Applications of the Brauer complex: card shuffling, permutation statistics, and dynamical systems

By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple conjugacy classes of a finite group of Lie type to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Picking a semisimple class uniformly at random yields a probability measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Using the Brauer complex, it is proved that this measure agrees with a second measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group induced by a construction of Cellini using the affine Weyl group. Formulas for Cellini's measure in type $A$ are found. This leads to new models of card shuffling and has interesting combinatorial and number theoretic consequences. An analysis of type C gives another solution to a problem of Rogers in dynamical systems: the enumeration of unimodal permutations by cycle structure. The proof uses the factorization theory of palindromic polynomials over finite fields. Contact is made with symmetric function theory.

We consider the sum of dichromatic polynomials over non-separable rooted planar maps, an interesting special case of which is the enumeration of such maps. We present some known results and derive new ones. The general problem is equivalent to the $q$-state Potts model randomized over such maps. Like the regular ferromagnetic lattice models, it has a first-order transition when $q$ is greater than a critical value $q_c$, but $q_c$ is much larger - about 72 instead of 4.

We compute the weighted enumeration of plane partitions contained in a given box with complementation symmetry where adding one half of an orbit of cubes and removing the other half of the orbit changes the weight by -1 as proposed by Kuperberg. We use nonintersecting lattice path families to accomplish this for transpose-complementary, cyclically symmetric transpose-complementary and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions. For symmetric transpose-complementary and self-complementary plane partitions we get partial results. We also describe Kuperberg's proof for the case of cyclically symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.

We present some old and new results in the enumeration of random walks in one dimension, mostly developed in works of enumerative combinatorics. The relation between the trace of the $n$-th power of a tridiagonal matrix and the enumeration of weighted paths of $n$ steps allows an easier combinatorial enumeration of the paths. It also seems promising for the theory of tridiagonal random matrices .
A non-automatic (!) application of Gosper's algorithm evaluates a determinant from tiling enumeration

We evaluate the determinant $\det_{1\leq i,j\leq n}(\binom{x+y+j}{x-i+2j}-\binom{x+y+j}{x+i+2j})$, which gives the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with cut off corners. A particularly interesting feature of this evaluation is that it requires the proof of a certain hypergeometric identity which we accomplish by using Gosper's algorithm in a non-automatic fashion.

Enumeration of chord diagrams
We determine the number of nonequivalent chord diagrams of order $n$ under the action of two groups, $C_{2n}$, a cyclic group of order $2n$, and $D_{2n}$, a dihedral group of order $4n$. Asymptotic formulas are also established.

In a previous article [math.CO/9712207], we derived the alternating-sign matrix (ASM) theorem from the Izergin-Korepin determinant for a partition function for square ice with domain wall boundary. Here we show that the same argument enumerates three other symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices: VSASMs (vertically symmetric ASMs), even HTSASMs (half-turn-symmetric ASMs), and even QTSASMs (quarter-turn-symmetric ASMs). The VSASM enumeration was conjectured by Mills; the others by Robbins [math.CO/0008045]. We introduce several new types of ASMs: UASMs (ASMs with a U-turn side), UUASMs (two U-turn sides), OSASMs (off-diagonally symmetric ASMs), OOSASMs (off-diagonally, off-antidiagonally symmetric), and UOSASMs (off-diagonally symmetric with U-turn sides). UASMs generalize VSASMs, while UUASMs generalize VHSASMs (vertically and horizontally symmetric ASMs) and another new class, VHPASMs (vertically and horizontally perverse). OSASMs, OOSASMs, and UOSASMs are related to the remaining symmetry classes of ASMs, namely DSASMs (diagonally symmetric), DASASMs (diagonally, anti-diagonally symmetric), and TSASMs (totally symmetric ASMs). We enumerate several of these new classes, and we provide several 2-enumerations and 3-enumerations.
Our main technical tool is a set of multi-parameter determinant and Pfaffian formulas generalizing the Izergin-Korepin determinant for ASMs and the Tsuchiya determinant for UASMs [solv-int/9804010]. We evaluate specializations of the determinants and Pfaffians using the factor exhaustion method.
Valleyless Sequences
Valleyless sequences of finite length $n$ and maximum entry $k$ occur in tree enumeration problems and provide an interesting correspondence between permutations and compositions. In this paper we introduce the notion of \emph {valleyless} sequences, explore the correspondence and enumerate them using the method of generating functions.

