Edge and Pair Queries -- Random Graphs and Complexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate two types of query games played on a graph, pair queries and edge queries. We concentrate on investigating the two associated graph parameters for binomial random graphs, and showing that determining any of the two parameters is NP-hard for bounded degree graphs.

Cheeger Inequalities for Vertex Expansion and Reweighted Eigenvalues
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Cheeger's inequality relates the edge conductance $φ$ of a graph and the second smallest eigenvalue $λ_2$ of the Laplacian matrix. Recently, Olesker-Taylor and Zanetti discovered a Cheeger-type inequality $ψ^2 / \log |V| \lesssim λ_2^* \lesssim ψ$ connecting the vertex expansion $ψ$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ and the maximum reweighted second smallest eigenvalue $λ_2^*$ of the Laplacian matrix. In this work, we first improve their result to $ψ^2 / \log d \lesssim λ_2^* \lesssim ψ$ where $d$ is the maximum degree in $G$, which is optimal assuming the small-set expansion conjecture. Also, the improved result holds for weighted vertex expansion, answering an open question by Olesker-Taylor and Zanetti. Building on this connection, we then develop a new spectral theory for vertex expansion. We discover that several interesting generalizations of Cheeger inequalities relating edge conductances and eigenvalues have a close analog in relating vertex expansions and reweighted eigenvalues. These include an analog of Trevisan's result on bipartiteness, an analog of higher order Cheeger's inequality, and an analog of improved Cheeger's inequality. Finally, inspired by this connection, we present negative evidence to the $0/1$-polytope edge expansion conjecture by Mihail and Vazirani. We construct $0/1$-polytopes whose graphs have very poor vertex expansion. This implies that the fastest mixing time to the uniform distribution on the vertices of these $0/1$-polytopes is almost linear in the graph size. This does not provide a counterexample to the conjecture, but this is in contrast with known positive results which proved poly-logarithmic mixing time to the uniform distribution on the vertices of subclasses of $0/1$-polytopes.

Saturation of Ordered Graphs
Recently, the saturation problem of $0$-$1$ matrices gained a lot of attention. This problem can be regarded as a saturation problem of ordered bipartite graphs. Motivated by this, we initiate the study of the saturation problem of ordered and cyclically ordered graphs. We prove that dichotomy holds also in these two cases, i.e., for a (cyclically) ordered graph its saturation function is either bounded or linear. We also determine the order of magnitude for large classes of (cyclically) ordered graphs, giving infinite many examples exhibiting both possible behaviours, answering a problem of Pálvölgyi. In particular, in the ordered case we define a natural subclass of ordered matchings, the class of linked matchings, and we start their systematic study, concentrating on linked matchings with at most three links and prove that many of them have bounded saturation function. In both the ordered and cyclically ordered case we also consider the semisaturation problem, where dichotomy holds as well and we can even fully characterize the graphs that have bounded semisaturation function.

Arc coloring of odd graphs for hamiltonicity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Coloring the arcs of biregular graphs was introduced with possible applications to industrial chemistry, molecular biology, cellular neuroscience, etc. Here, we deal with arc coloring in some non-bipartite graphs. In fact, for $1<k\in\mathbb{Z}$, we find that the odd graph $O_k$ has an arc factorization with colors $0,1,\ldots,k$ such that the sum of colors of the two arcs of each edge equals $k$. This is applied to analyzing the influence of such arc factorizations in recently constructed uniform 2-factors in $O_k$ and in Hamilton cycles in $O_k$ as well as in its double covering graph known as the middle-levels graph $M_k$.
The Turán number of the grid
For a positive integer $t$, let $F_t$ denote the graph of the $t\times t$ grid. Motivated by a 50-year-old conjecture of Erdős about Turán numbers of $r$-degenerate graphs, we prove that there exists a constant $C=C(t)$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_t)\leq Cn^{3/2}$. This bound is tight up to the value of $C$. One of the interesting ingredients of our proof is a novel way of using the tensor power trick.

