In [5] (=Terao, H.: Multiderivations of Coxeter arrangements. Inventiones math., 148 (2002) 659--674), we constructed a basis for the contact-order filtration of the module of derivations on the orbit space of a finite real reflection group acting on an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. Recently M. Yoshinaga constructed another basis for the contact-order filtration in [7] (=Yoshinaga, M.: The primitive derivation and freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements. preprint 2002). In this note we give an explicit formula relating Yoshinaga's basis to the basis given in [5]. The two bases turn out to be equal (up to a constant matrix).

We introduce the polytope of pointed pseudo-triangulations of a point set in the plane, defined as the polytope of infinitesimal expansive motions of the points subject to certain constraints on the increase of their distances. Its 1-skeleton is the graph whose vertices are the pointed pseudo-triangulations of the point set and whose edges are flips of interior pseudo-triangulation edges.
For points in convex position we obtain a new realization of the associahedron, i.e., a geometric representation of the set of triangulations of an n-gon, or of the set of binary trees on n vertices, or of many other combinatorial objects that are counted by the Catalan numbers. By considering the 1-dimensional version of the polytope of constrained expansive motions we obtain a second distinct realization of the associahedron as a perturbation of the positive cell in a Coxeter arrangement.
Our methods produce as a by-product a new proof that every simple polygon or polygonal arc in the plane has expansive motions, a key step in the proofs of the Carpenter's Rule Theorem by Connelly, Demaine and Rote (2000) and by Streinu (2000).

The Hodge filtration of the module of derivations on the orbit space of a finite real reflection group acting on an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space was introduced and studied by K. Saito. The filtration is equivalent data to the flat structure or the Frobenius manifold structure. We will show that the Hodge filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of contacts to the reflecting hyperplanes. Moreover, a standard basis for the Hodge filtration is explicitly given.
Chord Diagrams and Coxeter Links

This paper presents a construction of fibered links $(K,Σ)$ out of chord diagrams $\sL$. Let $Γ$ be the incidence graph of $\sL$. Under certain conditions on $\sL$ the symmetrized Seifert matrix of $(K,Σ)$ equals the bilinear form of the simply-laced Coxeter system $(W,S)$ associated to $Γ$; and the monodromy of $(K,Σ)$ equals minus the Coxeter element of $(W,S)$. Lehmer's problem is solved for the monodromy of these Coxeter links.

We study diagrams associated with a finite simplicial complex K, in various algebraic and topological categories. We relate their colimits to familiar structures in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and topology. These include: right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups (and their complex analogues, which we call circulation groups); Stanley-Reisner algebras and coalgebras; Davis and Januszkiewicz's spaces DJ(K) associated with toric manifolds and their generalisations; and coordinate subspace arrangements. When K is a flag complex, we extend well-known results on Artin and Coxeter groups by confirming that the relevant circulation group is homotopy equivalent to the space of loops $ΩDJ(K)$. We define homotopy colimits for diagrams of topological monoids and topological groups, and show they commute with the formation of classifying spaces in a suitably generalised sense. We deduce that the homotopy colimit of the appropriate diagram of topological groups is a model for $ΩDJ(K)$ for an arbitrary complex K, and that the natural projection onto the original colimit is a homotopy equivalence when K is flag. In this case, the two models are compatible.
On 321-avoiding permutations in affine Weyl groups

We introduce the notion of 321-avoiding permutations in the affine Weyl group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$ by considering the group as a George group (in the sense of Eriksson and Eriksson). This enables us to generalize a result of Billey, Jockusch and Stanley to show that the 321-avoiding permutations in $W$ coincide with the set of fully commutative elements; in other words, any two reduced expressions for a 321-avoiding element of $W$ (considered as a Coxeter group) may be obtained from each other by repeated applications of short braid relations.
Using Shi's characterization of the Kazhdan--Lusztig cells in the group $W$, we use our main result to show that the fully commutative elements of $W$ form a union of Kazhdan--Lusztig cells. This phenomenon has been studied by the author and J. Losonczy for finite Coxeter groups, and is interesting partly because it allows certain structure constants for the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of the associated Hecke algebra to be computed combinatorially.
We also show how some of our results can be generalized to a larger group of permutations, the extended affine Weyl group associated to $GL_n({\Bbb C})$.
Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials

