VC-Dimension of Hyperplanes over Finite Fields
Let $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ be the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field with $q$ elements. For a subset $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^d$ and a fixed nonzero $t\in \mathbb{F}_q$, let $\mathcal{H}_t(E)=\{h_y: y\in E\}$, where $h_y$ is the indicator function of the set $\{x\in E: x\cdot y=t\}$. Two of the authors, with Maxwell Sun, showed in the case $d=3$ that if $|E|\geq Cq^{\frac{11}{4}}$ and $q$ is sufficiently large, then the VC-dimension of $\mathcal{H}_t(E)$ is 3. In this paper, we generalize the result to arbitrary dimension and improve the exponent in the case $d=3$.

A $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of this article is to display a $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$. The poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ is briefly described as follows. Start with an $(N+M)$-dimensional vector space $H$ over a finite field with $q$ elements. Fix an $M$-dimensional subspace $h$ of $H$. The vertex set $X$ of $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ consists of the subspaces of $H$ that have zero intersection with $h$. The partial order on $X$ is the inclusion relation. The $Q$-polynomial structure involves two matrices $A, A^* \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ with the following entries. For $y, z \in X$ the matrix $A$ has $(y,z)$-entry $1$ (if $y$ covers $z$); $q^{{\rm dim}\,y}$ (if $z$ covers $y$); and 0 (if neither of $y,z$ covers the other). The matrix $A^*$ is diagonal, with $(y,y)$-entry $q^{-{\rm dim}\,y}$ for all $y\in X$. By construction, $A^*$ has $N+1$ eigenspaces. By construction, $A$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. We show that $A$ is diagonalizable, with $2N+1$ eigenspaces. We show that $A^*$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. Using this action, we show that $A$ is $Q$-polynomial. We show that $A, A^*$ satisfy a pair of relations called the tridiagonal relations. We consider the subalgebra $T$ of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by $A, A^*$. We show that $A,A^*$ act on each irreducible $T$-module as a Leonard pair.

Exhaustive Generation of Linear Orthogonal Cellular Automata
We consider the problem of exhaustively visiting all pairs of linear cellular automata which give rise to orthogonal Latin squares, i.e., linear Orthogonal Cellular Automata (OCA). The problem is equivalent to enumerating all pairs of coprime polynomials over a finite field having the same degree and a nonzero constant term. While previous research showed how to count all such pairs for a given degree and order of the finite field, no practical enumeration algorithms have been proposed so far. Here, we start closing this gap by addressing the case of polynomials defined over the field $\F_2$, which corresponds to binary CA. In particular, we exploit Benjamin and Bennett's bijection between coprime and non-coprime pairs of polynomials, which enables us to organize our study along three subproblems, namely the enumeration and count of: (1) sequences of constant terms, (2) sequences of degrees, and (3) sequences of intermediate terms. In the course of this investigation, we unveil interesting connections with algebraic language theory and combinatorics, obtaining an enumeration algorithm and an alternative derivation of the counting formula for this problem.

Multi-parameter Szemerédi-Trotter-type theorems and applications in finite fields
We prove some novel multi-parameter point-line incidence estimates in vector spaces over finite fields. While these could be seen as special cases of higher-dimensional incidence results, they outperform their more general counterparts in those contexts. We go on to present a number of applications to illustrate their use in combinatorial problems from geometry and number theory.

Circularity in Finite Fields and Solutions of the Equations $\boldsymbol{x^{m}+y^{m}-z^{m}=1}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
An explicit formula for the number of solutions of the equation in the title is given when a certain condition, depending only on the exponent and the characteristic of the field, holds. This formula improves the one given by the authors in an earlier paper.

