The $τ$-function of the Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions to Painlevé II as a Widom constant
Published • View PublicationBIB
$τ$-functions of certain Painlevé equations (PVI,PV,PIII) can be expressed as a Fredholm determinant. Further, the minor expansion of these determinants provide an interesting connection to Random partitions. This paper is a step towards understanding whether the $τ$-function of Painlevé II has a Fredholm determinant representation. The Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions are special one parameter solutions of Painlevé II and the corresponding $τ$-function is known to be the Fredholm determinant of the Airy Kernel. We develop a formalism for open contour in parallel to the one formulated in \cite{CGL} in terms of the Widom constant and verify that the Widom constant for Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions is indeed the determinant of the Airy Kernel. Finally, we construct a suitable basis and obtain the minor expansion of the Ablowitz-Segur $τ$-function.

Linear independences of maps associated to partitions
Given a suitable collection of partitions of sets, there exists a connection to easy quantum groups via intertwiner maps. A sufficient condition for this correspondence to be one-to-one are particular linear independences on the level of those maps. In the case of non-crossing partitions, a proof of this linear independence can be traced back to a matrix determinant formula, developed by W. Tutte. We present a revised and adapted version of Tutte's work and the link to the problem above, believing that this self-contained article will assist others in the field of easy quantum groups. In particular, we fixed some errors in the original work and adapted notations, definitions, statements and proofs.

Explicit and compact representations for the Green's function and the Solution of Linear Difference Equations with variable coefficients
Leibniz' combinatorial formula for determinants is modified to establish a condensed and easily handled compact representation for Hessenbergians, referred to here as Leibnizian representation. Alongside, the elements of a fundamental solution set associated with linear difference equations with variable coefficients of order $p$ are explicitly represented by $p$ banded Hessenbergian solutions, built up solely of the variable coefficients. This yields banded Hessenbergian representations for the elements both of the product of companion matrices and of the determinant ratio formula of the one-sided Green's function (Green's function for short). Combining the above results, the elements of the foregoing notions are endowed with compact representations formulated here by Leibnizian and nested sum representations. We show that the elements of the fundamental solution set can be expressed in terms of the first banded Hessenbergian fundamental solution, called principal determinant function. We also show that the Green's function coincides with the principal determinant function, when both functions are restricted to a fairly large domain. These results yield, an explicit and compact representation of the Green's function restriction along with an explicit and compact solution representation of the previously stated type of difference equations in terms of the variable coefficients, the initial conditions and the forcing term. The equivalence of the Green's function solution representation and the well known single determinant solution representation is derived from first principles. Algorithms and automated software are employed to illustrate the main results of this paper.

Characteristic Power Series of Graph Limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we show how to obtain a "characteristic power series" of graphons -- infinite limits of dense graphs -- as the limit of normalized reciprocal characteristic polynomials. This leads to a new characterization of graph quasi-randomness and another perspective on spectral theory for graphons, a complete description of the function in terms of the spectrum of the graphon as a self-adjoint kernel operator. Interestingly, while we apply a standard regularization to classical determinants, it is unclear how necessary this is.
Distance Matrix of a Class of Completely Positive Graphs: Determinant and Inverse
Published • View PublicationBIB
A real symmetric matrix $A$ is said to be completely positive if it can be written as $BB^t$ for some (not necessarily square) nonnegative matrix $B$. A simple graph $G$ is called a completely positive graph if every doubly nonnegative matrix realization of $G$ is a completely positive matrix. Our aim in this manuscript is to compute the determinant and inverse (when it exists) of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs. Similar to trees, we obtain a relation for the inverse of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs involving the Laplacian matrix, a rank one matrix and a matrix $\mathcal{R}$. We also determine the eigenvalues of some principal submatrices of matrix $\mathcal{R}$.

Vandermondes in superspace
Superspace of rank $n$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra with $n$ commuting generators $x_1, \dots, x_n$ and $n$ anticommuting generators $θ_1, \dots, θ_n$. We present an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to superspace which depends on a sequence $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_r)$ of nonnegative integers of length $r \leq n$. We use superspace Vandermondes to construct graded representations of the symmetric group. This construction recovers hook-shaped Tanisaki quotients, the coinvariant ring for the Delta Conjecture constructed by Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono, and a superspace quotient related to positroids and Chern plethysm constructed by Billey, Rhoades, and Tewari. We define a notion of partial differentiation with respect to anticommuting variables to construct doubly graded modules from superspace Vandermondes. These doubly graded modules carry a natural ring structure which satisfies a 2-dimensional version of Poincaré duality. The application of polarization operators gives rise to other bigraded modules which give a conjectural module for the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.