Constructible Graphs and Pursuit
Published • View PublicationBIB
A (finite or infinite) graph is called constructible if it may be obtained recursively from the one-point graph by repeatedly adding dominated vertices. In the finite case, the constructible graphs are precisely the cop-win graphs, but for infinite graphs the situation is not well understood. One of our aims in this paper is to give a graph that is cop-win but not constructible. This is the first known such example. We also show that every countable ordinal arises as the rank of some constructible graph, answering a question of Evron, Solomon and Stahl. In addition, we give a finite constructible graph for which there is no construction order whose associated domination map is a homomorphism, answering a question of Chastand, Laviolette and Polat. Lehner showed that every constructible graph is a weak cop win (meaning that the cop can eventually force the robber out of any finite set). Our other main aim is to investigate how this notion relates to the notion of `locally constructible' (every finite graph is contained in a finite constructible subgraph). We show that, under mild extra conditions, every locally constructible graph is a weak cop win. But we also give an example to show that, in general, a locally constructible graph need not be a weak cop win. Surprisingly, this graph may even be chosen to be locally finite. We also give some open problems.
Asymptotics of the hypergraph bipartite Turán problem
For positive integers $s,t,r$, let $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$ denote the $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is the union of pairwise disjoint sets $X,Y_1,\dots,Y_t$, where $|X| = s$ and $|Y_1| = \dots = |Y_t| = r-1$, and whose edge set is $\{\{x\} \cup Y_i: x \in X, 1\leq i\leq t\}$. The study of the Turán function of $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$ received considerable interest in recent years. Our main results are as follows. First, we show that \begin{equation} \mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)}) = O_{s,r}(t^{\frac{1}{s-1}}n^{r - \frac{1}{s-1}}) \end{equation} for all $s,t\geq 2$ and $r\geq 3$, improving the power of $n$ in the previously best bound and resolving a question of Mubayi and Verstraëte about the dependence of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})$ on $t$. Second, we show that this upper bound is tight when $r$ is even and $t \gg s$. This disproves a conjecture of Xu, Zhang and Ge. Third, we show that the above upper bound is not tight for $r = 3$, namely that $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(3)}) = O_{s,t}(n^{3 - \frac{1}{s-1} - \varepsilon_s})$ (for all $s\geq 3$). This indicates that the behaviour of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)})$ might depend on the parity of $r$. Lastly, we prove a conjecture of Ergemlidze, Jiang and Methuku on the hypergraph analogue of the bipartite Turán problem for graphs with bounded degrees on one side. Our tools include a novel twist on the dependent random choice method as well as a variant of the celebrated norm graphs constructed by Kollár, Rónyai and Szabó.
Convex geometries over induced paths with bounded length
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph convexity spaces have been studied in many contexts. In particular, some studies are devoted to determine if a graph equipped with a convexity space is a {\em convex geometry}. It is well known that chordal and Ptolemaic graphs can be characterized as convex geometries with respect to the geodesic and monophonic convexities, respectively. Weak polarizable graphs, interval graphs, and proper interval graphs can also be characterized in this way. In this paper we introduce the notion of {\em $l^k$-convexity}, a natural restriction of the monophonic convexity. Let $G$ be a graph and $k\geq 2$ an integer. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is \textit{$l^k$-convex} if and only if for any pair of vertices $x,y$ of $S$, each induced path of length {\em at most} $k$ connecting $x$ and $y$ is completely contained in the subgraph induced by $S$. The {\em $l^k$-convexity} consists of all $l^k$-convex subsets of $G$. In this work, we characterize {\em $l^k$-convex geometries} (graphs that are convex geometries with respect to the $l^k$-convexity) for $k\in\{2,3\}$. We show that a graph $G$ is an $l^2$-convex geometry if and only if $G$ is a chordal $P_4$-free graph, and an $l^3$-convex geometry if and only if $G$ is a chordal graph with diameter at most three such that its induced gems satisfy a special "solving" property. As far as the authors know, the class of $l^3$-convex geometries is the first example of a non-hereditary class of convex geometries.

