Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials of generalized Temperley Lieb algebras
We study two families of polynomials that play the same role, in the generalized Temperley Lieb algebra of a Coxeter group, as the Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials in the Hecke algebra of the group. Our results include recursions, closed formulas, and other combinatorial properties for these polynomials. We focus mainly on non branching Coxeter graphs.

Rationally smooth Schubert varieties and inversion hyperplane arrangements
Published in Advances in Math., v. 285, 2015, 709-736 • View PublicationBIB
We show that an element $w$ of a finite Weyl group $W$ is rationally smooth if and only if the hyperplane arrangement $I$ associated to the inversion set of $w$ is inductively free, and the product $(d_1+1) \cdots (d_l+1)$ of the coexponents $d_1,\ldots,d_l$ is equal to the size of the Bruhat interval $[e,w]$, where $e$ is the identity in $W$. As part of the proof, we describe exactly when a rationally smooth element in a finite Weyl group has a chain Billey-Postnikov decomposition. For finite Coxeter groups, we show that chain Billey-Postnikov decompositions are connected with certain modular coatoms of $I$.
Thickness, relative hyperbolicity, and randomness in Coxeter groups
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 17 (2017) 705-740 • View PublicationBIB
For right-angled Coxeter groups $W_Γ$, we obtain a condition on $Γ$ that is necessary and sufficient to ensure that $W_Γ$ is thick and thus not relatively hyperbolic. We show that Coxeter groups which are not thick all admit canonical minimal relatively hyperbolic structures; further, we show that in such a structure, the peripheral subgroups are both parabolic (in the Coxeter group-theoretic sense) and strongly algebraically thick. We exhibit a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether a right-angled Coxeter group is thick or relatively hyperbolic. We analyze random graphs in the Erdós-Rényi model and establish the asymptotic probability that a random right-angled Coxeter group is thick. In the joint appendix we study Coxeter groups in full generality and there we also obtain a dichotomy whereby any such group is either strongly algebraically thick or admits a minimal relatively hyperbolic structure. In this study, we also introduce a notion we call \emph{intrinsic horosphericity} which provides a dynamical obstruction to relative hyperbolicity which generalizes thickness.

Structural Properties of the Cambrian Semilattices -- Consequences of Semidistributivity
The $γ$-Cambrian semilattices $\mathcal{C}_γ$ defined by Reading and Speyer are a family of meet-semilattices associated with a Coxeter group $W$ and a Coxeter element $γ\in W$, and they are lattices if and only if $W$ is finite. In the case where $W$ is the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ and $γ$ is the long cycle $(1\;2\;\ldots\;n)$ the corresponding $γ$-Cambrian lattice is isomorphic to the well-known Tamari lattice $\mathcal{T}_{n}$. Recently, Kallipoliti and the author have investigated $\mathcal{C}_γ$ from a topological viewpoint, and showed that many properties of the Tamari lattices can be generalized nicely. In the present article this investigation is continued on a structural level using the observation of Reading and Speyer that $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is semidistributive. First we prove that every closed interval of $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is a bounded-homomorphic image of a free lattice (in fact it is a so-called $\mathcal{H\!H}$-lattice). Subsequently we prove that each closed interval of $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is trim, we determine its breadth, and we characterize the closed intervals that are dismantlable.

Chen ranks and resonance
Published in Adv. Math. 285 (2015), 1-27 • View PublicationBIB
The Chen groups of a group $G$ are the lower central series quotients of the maximal metabelian quotient of $G$. Under certain conditions, we relate the ranks of the Chen groups to the first resonance variety of $G$, a jump locus for the cohomology of $G$. In the case where $G$ is the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, our results positively resolve Suciu's Chen ranks conjecture. We obtain explicit formulas for the Chen ranks of a number of groups of broad interest, including pure Artin groups associated to Coxeter groups, and the group of basis-conjugating automorphisms of a finitely generated free group.
Signed Mahonian polynomials for major and sorting indices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive some new signed Mahonian polynomials over the complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)=C_r\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$, where the "sign" is taken to be any of the $2r$ $1$-dim characters and the "Mahonian" statistics are the $\mathsf{lmaj}$ defined by Bagno and the $\mathsf{sor}$ defined by Eu et al. Various new signed Mahonian polynomials over Coxeter groups of types $B_n$ and $D_n$ are derived as well. We also investigate the signed counting polynomials on $G(r,1,n)$ for those statistics with the distribution $[r]_q[2r]_q\cdots [nr]_q$.

