Some observations about determinants which are connected with Catalan numbers and related topics
In this (mostly expository) paper I want to share some observations prompted by a class of matrices whose determinants are Catalan numbers. Considering different methods of proof we obtain some generalizations and q-analogues and connections with Hankel determinants. Finally we state some conjectures.
Linear algebraic techniques for weighted spanning tree enumeration

The weighted spanning tree enumerator of a graph $G$ with weighted edges is the sum of the products of edge weights over all the spanning trees in $G$. In the special case that all of the edge weights equal $1$, the weighted spanning tree enumerator counts the number of spanning trees in $G$. The Weighted Matrix-Tree Theorem asserts that the weighted spanning tree enumerator can be calculated from the determinant of a reduced weighted Laplacian matrix of $G$. That determinant, however, is not always easy to compute. In this paper, we show how two well-known results from linear algebra, the Matrix Determinant Lemma and the method of Schur complements, can be used to elegantly compute the weighted spanning tree enumerator for several families of graphs.
Maximal determinants of sparse zero-one matrices
We give upper bounds for the determinant of an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix containing $kn$ ones for integral $k$. Our results improve upon a result of Ryser for $k=o(n^{1/3})$. For fixed $k\ge 3$ it was an open question whether Hadamard's inequality could be exponentially improved. We answer this in the affirmative. Our results stem from studying matrices with row sums $k$ and bounding their Gram determinants. Our technique allows us to give upper bounds when these matrices are perturbed.

We introduce the notion of quasi-orthogonal cocycle. This is motivated in part by the maximal determinant problem for square $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices of size congruent to $2$ modulo $4$. Quasi-orthogonal cocycles are analogous to the orthogonal cocycles of algebraic design theory. Equivalences with new and known combinatorial objects afforded by this analogy, such as quasi-Hadamard groups, relative quasi-difference sets, and certain partially balanced incomplete block designs, are proved.
An observation on the determinant of a Sylvester-Kac type matrix
Based on a less-known result, we prove a recent conjecture concerning the determinant of a certain Sylvester-Kac type matrix and consider an extension of it.
Enumerative combinatorics on determinants and signed bigrassmannian polynomials

As an application of linear algebra for enumerative combinatorics, we introduce two new ideas, signed bigrassmannian polynomials and bigrassmannian determinant. First, a signed bigrassmannian polynomial is a variant of the statistic given by the number of bigrassmannian permutations below a permutation in Bruhat order as Reading suggested (2002) and afterward the author developed (2011). Second, bigrassmannian determinant is a $q$-analog of the determinant with respect to our statistic. It plays a key role for a determinantal expression of those polynomials. We further show that bigrassmannian determinant satisfies weighted condensation as a generalization of Dodgson, Jacobi-Desnanot and Robbins-Rumsey (1986).

Given two $\left( n+1\right) \times\left( n+1\right)$-matrices $A$ and $B$ over a commutative ring, and some $k\in\left\{ 0,1,\ldots,n\right\}$, we consider the $\dbinom{n}{k}\times\dbinom{n}{k}$-matrix $W$ whose entries are $\left( k+1\right) \times\left( k+1\right)$-minors of $A$ multiplied by corresponding $\left( k+1\right) \times\left( k+1\right)$-minors of $B$. Here we require the minors to use the last row and the last column (which is why we obtain an $\dbinom{n}{k}\times\dbinom{n}{k}$-matrix, not an $\dbinom{n+1}{k+1}\times\dbinom{n+1}{k+1}$-matrix). We prove that the determinant $\det W$ is a multiple of $\det A$ if the $\left( n+1,n+1\right)$-th entry of $B$ is $0$. Furthermore, if the $\left( n+1,n+1\right)$-th entries of both $A$ and $B$ are $0$, then $\det W$ is a multiple of $\left( \det A\right) \left( \det B\right)$. This extends a previous result of Olver and the author ( arXiv:1802.02900 ).

In recent work, the authors used an order lowering operator $\nabla$, introduced by Stanley, to prove the strong Sperner property for the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt interpreted $\nabla$ as a differential operator on Schubert polynomials and used this to prove a new identity for Schubert polynomials and a determinant conjecture of Stanley. In this paper we study a raising operator $Δ$ for the \emph{strong} Bruhat order, which is in many ways dual to $\nabla$. We prove a Schubert identity dual to that of Hamaker et al. and derive formulas for counting weighted paths in the Hasse diagrams of the strong order which agree with path counting formulas for the weak order. We also show that powers of $\nabla$ and $Δ$ have the same Smith normal forms, which we describe explicitly, answering a question of Stanley.

In 1945-46, C. L. Siegel proved that an $n$-dimensional lattice $Λ$ of determinant ${\rm det}(Λ)$ has at most $m^{n^2}$ different sublattices of determinant $m\cdot {\rm det}(Λ)$. In 1997, the exact number of the different sublattices of index $m$ was determined by Baake. This paper presents a systematic treatment for counting the sublattices and deduces a formula for the number of the sublattice classes of determinant $m\cdot {\rm det}(Λ)$.

Every irreducible odd dimensional representation of the $n$'th symmetric or hyperoctahedral group, when restricted to the $(n-1)$'th, has a unique irreducible odd-dimensional constituent. Furthermore, the subgraph induced by odd-dimensional representations in the Bratteli diagram of symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups is a binary tree with a simple recursive description. We survey the description of this tree, known as the Macdonald tree, for symmetric groups, from our earlier work. We describe analogous results for hyperoctahedral groups.
A partition $λ$ of $n$ is said to be chiral if the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We review our previous results on the structure and enumeration of chiral partitions, and subsequent extension to all Coxeter groups by Ghosh and Spallone. Finally we show that the numbers of odd and chiral partitions track each other closely.

