Determinants and Compositions of Natural Numbers
We consider a particular type of matrices which belong at the same time to the class of Hessenberg and Toeplitz matrices, and whose determinants are equal to the number of a type of compositions of natural numbers. We prove a formula in which the number of weak compositions with a fixed number of zeroes is expressed in terms of the number of compositions without zeroes. Then we find a relationship between weak compositions and coefficients of characteristic polynomials of appropriate matrices. Finally, we prove three explicit formulas for weak compositions of a special kind.

Foundations for a theory of complex matroids
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry (2012) 48 : 807-846 • View PublicationBIB
We explore a combinatorial theory of linear dependency in complex space, "complex matroids", with foundations analogous to those for oriented matroids. We give multiple equivalent axiomatizations of complex matroids, showing that this theory captures properties of linear dependency, orthogonality, and determinants over C in much the same way that oriented matroids capture the same properties over R. In addition, our complex matroids come with a canonical circle action analogous to the action of C* on a complex vector space. Our phirotopes (analogues of determinants) are the same as those studied previously by Below, Krummeck, and Richter-Gebert and by Delucchi. We further show that complex matroids cannot have vector axioms analogous to those for oriented matroids.
Tropical Determinant of Integer Doubly-Stochastic Matrices

Let D(m,n) be the set of all the integer points in the m-dilate of the Birkhoff polytope of doubly-stochastic n by n matrices. In this paper we find the sharp upper bound on the tropical determinant over the set D(m,n). We define a version of the tropical determinant where the maximum over all the transversals in a matrix is replaced with the minimum and then find the sharp lower bound on thus defined tropical determinant over D(m,n).

Combinatorics for graded Cartan matrices of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $q$-analogue of combinatorics concerning the Cartan matrix for the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ is investigated. We give several descriptions for the determinant of the graded Cartan matrix, which imply some combinatorial identities. A conjectural expression for the elementary divisors is also presented.

On the Polya permanent problem over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\FF$ be a finite field of characteristics different from two. We show that no bijective map transforms permanent into determinant when the cardinality of $\FF$ is sufficiently large. We also give an example of non-bijective map when $\FF$ is arbitrary and an example of a bijective map when $\FF$ is infinite which do transform permanent into determinant. The developed technique allows us to estimate the probability of the permanent and the determinant of matrices over finite fields to have a given value. Our results are also true over finite rings without zero divisors.

Number of Compositions and Convolved Fibonacci numbers
We consider two type of upper Hessenberg matrices which determinants are Fibonacci numbers. Calculating sums of principal minors of the fixed order of the first type leads us to convolved Fibonacci numbers. Some identities for these and for Fibonacci numbers are proved. We also show that numbers of compositions of a natural number with fixed number of ones appear as coefficients of characteristic polynomial of a Hessenberg matrix which determinant is a Fibonacci number. We derive the explicit formula for the number of such compositions, in terms of convolutions of Fibonacci numbers.

Generalisation of Scott permanent identity
Scott considered the determinant of 1/(y-z)^2, with y,z running over two sets X,Y of size n, and determined its specialisation when Y and Z are the roots of y^n-a and z^n-b. We give the same specialisation for the determinant 1/\prod_x(xy-z), where {x} is an arbitrary set of indeterminates. The case of the Gaudin-Izergin-Korepin is for {x}={q,1/q}.

A multilateral Bailey Lemma and multiple Andrews--Gordon identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
A multilateral Bailey Lemma is proved, and multiple analogues of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities and Euler's Pentagonal Theorem are constructed as applications. The extreme cases of the Andrews--Gordon identities are also generalized using the multilateral Bailey Lemma where their final form is written in terms of determinants of theta functions.

Norm of Bethe Wave Function as a Determinant
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an important role for algebraic combinatorics: alternating sign matrices, domino tiling and plane partition. Many publications are devoted to six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions.

Some determinants of path generating functions
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 46 (2011), 144-174 • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate four families of determinants of matrices, where the entries are sums or differences of generating functions for paths consisting of up-steps, down-steps and level steps. By specialisation, these determinant evaluations have numerous corollaries. In particular, they cover numerous determinant evaluations of combinatorial numbers - most notably of Catalan, ballot, and of Motzkin numbers - that appeared previously in the literature.

