractads. We explain that standard tools like Koszul duality and the machinery of Gröbner bases can be easily generalized to contractads. We verify the Koszul property of the commutative, Lie, associative, and Gerstenhaber contractads.

Cyclotomic generating functions
It is a remarkable fact that for many statistics on finite sets of combinatorial objects, the roots of the corresponding generating function are each either a complex root of unity or zero. These and related polynomials have been studied for many years by a variety of authors from the fields of combinatorics, representation theory, probability, number theory, and commutative algebra. We call such polynomials \textbf{cyclotomic generating functions} (CGFs). With Konvalinka, we have studied the support and asymptotic distribution of the coefficients of several families of CGFs arising from tableau and forest combinatorics. In this paper, we survey general CGFs from algebraic, analytic, and asymptotic perspectives. We review some of the many known examples of CGFs in combinatorial representation theory; describe their coefficients, moments, cumulants, and characteristic functions; and give a variety of necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence arising from probability, commutative algebra, and invariant theory. As a sample result, we show that CGFs are ``generically'' asymptotically normal, generalizing a result of Diaconis on $q$-binomial coefficients using work of Hwang--Zacharovas. We include several open problems concerning CGFs.

Graph rings and ideals: Wolmer Vasconcelos' contributions
This is a survey article featuring some of Wolmer Vasconcelos' contributions to commutative algebra, and explaining how Vasconcelos' work and insights have contributed to the development of commutative algebra and its interaction with other areas to the present. We discuss the Vasconcelos' function and the Vasconcelos' number (v-number for short) of graded ideals and their relation to coding theory, and the interplay of Simis and normal monomial ideals with combinatorial optimization problems, blowup algebras, and resurgence theory. The regularity of subrings of normal k-uniform monomial ideals is shown to be a monotone function, and we give a normality criterion for edge ideals of graphs using Ehrhart rings.

Idempotentization of Affine Schemes and Sheaves
In this article, we introduce the idempotentization process, which bears some philosophical and mathematical similarities with modern analytification and tropicalization. Idempotentization associates to any affine scheme an idempotent version of itself with respect to a fixed covering by distinguished affine open subschemes. Once this cover is fixed, we can functorially associate a Zariski sheaf of rings or modules to a sheaf of idempotent semiring or a sheaf of idempotent semimodules. We show that idempotentization is independent of the chosen cover and in the Noetherian case, the idempotentization of the structure sheaf recovers the global sections. Underlying our formalism is a combinatorial reflection of lattices of subobjects of ordered-theoretic objects seen as lattices coming from commutative algebra. This has topological consequences for the semiring of subtractive ideals of a commutative semiring $S$: On one hand, it is a topological retract of the semiring of congruence relations of $S$ for the coarse lower topology. On the other hand, it is a topological retract of the semiring of ideals of $S$ for the coarse upper topology.

The Hilbert series of the superspace coinvariant ring
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 12 (2024) e16 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Ω_n$ be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex $n$-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank $n$. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts diagonally on $Ω_n$ by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let $SI_n \subseteq Ω_n$ be the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient $SR_n = Ω_n / SI_n$ of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of $SR_n$ and prove an `operator theorem' which characterizes the harmonic space $SH_n \subseteq Ω_n$ attached to $SR_n$ in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results which were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach, and Zabrocki.

Antipode formulas for pattern Hopf algebras
The permutation pattern Hopf algebra is a commutative filtered and connected Hopf algebra. Its product structure stems from counting patterns of a permutation, interpreting the coefficients as permutation quasi-shuffles. The Hopf algebra was shown to be a free commutative algebra and to fit into a general framework of pattern Hopf algebras, via species with restrictions. In this paper we introduce the cancellation-free and grouping-free formula for the antipode of the permutation pattern Hopf algebra. To obtain this formula, we use the popular sign-reversing involution method, by Benedetti and Sagan. This formula has applications on polynomial invariants on permutations, in particular for obtaining reciprocity theorems. On our way, we also introduce the packed word patterns Hopf algebra and present a formula for its antipode. Other pattern algebras are discussed here, notably on parking functions, which recovers notions recently studied by Adeniran and Pudwell, and by Qiu and Remmel.

Log-concavity of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences
Published in J. Commut. Algebra 16 (2024), no. 2, 245--256 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate log-concavity in the context of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences, two classes of numerical sequences introduced by Stanley in the late Seventies whose structural properties have since been the object of a remarkable amount of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra. However, a systematic study of the log-concavity of these sequences began only recently, thanks to a paper by Iarrobino. The goal of this note is to address two general questions left open by Iarrobino's work: 1) Given the integer pair $(r,t)$, are all level Hilbert functions of codimension $r$ and type $t$ log-concave? 2) How about pure $O$-sequences with the same parameters? Iarrobino's main results consisted of a positive answer to 1) for $r=2$ and any $t$, and for $(r,t)=(3,1)$. Further, he proved that the answer to 1) is negative for $(r,t)=(4,1)$. Our chief contribution to 1) is to provide a negative answer in all remaining cases, with the exception of $(r,t)=(3,2)$, which is still open in any characteristic. We then propose a few detailed conjectures specifically on level Hilbert functions of codimension 3 and type 2. As for question 2), we show that the answer is positive for all pairs $(r,1)$; negative for $(r,t)=(3,4)$; and negative for any pair $(r,t)$ with $r\ge 4$ and $2\le t\le r+1$. Interestingly, the main case that remains open is again $(r,t)=(3,2)$. Further, we conjecture that, in analogy with the behavior of arbitrary level Hilbert functions, log-concavity fails for pure $O$-sequences of any codimension $r\ge 3$ and type $t$ large enough.
Purity of monoids and characteristic-free splittings in semigroup rings