We study the action of a differential operator on Schubert polynomials. Using this action, we first give a short new proof of an identity of I. Macdonald (1991). We then prove a determinant conjecture of R. Stanley (2017). This conjecture implies the (strong) Sperner property for the weak order on the symmetric group, a property recently established by C. Gaetz and Y. Gao (2018).
A Categorification of the Vandermonde Determinant

In the spirit of Bar Natan's construction of Khovanov homology, we give a categorification of the Vandermonde determinant. Given a sequence of positive integers $\vec{x}=(x_1,...,x_n)$, we construct a commutative diagram in the shape of the Bruhat order on $S_n$ whose nodes are colored smoothings of the $2$-strand torus link $T_{2,n}$, and whose arrows are colored cobordisms. An application of a TQFT to this diagram yields a chain complex whose Euler characteristic is the Vandermonde determinant evaluated at $\vec{x}$. A generalization to arbitrary link diagrams is given, producing categorifications of certain generalized Vandermonde determinants. We also address functoriality of this construction.

The Hankel determinants $\left(\frac{r}{2(i+j)+r}\binom{2(i+j)+r}{i+j}\right)_{0\leq i,j \leq n-1}$ of the convolution powers of Catalan numbers were considered by Cigler and by Cigler and Krattenthaler. We evaluate these determinants for $r\le 31$ by finding shifted periodic continued fractions, which arose in application of Sulanke and Xin's continued fraction method. These include some of the conjectures of Cigler as special cases. We also conjectured a polynomial characterization of these determinants. The same technique is used to evaluate the Hankel determinants $\left(\binom{2(i+j)+r}{i+j}\right)_{0\leq i,j \leq n-1} $. Similar results are obtained.

In this article, we construct SL$_k$-friezes using Plücker coordinates, making use of the cluster structure on the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian of $k$-spaces in $n$-space via the Plücker embedding. When this cluster algebra is of finite type, the SL$_k$-friezes are in bijection with the so-called mesh friezes of the corresponding Grassmannian cluster category. These are collections of positive integers on the AR-quiver of the category with relations inherited from the mesh relations on the category. In these finite type cases, many of the SL$_k$-friezes arise from specialising a cluster to 1. These are called unitary. We use Iyama-Yoshino reduction to analyse the non-unitary friezes. With this, we provide an explanation for all known friezes of this kind. An appendix by Cuntz and Plamondon proves that there are 868 friezes of type $E_6$.
A new determinant for the $Q$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices

Fischer provided a new type of binomial determinant for the number of alternating sign matrices involving the third root of unity. In this paper we prove that her formula, when replacing the third root of unity by an indeterminate $q$, is actually the $(2+q+q^{-1})$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices. By evaluating a generalisation of this determinant we are able to reprove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey stating that the $Q$-enumeration is a product of two polynomials in $Q$. Further we provide a closed product formula for the generalised determinant in the 0-,1- 2- and 3-enumeration case, leading to a new proof of the $1$-,$2$- and $3$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices, and a factorisation in the $4$-enumeration case. Finally we relate the $1$-enumeration of our generalised determinant to the determinant evaluations of Ciucu, Eisenkölbl, Krattenthaler and Zare, which counts weighted cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole and is a generalisation of a famous result by Andrews.

Using the description of multiline queues as functions on words, we introduce the notion of a spectral weight of a word by defining a new weighting on multiline queues. We show that the spectral weight of a word is invariant under a natural action of the symmetric group, giving a proof of the commutativity conjecture of Arita, Ayyer, Mallick, and Prolhac. We give a determinant formula for the spectral weight of a word, which gives a proof of a conjecture of the first author and Linusson.
Squared distance matrix of a weighted tree

Let $T$ be a tree with vertex set $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that each edge is assigned a nonzero weight. The squared distance matrix of $T,$ denoted by $Δ,$ is the $n \times n$ matrix with $(i,j)$-element $d(i,j)^2,$ where $d(i,j)$ is the sum of the weights of the edges on the $(ij)$-path. We obtain a formula for the determinant of $Δ.$ A formula for $Δ^{-1}$ is also obtained, under certain conditions. The results generalize known formulas for the unweighted case.
Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

A special case of a fundamental result of Loewner and Horn [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1969] says that given an integer $n \geq 1$, if the entrywise application of a smooth function $f : (0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ preserves the set of $n \times n$ positive semidefinite matrices with positive entries, then $f$ and its first $n-1$ derivatives are non-negative on $(0,\infty)$. In a recent joint work with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [J. Eur. Math. Soc., in press], we proved a stronger version, and used it to strengthen the Schoenberg-Rudin characterization of dimension-free positivity preservers [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959].
In recent works with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [Adv. Math. 2016] and with Tao [Amer. J. Math., in press] we used local, real-analytic versions at the origin of the Horn-Loewner condition, and discovered unexpected connections between entrywise polynomials preserving positivity and Schur polynomials. In this paper, we unify these two stories via a Master Theorem (Theorem A) which (i) simultaneously unifies and extends all of the aforementioned variants; and (ii) proves the positivity of the first $n$ nonzero Taylor coefficients at individual points rather than on all of $(0,\infty)$.
A key step in the proof is a new determinantal / symmetric function calculation (Theorem B), which shows that Schur polynomials arise naturally from considering arbitrary entrywise maps that are sufficiently differentiable. Of independent interest may be the following application to symmetric function theory: we extend the Schur function expansion of Cauchy's (1841) determinant (whose matrix entries are geometric series $1 / (1 - u_j v_k)$), as well as of a determinant of Frobenius [J. reine angew. Math. 1882] (whose matrix entries are a sum of two geometric series), to arbitrary power series, and over all commutative rings.
