The set of morphisms mapping any Sturmian sequence to a Sturmian sequence forms together with composition the so-called monoid of Sturm. For this monoid, we defne a faithful representation by $(3\times 3)$-matrices with integer entries. We find three convex cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and show that a matrix $R \in Sl(\mathbb{Z},3)$ is a matrix representing a Sturmian morphism if the three cones are invariant under multiplication by $R$ or $R^{-1}$. This property offers a new tool to study Sturmian sequences. We provide alternative proofs of four known results on Sturmian sequences fixed by a primitive morphism and a new result concerning the square root of a Sturmian sequence.
The expected degree of noninvertibility of compositions of functions and a related combinatorial identity
Recently, Defant and Propp [2020] defined the degree of noninvertibility of a function $f\colon X\to Y$ between two finite nonempty sets by $\text{deg}(f)=\frac{1}{|X|}\sum_{x\in X}|f^{-1}(f(x))|$. We obtain an exact formula for the expected degree of noninvertibility of the composition of $t$ functions for every $t\in \mathbb{N}$. An equivalent formulation for the definition of the degree of noninvertibility is then the starting point for a generalization yielding a seemingly new combinatorial identity involving the Stirling transform of the signed Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Let $d_S$ denote the arithmetic density of a subset $S \subseteq \mathbb N$. We derive a power series in $q\in \mathbb C$, $|q|<1$, with coëfficients related to integer partitions and integer compositions, that yields $1/d_S$ in the limit as $q\to 1$ radially.

Gessel's fundamental and Stembridge's peak functions are the generating functions for (enriched) $P$-partitions on labelled chains. They are also the bases of two significant subalgebras of formal power series, respectively the ring of quasisymmetric functions (QSym) and the algebra of peaks. Hsiao introduced the monomial peak functions, a basis of the algebra of peaks indexed by odd integer compositions whose relation to peak functions mimics the one between the monomial and fundamental bases of QSym. We show that the extension of monomial peaks to any composition is a new basis of QSym and generalise Hsiao's results including the product rule. To this end we introduce a weighted variant of posets and study their generating functions.
A proof of the Kotzig-Ringel-Rosa Conjecture
In graph theory, a graceful labeling of a graph with m edges is a labeling of its vertices with a subset of the integers ranging from 0 to m inclusive, such that no two vertices share a label, and each edge is uniquely identified by the absolute difference of labels assigned to its endpoints. The Kotzig-Ringel-Rosa conjecture asserts that every tree admits a graceful labeling. We provide a proof of this long standing conjecture via a functional reformulation of the conjecture and a composition lemma.
The Bruhat Order on Symmetric Groups via Intrinsic Coverings of Compositions
Lehmer's code defines a bijection between the symmetric group and the set of staircase compositions. In this paper, we characterize a poset structure on these compositions that is equivalent to the strong Bruhat order on the symmetric group. This construction is intrinsic and does not require any reference to the associated permutations.

Let $n$ be a nonnegative integer. For each composition $α$ of $n$, Berg $\textit{et al.}$ introduced a cyclic indecomposable $H_n(0)$-module $\mathcal{V}_α$ with a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function as the image of the quasisymmetric characteristic. In this paper, we study $\mathcal{V}_α$'s from the homological viewpoint. To be precise, we construct a minimal projective presentation of $\mathcal{V}_α$ and a minimal injective presentation of $\mathcal{V}_α$ as well. Using them, we compute ${\rm Ext}^1_{H_n(0)}(\mathcal{V}_α, {\bf F}_β)$ and ${\rm Ext}^1_{H_n(0)}( {\bf F}_β, \mathcal{V}_α)$, where ${\bf F}_β$ is the simple $H_n(0)$-module attached to a composition $β$ of $n$. We also compute ${\rm Ext}_{H_n(0)}^i(\mathcal{V}_α,\mathcal{V}_β)$ when $i=0,1$ and $β\le_l α$, where $\le_l$ represents the lexicographic order on compositions.
Causal-net category
A causal-net is a finite acyclic directed graph. In this paper, we introduce a category, denoted by $\mathbf{Cau}$ and called causal-net category, whose objects are causal-nets and morphisms between two causal-nets are the functors between their path categories. The category $\mathbf{Cau}$ is in fact the Kleisli category of the "free category on a causal-net" monad. Firstly, we motivate the study of $\mathbf{Cau}$ and illustrate its application in the framework of causal-net condensation. We show that there are exactly six types of indecomposable morphisms, which correspond to six conventions of graphical calculi for monoidal categories. Secondly, we study several composition-closed classes of morphisms in $\mathbf{Cau}$, which characterize interesting partial orders among causal-nets, such as coarse-graining, merging, contraction, immersion-minor, topological minor, etc., and prove several useful decomposition theorems. Thirdly, we introduce a categorical framework for minor theory and use it to study several types of generalized minors in $\mathbf{Cau}$. In addition, we prove a fundamental theorem that any morphism in $\mathbf{Cau}$ is a composition of the six types of indecomposable morphisms, and show that the notions of coloring and exact minor can be understood as special kinds of minimal-quotient and sub-quotient in $\mathbf{Cau}$, respectively. Base on these results, we conclude that $\mathbf{Cau}$ is a natural setting for studying causal-nets, and the theory of $\mathbf{Cau}$ should shed new light on the category-theoretic understanding of graph theory.
Partial rank symmetry of distributive lattices for fences

