Lattice paths enumerations weighted by ascent lengths
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 349, Issue 2, 2026, Article 114783 • View PublicationBIB
Recent work of the author connected several parking function enumeration problems to enumerations of Catalan paths with respect to certain weight functions that are expressed in terms of the ascent lengths. Motivated by this, we generalise and solve analogous weighted enumeration problems for a large family of lattice paths and weight functions, and discuss their connections with other enumeration problems and OEIS entries.

In Search of a Hidden Curve
It has been noticed since around 2007 that certain enumeration problems can be solved when an analytic or algebraic curve is identified. This curve is the key to the problem. In these lectures, a few such examples are presented. One is a detailed account on counting simple Hurwitz numbers, explaining how the problem was solved by discovering this key curve. The formula for the curve allows us to write the generating functions of Hurwitz numbers in terms of polynomials. This unexpected polynomiality produces, as a byproduct, straightforward and short proofs of the Witten-Kontsevich theorem and the $λ_g$-theorem of Faber-Pandharipande. An analogous enumeration problem associated with Catalan numbers is also presented, which has a simpler feature in terms of analysis. The asymptotic behavior of counting leads this time to the Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces of smooth curves. We then discuss another enumeration problem, the Apéry sequences. The quest of identifying the hidden curve for this case remains open. These curves, also known as spectral curves, are discovered via solving ordinary differential equations. The counting problem of geometric origin associated with the genus 0, one marked point case is encoded in the spectral curve. It is explained that going from the $(g,n)=(0,1)$-case to arbitrary $(g,n)$ is a process of quantization of the spectral curve. This perspective of quantization is discussed in a geometric setting, when the differential equations are linear with holomorphic coefficients, in terms of Higgs bundles, opers, and Gaiotto's conformal limit construction. In this context, however, there are no counting problems behind the scene.

Lattice random walks and quantum A-period conjecture
Published in SciPost Phys. 19, 053 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
We derive explicit closed-form expressions for the generating function $C_N(A)$, which enumerates classical closed random walks on square and triangular lattices with $N$ steps and a signed area $A$, characterized by the number of moves in each hopping direction. This enumeration problem is mapped to the trace of powers of anisotropic Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and is connected to the cluster coefficients of exclusion particles: exclusion strength parameter $g = 2$ for square lattice walks, and a mixture of $g = 1$ and $g = 2$ for triangular lattice walks. By leveraging the intrinsic link between the Hofstadter model and high energy physics, we propose a conjecture connecting the above signed area enumeration $C_N(A)$ in statistical mechanics to the quantum A-period of associated toric Calabi-Yau threefold in topological string theory: square lattice walks correspond to local $\mathbb{F}_0$ geometry, while triangular lattice walks are associated with local $\mathcal{B}_3$.

Asymptotic expansions for the reciprocal Hardy-Littlewood logarithmic integrals
Defining a family of recurrences, we generalize Comtet's formula for the generating function of the enumeration of indecomposable permutations. Consequently, we generalize Panaitopol's asymptotic expansion for the prime counting function, obtaining asymptotic expansions salient to the first Hardy-Littlewood conjecture.
$\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers from refined topological recursion
We prove that single $G$-weighted $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers with internal faces are computed by refined topological recursion on a rational spectral curve, for certain rational weights $G$. Consequently, the $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz generating function analytically continues to a rational curve. In particular, our results cover the cases of $\mathfrak{b}$-monotone Hurwitz numbers, and the enumeration of maps and bipartite maps (with internal faces) on non-oriented surfaces. As an application, we prove that the correlators of the Gaussian, Jacobi and Laguerre $β$-ensembles are computed by refined topological recursion.

Jones--Wenzl projections of type $D$ and Dyck tilings
We study the relation between a coefficient of an element of the Jones--Wenzl projection in the Temperley--Lieb algebra of type $D$ and an enumeration of Dyck tilings. The coefficient can be non-recursively expressed as an enumerative generating function of Dyck tilings by considering the generalized Hermite histories, which we call bi-colored vertical Hermite histories, on the tilings.

