A version of Tutte's polynomial for hypergraphs
Tutte's dichromate T(x,y) is a well known graph invariant. Using the original definition in terms of internal and external activities as our point of departure, we generalize the valuations T(x,1) and T(1,y) to hypergraphs. In the definition, we associate activities to hypertrees, which are generalizations of the indicator function of the edge set of a spanning tree. We prove that hypertrees form a lattice polytope which is the set of bases in a polymatroid. In fact, we extend our invariants to integer polymatroids as well. We also examine hypergraphs that can be represented by planar bipartite graphs, write their hypertree polytopes in the form of a determinant, and prove a duality property that leads to an extension of Tutte's Tree Trinity Theorem.
Polynomials for Crystal Frameworks and the Rigid Unit Mode Spectrum

To each discrete translationally periodic bar-joint framework $\C$ in $\bR^d$ we associate a matrix-valued function $Φ_\C(z)$ defined on the d-torus. The rigid unit mode spectrum $Ω(\C)$ of $\C$ is defined in terms of the multi-phases of phase-periodic infinitesimal flexes and is shown to correspond to the singular points of the function $z \to \rank Φ_\C(z)$ and also to the set of wave vectors of harmonic excitations which have vanishing energy in the long wavelength limit. To a crystal framework in Maxwell counting equilibrium, which corresponds to $Φ_\C(z)$ being square, the determinant of $Φ_\C(z)$ gives rise to a unique multi-variable polynomial $p_\C(z_1,\dots,z_d)$. For ideal zeolites the algebraic variety of zeros of $p_\C(z)$ on the d-torus coincides with the RUM spectrum. The matrix function is related to other aspects of idealised framework rigidity and flexibility and in particular leads to an explicit formula for the number of supercell-periodic floppy modes. In the case of certain zeolite frameworks in dimensions 2 and 3 direct proofs are given to show the maximal floppy mode property (order $N$). In particular this is the case for the cubic symmetry sodalite framework and some other idealised zeolites.
Doubly-refined enumeration of Alternating Sign Matrices and determinants of 2-staircase Schur functions
We prove a determinantal identity concerning Schur functions for 2-staircase diagrams lambda=(ln+l',ln,l(n-1)+l',l(n-1),...,l+l',l,l',0). When l=1 and l'=0 these functions are related to the partition function of the 6-vertex model at the combinatorial point and hence to enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices. A consequence of our result is an identity concerning the doubly-refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices.
The determinant bound for discrepancy is almost tight
In 1986 Lovasz, Spencer, and Vesztergombi proved a lower bound for the hereditary a discrepancy of a set system F in terms of determinants of square submatrices of the incidence matrix of F. As shown by an example of Hoffman, this bound can differ from herdisc(F) by a multiplicative factor of order almost log n, where n is the size of the ground set of F. We prove that it never differs by more than O((log n)3/2), assuming |F| bounded by a polynomial in n. We also prove that if such an F is the union of t systems F_1, . . ., F_t, each of hereditary discrepancy at most D, then herdisc(F) \leq O(t^(1/2)(log n)^(3/2) D). For t = 2, this almost answers a question of Sos. The proof is based on a recent algorithmic result of Bansal, which computes low-discrepancy colorings using semidefinite programming.
Singularity of Random Matrices over Finite Fields
Let $A$ be an $n \times n$ random matrix with iid entries over a finite field of order $q$. Suppose that the entries do not take values in any additive coset of the field with probability greater than $1 - α$ for some fixed $0 < α< 1$. We show that the singularity probability converges to the uniform limit with an exponentially small error depending only on $α$. We also show that the distribution of the determinant of $A$ converges to its limiting distribution at an exponential rate.
A New Algorithm for Evaluating Determinants -- The Reduction Method
We present here a new method for evaluating determinants -- the reduction method. Firstly, in the section 2, we apply it to third-order determinants and after, in the section 3, we generalize it to higher-order determinants. In the section 4 an alternative formulation of the reduction method is presented and, in the section 5, we give the respective mathematical proofs.

Motivated by the Hankel determinant evaluation of moment sequences, we study a kind of Pfaffian analogue evaluation. We prove an LU-decomposition analogue for skew-symmetric matrices, called Pfaffian decomposition. We then apply this formula to evaluate Pfaffians related to some moment sequences of classical orthogonal polynomials. In particular we obtain a product formula for a kind of q-Catalan Pfaffians. We also establish a connection between our Pfaffian formulas and certain weighted enumeration of shifted reverse plane partitions.
Idempotents with polynomial coefficients
We combine Young idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group with the action of the symmetric group on products of Vandermonde determinants to obtain idempotents with polynomial coefficients.

This paper presents an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix of a plane bipartite graph obtained from a pretzel knot diagram. The determinant of this matrix after evaluation is shown to be the Jones polynomial of the pretzel knot by way of perfect matchings (or dimers) of this graph. The weights are Tutte's activity letters that arise because the Jones polynomial is a specialization of the signed version of the Tutte polynomial. The relationship is formalized between the familiar spanning tree setting for the Tait graph and the perfect matchings of the plane bipartite graph above. Evaluations of these activity words are related to the chain complex for the Champanerkar-Kofman spanning tree model of reduced Khovanov homology.

