An Alon-Boppana theorem for powered graphs and generalized Ramanujan graphs
The r-th power of a graph modifies a graph by connecting every vertex pair within distance r. This paper gives a generalization of the Alon-Boppana Theorem for the r-th power of graphs, including irregular graphs. This leads to a generalized notion of Ramanujan graphs, those for which the powered graph has a spectral gap matching the derived Alon-Boppana bound. In particular, we show that certain graphs that are not good expanders due to local irregularities, such as Erdos-Renyi random graphs, become almost Ramanujan once powered. A different generalization of Ramanujan graphs can also be obtained from the nonbacktracking operator. We next argue that the powering operator gives a more robust notion than the latter: Sparse Erdos-Renyi random graphs with an adversary modifying a subgraph of log(n)^c$ vertices are still almost Ramanujan in the powered sense, but not in the nonbacktracking sense. As an application, this gives robust community testing for different block models.
Threshold for weak saturation stability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the weak $K_s$-saturation number of the Erdős--Rényi random graph $\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p)$, denoted by $\mathrm{wsat}(\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p), K_s)$, where $K_s$ is the complete graph on $s$ vertices. Korándi and Sudakov in 2017 proved that the weak $K_s$-saturation number of $K_n$ is stable, in the sense that it remains the same after removing edges with constant probability. In this paper, we prove that there exists a threshold for this stability property and give upper and lower bounds on the threshold. This generalizes the result of Korándi and Sudakov. A general upper bound for $\mathrm{wsat}(\mathbbmsl{G}(n, p), K_s)$ is also provided.

Independent Sets of Random Trees and of Sparse Random Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An independent set of size $k$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is a set of $k$ vertices of the graph, no two of which are connected by an edge. Let $x_{k}(G)$ be the number of independent sets of size $k$ in the graph $G$ and let $α(G)=\max\{k\geq0\colon x_{k}(G)\neq0\}$. In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdös asked if the independent set sequence $x_{0}(G),x_{1}(G),\ldots,x_{α(G)}(G)$ of a tree is unimodal (the sequence goes up and then down). This problem is still open. In 2006, Levit and Mandrescu showed that the last third of the independent set sequence of a tree is decreasing. We show that the first 46.8\% of the independent set sequence of a random tree is increasing with (exponentially) high probability as the number of vertices goes to infinity. So, the question of Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdös is ``four-fifths true'', with high probability. We also show unimodality of the independent set sequence of Erdös-Renyi random graphs, when the expected degree of a single vertex is large (with (exponentially) high probability as the number of vertices in the graph goes to infinity, except for a small region near the mode). A weaker result is shown for random regular graphs. The structure of independent sets of size $k$ as $k$ varies is of interest in probability, statistical physics, combinatorics, and computer science.