Saturating linear sets of minimal rank
Saturating sets are combinatorial objects in projective spaces over finite fields that have been intensively investigated in the last three decades. They are related to the so-called covering problem of codes in the Hamming metric. In this paper, we consider the recently introduced linear version of such sets, which is, in turn, related to the covering problem in the rank metric. The main questions in this context are how small the rank of a saturating linear set can be and how to construct saturating linear sets of small rank. Recently, Bonini, Borello, and Byrne provided a lower bound on the rank of saturating linear sets in a given projective space, which is shown to be tight in some cases. In this paper, we provide construction of saturating linear sets meeting the lower bound and we develop a link between the saturating property and the scatteredness of linear sets. The last part of the paper is devoted to show some parameters for which the bound is not tight.

Collection of Polynomials over Finite Fields Providing Involutary Permutations
For an odd prime power $q$ satisfying $q\equiv 1\pmod 3$ we construct totally $2(q-1) $ permutation polyomials, all giving involutory permutations with exactly $ 1+ \frac{q-1}3$ fixed points. Among them $(q-1)$ polynomials are trinomials, and the rest are 6-term polynomials.

A proof of the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture for monotone and MDS-constructible Ferrers diagrams
Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes were introduced by Etzion and Silberstein in 2009. In their work, they proposed a conjecture on the largest dimension of a space of matrices over a finite field whose nonzero elements are supported on a given Ferrers diagram and all have rank lower bounded by a fixed positive integer $d$. Since stated, the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture has been verified in a number of cases, often requiring additional constraints on the field size or on the minimum rank $d$ in dependence of the corresponding Ferrers diagram. As of today, this conjecture still remains widely open. Using modular methods, we give a constructive proof of the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture for the class of strictly monotone Ferrers diagrams, which does not depend on the minimum rank $d$ and holds over every finite field. In addition, we leverage on the last result to also prove the conjecture for the class of MDS-constructible Ferrers diagrams, without requiring any restriction on the field size.

Codes and Orbit Covers of Finite Abelian Groups
It is well known that the discrete analogue of a lattice is a linear code which is a vector subspace of Hamming space $\mathbb{F}^n$. The set $\mathbb{F}$ is a finite field and $n \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. Our attempt is to construct a class of lattices such that its discrete analogues are variable length non-linear codes. Let $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ be two finite groups, and let $\mathcal{S}$ be a fixed set of generators for $\mathcal{G}$. The homomorphism code is defined as the set of all homomorphisms from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by, $\mathcal{C} = Hom(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$. To each homomorphism $\varphi$ between $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}$, a codeword $c_\varphi$ is associated, it is a vector of values of $\varphi$ on the generators in $\mathcal{S}$, that is, $c_\varphi = (\varphi(s_1), \varphi(s_2), \dots, \varphi(s_k))$, where $\varphi(s_i)$ is the image of $s_i \in \mathcal{S}$, $1 \leq i \leq k$. We provide a design to construct a variable length binary non-linear code called as automorphism orbit code from a finite abelian $p$-group of rank more than 1, where $p$ is a prime number. For each finite abelian $p$-group, the codewords of the automorphism orbit code are variable length codewords called as automorphism orbit codewords. Note that homomorphism codes are determined by homomorphisms between groups, whereas automorphism orbit codes are specified by partitions of a number, orbits of a group action, homomorphisms and automorphisms of groups. We make use of elements of $Hom(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ to present a cover relation for bit strings of codewords of an automorphism orbit code and formulate a lattice of variable length non-linear codes. Finally, we discuss some information related to the future research work on connections to representation theory of groups and algebras.

Rationality of Four-Valued Families of Weil Sums of Binomials
We investigate the rationality of Weil sums of binomials of the form $W^{K,s}_u=\sum_{x \in K} ψ(x^s - u x)$, where $K$ is a finite field whose canonical additive character is $ψ$, and where $u$ is an element of $K^{\times}$ and $s$ is a positive integer relatively prime to $|K^\times|$, so that $x \mapsto x^s$ is a permutation of $K$. The Weil spectrum for $K$ and $s$, which is the family of values $W^{K,s}_u$ as $u$ runs through $K^\times$, is of interest in arithmetic geometry and in several information-theoretic applications. The Weil spectrum always contains at least three distinct values if $s$ is nondegenerate (i.e., if $s$ is not a power of $p$ modulo $|K^\times|$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $K$). It is already known that if the Weil spectrum contains precisely three distinct values, then they must all be rational integers. We show that if the Weil spectrum contains precisely four distinct values, then they must all be rational integers, with the sole exception of the case where $|K|=5$ and $s \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$.