We use Jones-Wenzl idempotents to construct bases for the relative Kauffman bracket skein module of a square with n points colored 1 and one point colored h. We consider a natural bilinear form on this skein module. We calculate the determinant of the matrix for this form with respect to the natural basis. We reduce the computation to count some steps in generalized Dyck paths. Moreover, we relate our determinant to a determinant on semi-meanders.

We suggest an approach for the enumeration of minimal permutations having d descents which uses skew Young tableaux. We succeed in finding a general expression for the number of such permutations in terms of (several) sums of determinants. We then generalize the class of skew Young tableaux under consideration; this allows in particular to discover some presumably new results concerning Eulerian numbers.
Un déterminant reproduisant
We evaluate the determinant D = det((y_j u_i - x_j v_i)/(l_j - k_i)) as a function of the last sextuple (u,v,k;x,y,l), the result being shown to have a form reproducing the one of the entries of D.

Nous calculons le déterminant D = det((y_j u_i - x_j v_i)/(l_j - k_i)) comme fonction du dernier des sextuplets (u,v,k;x,y,l), en exprimant le résultat sous une forme qui reproduit celle des entrées de D.
Viewing determinants as nonintersecting lattice paths yields classical determinantal identities bijectively

In this paper, we show how general determinants may be viewed as generating functions of nonintersecting lattice paths, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot interpretation of semistandard Young tableaux and the Jacobi-Trudi identity together with elementary observations. After some preparations, this point of view provides very simple "graphical proofs" for classical determinantal identities like the Cauchy--Binet formula, Dodgson's condensation formula, the Plücker relations and Laplace's expansion. Also, a determinantal identity generalizing Dodgson's condensation formula is presented, which might be new.
Play time with determinants
In this brief semi-expository article we present a few efficient techniques for calculating and proving determinantal identities. Several stimulating examples of different flavor and applications are spread across the pages which we hope the reader will find of particular interest.

We describe the variety of fixed points of a unipotent operator acting on the space of matrices. We compute the determinant and the rank of a generic (symmetric, or anti-symmetric) matrix in the fixed variety, yielding information about the generic singular locus of the corresponding bilinear form.
On Cycles in Random Graphs
We consider the geometric random (GR) graph on the $d-$dimensional torus with the $L_σ$ distance measure ($1 \leq σ\leq \infty$). Our main result is an exact characterization of the probability that a particular labeled cycle exists in this random graph. For $σ= 2$ and $σ= \infty$, we use this characterization to derive a series which evaluates to the cycle probability. We thus obtain an exact formula for the expected number of Hamilton cycles in the random graph (when $σ= \infty$ and $σ= 2$). We also consider the adjacency matrix of the random graph and derive a recurrence relation for the expected values of the elementary symmetric functions evaluated on the eigenvalues (and thus the determinant) of the adjacency matrix, and a recurrence relation for the expected value of the permanent of the adjacency matrix. The cycle probability features prominently in these recurrence relations. We calculate these quantities for geometric random graphs (in the $σ= 2$ and $σ= \infty$ case) with up to $20$ vertices, and compare them with the corresponding quantities for the Erdös-Rényi (ER) random graph with the same edge probabilities. The calculations indicate that the threshold for rapid growth in the number of Hamilton cycles (as well as that for rapid growth in the permanent of the adjacency matrix) in the GR graph is lower than in the ER graph. However, as the number of vertices $n$ increases, the difference between the GR and ER thresholds reduces, and in both cases, the threshold $\sim \log(n)/n$. Also, we observe that the expected determinant can take very large values. This throws some light on the question of the maximal determinant of symmetric $0/1$ matrices.

In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. Here we consider $\frac{(aq;q)_{n}}{(abq^{2};q)_{n}}$ as a q-analogue of Catalan numbers $C_{n}=\frac1{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$, which is known as the moments of the little q-Jacobi polynomials. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. We also consider a q-analogue of Schröder Hankel determinants, and give a new proof of Moztkin Hankel determinants using an addition formula for ${}_2F_{1}$.

Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have computed the determinant of a matrix associated to a Conway-Coxeter frieze pattern. We generalise their result to the corresponding frieze pattern of cluster variables arising from the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra of type A. We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of this result in terms of certain configurations of indecomposable objects in the root category of type A.

We consider the homogeneous components U_r of the map on R = k[x,y,z]/(x^A, y^B, z^C) that multiplies by x + y + z. We prove a relationship between the Smith normal forms of submatrices of an arbitrary Toeplitz matrix using Schur polynomials, and use this to give a relationship between Smith normal form entries of U_r. We also give a bijective proof of an identity proven by J. Li and F. Zanello equating the determinant of the middle homogeneous component U_r when (A, B, C) = (a + b, a + c, b + c) to the number of plane partitions in an a by b by c box. Finally, we prove that, for certain vector subspaces of R, similar identities hold relating determinants to symmetry classes of plane partitions, in particular classes 3, 6, and 8.