The number of dissociation sets in connected graphs
Extremal problems related to the enumeration of graph substructures, such as independent sets, matchings, and induced matchings, have become a prominent area of research with the advancement of graph theory. A subset of vertices is called a dissociation set if it induces a subgraph with vertex degree at most $1$, making it a natural generalization of these previously studied substructures. In this paper, we present efficient tools to strictly increase the number of dissociation sets in a connected graph. Furthermore, we establish that the maximum number of dissociation sets among all connected graphs of order $n$ is given by \begin{align*} \begin{cases} 2^{n-1}+(n+3)\cdot 2^{\frac{n-5}{2}}, &~ {\rm if}~ n~{\rm is}~{\rm odd};\\ 2^{n-1}+(n+6)\cdot 2^{\frac{n-6}{2}}, &~ {\rm if}~ n~{\rm is}~{\rm even}. \end{cases} \end{align*} Additionally, we determine the achievable upper bound on the number of dissociation sets in a tree of order $n$ and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs as an intermediate result. Finally, we identify the unicyclic graph that is the candidate for having the second largest number of dissociation sets among all connected graphs.
Sparsest cut and eigenvalue multiplicities on low degree Abelian Cayley graphs
Whether or not the Sparsest Cut problem admits an efficient $O(1)$-approximation algorithm is a fundamental algorithmic question with connections to geometry and the Unique Games Conjecture. Revisiting spectral algorithms for Sparsest Cut, we present a novel, simple algorithm that combines eigenspace enumeration with a new algorithm for the Cut Improvement problem. The runtime of our algorithm is parametrized by a quantity that we call the solution dimension $\text{SD}_\varepsilon(G)$: the smallest $k$ such that the subspace spanned by the first $k$ Laplacian eigenvectors contains all but $\varepsilon$ fraction of a sparsest cut. Our algorithm matches the guarantees of prior methods based on the threshold-rank paradigm, while also extending beyond them. To illustrate this, we study its performance on low degree Cayley graphs over Abelian groups -- canonical examples of graphs with poor expansion properties. We prove that low degree Abelian Cayley graphs have small solution dimension, yielding an algorithm that computes a $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation to the uniform Sparsest Cut of a degree-$d$ Cayley graph over an Abelian group of size $n$ in time $n^{O(1)}\cdot\exp(d/\varepsilon)^{O(d)}$. Along the way to bounding the solution dimension of Abelian Cayley graphs, we analyze their sparse cuts and spectra, proving that the collection of $O(1)$-approximate sparsest cuts has an $\varepsilon$-net of size $\exp(d/\varepsilon)^{O(d)}$ and that the multiplicity of $λ_2$ is bounded by $2^{O(d)}$. The latter bound is tight and improves on a previous bound of $2^{O(d^2)}$ by Lee and Makarychev.
Enumeration of interval-closed sets via Motzkin paths and quarter-plane walks
We find a generating function for interval-closed sets of the product of two chains poset by constructing a bijection to certain bicolored Motzkin paths. We also find a functional equation for the generating function of interval-closed sets of truncated rectangle posets, including the type $A$ root poset, by constructing a bijection to certain quarter-plane walks.

Introducing irrational enumeration: analytic combinatorics for objects of irrational size
We extend the scope of analytic combinatorics to classes containing objects that have irrational sizes. The generating function for such a class is a power series that admits irrational exponents (which we call a Ribenboim series). A transformation then yields a generalised Dirichlet series from which the asymptotics of the coefficients can be extracted by singularity analysis using an appropriate Tauberian theorem. In practice, the asymptotics can often be determined directly from the original generating function. We illustrate the technique with a variety of applications, including tilings with tiles of irrational area, ordered integer factorizations, lattice walks enumerated by Euclidean length, and plane trees with vertices of irrational size. We also explore phase transitions in the asymptotics of families of irrational combinatorial classes.
Whitney Numbers of Rank-Metric Lattices and Code Enumeration
We investigate the Whitney numbers of the first kind of rank-metric lattices, which are closely linked to the open problem of enumerating rank-metric codes having prescribed parameters. We apply methods from the theory of hyperovals and linear sets to compute these Whitney numbers for infinite families of rank-metric lattices. As an application of our results, we prove asymptotic estimates on the density function of certain rank-metric codes that have been conjectured in previous work.

An Extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem
In combinatorics, Pólya's Enumeration Theorem is a powerful tool for solving a wide range of counting problems, including the enumeration of groups, graphs, and chemical compounds. In this paper, we present an extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem. As an application, we derive a formula that expresses the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates (where $n\leq m$) as a variant of the cycle index polynomial of the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$. This result resolves a problem posed by Amdeberhan in 2012.

The $S_n$-equivariant Euler characteristic of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$
We compute the $S_n$-equivariant topological Euler characteristic of the Kontsevich moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$. Letting $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}^{\mathrm{nrt}}(\mathbb{P}^r, d) \subset \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}(¶^r, d)$ denote the subspace of maps from curves without rational tails, we solve for the motive of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$ in terms of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}^{\mathrm{nrt}}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$ and plethysm with a genus-zero contribution determined by Getzler and Pandharipande. Fixing a generic $\mathbb{C}^\star$-action on $\mathbb{P}^r$, we derive a closed formula for the Euler characteristic of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1, n}^{\mathrm{nrt}}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)^{\mathbb{C}^\star}$ as an $S_n$-equivariant virtual mixed Hodge structure, which leads to our main formula for the Euler characteristic of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$. Our approach connects the geometry of torus actions on Kontsevich moduli spaces with symmetric functions in Coxeter types $A$ and $B$, as well as the enumeration of graph colourings with prescribed symmetry. We also prove a structural result about the $S_n$-equivariant Euler characteristic of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}(\mathbb{P}^r, d)$ in arbitrary genus.