Hankel Continued fractions and Hankel determinants of the Euler numbers
The Euler numbers occur in the Taylor expansion of $\tan(x)+\sec(x)$. Since Stieltjes, continued fractions and Hankel determinants of the even Euler numbers, on the one hand, of the odd Euler numbers, on the other hand, have been widely studied separately. However, no Hankel determinants of the (mixed) Euler numbers have been obtained and explicitly calculated. The reason for that is that some Hankel determinants of the Euler numbers are null. This implies that the Jacobi continued fraction of the Euler numbers does not exist. In the present paper, this obstacle is bypassed by using the Hankel continued fraction, instead of the $J$-fraction. Consequently, an explicit formula for the Hankel determinants of the Euler numbers is being derived, as well as a full list of Hankel continued fractions and Hankel determinants involving Euler numbers. Finally, a new $q$-analog of the Euler numbers $E_n(q)$ based on our continued fraction is proposed. We obtain an explicit formula for $E_n(-1)$ and prove a conjecture by R. J. Mathar on these numbers.
The Partial differential coefficients for the second weghted Bartholdi zeta function of a graph
We consider the second weighted Bartholdi zeta function of a graph $G$, and present weighted versions for the result of Li and Hou's on the partial derivatives of the determinant part in the determinant expression of the Bartholdi zeta function of $G$. Furthermore, we give a formula for the weighted Kirchhoff index of a regular covering of $G$ in terms of that of $G$.

Transition between characters of classical groups, decomposition of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and last passage percolation
Published in Adv. Math., 404-B, 108453 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.
A Generalization of the Gram determinant of type A
Published in Topology and its Applications Volume 295, 15 May 2021, 107663 • View PublicationBIB
The Gram determinant of type $A$ was introduced by Lickorish in his work on invariants of 3 - manifolds. We generalize the theory of the Gram determinant of type $A$ by evaluating, in the annulus, a bilinear form of non-intersecting connections in the disc. The main result provides a closed formula for this Gram determinant. We conclude the paper by discussing Chen's conjecture about the Gram determinant of type $Mb$ evaluated in the Klein bottle.

Bijective proofs of skew Schur polynomial factorizations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 174, August 2020, 105241, 40pp • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.

A theorem on shifted Hankel determinants

Distribution of determinant of sum of matrices
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be an arbitrary finite field of order $q$. In this article, we study $\det S$ for certain types of subsets $S$ in the ring $M_2(\mathbb F_q)$ of $2\times 2$ matrices with entries in $\mathbb F_q$. For $i\in \mathbb{F}_q$, let $D_i$ be the subset of $M_2(\mathbb F_q)$ defined by $ D_i := \{x\in M_2(\mathbb F_q): \det(x)=i\}.$ Then our results can be stated as follows. First of all, we show that when $E$ and $F$ are subsets of $D_i$ and $D_j$ for some $i, j\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$, respectively, we have $$\det(E+F)=\mathbb F_q,$$ whenever $|E||F|\ge {15}^2q^4$, and then provide a concrete construction to show that our result is sharp. Next, as an application of the first result, we investigate a distribution of the determinants generated by the sum set $(E\cap D_i) + (F\cap D_j),$ when $E, F$ are subsets of the product type, i.e., $U_1\times U_2\subseteq \mathbb F_q^2\times \mathbb F_q^2$ under the identification $ M_2(\mathbb F_q)=\mathbb F_q^2\times \mathbb F_q^2$. Lastly, as an extended version of the first result, we prove that if $E$ is a set in $D_i$ for $i\ne 0$ and $k$ is large enough, then we have \[\det(2kE):=\det(\underbrace{E + \dots + E}_{2k~terms})\supseteq \mathbb{F}_q^*,\] whenever the size of $E$ is close to $q^{\frac{3}{2}}$. Moreover, we show that, in general, the threshold $q^{\frac{3}{2}}$ is best possible. Our main method is based on the discrete Fourier analysis.

The Varchenko Determinant for Apartments
Published • View PublicationBIB
Varchenko introduced a distance function on chambers of hyperplane arrangements that he called quantum bilinear form. That gave rise to a determinant indexed by chambers whose entry in position $(C,D)$ is the distance between $C$ and $D$: that is the Varchenko determinant. He showed that that determinant has a nice factorization. Later, Aguiar and Mahajan defined a generalization of the quantum bilinear form, and computed the Varchenko determinant given rise by that generalization for central hyperplane arrangements and their cones. This article takes inspiration from their proof strategy to compute the Varchenko determinant given rise by their distance function for apartment of hyperplane arrangements. Those latter are in fact realizable conditional oriented matroids.

