We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are: 1) a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part; 2) a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions; 3) a proof of the positivity of double Edelman-Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman-Greene and Lascoux-Schutzenberger; 4) the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm; 5) the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case; 6) equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian; 7) homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.
Skew divided difference operators in the Nichols algebra associated to a finite Coxeter group
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system with root system $R$ and with set of positive roots $R^+$. For $α\in R$, $v,w\in W$, we denote by $\partial_α$, $\partial_w$ and $\partial_{w/v}$ the divided difference operators and skew divided difference operators acting on the coinvariant algebra of $W$. Generalizing the work of Liu, we prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In fact, we prove the stronger and analogous statement in the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model for Schubert calculus on $W$ after Bazlov. We draw consequences of this theorem on saturated chains in the Bruhat order, and partially treat the question when $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a monomial in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In an appendix, we study related combinatorics on shuffle elements and Bruhat intervals of length two.

In this article, we prove a tableau formula for the double Grothendieck polynomials associated to $321$-avoiding permutations. The proof is based on the compatibility of the formula with the $K$-theoretic divided difference operators.

We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

We show that several families of polynomials defined via fillings of diagrams satisfy linear recurrences under a natural operation on the shape of the diagram. We focus on key polynomials, (also known as Demazure characters), and Demazure atoms. The same technique can be applied to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and dual Grothendieck polynomials.
The motivation behind this is that such recurrences are strongly connected with other nice properties, such as interpretations in terms of lattice points in polytopes and divided difference operators.

For permutations $v,w \in \mathfrak S_n$, Macdonald defines the skew divided difference operators $\partial_{w/v}$ as the unique linear operators satisfying $\partial_w(PQ) = \sum_v v(\partial_{w/v}P) \cdot \partial_vQ$ for all polynomials $P$ and $Q$. We prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ has a positive expression in terms of divided difference operators $\partial_{ij}$ for $i<j$. In fact, we prove that the analogous result holds in the Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$, which settles a conjecture of Kirillov.

We construct a divided difference operator using GKM theory. This generalizes the classical divided difference operator for the cohomology of the complete flag variety. This construction proves a special case of a recent conjecture of Shareshian and Wachs. Our methods are entirely combinatorial and algebraic, and rely heavily on the combinatorics of root systems and Bruhat order.
K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums

We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

We have developed a patch implementing multivariate polynomials seen as a multi-base algebra. The patch is to be released into the software Sage and can already be found within the Sage-Combinat distribution. One can use our patch to define a polynomial in a set of indexed variables and expand it into a linear basis of the multivariate polynomials. So far, we have the Schubert polynomials, the Key polynomials of types A, B, C, or D, the Grothendieck polynomials and the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. One can also use a double set of variables and work with specific double-linear bases like the double Schubert polynomials or double Grothendieck polynomials. Our implementation is based on a definition of the basis using divided difference operators and one can also define new bases using these operators.
An 4n-point Interpolation Formula for Certain Polynomials
By using some techniques of the divided difference operators, we establish an 4n-point interpolation formula. Certain polynomials, such as Jackson's _8φ_7 terminating summation formula, are special cases of this formula. Based on Krattenthaler's identity, we also give Jackson's formula a determinantal interpretation.
Divided difference operators for partial flag varieties
Divided difference operators are degree-reducing operators on the cohomology of flag varieties that are used to compute algebraic invariants of the ring (for instance, structure constants). We identify divided difference operators on the equivariant cohomology of G/P for arbitrary partial flag varieties of arbitrary Lie type, and show how to use them in the ordinary cohomology of G/P. We provide three applications. The first shows that all Schubert classes of partial flag varieties can be generated from a sequence of divided difference operators on the highest-degree Schubert class. The second is a generalization of Billey's formula for the localizations of equivariant Schubert classes of flag varieties to arbitrary partial flag varieties. The third gives a choice of Schubert polynomials for partial flag varieties as well as an explicit formula for each. We focus on the example of maximal Grassmannians, including Grassmannians of k-planes in a complex n-dimensional vector space.
Equivariant structure constants for ordinary and weighted projective space
We compute the integral torus-equivariant cohomology ring for weighted projective space for two different torus actions by embedding the cohomology in a sum of polynomial rings $\oplus_{i=0}^n \Z[t_1, t_2,..., t_n]$. One torus action gives a result complementing that of Bahri, Franz, and Ray. For the other torus action, each basis class for weighted projective space is a multiple of the basis class for ordinary projective space; we identify each multiple explicitly. We also give a simple formula for the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology ring of ordinary projective space in terms of the basis of Schubert classes, as a sequence of divided difference operators applied to a specific polynomial.

We establish Taylor series expansions in rational (and elliptic) function bases using E. Rains' elliptic extension of the Askey-Wilson divided difference operator. The expansion theorem we consider extends M.E.H. Ismail's expansion for the Askey-Wilson monomial basis. Three immediate applications (essentially already due to Rains) include simple proofs of Frenkel and Turaev's elliptic extensions of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation and of Bailey's 10-phi-9 transformation, and the computation of the connection coefficients of Spiridonov's elliptic extension of Rahman's biorthogonal rational functions. We adumbrate other examples including the nonterminating extension of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation and a quadratic expansion.

This survey paper describes two geometric representations of the permutation group using the tools of toric topology. These actions are extremely useful for computational problems in Schubert calculus. The (torus) equivariant cohomology of the flag variety is constructed using the combinatorial description of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson, discussed in detail. Two permutation representations on equivariant and ordinary cohomology are identified in terms of irreducible representations of the permutation group. We show how to use the permutation actions to construct divided difference operators and to give formulas for some localizations of certain equivariant classes.
This paper includes several new results, in particular a new proof of the Chevalley-Monk formula and a proof that one of the natural permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of the flag variety is the regular representation. Many examples, exercises, and open questions are provided.

We study an action of the skew divided difference operators on the Schubert polynomials and give an explicit formula for structural constants for the Schubert polynomials in terms of certain weighted paths in the Bruhat order on the symmetric group. We also prove that, under certain assumptions, the skew divided difference operators transform the Schubert polynomials into polynomials with positive integer coefficients.
Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).

This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over C and over C[t_1, t_2,...,t_n]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators studied by Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.
A scheme related to the Brauer loop model

We introduce the_Brauer loop scheme_ E := {M in M_N(C) : M\cp M = 0}, where \cp is a certain degeneration of the ordinary matrix product. Its components of top dimension, floor(N^2/2), correspond to involutions πin S_N having one or no fixed points. In the case N even, this scheme contains the upper-upper scheme from [Knutson '04] as a union of (N/2)! of its components. One of those is a degeneration of the_commuting variety_ of pairs of commuting matrices.
The_Brauer loop model_ is a quantum integrable stochastic process introduced in [de Gier--Nienhuis '04], and some of the entries of its Perron-Frobenius eigenvector were observed (conjecturally) to match the degrees of the components of the upper-upper scheme. We extend this, with proof, to_all_ the entries: they are the degrees of the components of the Brauer loop scheme.
Our proof of this follows the program outlined in [Di Francesco--Zinn-Justin '04]. In that paper, the entries of the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector were generalized from numbers to polynomials, which allowed them to be calculated inductively using divided difference operators. We relate these polynomials to the multidegrees of the components of the Brauer loop scheme, defined using an evident torus action on E. In particular, we obtain a formula for the degree of the commuting variety, previously calculated up to 4x4 matrices.