On Enumerating Higher Bruhat Orders Through Deletion and Contraction
The higher Bruhat orders $\mathcal{B}(n,k)$ were introduced by Manin-Schechtman to study discriminantal hyperplane arrangements and subsequently studied by Ziegler, who connected $\mathcal{B}(n,k)$ to oriented matroids. In this paper, we consider the enumeration of $\mathcal{B}(n,k)$ and improve upon Balko's asymptotic lower and upper bounds on $|\mathcal{B}(n,k)|$ by a factor exponential in $k$. A proof of Ziegler's formula for $|\mathcal{B}(n,n-3)|$ is given and a bijection between a certain subset of $\mathcal{B}(n,n-4)$ and totally symmetric plane partitions is proved. Central to our proofs are deletion and contraction operations for the higher Bruhat orders, defined in analogy with matroids. Dual higher Bruhat orders are also introduced, and we construct isomorphisms relating the higher Bruhat orders and their duals. Additionally, weaving functions are introduced to generalize Felsner's encoding of elements in $\mathcal{B}(n,2)$ to all higher Bruhat orders $\mathcal{B}(n,k)$.

Homometric subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ with cardinality 5: classification and enumeration
Two subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ are said to be homometric if they have the same multiset of pairwise cyclic (i.e., Lee) distances. Homometric subsets necessarily have the same cardinality, say $k$. In this paper, for all positive integers $n$, we classify the homometric subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ with cardinality $k=5$ (modulo cyclic shifts and reflections). Our classification consists of six families of homometric pairs, and one family of homometric triples. We also give a closed-form generating function that counts these homometric pairs and triples for all $n$. As an immediate application of our result, one obtains an explicit criterion for the solvability of the crystallographic phase retrieval problem, in the setting of binary signals supported on $k=5$ many atoms. The same problem for $k \leq 4$ was partially solved by Erdős and ultimately settled by Rosenblatt-Berman (1984), who noted that for $k \geq 5$ the problem seems very difficult. Equivalently, in the language of microtonal music theory, our result solves the open problem of classifying Z-related pentachords.

Local limit theorem for joint subgraph counts
Extending a previous result of the first two authors, we prove a local limit theorem for the joint distribution of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. This limit can be described as a nonlinear transformation of a multivariate normal distribution, where the components of the multivariate normal correspond to the graph factors of Janson. As an application, we show a number of results concerning the existence and enumeration of proportional graphs and related concepts, answering various questions of Janson and collaborators in the affirmative.

Totally nonnegative matrices, chain enumeration and zeros of polynomials
We prove that any lower unitriangular and totally nonnegative matrix gives rise to a family of polynomials with only real zeros. This has consequences for problems in several areas of mathematics. We use it to develop a general theory for chain enumeration in posets and zeros of chain polynomials. The results obtained extend and unify results of the first author, Brenti, Welker and Athanasiadis. In the process we define a notion of $h$-vectors for a large class of posets which generalize the notions of $h$-vectors associated to simplicial and cubical complexes. A consequence of our methods is a characterization of the convex hull of all characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arrangements of fixed dimension and over a fixed finite field. This may be seen as a refinement of the Critical Problem of Crapo and Rota. We also use the methods developed to answer an open problem posed by Forgács and Tran on the real-rootedness of polynomials arising from certain bivariate rational functions.

Generalized snake posets, order polytopes, and lattice-point enumeration
Building from the work of von Bell et al.~(2022), we study the Ehrhart theory of order polytopes arising from a special class of distributive lattices, known as generalized snake posets. We present arithmetic properties satisfied by the Ehrhart polynomials of order polytopes of generalized snake posets along with a computation of their Gorenstein index. Then we give a combinatorial description of the chain polynomial of generalized snake posets as a direction to obtain the $h^*$-polynomial of their associated order polytopes. Additionally, we present explicit formulae for the $h^*$-polynomial of the order polytopes of the two extremal examples of generalized snake posets, namely the ladder and regular snake poset. We then provide a recursive formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of any generalized snake posets and show that the $h^*$-vectors are entry-wise bounded by the $h^*$-vectors of the two extremal cases.

Enumeration of crossings in two-step puzzles
We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding alternating sign matrices: An asymptotic dichotomy
We completely classify the asymptotic behavior of the number of alternating sign matrices classically avoiding a single permutation pattern, in the sense of [Johansson and Linusson 2007]. In particular, we give a uniform proof of an exponential upper bound for the number of alternating sign matrices classically avoiding one of eleven particular patterns, and a super-exponential lower bound for all other single-pattern avoidance classes. We also show that for any fixed integer $k$, there is an exponential upper bound for the number of alternating sign matrices that classically avoid any single permutation pattern and contain precisely $k$ negative ones. Finally, we prove that there must be at most $3$ negative ones in an alternating sign matrix which classically avoids both $2143$ and $3412$, and we exactly enumerate the number of them with precisely $3$ negative ones.