Multitriangulations and tropical Pfaffians
Published in SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, 8(2) (2024), 302-332 • View PublicationBIB
The $k$-associahedron $Ass_k(n)$ is the simplicial complex of $(k+1)$-crossing-free subgraphs of the complete graph with vertices on a circle. Its facets are called $k$-triangulations. We explore the connection of $Ass_k(n)$ with the Pfaffian variety $Pf_k(n)\subset {\mathbb K}^{\binom{[n]}2}$ of antisymmetric matrices of rank $\le 2k$. First, we characterize the Gröbner cone $Grob_k(n)\subset{\mathbb R}^{\binom{[n]}2}$ producing as initial ideal of $I(Pf_k(n))$ the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Ass_k(n)$ (that is, the monomial ideal generated by $(k+1)$-crossings). This implies that $k$-triangulations are bases in the algebraic matroid of $Pf_k(n)$, a matroid closely related to low-rank completion of antisymmetric matrices. We then look at the tropicalization of $Pf_k(n)$ and show that $Ass_k(n)$ embeds naturally as the intersection of $\operatorname{trop}(Pf_k(n))$ and $Grob_k(n)$, and is contained in the totally positive part $\operatorname{trop}^+( Pf_k(n))$ of it. We show that for $k=1$ and for each triangulation $T$ of the $n$-gon, the projection of this embedding of $Ass_k(n)$ to the $n-3$ coordinates corresponding to diagonals in $T$ gives a complete polytopal fan, realizing the associahedron. This fan is linearly isomorphic to the $\mathbf g$-vector fan of the cluster algebra of type $A$, shown to be polytopal by Hohlweg, Pilaud and Stella in (2018).

Complete combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees
A (Euclidean) greedy drawing of a graph is a drawing in which, for any two vertices $s,t$ ($s \neq t$), there is a neighbor vertex of $s$ that is closer to $t$ than to $s$ in the Euclidean distance. Greedy drawings are important in the context of message routing in networks, and graph classes that admit greedy drawings have been actively studied. Nöllenburg and Prutkin (Discrete Comput. Geom., 58(3), pp.543-579, 2017) gave a characterization of greedy-drawable trees in terms of an inequality system that contains a non-linear equation. Using the characterization, they gave a linear-time recognition algorithm for greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree $\leq 4$. However, a combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree 5 was left open. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees of maximum degree $5$, which leads to a complete combinatorial characterization of greedy-drawable trees. Furthermore, we give a characterization of greedy-drawable pseudo-trees.
Max Weight Independent Set in graphs with no long claws: An analog of the Gyárfás' path argument
Published • View PublicationBIB
We revisit recent developments for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in graphs excluding a subdivided claw $S_{t,t,t}$ as an induced subgraph [Chudnovsky, Pilipczuk, Pilipczuk, Thomassé, SODA 2020] and provide a subexponential-time algorithm with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n}\log n)}$ and a quasipolynomial-time approximation scheme with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-1} \log^{5} n)}$. The Gyárfás' path argument, a powerful tool that is the main building block for many algorithms in $P_t$-free graphs, ensures that given an $n$-vertex $P_t$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of at most $t-1$ vertices, such that every connected component of $G-N[P]$ has at most $n/2$ vertices. Our main technical contribution is an analog of this result for $S_{t,t,t}$-free graphs: given an $n$-vertex $S_{t,t,t}$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of $\mathcal{O}(t \log n)$ vertices and an extended strip decomposition (an appropriate analog of the decomposition into connected components) of $G-N[P]$ such that every particle (an appropriate analog of a connected component to recurse on) of the said extended strip decomposition has at most $n/2$ vertices.
Minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity and $(s,1)$-polarity in generalizations of cographs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of $P_4$-reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that also when restricted to the classes of $P_4$-sparse graphs and $P_4$-extendible graphs (both of which extend $P_4$-reducible graphs) every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions. We present complete lists of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and $(s,1)$-polarity, where $s$ is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of $P_4$-reducible graphs, all the $P_4$-sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs.

Dimension reduction for maximum matchings and the Fastest Mixing Markov Chain
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G = (V,E)$ be an undirected graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and vertex conductance $Ψ^*(G)$. We show that there exists a symmetric, stochastic matrix $P$, with off-diagonal entries supported on $E$, whose spectral gap $γ^*(P)$ satisfies \[Ψ^*(G)^{2}/\logΔ\lesssim γ^*(P) \lesssim Ψ^*(G).\] Our bound is optimal under the Small Set Expansion Hypothesis, and answers a question of Olesker-Taylor and Zanetti, who obtained such a result with $\logΔ$ replaced by $\log|V|$. In order to obtain our result, we show how to embed a negative-type semi-metric $d$ defined on $V$ into a negative-type semi-metric $d'$ supported in $\mathbb{R}^{O(\logΔ)}$, such that the (fractional) matching number of the weighted graph $(V,E,d)$ is approximately equal to that of $(V,E,d')$.