Determinants of Seidel matrices and a conjecture of Ghorbani
Let $G_n$ be a simple graph on $V_n=\{v_1,\dots, v_n\}$. The Seidel matrix $S(G_n)$ of $G_n$ is the $n\times n$ matrix whose $(ij)$'th entry, for $i\neq j$ is $-1$ if $v_i\sim v_j$ and $1$ otherwise, and whose diagonal entries are $0$. We show that the proportion of simple graphs $G_n$ such that $\det(S(G_n))\geq n-1$ tends to one as $n$ tends to infinity.

A directed graph structure of alternating sign matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 519 (2017), 164-190 • Search Publication
We introduce a new directed graph structure into the set of alternating sign matrices. This includes Bruhat graph (Bruhat order) of the symmetric groups as a subgraph (subposet). Drake-Gerrish-Skandera (2004, 2006) gave characterizations of Bruhat order in terms of total nonnegativity (TNN) and subtraction-free Laurent (SFL) expressions for permutation monomials. With our directed graph, we extend their idea in two ways: first, from permutations to alternating sign matrices; second, $q$-analogs (which we name $q$TNN and $q$SFL properties). %In our discussion, essential sets, introduced by Fulton in a rather different context, play a key role. As a by-product, we obtain a new kind of permutation statistic, the signed bigrassmannian statistics, using Dodgson's condensation on determinants.

Presentations of Transversal Valuated Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $d$ row vectors of $n$ tropical numbers, $d<n$, the tropical Stiefel map constructs a version of their row space, whose Plücker coordinates are tropical determinants. We explicitly describe the fibers of this map. From the viewpoint of matroid theory, the tropical Stiefel map defines a generalization of transversal matroids in the valuated context, and our results are the valuated generalizations of theorems of Brualdi and Dinolt, Mason and others on the set of all set families that present a given transversal matroid. We show that a connected valuated matroid is transversal if and only if all of its connected initial matroids are. The duals of our results describe complete stable intersections via valuated strict gammoids.

Linear algebraic techniques for spanning tree enumeration
Published in The American Mathematical Monthly, 127:4, 297-307 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Kirchhoff's Matrix-Tree Theorem asserts that the number of spanning trees in a finite graph can be computed from the determinant of any of its reduced Laplacian matrices. In many cases, even for well-studied families of graphs, this can be computationally or algebraically taxing. We show how two well-known results from linear algebra, the Matrix Determinant Lemma and the Schur complement, can be used to elegantly count the spanning trees in several significant families of graphs.

Factorial Flagged Grothendieck Polynomials

We show that the factorial flagged Grothendieck polynomials defined by flagged set-valued tableaux of Knutson-Miller-Yong can be expressed by a Jacobi-Trudi type determinant formula, generalizing the work of Hudson-Matsumura. In particular, we obtain an alternative proof of the tableau and determinant formulas of vexillary double Grothendieck polynomials, that have been obtained by Knutson-Miller-Yong and Hudson-Matsumura respectively. Moreover, we show that each factorial flagged Grothendieck polynomial can be obtained from a product of linear polynomials by applying K-theoretic divided difference operators.

On the spectral properties of Feigenbaum graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) is a simple graph extracted from an ordered sequence of real values, and this mapping has been used to provide a combinatorial encryption of time series for the task of performing network based time series analysis. While some properties of the spectrum of these graphs --such as the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix-- have been routinely used as measures to characterise time series complexity, a theoretic understanding of such properties is lacking. In this work we explore some algebraic and spectral properties of these graphs associated to periodic and chaotic time series. We focus on the family of Feigenbaum graphs, which are HVGs constructed in correspondence with the trajectories of one-parameter unimodal maps undergoing a period-doubling route to chaos (Feigenbaum scenario). For the set of values of the map's parameter $μ$ for which the orbits are periodic with period $2^n$, Feigenbaum graphs are fully characterised by two integers (n,k) and admit an algebraic structure. We explore the spectral properties of these graphs for finite n and k, and among other interesting patterns we find a scaling relation for the maximal eigenvalue and we prove some bounds explaining it. We also provide numerical and rigorous results on a few other properties including the determinant or the number of spanning trees. In a second step, we explore the set of Feigenbaum graphs obtained for the range of values of the map's parameter $μ$ for which the system displays chaos. We show that in this case, Feigenbaum graphs form an ensemble for each value of $μ$ and the system is typically weakly self-averaging. Unexpectedly, we find that while the largest eigenvalue can distinguish chaos from an iid process, it is not a good measure to quantify the chaoticity of the process, and that the eigenvalue density does a better job.