Subword complexes and nil-Hecke moves
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite Coxeter group W, a subword complex is a simplicial complex associated with a pair (Q, ρ), where Q is a word in the alphabet of simple reflections, ρis a group element. We describe the transformations of such a complex induced by nil-moves and inverse operations on Q in the nil-Hecke monoid corresponding to W. If the complex is polytopal, we also describe such transformations for the dual polytope. For W simply-laced, these descriptions and results of \cite{Go} provide an algorithm for the construction of the subword complex corresponding to (Q, ρ) from the one corresponding to (δ(Q), ρ), for any sequence of elementary moves reducing the word Q to its Demazure product δ(Q). The former complex is spherical if and only if the latter one is the (-1)-sphere.

Lorentzian Coxeter systems and Boyd-Maxwell ball packings
Published in Geometriae Dedicata: Volume 174, Issue 1 (2015), Page 43-73 • View PublicationBIB
In the recent study of infinite root systems, fractal patterns of ball packings were observed while visualizing roots in affine space. In this paper, we show that the observed fractals are exactly the ball packings described by Boyd and Maxwell. This correspondence is a corollary of a more fundamental result: Given a geometric representation of a Coxeter group in a Lorentz space, the set of limit directions of weights equals the set of limit roots. Additionally, we use Coxeter complexes to describe tangency graphs of the corresponding Boyd--Maxwell ball packings. Finally, we enumerate all the Coxeter systems that generate Boyd-Maxwell ball packings.

Symmetry Groups of $A_n$ Hypergeometric Series
Published in SIGMA 10 (2014), 026, 29 pages • View PublicationBIB
Structures of symmetries of transformations for Holman-Biedenharn-Louck $A_n$ hypergeometric series: $A_n$ terminating balanced ${}_4 F_3$ series and $A_n$ elliptic ${}_{10} E_9$ series are discussed. Namely the description of the invariance groups and the classification all of possible transformations for each types of $A_n$ hypergeometric series are given. Among them, a "periodic" affine Coxeter group which seems to be new in the literature arises as an invariance group for a class of $A_n$ ${}_4 F_3$ series.

Q-Systems, Factorization Dynamics, and the Twist Automorphism
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a concrete realization of the cluster algebras associated with Q-systems as amalgamations of cluster structures on double Bruhat cells in simple algebraic groups. For nonsimply-laced groups, this provides a cluster-algebraic formulation of Q-systems of twisted type. It also yields a uniform proof of the discrete integrability of these Q-systems by identifying them with the dynamics of factorization mappings on quotients of double Bruhat cells. On the double Bruhat cell itself, we find these dynamics are closely related to those of the Fomin-Zelevinsky twist map. This leads to an explicit formula expressing twisted cluster variables as Laurent monomials in the untwisted cluster variables obtained from the corresponding mutation sequence. This holds for Coxeter double Bruhat cells in any symmetrizable Kac-Moody group, and we show that in affine type the analogous factorization mapping is also integrable.

Systolizing buildings

We introduce a construction turning some Coxeter and Davis realizations of buildings into systolic complexes. Consequently groups acting geometrically on buildings of triangle types distinct from $(2,4,4)$, $(2,4,5)$, $(2,5,5)$, and various rank $4$ types are systolic.

Subalgebras of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$ is a noncommutative quadratic algebra with a generator for every edge of the complete graph on $n$ vertices. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, we define $\mathcal E_G$ to be the subalgebra of $\mathcal E_n$ generated by the edges of $G$. We show that these algebras have many parallels with Coxeter groups and their nil-Coxeter algebras: for instance, $\mathcal E_G$ is a free $\mathcal E_H$-module for any $H\subseteq G$, and if $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional, then its Hilbert series has symmetric coefficients. We determine explicit monomial bases and Hilbert series for $\mathcal E_G$ when $G$ is a simply-laced finite Dynkin diagram or a cycle, in particular showing that $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional in these cases. We also present conjectures for the Hilbert series of $\mathcal E_{\tilde{D}_n}$, $\mathcal E_{\tilde{E}_6}$, and $\mathcal E_{\tilde{E}_7}$, as well as for which graphs $G$ on six vertices $\mathcal E_G$ is finite-dimensional.

A categorification of non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.

Combinatorial properties of Temperley Lieb algebras

We consider two families of polynomials that play the same role in the Temperley Lieb algebra of a Coxeter group as the Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials play in the Hecke algebra of the group. We study these polynomials from a combinatorial point of view. More precisely we obtain recursions, non recursive formulas, symmetry properties, and expressions for the constant terms, of these polynomials.