Chip-Firing Games, $G$-Parking Functions, and an Efficient Bijective Proof of the Matrix-Tree Theorem
Kirchhoff's matrix-tree theorem states that the number of spanning trees of a graph G is equal to the value of the determinant of the reduced Laplacian of $G$. We outline an efficient bijective proof of this theorem, by studying a canonical finite abelian group attached to $G$ whose order is equal to the value of same matrix determinant. More specifically, we show how one can efficiently compute a bijection between the group elements and the spanning trees of the graph. The main ingredient for computing the bijection is an efficient algorithm for finding the unique $G$-parking function (reduced divisor) in a linear equivalence class defined by a chip-firing game. We also give applications, including a new and completely algebraic algorithm for generating random spanning trees. Other applications include algorithms related to chip-firing games and sandpile group law, as well as certain algorithmic problems about the Riemann-Roch theory on graphs.

An addition theorem and maximal zero-sum free sets in Z/pZ
Using the polynomial method in additive number theory, this article establishes a new addition theorem for the set of subsums of a set satisfying $A\cap(-A)=\emptyset$ in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$: \[|Σ(A)|\geqslant\min{p,1+\frac{|A|(|A|+1)}{2}}.\] The proof is similar in nature to Alon, Nathanson and Ruzsa's proof of the Erdös-Heilbronn conjecture (proved initially by Dias da Silva and Hamidoune \cite{DH}). A key point in the proof of this theorem is the evaluation of some binomial determinants that have been studied in the work of Gessel and Viennot. A generalization to the set of subsums of a sequence is derived, leading to a structural result on zero-sum free sequences. As another application, it is established that for any prime number $p$, a maximal zero-sum free set in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ has cardinality the greatest integer $k$ such that \[\frac{k(k+1)}{2}<p,\] proving a conjecture of Selfridge from 1976.

Determinants and permanents of an arbitrary Hadamard degree of a Cauchy matrix and a proof of a generalization of a conjecture of R.F.Scott (1881)
In this paper we give the absolutely new proof of a conjecture of R.F.Scott(1881) on the permanent of a Cauchy matrix $\ls \frac{1}{x_i-y_j} \rs_{1 \leqslant i,j \leqslant n},$ where $x_1, ..., x_n$ and $y_1, ..., y_n$ are the distinct roots of the polynomials $x^n-1$ and $y^n +1,$ respectively. The simple formula is given for the permanent of the Cauchy matrix $A= \ls \frac{1}{x_i-y_j} \rs_{1 \leqslant i,j \leqslant n},$ where $x_1, ..., x_n$ and $y_1, ..., y_n$ are the distinct roots of the polynomials $x^n+a$ and $y^n +b$, respectively: \begin{gather*} \per (A) =\frac{n}{(b-a)^n} \prod_{k=1}^{n-1}[nb-k(b-a)] = =\begin{cases} %\begin{eqnarray} (-1)^{\frac{n-1}{2}} \cfrac{n}{(b-a)^n} \prod\limits_{k=1}^{\frac{n-1}{2}}[-na-k(b-a)][nb-k(b-a)], \mbox{if $n \equiv 1 (\mod 2)$,} \cfrac{n}{2} \cdot \cfrac{n(a+b)}{(b-a)^n} \prod\limits_{k=1}^{\frac{n}{2}-1}[na+k(b-a)][nb+k(a-b)], \mbox{if $n\equiv 0(\mod 2)$}. %\end{eqnarray} \end{cases} \end{gather*} from which the corrected formula of R.F.Scott follows instantly. Proof follows from obtained by the author a formula for the determinant of an arbitrary of the Hadamard degree $m$ of a Cauchy matrix $A$ and Borchard's theorem.

On a class of determinants
A class of determinants is introduced. Different kind of mathematical objects, such as Fibonacci, Lucas, Tchebychev, Hermite, Laguerre, Legendre polynomials, sums and covergents are represented as determinants from this class. A closed formula in which arbitrary term of a homogenous linear recurrence equation is expressed in terms of the initial conditions and the coefficients is proved.

Resorting to the recursions satisfied by the polynomials which converge to the right hand sides of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities given by Sills and a determinant method presented in a paper by Ismail-Prodinger-Stanton, we obtain many new one-parameter generalizations of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, such as a generalization of the analytic versions of the first and second Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities, and generalizations of the first, second, and third Rogers-Selberg identities.

Generalizing Dodgson's method: a "double-crossing" approach to computing determinants
Published in College Mathematics Journal, vol. 42 no. 1 (Jan 2011), pp. 43--54 • View PublicationBIB
Dodgson's method of computing determinants was recently revisited in a paper that appeared in the College Math Journal. The method is attractive, but fails if an interior entry of an intermediate matrix has the value zero. This paper reviews the structure of Dodgson's method and introduces a generalization, called a "double-crossing" method, that provides a workaround to the failure for many interesting cases.