Inspired by methods in prime characteristic in commutative algebra, we introduce and study combinatorial invariants of seminormal monoids. We relate such numbers with the singularities and homological invariants of the semigroup ring associated to the monoid. Our results are characteristic independent.

Root polytopes, tropical types, and toric edge ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider arrangements of tropical hyperplanes where the apices of the hyperplanes are taken to infinity in certain directions. Such an arrangement defines a decomposition of Euclidean space where a cell is determined by its `type' data, analogous to the covectors of an oriented matroid. By work of Develin-Sturmfels and Fink-Rincón, these `tropical complexes' are dual to (regular) subdivisions of root polytopes, which in turn are in bijection with mixed subdivisions of certain generalized permutohedra. Extending previous work with Joswig-Sanyal, we show how a natural monomial labeling of these complexes describes polynomial relations (syzygies) among `type ideals' which arise naturally from the combinatorial data of the arrangement. In particular, we show that the cotype ideal is Alexander dual to a corresponding initial ideal of the lattice ideal of the underlying root polytope. This leads to novel ways of studying algebraic properties of various monomial and toric ideals, as well as relating them to combinatorial and geometric properties. In particular, our methods of studying the dimension of the tropical complex leads to new formulas for homological invariants of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs, which have been extensively studied in the commutative algebra community.

Identities of the multi-variate independence polynomials from heaps theory
Published in Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. Math. Sci. 134 (2024), no. 1, Paper No. 16, 11 pp • View PublicationBIB
We study and derive identities for the multi-variate independence polynomials from the perspective of heaps theory. Using the inversion formula and the combinatorics of partially commutative algebras we show how the multi-variate version of Godsil type identity as well as the fundamental identity can be obtained from weight preserving bijections. Finally, we obtain a new multi-variate identity involving connected bipartite subgraphs similar to the Christoffel-Darboux type identities obtained by Bencs.

Lefschetz duality for local cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since the 1974 paper by Peskine and Szpiro, liaison theory via complete intersections, and more generally via Gorenstein varieties, has become a standard tool kit in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, allowing to compare algebraic features of linked varieties. In this paper we develop a liaison theory via quasi-Gorenstein varieties, a much broader class than Gorenstein varieties: it is not misleading to think that quasi-Gorenstein rings are to Gorenstein rings as manifolds are to spheres. As applications, we derive a connectedness property of quasi-Gorenstein subspace arrangements generalizing previous results by Benedetti and the second author, and we deduce the classical topological Lefschetz duality via the Stanley-Reisner correspondence.

Refined Ehrhart series and bigraded rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a natural set of refinements of the Ehrhart series of a closed polytope, first considered by Chapoton. We compute the refined series in full generality for a simplex of dimension d, a cross-polytope of dimension d, respectively a hypercube of dimension d<4, using commutative algebra. We deduce summation formulae for products of q-integers with different arguments, generalizing a classical identity due to MacMahon and Carlitz. We also present a characterisation of a certain refined Eulerian polynomial in algebraic terms.

Invariant Theory for the free left-regular band and a q-analogue
Published in Pacific J. Math. 322 (2023) 251-280 • View PublicationBIB
We examine from an invariant theory viewpoint the monoid algebras for two monoids having large symmetry groups. The first monoid is the free left-regular band on $n$ letters, defined on the set of all injective words, that is, the words with at most one occurrence of each letter. This monoid carries the action of the symmetric group. The second monoid is one of its $q$-analogues, considered by K. Brown, carrying an action of the finite general linear group. In both cases, we show that the invariant subalgebras are semisimple commutative algebras, and characterize them using Stirling and $q$-Stirling numbers. We then use results from the theory of random walks and random-to-top shuffling to decompose the entire monoid algebra into irreducibles, simultaneously as a module over the invariant ring and as a group representation. Our irreducible decompositions are described in terms of derangement symmetric functions introduced by Désarménien and Wachs.