On $r$-to-$p$ norms of random matrices with nonnegative entries: Asymptotic normality and $\ell_\infty$-bounds for the maximizer
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an $n\times n$ matrix $A_n$, the $r\to p$ operator norm is defined as $$\|A_n\|_{r\to p}:= \sup_{\mathbf{x}\in\mathbb{R}^n:\|\mathbf{x} \|_r\leq 1 } \|A_n\mathbf{x} \|_p\quad\text{for}\quad r,p\geq 1.$$ For different choices of $r$ and $p$, this norm corresponds to key quantities that arise in diverse applications including matrix condition number estimation, clustering of data, and construction of oblivious routing schemes in transportation networks. This article considers $r\to p$ norms of symmetric random matrices with nonnegative entries, including adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi random graphs, matrices with positive sub-Gaussian entries, and certain sparse matrices. For $1<p\leq r<\infty$, the asymptotic normality, as $n\to\infty$, of the appropriately centered and scaled norm $\|A_n\|_{r\to p}$ is established. When $p \geq 2$, this is shown to imply asymptotic normality of the solution to the $\ell_p$ quadratic maximization problem, also known as the $\ell_p$ Grothendieck problem. Furthermore, a sharp $\ell_\infty$-approximation bound for the unique maximizing vector in the definition of $\|A_n\|_{r\to p}$ is obtained, and may be viewed as an $\ell_\infty$-stability result of the maximizer under random perturbations of the matrix with mean entries. This result is in fact shown to hold for a broad class of deterministic sequences of matrices having certain asymptotic expansion properties. The results obtained can be viewed as a generalization of the seminal results of Füredi and Komlós (1981) on asymptotic normality of the largest singular value of a class of symmetric random matrices. In the general case with $1<p\leq r< \infty$, spectral methods are no longer applicable, and so a new approach is developed involving a refined convergence analysis of a nonlinear power method and a perturbation bound on the maximizing vector, which may be of independent interest.
The devil's staircase for chip-firing on random graphs and on graphons
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the behavior of the activity of the parallel chip-firing upon increasing the number of chips on an Erdős--Rényi random graph. We show that in various situations the resulting activity diagrams converge to a devil's staircase as we increase the number of vertices. Our method is to generalize the parallel chip-firing to graphons, and to prove a continuity result for the activity. We also show that the activity of a chip configuration on a graphon does not necessarily exist, but it does exist for every chip configuration on a large class of graphons.
Spectral Edge in Sparse Random Graphs: Upper and Lower Tail Large Deviations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the joint upper and lower tail large deviations of the edge eigenvalues of an Erdős-Rényi random graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$, in the regime of $p$ where the edge of the spectrum is no longer governed by global observables, such as the number of edges, but rather by localized statistics, such as high degree vertices. Going beyond the recent developments in mean-field approximations of related problems, this paper provides a comprehensive treatment of the large deviations of the spectral edge in this entire regime, which notably includes the well studied case of constant average degree. In particular, for $r \geq 1$ fixed, we pin down the asymptotic probability that the top $r$ eigenvalues are jointly greater/less than their typical values by multiplicative factors bigger/smaller than $1$, in the regime mentioned above. The proof for the upper tail relies on a novel structure theorem, obtained by building on estimates of Krivelevich and Sudakov (2003), followed by an iterative cycle removal process, which shows, conditional on the upper tail large deviation event, with high probability the graph admits a decomposition in to a disjoint union of stars and a spectrally negligible part. On the other hand, the key ingredient in the proof of the lower tail is a Ramsey-type result which shows that if the $K$-th largest degree of a graph is not atypically small (for some large $K$ depending on $r$), then either the top eigenvalue or the $r$-th largest eigenvalue is larger than that allowed by the lower tail event on the top $r$ eigenvalues, thus forcing a contradiction. The above arguments reduce the problems to developing a large deviation theory for the extremal degrees which could be of independent interest.

On the structural stability of random systems
Understanding which system structure can sustain stable dynamics is a fundamental step in the design and analysis of large scale dynamical systems. Towards this goal, we investigate here the structural stability of systems with a random structure. As is usually done, we describe the system's structure through a graph describing interactions between parts of the system, and we call a graph stable if it describe a structurally stable system, i.e., a system which can sustain stable dynamics. We then consider two Erdos-Renyi random graph models, and we obtain for each the probability that a graph sampled from these models is structurally stable.
The Power of Two Choices for Random Walks
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 31 (2022) 73-100 • View PublicationBIB
We apply the power-of-two-choices paradigm to a random walk on a graph: rather than moving to a uniform random neighbour at each step, a controller is allowed to choose from two independent uniform random neighbours. We prove that this allows the controller to significantly accelerate the hitting and cover times in several natural graph classes. In particular, we show that the cover time becomes linear in the number $n$ of vertices on discrete tori and bounded degree trees, of order $\mathcal{O}(n \log \log n)$ on bounded degree expanders, and of order $\mathcal{O}(n (\log \log n)^2)$ on the Erdős-Rényi random graph in a certain sparsely connected regime. We also consider the algorithmic question of computing an optimal strategy, and prove a dichotomy in efficiency between computing strategies for hitting and cover times.