Our main theorems provide a single geometric setting in which polynomial representatives for Schubert classes in the integral cohomology ring of the flag manifold are determined uniquely, and have positive coefficients for geometric reasons. This results in a geometric explanation for the naturality of Schubert polynomials and their associated combinatorics.
Given a permutation w in S_n, we consider a determinantal ideal I_w whose generators are certain minors in the generic n x n matrix (filled with independent variables). Using `multidegrees' as simple algebraic substitutes for torus-equivariant cohomology classes on vector spaces, our main theorems describe, for each ideal I_w:
- variously graded multidegrees and Hilbert series in terms of ordinary and double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials;
- a Gröbner basis consisting of minors in the generic n x n matrix;
- the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal in terms of known combinatorial diagrams associated to permutations in S_n; and
- a procedure inductive on weak Bruhat order for listing the facets of this complex, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials by a positive recursion on combinatorial diagrams.
We show that the initial ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, by identifying the Stanley-Reisner complex as a special kind of ``subword complex in S_n'', which we define generally for arbitrary Coxeter groups, and prove to be shellable by giving an explicit vertex decomposition. We also prove geometrically a general positivity statement for multidegrees of subschemes.
Shuffles on Coxeter groups
The random-to-top and the riffle shuffle are two well-studied methods for shuffling a deck of cards. These correspond to the symmetric group $S_n$, i.e., the Coxeter group of type $A_{n-1}$. In this paper, we give analogous shuffles for the Coxeter groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. These can be interpreted as shuffles on a ``signed'' deck of cards. With these examples as motivation, we abstract the notion of a shuffle algebra which captures the connection between the algebraic structure of the shuffles and the geometry of the Coxeter groups. We also briefly discuss the generalisation to buildings which leads to q-analogues.

Let W be a finite group generated by unitary reflections and A be the set of reflecting hyperplanes. We will give a characterization of the logarithmic differential forms with poles along A in terms of anti-invariant differential forms. If W is a Coxeter group defined over the real numbers, then the characterization provides a new method to find a basis for the module of logarithmic differential forms out of basic invariants.

Let $V$ be an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. Let $G \subset O(V)$ be a finite irreducible orthogonal reflection group. Let ${\cal A}$ be the corresponding Coxeter arrangement. Let $S$ be the algebra of polynomial functions on $V.$ For $H \in {\cal A}$ choose $α_H \in V^*$ such that $H = {\rm ker}(α_H).$ For each nonnegative integer $m$, define the derivation module $\sD^{(m)}({\cal A}) = \{θ\in {\rm Der}_S | θ(α_H) \in S α^m_H\}$. The module is known to be a free $S$-module of rank $\ell$ by K. Saito (1975) for $m=1$ and L. Solomon-H. Terao (1998) for $m=2$. The main result of this paper is that this is the case for all $m$. Moreover we explicitly construct a basis for $\sD^{(m)} (\cal A)$. Their degrees are all equal to $mh/2$ (when $m$ is even) or are equal to $((m-1)h/2) + m_i (1 \leq i \leq \ell)$ (when $m$ is odd). Here $m_1 \leq ... \leq m_{\ell}$ are the exponents of $G$ and $h= m_{\ell} + 1$ is the Coxeter number. The construction heavily uses the primitive derivation $D$ which plays a central role in the theory of flat generators by K. Saito (or equivalently the Frobenius manifold structure for the orbit space of $G$.) Some new results concerning the primitive derivation $D$ are obtained in the course of proof of the main result.
The Sign Representation for Shephard Groups

Shephard groups are unitary reflection groups arising as the symmetries of regular complex polytopes. For a Shephard group, we identify the representation carried by the principal ideal in the coinvariant algebra generated by the image of the product of all linear forms defining reflecting hyperplanes. This representation turns out to have many equivalent guises making it analogous to the sign representation of a finite Coxeter group. One of these guises is (up to a twist) the cohomology of the Milnor fiber for the isolated singularity at 0 in the hypersurface defined by any homogeneous invariant of minimal degree.
Oriented Lagrangian Matroids

In this paper we present a definition of oriented Lagrangian symplectic matroids and their representations. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components. The definitions are made first in terms of a combinatorial axiomatisation, and then again in terms of elementary geometric properties of the Coxeter matroid polytope. We also generalise the concept of rank and signature of a quadratic form to symplectic Lagrangian matroids in a surprisingly natural way.