Towards m-Cambrian Lattices
For positive integers $m$ and $k$, we introduce a family of lattices $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}$ associated to the Cambrian lattice $\mathcal{C}_{k}$ of the dihedral group $I_{2}(k)$. We show that $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}$ satisfies some basic properties of a Fuss-Catalan generalization of $\mathcal{C}_{k}$, namely that $\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(1)}=\mathcal{C}_{k}$ and $\bigl\lvert\mathcal{C}_{k}^{(m)}\bigr\rvert=\mbox{Cat}^{(m)}\bigl(I_{2}(k)\bigr)$. Subsequently, we prove some structural and topological properties of these lattices---namely that they are trim and EL-shellable---which were known for $\mathcal{C}_{k}$ before. Remarkably, our construction coincides in the case $k=3$ with the $m$-Tamari lattice of parameter 3 due to Bergeron and Pr{é}ville-Ratelle. Eventually, we investigate this construction in the context of other Coxeter groups, in particular we conjecture that the lattice completion of the analogous construction for the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ and the long cycle $(1\;2\;\ldots\;n)$ is isomorphic to the $m$-Tamari lattice of parameter $n$.

A generalisation of core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $s$ and $t$ are coprime natural numbers. A theorem of Olsson says that the $t$-core of an $s$-core partition is again an $s$-core. We generalise this theorem, showing that the $s$-weight of the $t$-core of a partition $λ$ is at most the $s$-weight of $λ$. Then we consider the set $\mathcal C_{s:t}$ of partitions for which equality holds, which we call $[s{:}t]$-cores; this set has interesting structure, and we expect that it will be the subject of future study. We show that the set of $[s{:}t]$-cores is a union of finitely many orbits for an action of a Coxeter group of type $\tilde A_{s-1}\times\tilde A_{t-1}$ on the set of partitions. We also consider the problem of constructing an $[s{:}t]$-core with specified $s$-core and $t$-core.
Results and conjectures on simultaneous core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
An n-core partition is an integer partition whose Young diagram contains no hook lengths equal to n. We consider partitions that are simultaneously a-core and b-core for two relatively prime integers a and b. These are related to abacus diagrams and the combinatorics of the affine symmetric group (type A). We observe that self-conjugate simultaneous core partitions correspond to the combinatorics of type C, and use abacus diagrams to unite the discussion of these two sets of objects. In particular, we prove that (2n)- and (2mn+1)-core partitions correspond naturally to dominant alcoves in the m-Shi arrangement of type C_n, generalizing a result of Fishel--Vazirani for type A. We also introduce a major statistic on simultaneous n- and (n+1)-core partitions and on self-conjugate simultaneous (2n)- and (2n+1)-core partitions that yield q-analogues of the Coxeter-Catalan numbers of type A and type C. We present related conjectures and open questions on the average size of a simultaneous core partition, q-analogs of generalized Catalan numbers, and generalizations to other Coxeter groups. We also discuss connections with the cyclic sieving phenomenon and q,t-Catalan numbers.

Type A Molecules are Kazhdan-Lusztig
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let (W, S) be a Coxeter system. A W-graph is an encoding of a representation of the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra. Especially important examples include the W-graph corresponding to the action of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, as well as this graph's strongly connected components (cells). In 2008, Stembridge identified some common features of the Kazhdan-Lusztig graphs and gave a combinatorial characterization of all W-graphs that have these features. He conjectured, and checked up to n=9, that all such A_n-cells are Kazhdan-Lusztig cells. The current paper provides a first step toward a potential proof of the conjecture. More concretely, we prove that the connected subgraphs of A_n-cells consisting of simple (i.e. directed both ways) edges are the same as in the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells.

Coxeter groups and their quotients arising from cluster algebras
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices (2016), 5135-5186 • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Barot and Marsh presented an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group by any seed of corresponding cluster algebra, i.e. by any diagram mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with given Weyl group. Extending their construction to the affine case, we obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups. Furthermore, we generalize the construction to the settings of diagrams arising from unpunctured triangulated surfaces and orbifolds, which leads to presentations of corresponding groups as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups.

Growth rates of cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups and 2-Salem numbers
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 14 (2014) 2721-2746 • View PublicationBIB
By the results of Cannon, Wagreich and Parry, it is known that the growth rate of a cocompact Coxeter group in 2-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^2$ and 3-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^3$ is a Salem number. Kerada defined a j-Salem number, which is a generalization of a Salem number. In this paper, we realize infinitely many 2-Salem numbers as the growth rates of cocompact Coxeter groups in 4-dimensional hyperbolic space $H ^4$. Our Coxeter polytopes are constructed by successive gluing of Coxeter polytopes which we call Coxeter dominoes.
