Permutonestohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
There are several real spherical models associated with a root arrangement, depending on the choice of a building set. The connected components of these models are manifolds with corners which can be glued together to obtain the corresponding real De Concini-Procesi models. In this paper, starting from any root system Phi with finite Coxeter group W and any W-invariant building set, we describe an explicit realization of the real spherical model as a union of polytopes (nestohedra) which lie inside the chambers of the arrangement. The main point of this realization is that the convex hull of these nestohedra is a larger polytope, a permutonestohedron, equipped with an action of W or also, depending on the building set, of Aut(Phi). The permutonestohedra are natural generalizations of Kapranov's permutoassociahedra.

Subword complexes and edge subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite Coxeter group, a subword complex is a simplicial complex associated with a pair (Q, π), where Q is a word in the alphabet of simple reflections, $π$ is a group element. We discuss the transformations of such a complex induced by braid moves of the word Q. We show that under certain conditions, this transformation is a composition of edge subdivisions and inverse edge subdivisions. In such a case, we describe how the H- and the γ-polynomials change under this operation. This case includes all braid moves for groups with simply-laced Coxeter diagrams.

Relation spaces of hyperplane arrangements and modules defined by graphs of fiber zonotopes
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 201 (2014) 901-947 • View PublicationBIB
We study the exactness of certain combinatorially defined complexes which generalize the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a geometric lattice. The main results pertain to complex reflection arrangements and their restrictions. In particular, we consider the corresponding relation complexes and give a simple proof of the $n$-formality of these hyperplane arrangements. As an application, we are able to bound the Castelnouvo-Mumford regularity of certain modules over polynomial rings associated to Coxeter arrangements (real reflection arrangements) and their restrictions. The modules in question are defined using the relation complex of the Coxeter arrangement and fiber polytopes of the dual Coxeter zonotope. They generalize the algebra of piecewise polynomial functions on the original arrangement.
Generalized frieze pattern determinants and higher angulations of polygons
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 123 (2014), pp. 30-42 • View PublicationBIB
Frieze patterns (in the sense of Conway and Coxeter) are in close connection to triangulations of polygons. Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have assigned a symmetric matrix to each polygon triangulation and computed the determinant. In this paper we consider d-angulations of polygons and generalize the combinatorial algorithm for computing the entries in the associated symmetric matrices; we compute their determinants and the Smith normal forms. It turns out that both are independent of the particular d-angulation, the determinant is a power of d-1, and the elementary divisors only take values d-1 and 1. We also show that in the generalized frieze patterns obtained in our setting every adjacent 2x2-determinant is 0 or 1, and we give a combinatorial criterion for when they are 1, which in the case d=3 gives back the Conway-Coxeter condition on frieze patterns.

On $γ$-vectors and the derivatives of the tangent and secant functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the gamma-vectors of the types A and B Coxeter complexes as well as the gamma-vectors of the types A and B associahedrons. We show that these gamma-vectors can be obtained by using derivative polynomials of the tangent and secant functions. A grammatical description for these gamma-vectors is discussed. Moreover, we also present a grammatical description for the well known Legendre polynomials and Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds.

Leading Coefficients of Kazhdan--Lusztig Polynomials in Type $D$
Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials arise in the context of Hecke algebras associated to Coxeter groups. The computation of these polynomials is very difficult for examples of even moderate rank. In type $A$ it is known that the leading coefficient, $μ(x,w)$ of a Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial $P_{x,w}$ is either 0 or 1 when $x$ is fully commutative and $w$ is arbitrary. In type $D$ Coxeter groups there are certain "bad" elements that make $μ$-value computation difficult. The Robinson--Schensted correspondence between the symmetric group and pairs of standard Young tableaux gives rise to a way to compute cells of Coxeter groups of type $A$. A lesser known correspondence exists for signed permutations and pairs of so-called domino tableaux, which allows us to compute cells in Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$. I will use this correspondence in type $D$ to compute $μ$-values involving bad elements. I will conclude by showing that $μ(x,w)$ is 0 or 1 when $x$ is fully commutative in type $D$.
Hypercontractivity in group von Neumann algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we provide a combinatorial/numerical method to establish new hypercontractivity estimates in group von Neumann algebras. We will illustrate our method with free groups, triangular groups and finite cyclic groups, for which we shall obtain optimal time hypercontractive $L_2 \to L_q$ inequalities with respect to the Markov process given by the word length and with $q$ an even integer. Interpolation and differentiation also yield general $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontrativity for $1 < p \le q < \infty$ via logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our method admits further applications to other discrete groups without small loops as far as the numerical part ---which varies from one group to another--- is implemented and tested in a computer. We also develop another combinatorial method which does not rely on computational estimates and provides (non-optimal) $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontractive inequalities for a larger class of groups/lengths, including any finitely generated group equipped with a conditionally negative word length, like infinite Coxeter groups. Our second method also yields hypercontractivity bounds for groups admitting a finite dimensional proper cocycle. Hypercontractivity fails for conditionally negative lengths in groups satisfying Kazhdan property (T).