Associated with any composition beta=(a,b,...) is a corresponding fence poset F(beta) whose covering relations are
x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... The distributive lattice L(beta) of all lower order ideals of F(beta) is important in the theory of cluster algebras. In addition, its rank generating function r(q;beta) is used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. Oguz and Ravichandran recently showed that its coefficients satisfy an interlacing condition, proving a conjecture of McConville, Smyth and Sagan, which in turn implies a previous conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that r(q;beta) is unimodal. We show that, when beta has an odd number of parts, then the polynomial is also partially symmetric: the number of ideals of F(beta) of size k equals the number of filters of size k, when k is below a certain value. Our proof is completely bijective. Oguz and Ravichandran also introduced a circular version of fences and proved, using algebraic techniques, that the distributive lattice for such a poset is rank symmetric. We give a bijective proof of this result as well. We end with some questions and conjectures raised by this work.

We present a quite curious generalization of multi-step Fibonacci numbers. For any positive rational $q$, we enumerate binary words of length $n$ whose maximal factors of the form $0^a1^b$ satisfy $a = 0$ or $aq > b$. When $q$ is an integer we rediscover classical multi-step Fibonacci numbers: Fibonacci, Tribonacci, Tetranacci, etc. When $q$ is not an integer, obtained recurrence relations are connected to certain restricted integer compositions. We also discuss Gray codes for these words, and a possibly novel generalization of the golden ratio.
How to Construct the Lattice of Submodules of a Multiplicity free Module from Partial Information
In general it is a difficult problem to construct the lattice of submodules $L(M)$ of a given module $M$. In \cite{St} R. P. Stanley outlined a method for constucting a distributive lattice from a knowledge of its join irreducibles. However it is not an easy task to identify all join irreducible submodules of a given module. In the case of a multiplicity free module $M$ we present a modifiiction of Stanley's method based on the composition factors of $M$. As input we require a set of submodules $A_1,\ldots , A_n$ whose submodule lattices are known and which contain all composition factors of $M$. From this we can reconstruct $L(M)$. We illustrate the process for a family of Verma modules $M(\gl_n)$, with $n $ a positive integer, for the Lie superalgebra $\osp(3,2)$. We show that for $n\ge 2$, $L(M(\gl_n))$ is isomorphic to the (extended) free distributive lattice of rank 3.
Spaces of polynomials with constrained real divisors, II. (Co)homology & stabilization
In the late 80s, V.~Arnold and V.~Vassiliev initiated the topological study of the space of real univariate polynomials of a given degree which have no real roots of multiplicity exceeding a given positive integer. Expanding their studies, we consider the spaces P^{cΘ}_d of real monic univariate polynomials of degree d whose real divisors avoid given sequences of root multiplicities. These forbidden sequences are taken from an arbitrary poset Θof compositions that are closed under certain natural combinatorial operations. We reduce the computation of the homology H_*(P^{cΘ}_d) to the computation of the homology of a differential complex, defined purely combinatorially in terms of the given closed poset Θ. We also obtain the stabilization results about H^\ast(P^{c Θ}_d), as d goes to infinity.
These results are deduced from our description of the homology of spaces B^{c Θ}_d whose points are binary real homogeneous forms, considered up to projective equivalence, with similarly Θ-constrained real divisors. In particular, we exhibit differential complexes that calculate the homology of these spaces and obtain some stabilization results for H^*(B^{c Θ}_d), as d goes to infinity. In particular, we compute the homology of the discriminants of projectivized binary real forms for which there is at least one line on which the form vanishes with multiplicity >= 2 and of their complements in \cB_d \cong RP^d.