On robustness and related properties on toric ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A toric ideal is called robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal set of generators, and is called generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis equals its universal Markov basis (the union of all its minimal sets of binomial generators). Robust and generalized robust toric ideals are both interesting from both a Commutative Algebra and an Algebraic Statistics perspective. However, only a few nontrivial examples of such ideals are known. In this work we study these properties for toric ideals of both graphs and numerical semigroups. For toric ideals of graphs, we characterize combinatorially the graphs giving rise to robust and to generalized robust toric ideals generated by quadratic binomials. As a byproduct, we obtain families of Koszul rings. For toric ideals of numerical semigroups, we determine that one of its initial ideals is a complete intersection if and only if the semigroup belongs to the so-called family of free numerical semigroups. Hence, we characterize all complete intersection numerical semigroups which are minimally generated by one of its Gröbner basis and, as a consequence, all the Betti numbers of the toric ideal and its corresponding initial ideal coincide. Moreover, also for numerical semigroups, we prove that the ideal is generalized robust if and only if the semigroup has a unique Betti element and that there are only trivial examples of robust ideals. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Deletion-Restriction for Logarithmic Forms on Multiarrangements
We consider the behaviour of logarithmic differential forms on arrangements and multiarrangements of hyperplanes under the operations of deletion and restriction, extending early work of Günter Ziegler. The restriction of logarithmic forms to a hyperplane may or may not be surjective, and we measure the failure of surjectivity in terms of commutative algebra of logarithmic forms and derivations. We find that the dual notion of restriction of logarithmic vector fields behaves similarly but inequivalently. A main result is that, if an arrangement is free, then any arrangement obtained by adding a hyperplane has the "dual strongly plus-one generated" property. One application is another proof of a main result of a paper by the first author characterizing when adding a hyperplane to a free arrangement remains free. A further application is to resolve two conjectures due to Ziegler, which we defer to a sequel.

New approaches to $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ weight system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The present paper has been motivated by an aspiration for understanding the weight system corresponding to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The straightforward approach to computing the values of a Lie algebra weight system on a general chord diagram amounts to elaborating calculations in the noncommutative universal enveloping algebra, in spite of the fact that the result belongs to the center of the latter. The first approach is based on a suggestion due to M. Kazarian to define an invariant of permutations taking values in the center of the universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The restriction of this invariant to involutions without fixed points (such an involution determines a chord diagram) coincides with the value of the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -weight system on this chord diagram. We describe the recursion allowing one to compute the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -invariant of permutations and demonstrate how it works in a number of examples. The second approach is based on the Harish-Chandra isomorphism for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. This isomorphism identifies the center of the universal enveloping algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ with the ring $Λ^*(N)$ of shifted symmetric polynomials in $N$ variables. The Harish-Chandra projection can be applied separately for each monomial in the defining polynomial of the weight system; as a result, the main body of computations can be done in a commutative algebra, rather than noncommutative one.

A generalisation of quasi-shuffle algebras and an application to multiple zeta values
A large family of relations among multiple zeta values may be described using the combinatorics of shuffle and quasi-shuffle algebras. While the structure of shuffle algebras have been well understood for some time now, quasi-shuffle algebras were only formally studied relatively recently. In particular, Hoffman gives a thorough discussion of the algebraic structure, including a choice of algebra basis, and applies his results to produce families of relations among multiple zeta values and their generalisations. In a recent preprint, Hirose and Sato establish a family of relations coming from a new generalised shuffle structure, lifting a set of graded relations established by the author to genuine ungraded relations. In this paper, we define a commutative algebra structure on the space of non-commutative polynomials in a countable alphabet, generalising the shuffle-like structure of Hirose and Sato. We show that, over the rational numbers, this generalised quasi-shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the standard shuffle algebra, allowing us to reproduce most of Hoffman's results on quasi-shuffle algebras. We then apply these results to the case of multiple zeta values, reproducing several known families of results and establishing several more.
On Generators and Relations of the Rational Cohomology of Hilbert Schemes
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 57 (2023), 829-857 • View PublicationBIB
We consider for $d\geq 1$ the graded commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra $\mathcal{A}(d):=H^*(\operatorname{Hilb}^d(\mathbb{C}^2);\mathbb{Q})$, which is also connected to the study of generalised Hurwitz spaces by work of the first author. These Hurwitz spaces are in turn related to the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with boundary. We determine two distinct, minimal sets of $\lfloor d/2\rfloor$ multiplicative generators of $\mathcal{A}(d)$. Additionally, we prove when the lowest degree generating relations occur. For small values of $d$ we also determine a minimal set of generating relations, which leads to several conjectures about the necessary generating relations for $\mathcal{A}(d)$.

On some modules supported in the Chow variety
Published in Vietnam J. Math. 50 (2022), Special issue celebrating the 60th birthday of Bernd Sturmfels, 501-521 • View PublicationBIB
The study of Chow varieties of decomposable forms lies at the confluence of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory and combinatorics. There are many open questions about homological properties of Chow varieties and interesting classes of modules supported on them. The goal of this note is to survey some fundamental constructions and properties of these objects, and to propose some new directions of research. Our main focus will be on the study of certain maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants supported on Chow varieties, and on defining equations and syzygies. We also explain how to assemble Tor groups over Veronese subalgebras into modules over a Chow variety, leading to a result on the polynomial growth of these groups.