A generalization of Euler numbers to finite Coxeter groups
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19(2) (2015), 325--336 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that Euler numbers, defined as the Taylor coefficients of the tangent and secant functions, count alternating permutations in the symmetric group. Springer defined a generalization of these numbers for each finite Coxeter group by considering the largest descent class, and computed the value in each case of the classification. We consider here another generalization of Euler numbers for finite Coxeter groups, building on Stanley's result about the number of orbits of maximal chains of set partitions. We present a method to compute these integers and obtain the value in each case of the classification.

Bruhat and balanced graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize chain enumeration in graded partially ordered sets by relaxing the graded, poset and Eulerian requirements. The resulting balanced digraphs, which include the classical Eulerian posets having an $R$-labeling, imply the existence of the (non-homogeneous) ${\bf cd}$-index, a key invariant for studying inequalities for the flag vector of polytopes. Mirroring Alexander duality for Eulerian posets, we show an analogue of Alexander duality for balanced digraphs. For Bruhat graphs of Coxeter groups, an important family of balanced graphs, our theory gives elementary proofs of the existence of the complete ${\bf cd}$-index and its properties. We also introduce the rising and falling quasisymmetric functions of a labeled acyclic digraph and show they are Hopf algebra homomorphisms mapping balanced digraphs to the Stembridge peak algebra. We conjecture nonnegativity of the ${\bf cd}$-index for acyclic digraphs having a balanced linear edge labeling.
Weighted Coxeter graphs and generalized geometric representations of Coxeter Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of weighted Coxeter graph and associate to it a certain generalization of the standard geometric representation of a Coxeter group. We prove sufficient conditions for faithfulness and non-faithfulness of such a representation. In the case when the weighted Coxeter graph is balanced we discuss how the generalized geometric representation is related to the numbers game played on the Coxeter graph.
Combinatorial Proof of the Inversion Formula on the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be a Coxeter group, and for $u,v\in W$, let $R_{u,v}(q)$ be the Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof of the inversion formula on $R$-polynomials due to Kazhdan and Lusztig. This problem was raised by Brenti. Based on Dyer's combinatorial interpretation of the $R$-polynomials in terms of increasing Bruhat paths, we reformulate the inversion formula in terms of $V$-paths. By a $V$-path from $u$ to $v$ with bottom $w$ we mean a pair $(Δ_1,Δ_2)$ of Bruhat paths such that $Δ_1$ is a decreasing path from $u$ to $w$ and $Δ_2$ is an increasing path from $w$ to $v$. We find a reflection principle on $V$-paths, which leads to a combinatorial proof of the inversion formula. Moreover, we give two applications of the reflection principle. First, we restrict this involution to $V$-paths from $u$ to $v$ with maximal length. This provides a direct interpretation for the equi-distribution property that any nontrivial interval $[u,v]$ has as many elements of even length as elements of odd length. This property was obtained by Verma in his derivation of the Möbius function of the Bruhat order. Second, using the reflection principle for the symmetric group, we obtain a refinement of the inversion formula by restricting the summation to permutations ending with a given element.

Imaginary cones and limit roots of infinite Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let (W,S) be an infinite Coxeter system. To each geometric representation of W is associated a root system. While a root system lives in the positive side of the isotropy cone of its associated bilinear form, an imaginary cone lives in the negative side of the isotropic cone. Precisely on the isotropic cone, between root systems and imaginary cones, lives the set E of limit points of the directions of roots (see arXiv:1112.5415). In this article we study the close relations of the imaginary cone (see arXiv:1210.5206) with the set E, which leads to new fundamental results about the structure of geometric representations of infinite Coxeter groups. In particular, we show that the W-action on E is minimal and faithful, and that E and the imaginary cone can be approximated arbitrarily well by sets of limit roots and imaginary cones of universal root subsystems of W, i.e., root systems for Coxeter groups without braid relations (the free object for Coxeter groups). Finally, we discuss open questions as well as the possible relevance of our framework in other areas such as geometric group theory.