We study the combinatorics of ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of $sl(n+1,\Bbb C)$. We provide an inductive method for calculating the class of nilpotence of these ideals and formulas for the number of ideals having a given class of nilpotence. We study the relationships between these results and the combinatorics of Dyck paths, based upon a remarkable bijection between ad-nilpotent ideals and Dyck paths. Finally, we propose a (q,t)-analogue of the Catalan number $C_n$. These (q,t)-Catalan numbers count on the one hand ad-nilpotent ideals with respect to dimension and class of nilpotence, and on the other hand admit interpretations in terms of natural statistics on Dyck paths.

We exhibit a bijection between 132-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths. Using this bijection, it is shown that all the recently discovered results on generating functions for 132-avoiding permutations with a given number of occurrences of the pattern $12... k$ follow directly from old results on the enumeration of Motzkin paths, among which is a continued fraction result due to Flajolet. As a bonus, we use these observations to derive further results and a precise asymptotic estimate for the number of 132-avoiding permutations of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $r$ occurrences of the pattern $12... k$. Second, we exhibit a bijection between 123-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths. When combined with a result of Roblet and Viennot, this bijection allows us to express the generating function for 123-avoiding permutations with a given number of occurrences of the pattern $(k-1)(k-2)... 1k$ in form of a continued fraction and to derive further results for these permutations.

We find a generating function expressed as a continued fraction that enumerates ordered trees by the number of vertices at different levels. Several Catalan problems are mapped to an ordered-tree problem and their generating functions also expressed as a continued fraction. Among these problems is the enumeration of (132)-pattern avoiding permutations that have a given number of increasing patterns of length k. This extends and illuminates a result of Robertson, Wilf and Zeilberger for the case k=3.

We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such specialization gives a proof of a conjecture of Stembridge on a certain weighted count of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. The tools employed in our proofs are nonstandard applications of the theory of nonintersecting lattice paths and determinant evaluations. In particular, we evaluate the determinants $\det_{0\le i,j\le n-1}\big(\om δ_{ij}+\binom {m+i+j}j\big)$, where $\om$ is any 6th root of unity. These determinant evaluations are variations of a famous result due to Andrews (Invent. Math. 53 (1979), 193--225), which corresponds to $\om=1$.
Graph Ramsey games
We consider combinatorial avoidance and achievement games based on graph Ramsey theory: The players take turns in coloring still uncolored edges of a graph G, each player being assigned a distinct color, choosing one edge per move. In avoidance games, completing a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to another graph A leads to immediate defeat or is forbidden and the first player that cannot move loses. In the avoidance+ variants, both players are free to choose more than one edge per move. In achievement games, the first player that completes a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to A wins. Erdos & Selfridge (1973) were the first to identify some tractable subcases of these games, followed by a large number of further studies. We complete these investigations by settling the complexity of all unrestricted cases: We prove that general graph Ramsey avoidance, avoidance+, and achievement games and several variants thereof are PSPACE-complete. We ultra-strongly solve some nontrivial instances of graph Ramsey avoidance games that are based on symmetric binary Ramsey numbers and provide strong evidence that all other cases based on symmetric binary Ramsey numbers are effectively intractable.

We present a detailed study of the combinatorial interpretation of matrix integrals, including the examples of tessellations of arbitrary genera, and loop models on random surfaces. After reviewing their methods of solution, we apply these to the study of various folding problems arising from physics, including: the meander (or polymer folding) problem ``enumeration of all topologically inequivalent closed non-intersecting plane curves intersecting a line through a given number of points" and a fluid membrane folding problem reformulated as that of ``enumerating all vertex-tricolored triangulations of arbitrary genus, with given numbers of vertices of either color".
Variants of Schroeder Dissections
Some formulae are given for the enumeration of certain types of dissections of the convex (n+2)-gon by non-crossing diagonals. The classical Schroeder and Motzkin numbers are addressed using a cataloguing tool, the "reversive symbol". The elementary details are referred to three Web addresses.

Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.

This document is built around a list of thirty-two problems in enumeration of matchings, the first twenty of which were presented in a lecture at MSRI in the fall of 1996. I begin with a capsule history of the topic of enumeration of matchings. The twenty original problems, with commentary, comprise the bulk of the article. I give an account of the progress that has been made on these problems as of this writing, and include pointers to both the printed and on-line literature; roughly half of the original twenty problems were solved by participants in the MSRI Workshop on Combinatorics, their students, and others, between 1996 and 1999. The article concludes with a dozen new open problems. (Note: This article supersedes math.CO/9801060 and math.CO/9801061.)