Almost spanning distance trees in subsets of finite vector spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $d\ge 2$ and an odd prime power $q$, consider the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the distance between two points $(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ and $(y_1,\ldots,y_d)$ is defined as $\sum_{i=1}^d (x_i-y_i)^2$. A distance graph is a graph associated with a non-zero distance to each of its edges. We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields contain every nearly spanning distance tree with bounded degree in each distance. This quantitatively improves results by Bennett, Chapman, Covert, Hart, Iosevich, and Pakianathan on finding distance paths, and results by Pham, Senger, Tait, and Thu on finding distance trees. A key ingredient in proving our main result is to obtain a colorful generalization of a classical result of Haxell about finding nearly spanning bounded-degree trees in an expander.

Matroid lifts and representability
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2024): P1-15 • View PublicationBIB
A 1965 result of Crapo shows that every elementary lift of a matroid $M$ can be constructed from a linear class of circuits of $M$. In a recent paper, Walsh generalized this construction by defining a rank-$k$ lift of a matroid $M$ given a rank-$k$ matroid $N$ on the set of circuits of $M$, and conjectured that all matroid lifts can be obtained in this way. In this sequel paper we simplify Walsh's construction and show that this conjecture is true for representable matroids but is false in general. This gives a new way to certify that a particular matroid is non-representable, which we use to construct new classes of non-representable matroids. Walsh also applied the new matroid lift construction to gain graphs over the additive group of a non-prime finite field, generalizing a construction of Zaslavsky for these special groups. He conjectured that this construction is possible on three or more vertices only for the additive group of a non-prime finite field. We show that this conjecture holds for four or more vertices, but fails for exactly three.

On the proportion of metric matroids whose Jacobians have nontrivial $\mathbf{p}$-torsion
We study the proportion of metric matroids whose Jacobians have nontrivial $p$-torsion. We establish a correspondence between these Jacobians and the $\mathbb{F}_p$-rational points on configuration hypersurfaces, thereby relating their proportions. By counting points over finite fields, we prove that the proportion of these Jacobians is asymptotically equivalent to $1/p$.

From coordinate subspaces over finite fields to ideal multipartite uniform clutters
Take a prime power $q$, an integer $n\geq 2$, and a coordinate subspace $S\subseteq GF(q)^n$ over the Galois field $GF(q)$. One can associate with $S$ an $n$-partite $n$-uniform clutter $\mathcal{C}$, where every part has size $q$ and there is a bijection between the vectors in $S$ and the members of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, we determine when the clutter $\mathcal{C}$ is ideal, a property developed in connection to Packing and Covering problems in the areas of Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization. Interestingly, the characterization differs depending on whether $q$ is $2,4$, a higher power of $2$, or otherwise. Each characterization uses crucially that idealness is a minor-closed property: first the list of excluded minors is identified, and only then is the global structure determined. A key insight is that idealness of $\mathcal{C}$ depends solely on the underlying matroid of $S$. Our theorems also extend from idealness to the stronger max-flow min-cut property. As a consequence, we prove the Replication and $τ=2$ Conjectures for this class of clutters.
Discreteness of asymptotic tensor ranks
Published in Discrete Analysis, September 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Tensor parameters that are amortized or regularized over large tensor powers, often called "asymptotic" tensor parameters, play a central role in several areas including algebraic complexity theory (constructing fast matrix multiplication algorithms), quantum information (entanglement cost and distillable entanglement), and additive combinatorics (bounds on cap sets, sunflower-free sets, etc.). Examples are the asymptotic tensor rank, asymptotic slice rank and asymptotic subrank. Recent works (Costa-Dalai, Blatter-Draisma-Rupniewski, Christandl-Gesmundo-Zuiddam) have investigated notions of discreteness (no accumulation points) or "gaps" in the values of such tensor parameters. We prove a general discreteness theorem for asymptotic tensor parameters of order-three tensors and use this to prove that (1) over any finite field (and in fact any finite set of coefficients in any field), the asymptotic subrank and the asymptotic slice rank have no accumulation points, and (2) over the complex numbers, the asymptotic slice rank has no accumulation points. Central to our approach are two new general lower bounds on the asymptotic subrank of tensors, which measures how much a tensor can be diagonalized. The first lower bound says that the asymptotic subrank of any concise three-tensor is at least the cube-root of the smallest dimension. The second lower bound says that any concise three-tensor that is "narrow enough" (has one dimension much smaller than the other two) has maximal asymptotic subrank. Our proofs rely on new lower bounds on the maximum rank in matrix subspaces that are obtained by slicing a three-tensor in the three different directions. We prove that for any concise tensor, the product of any two such maximum ranks must be large, and as a consequence there are always two distinct directions with large max-rank.