A new extension of the major index, defined in terms of Coxeter elements, is introduced. For the classical Weyl groups of type $B$, it is equidistributed with length. For more general wreath products it appears in an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of the (diagonal action) invariant algebra.
Stratified spaces formed by totally positive varieties

By a theorem of A.Björner, for every interval $[u,v]$ in the Bruhat order of a Coxeter group $W$, there exists a stratified space whose strata are labeled by the elements of $[u,v]$, adjacency is described by the Bruhat order, and each closed stratum (resp., the boundary of each stratum) has the homology of a ball (resp., of a sphere). Answering a question posed by Björner, we suggest a natural geometric realization of these stratified spaces for a Weyl group $W$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$, and prove its validity in the case of the symmetric group. Our stratified spaces arise as links in the Bruhat decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of the unipotent radical of $G$.
Simply-laced Coxeter groups and groups generated by symplectic transvections

Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.
Embedding of regular tilings and star-honeycomb
We review the regular tilings of d-sphere, Euclidean d-space, hyperbolic d-space and Coxeter's regular hyperbolic honeycombs (with infinite or star-shaped cells or vertex figures) with respect of possible embedding, isometric up to a scale, of their skeletons into a m-cube or m-dimensional cubic lattice. In section 2 the last remaining 2-dimensional case is decided: for any odd m>6, star-honeycombs {m, m/2} are embeddable while {m/2, m} are not (unique case of non-embedding for dimension 2). As a spherical analogue of those honeycombs, we enumerate, in section 3, 36 Riemann surfaces representing all nine regular polyhedra on the sphere. In section 4, non-embeddability of all remaining star-honeycombs (on 3-sphere and hyperbolic 4-space) is proved. In the last section 5, all cases of embedding for dimension d>2 are identified. Besides hyper-simplices and hyper-octahedra, they are exactly those with bipartite skeleton: hyper-cubes, cubic lattices and 8, 2, 1 tilings of hyperbolic 3-, 4-, 5-space (only two, {435} and {4335}, of those 11 are compact).
Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups

Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

We suggest new realizations of quantum groups corresponding to complex simple Lie algebras, and of affine quantum groups. These new realizations are labeled by Coxeter elements of the corresponding Weyl group and have the following key feature: The natural counterparts of the subalgebras U(n), where n is a maximal nilpotent subalgebra in g, possess non--singular characters.
A Pieri-type formula for isotropic flag manifolds

We give the formula for multiplying a Schubert class on an odd orthogonal or symplectic flag manifold by a special Schubert class pulled back from a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces. This is also the formula for multiplying a type $B$ (respectively, type $C$) Schubert polynomial by the Schur $P$-polynomial $p_m$ (respectively, the Schur $Q$-polynomial $q_m$). Geometric constructions and intermediate results allow us to ultimately deduce this from formulas for the classical flag manifold. These intermediate results are concerned with the Bruhat order of the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$, identities of the structure constants for the Schubert basis of cohomology, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We show these identities follow from the Pieri-type formula, except some `hidden symmetries' of the structure constants. Our analysis leads to a new partial order on the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$ and formulas for many of these structure constants.
An independent set axiomatization for symplectic matroids
One of the simplest axiomatizations of a matroid is in terms of independent sets. Curiously, no such independent set axiomatization is known for Gelfand and Serganova's WP-matroids (which are ``Coxeter group analogues'' of matroids). Here we state and prove such an axiomatization in the special case of symplectic matroids. No prior knowledge of WP-matroids is assumed; we believe the paper should be accessible and interesting to anyone with some interest in matroids.