A limit theorem for the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in random graphs
We initiate the study of local topology of random graphs. The high level goal is to characterize local "motifs" in graphs. In this paper, we consider what we call the layer-$r$ subgraphs for an input graph $G = (V,E)$: Specifically, the layer-$r$ subgraph at vertex $u \in V$, denoted by $G_{u; r}$, is the induced subgraph of $G$ over vertex set $Δ_{u}^{r}:= \left\{v \in V: d_G(u,v) = r \right\}$, where $d_G$ is shortest-path distance in $G$. Viewing a graph as a 1-dimensional simplicial complex, we then aim to study the $1$st Betti number of such subgraphs. Our main result is that the $1$st Betti number of layer-$1$ subgraphs in Erdős--Rényi random graphs $G(n,p)$ satisfies a central limit theorem.

On the probability that a random subtree is spanning
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the quantity $P(G)$ associated with a graph $G$ that is defined as the probability that a randomly chosen subtree of $G$ is spanning. Motivated by conjectures due to Chin, Gordon, MacPhee and Vincent on the behaviour of this graph invariant depending on the edge density, we establish first that $P(G)$ is bounded below by a positive constant provided that the minimum degree is bounded below by a linear function in the number of vertices. Thereafter, the focus is shifted to the classical Erdős-Rényi random graph model $G(n,p)$. It is shown that $P(G)$ converges in probability to $e^{-1/(ep_{\infty})}$ if $p \to p_{\infty} > 0$ and to $0$ if $p \to 0$.

On the upper tail problem for random hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erdős--Rényi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-probability that the number of copies of fixed subgraph $H$ in a sparse Erdős--Rényi random $k$-uniform hypergraph exceeds its expectation by a constant factor. This conjecture turns out to be significantly more intricate compared to the case for graphs. We verify our conjecture when the fixed subgraph $H$ being counted is a clique, as well as when $H$ is the 3-uniform 6-vertex 4-edge hypergraph consisting of alternating faces of an octahedron, where new techniques are required.

Extremal graphs with local covering conditions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We systematically study a natural problem in extremal graph theory, to minimize the number of edges in a graph with a fixed number of vertices, subject to a certain local condition: each vertex must be in a copy of a fixed graph $H$. We completely solve this problem when $H$ is a clique, as well as more generally when $H$ is any regular graph with degree at least about half its number of vertices. We also characterize the extremal graphs when $H$ is an Erdős-Rényi random graph. The extremal structures turn out to have the similar form as the conjectured extremal structures for a well-studied but elusive problem of similar flavor with local constraints: to maximize the number of copies of a fixed clique in graphs in which all degrees have a fixed upper bound.

Ramsey Goodness of Paths in Random Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a graph $G$ is Ramsey for $H_1$ versus $H_2$, and write $G \to (H_1,H_2)$, if every red-blue colouring of the edges of $G$ contains either a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$. In this paper we study the threshold for the event that the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(N,p)$ is Ramsey for a clique versus a path. We show that $$G\big( (1 + \varepsilon) rn,p \big) \to (K_{r+1},P_n)$$ with high probability if $p \gg n^{-2 / (r + 1)}$, and $$G\big( rn + t, p \big) \to (K_{r+1},P_n)$$ with high probability if $p \gg n^{-2 / (r + 2)}$ and $t \gg 1/p$. Both of these results are sharp (in different ways), since with high probability $G(Cn,p) \not\to (K_{r+1}, P_n)$ for any constant $C > 0$ if $p \ll n^{-2/(r + 1)}$, and $G(rn + t, p) \not\to (K_{r+1}, P_n)$ if $t \ll 1/p$, for any $0 < p \le 1$.
Random growth on a Ramanujan graph
The behavior of a certain random growth process is analyzed on arbitrary regular and non-regular graphs. Our argument is based on the Expander Mixing Lemma, which entails that the results are strongest for Ramanujan graphs, which asymptotically maximize the spectral gap. Further, we consider Erdős--Rényi random graphs and compare our theoretical results with computational experiments on flip graphs of point configurations. The latter is relevant for enumerating triangulations.

On breadth-first constructions of scaling limits of random graphs and random unicellular maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give alternate constructions of (i) the scaling limit of the uniform connected graphs with given fixed surplus, and (ii) the continuum random unicellular map (CRUM) of a given genus that start with a suitably tilted Brownian continuum random tree and make `horizontal' point identifications, at random heights, using the local time measures. Consequently, this can be seen as a continuum analogue of the breadth-first construction of a finite connected graph. In particular, this yields a breadth-first construction of the scaling limit of the critical Erdős-Rényi random graph which answers a question posed in [2]. As a consequence of this breadth-first construction we obtain descriptions of the radii, the distance profiles, and the two point functions of these spaces in terms of functionals of tilted Brownian excursions.