Non-uniqueness phase of Bernoulli percolation on reflection groups for some polyhedra in H^3
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper I consider Cayley graphs of reflection groups of finite-sided Coxeter polyhedra in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space H^3, with standard sets of generators. As the main result, I prove the existence of non-trivial non-uniqueness phase of bond and site Bernoulli percolation on such graphs, i.e. that p_c < p_u, for two classes of such polyhedra: * for any k-hedra as above with k at least 13; * for any compact right-angled polyhedra as above. I also establish a natural lower bound for the growth rate of such Cayley graphs (when the number of faces of the polyhedron is at least 6; see thm. 5.2) and an upper bound for the growth rate of the sequence (#{simple cycles of length n through o})_n for a regular graph of degree at least 2 with a distinguished vertex o, depending on its spectral radius (see thm. 5.1 and rem. 2.3), both used to prove the main result.

A new statistic on the hyperoctahedral groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new statistic on the hyperoctahedral groups (Coxeter groups of type B), and give a conjectural formula for its signed distributions over arbitrary descent classes. The statistic is analogous to the classical Coxeter length function, and features a parity condition. For descent classes which are singletons the conjectured formula gives the Poincaré polynomials of the varieties of symmetric matrices of fixed rank. For several descent classes we prove the conjectural formula. For this we construct suitable "supporting sets" for the relevant generating functions. We prove cancellations on the complements of these supporting sets using suitably defined sign reversing involutions.

Conjugacy of Coxeter elements
Published in Electr. J. Combinatorics 16(2), 9p, 2009 • Search Publication
For a Coxeter group (W,S), a permutation of the set S is called a Coxeter word and the group element represented by the product is called a Coxeter element. Moving the first letter to the end of the word is called a rotation and two Coxeter elements are rotation equivalent if their words can be transformed into each other through a sequence of rotations and legal commutations. We prove that Coxeter elements are conjugate if and only if they are rotation equivalent. This was known for some special cases but not for Coxeter groups in general.

Infinite reduced words and the Tits boundary of a Coxeter group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let (W,S) be a finite rank Coxeter system with W infinite. We prove that the limit weak order on the blocks of infinite reduced words of W is encoded by the topology of the Tits boundary of the Davis complex X of W. We consider many special cases, including W word hyperbolic, and X with isolated flats. We establish that when W is word hyperbolic, the limit weak order is the disjoint union of weak orders of finite Coxeter groups. We also establish, for each boundary point ξ, a natural order-preserving correspondence between infinite reduced words which "point towards" ξ, and elements of the reflection subgroup of W which fixes ξ.
Distribution of accumulation points of roots for type $(n-1,1)$ Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the set of accumulation points of normalized roots of infinite Coxeter groups for certain class of their action. Concretely, we prove the conjecture proposed in [6, Section 3.2] in the case where the equipped Coxeter matrices are of type $(n-1,1)$, where $n$ is the rank. Moreover, we obtain that the set of such accumulation points coincides with the closure of the orbit of one point of normalized limit roots. In addition, in order to prove our main results, we also investigate some properties on fixed points of the action.

Bijective Projections on Parabolic Quotients of Affine Weyl Groups
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 41, no. 4, p. 911-948, 2015 • Search Publication
Affine Weyl groups and their parabolic quotients are used extensively as indexing sets for objects in combinatorics, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and number theory. Moreover, in the classical Lie types we can conveniently realize the elements of these quotients via intuitive geometric and combinatorial models such as abaci, alcoves, coroot lattice points, core partitions, and bounded partitions. Berg, Jones, and Vazirani described a bijection between n-cores with first part equal to k and (n-1)-cores with first part less than or equal to k, and they interpret this bijection in terms of these other combinatorial models for the quotient of the affine symmetric group by the finite symmetric group. In this paper we discuss how to generalize the bijection of Berg-Jones-Vazirani to parabolic quotients of affine Weyl groups in type C. We develop techniques using the associated affine hyperplane arrangement to interpret this bijection geometrically as a projection of alcoves onto the hyperplane containing their coroot lattice points. We are thereby able to analyze this bijective projection in the language of various additional combinatorial models developed by Hanusa and Jones, such as abaci, core partitions, and canonical reduced expressions in the Coxeter group.

Inequalities on Bruhat graphs, R- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Series A 120 (2013) no.2, 470--482 • View PublicationBIB
From a combinatorial perspective, we establish three inequalities on coefficients of $R$- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for crystallographic Coxeter groups: (1) Nonnegativity of $(q-1)$-coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (2) a new criterion of rational singularities of Bruhat intervals by sum of quadratic coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (3) existence of a certain strict inequality (coefficientwise) of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our main idea is to understand Deodhar's inequality in a connection with a sum of $R$-polynomials and edges of Bruhat graphs.