Let $G$ be a reductive group satisfying the standard hypotheses, with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}_0$ in a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{g}_0$ we can consider the induced orbit $\mathcal{O}$ defined by Lusztig and Spaltenstein. We observe that there is a natural closed morphism of relative dimension zero from the Springer fibre over a point of $\mathcal{O}_0$ to the Springer fibre over $\mathcal{O}$, which induces an injection on the level of irreducible components. When $G = \operatorname{GL}_N$ the components of Springer fibres was classified by Spaltenstein using standard tableaux. Our main results explains how the Lusztig--Spaltenstein map of Springer fibres can be described combinatorially, using a new associative composition rule for standard tableaux which we call stacking.
Combinatorics of Centers of 0-Hecke Algebras in Type A
A basis of the center of the 0-Hecke algebra of an arbitrary finite Coxeter group was described by He in 2015. This basis is indexed by certain equivalence classes of the Coxeter group whose explicit description is rather complicated. Even their number is not obvious.
We consider case of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Building on work of Geck, Kim and Pfeiffer, we obtain a complete set of representatives of the equivalence classes. This set is naturally parametrized by certain compositions of $n$ called maximal. It follows that the maximal compositions of $n$ index the basis of the center of the 0-Hecke algebra of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We then develop an explicit combinatorial description for the equivalence classes that are parametrized by the maximal compositions whose odd parts form a hook.

Let $D$ be a digraph and let $λ(D)$ denote the number of vertices in a longest path of $D$. For a pair of vertex-disjoint induced subdigraphs $A$ and $B$ of $D$, we say that $(A,B)$ is a partition of $D$ if $V(A)\cup V(B)=V(D).$ The Path Partition Conjecture (PPC) states that for every digraph, $D$, and every integer $q$ with $1\leq q\leqλ(D)-1$, there exists a partition $(A,B)$ of $D$ such that $λ(A)\leq q$ and $λ(B)\leqλ(D)-q.$ Let $T$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_1,\dots, u_t\}$ and for every $i\in [t]$, let $H_i$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\,
j_i\in [n_i]\}$. The {\em composition} $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ of $T$ and $H_1,\ldots, H_t$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, i\in [t], j_i\in [n_i]\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{i,j_i}u_{p,q_p}\colon\, u_iu_p\in A(T), j_i\in [n_i], q_p\in [n_p]\}.$$ We say that $Q$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)} if $T$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)}. In this paper, we introduce a conjecture stronger than PPC using a property first studied by Bang-Jensen, Nielsen and Yeo (2006) and show that the stronger conjecture holds for wide families of acyclic and semicomplete compositions.

In this paper, we study the Wilf-type equivalence relations among multiset permutations. We identify all multiset equivalences among pairs of patterns consisting of a pattern of length three and another pattern of length at most four. To establish our results, we make use of a variety of techniques, including Ferrers-equivalence arguments, sorting by minimal/maximal letters, analysis of active sites and direct bijections. In several cases, our arguments may be extended to prove multiset equivalences for infinite families of pattern pairs. Our results apply equally well to the Wilf-type classification of compositions, and as a consequence, we obtain a complete description of the Wilf-equivalence classes for pairs of patterns of type (3,3) and (3,4) on compositions, with the possible exception of two classes of type (3,4).

Let $m(G)$ be the infimum of the volumes of all open subgroups of a unimodular locally compact group $G$. Suppose integrable functions $φ_1 , φ_2 \colon G \to [0,1]$ satisfy $\| φ_1 \| \leq \| φ_2 \|$ and $\| φ_1 \| + \| φ_2 \| \leq m (G)$, where $\| \cdot \|$ denotes the $L^1$-norm with respect to a Haar measure $dg$ on $G$. We have the following inequality for any convex function $f \colon [0, \| φ_1 \| ] \to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(0) = 0$: \begin{align*} \int_{G}^{} f \circ ( φ_1 * φ_2 ) (g) dg \leq 2 \int_{0}^{\| φ_1 \|} f(y) dy + ( \| φ_2 \| - \| φ_1 \| ) f( \| φ_1 \| ). \end{align*} As a corollary, we have a slightly stronger version of Brunn-Minkowski-Kemperman inequality. That is, we have \begin{align*} \mathrm{vol}_* ( B_1 B_2 ) \geq \mathrm{vol} ( \{ g \in G \mid 1_{B_1} * 1_{B_2} (g) > 0 \} ) \geq \mathrm{vol} (B_1) + \mathrm{vol} (B_2) \end{align*} for any non-null measurable sets $B_1 , B_2 \subset G$ with $\mathrm{vol} (B_1) + \mathrm{vol} (B_2) \leq m(G)$, where $\mathrm{vol}_*$ denotes the inner measure and $1_B$ the characteristic function of $B$.

In Sternfeld's work on Kolmogorov's Superposition Theorem appeared the combinatorial-geometric notion of a basic set and a certain kind of arrays.
A subset $X \subset \mathbb R^n$ is basic if any continuous function $X\to \mathbb R$ could be represented as the sum of compositions of continuous functions $\mathbb R\to \mathbb R$ and projections to the coordinate axes.
The definition of a Sternfeld array will be presented in the paper.
Sternfeld's Arrays Theorem. If a closed bounded subset $X \subset \mathbb R^{2n}$ contains Sternfeld arrays of arbitrary large size then $X$ is not basic.
The paper provides a simpler proof of this theorem.