Spectrum for first-order properties of random hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of spectrum of first-order properties introduced by J. Spencer for Erdos-Renyi random graph is considered in relation to random uniform hypergraphs. We study properties of spectrum for first-order formulae with bounded quantifier depth and estimate the values of minimum and maximum points of this spectrum. We also consider the set of limit points of the spectrum and give a bound for its minimum value.

Minimum coprime graph labelings
A coprime labeling of a graph $G$ is a labeling of the vertices of $G$ with distinct integers from $1$ to $k$ such that adjacent vertices have coprime labels. The minimum coprime number of $G$ is the least $k$ for which such a labeling exists. In this paper, we determine the minimum coprime number for several well-studied classes of graphs, including the coronas of complete graphs with empty graphs and the joins of two paths. In particular, we resolve a conjecture of Seoud, El Sonbaty, and Mahran and two conjectures of Asplund and Fox. We also provide an asymptotic for the minimum coprime number of the Erdős-Rényi random graph.
Thresholds in random motif graphs
We introduce a natural generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph model in which random instances of a fixed motif are added independently. The binomial random motif graph $G(H,n,p)$ is the random (multi)graph obtained by adding an instance of a fixed graph $H$ on each of the copies of $H$ in the complete graph on $n$ vertices, independently with probability $p$. We establish that every monotone property has a threshold in this model, and determine the thresholds for connectivity, Hamiltonicity, the existence of a perfect matching, and subgraph appearance. Moreover, in the first three cases we give the analogous hitting time results; with high probability, the first graph in the random motif graph process that has minimum degree one (or two) is connected and contains a perfect matching (or Hamiltonian respectively).

Concentration inequalities in spaces of random configurations with positive Ricci curvatures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we prove an Azuma-Hoeffding-type inequality in several classical models of random configurations, including the Erdős-Rényi random graph models $G(n,p)$ and $G(n,M)$, the random $d$-out(in)-regular directed graphs, and the space of random permutations. The main idea is using Ollivier's work on the Ricci curvature of Markov chairs on metric spaces. Here we give a cleaner form of such concentration inequality in graphs. Namely, we show that for any Lipschitz function $f$ on any graph (equipped with an ergodic random walk and thus an invariant distribution $ν$) with Ricci curvature at least $κ>0$, we have \[ν\left( |f-E_νf| \geq t \right) \leq 2\exp\left( -\frac{t^2κ}{7} \right).\]

The scaling limit of a critical random directed graph
We consider the random directed graph $\vec{G}(n,p)$ with vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ in which each of the $n(n-1)$ possible directed edges is present independently with probability $p$. We are interested in the strongly connected components of this directed graph. A phase transition for the emergence of a giant strongly connected component is known to occur at $p = 1/n$, with critical window $p= 1/n + λn^{-4/3}$ for $λ\in \mathcal{R}$. We show that, within this critical window, the strongly connected components of $\vec{G}(n,p)$, ranked in decreasing order of size and rescaled by $n^{-1/3}$, converge in distribution to a sequence $(\mathcal{C}_1,\mathcal{C}_2,\ldots)$ of finite strongly connected directed multigraphs with edge lengths which are either 3-regular or loops. The convergence occurs the sense of an $\ell^1$ sequence metric for which two directed multigraphs are close if there are compatible isomorphisms between their vertex and edge sets which roughly preserve the edge-lengths. Our proofs rely on a depth-first exploration of the graph which enables us to relate the strongly connected components to a particular spanning forest of the undirected Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, whose scaling limit is well understood. We show that the limiting sequence $(\mathcal{C}_1,\mathcal{C}_2,\ldots)$ contains only finitely many components which are not loops. If we ignore the edge lengths, any fixed finite sequence of 3-regular strongly connected directed multigraphs occurs with positive probability.