On AG codes from a generalization of the Deligne-Lustzig curve of Suzuki type
In this paper, Algebraic-Geometric (AG) codes and quantum codes associated to a family of curves which comprises the famous Suzuki curve are investigated. The Weierstrass semigroup at some rational point is computed. Notably, each curve in the family turn out to be a Castle curve over some finite field, and a weak Castle curve over its extensions. This is a relevant feature when codes constructed from the curve are considered.

Genuinely nonabelian partial difference sets
Strongly regular graphs (SRGs) provide a fertile area of exploration in algebraic combinatorics, integrating techniques in graph theory, linear algebra, group theory, finite fields, finite geometry, and number theory. Of particular interest are those SRGs with a large automorphism group. If an automorphism group acts regularly (sharply transitively) on the vertices of the graph, then we may identify the graph with a subset of the group, a partial difference set (PDS), which allows us to apply techniques from group theory to examine the graph. Much of the work over the past four decades has concentrated on abelian PDSs using the powerful techniques of character theory. However, little work has been done on nonabelian PDSs. In this paper we point out the existence of \textit{genuinely nonabelian} PDSs, i.e., PDSs for parameter sets where a nonabelian group is the only possible regular automorphism group. We include methods for demonstrating that abelian PDSs are not possible for a particular set of parameters or for a particular SRG. Four infinite families of genuinely nonabelian PDSs are described, two of which -- one arising from triangular graphs and one arising from Krein covers of complete graphs constructed by Godsil \cite{Godsil_1992} -- are new. We also include a new nonabelian PDS found by computer search and present some possible future directions of research.
Non-linear MRD codes from cones over exterior sets
By using the notion of $d$-embedding $Γ$ of a (canonical) subgeometry $Σ$ and of exterior set with respect to the $h$-secant variety $Ω_{h}(\mathcal{A})$ of a subset $\mathcal{A}$, $ 0 \leq h \leq n-1$, in the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, $n \geq 3$, in this article we construct a class of non-linear $(n,n,q;d)$-MRD codes for any $ 2 \leq d \leq n-1$. A code $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ of this class, where $1\in T \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ and $σ$ is a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}|\mathbb{F}_q)$, arises from a cone of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$ with vertex an $(n-d-2)$-dimensional subspace over a maximum exterior set $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to $Ω_{d-2}(Γ)$. We prove that the codes introduced in [Cossidente, A., Marino, G., Pavese, F.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 79, 597--609 (2016); Durante, N., Siciliano, A.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries. Electron. J. Comb. Codes Cryptogr. 86, 1175--1184 (2018)] are appropriate punctured ones of $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ and solve completely the inequivalence issue for this class showing that $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ is neither equivalent nor adjointly equivalent to the non-linear MRD code $\mathcal{C}_{n,k,σ,I}$, $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, obtained in [Otal, K., Özbudak, F.: Some new non-additive maximum rank distance codes.