A new construction of strongly regular graphs with parameters of the complement symplectic graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symplectic graph Sp(2d, q) is the collinearity graph of the symplectic space of dimension 2d over a finite field of order q. A k-regular graph on v vertices is a divisible design graph with parameters (v, k, lambda_1, lambda_2 ,m,n) if its vertex set can be partitioned into m classes of size n, such that any two different vertices from the same class have lambda_1 common neighbours, and any two vertices from different classes have lambda_2 common neighbours whenever it is not complete or edgeless. In this paper we propose a new construction of strongly regular graphs with the parameters of the complement of the symplectic graph using divisible design graphs.

Combinatorial expressions of Hopf polynomial invariants
In 2017 Aguiar and Ardila provided a generic way to construct polynomial invariants of combinatorial objects using the notions of Hopf monoids and characters of Hopf monoids. They show that it is possible to find a combinatorial interpretation of these polynomials over negative integers using the antipode and give a cancellation-free grouping-free formula for the antipode on generalized permutahedra. In this work, we give a combinatorial interpretation of these polynomials over both positive integers and negative integers for the Hopf monoids of generalized permutahedra and hypergraphs and for every character on these two Hopf monoids. In the case of hypergraphs, we present two different proofs for the interpretation on negative integers. We then deduce similar results on other combinatorial objects including graphs, simplicial complexes and building sets.

Blowup polynomials and delta-matroids of graphs
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 86B (2022), Article #42 • Search Publication
For every finite simple connected graph $G = (V,E)$, we introduce an invariant, its blowup-polynomial $p_G(\{ n_v : v \in V \})$. This is obtained by dividing the determinant of the distance matrix of its blowup graph $G[{\bf n}]$ (containing $n_v$ copies of $v$) by an exponential factor. We show that $p_G({\bf n})$ is indeed a polynomial function in the sizes $n_v$, which is moreover multi-affine and real-stable. This associates a hitherto unexplored delta-matroid to each graph $G$; and we provide a second unexplored one for each tree. As another consequence, we obtain a new characterization of complete multipartite graphs, via the homogenization at $-1$ of $p_G$ being completely/strongly log-concave, i.e., Lorentzian. (These results extend to weighted graphs.) Finally, we show $p_G$ is indeed a graph invariant, i.e., $p_G$ and its symmetries (in the variables ${\bf n}$) recover $G$ and its isometries, respectively.

On the Hardness of the Minimum Distance Problem of Quantum Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (Volume: 69, Issue: 10, October 2023) • View PublicationBIB
We study the hardness of the problem of finding the distance of quantum error-correcting codes. The analogous problem for classical codes is known to be NP-hard, even in approximate form. For quantum codes, various problems related to decoding are known to be NP-hard, but the hardness of the distance problem has not been studied before. In this work, we show that finding the minimum distance of stabilizer quantum codes exactly or approximately is NP-hard. This result is obtained by reducing the classical minimum distance problem to the quantum problem, using the CWS framework for quantum codes, which constructs a quantum code using a classical code and a graph. A main technical tool used for our result is a lower bound on the so-called graph state distance of 4-cycle free graphs. In particular, we show that for a 4-cycle free graph $G$, its graph state distance is either $δ$ or $δ+1$, where $δ$ is the minimum vertex degree of $G$. Due to a well-known reduction from stabilizer codes to CSS codes, our results also imply that finding the minimum distance of CSS codes is also NP-hard.
Canonical binary $Δ$-matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The handle slide operation, originally defined for ribbon graphs, was extended to delta-matroids by I. Moffatt and E. Mphako-Bandab, who show that, using a delta-matroid analogue of handle slides, every binary delta-matroid in which the empty set is feasible can be written in a canonical form analogous to the canonical form for one-vertex maps on a surface. We provide a canonical form for binary delta-matroids without restriction on the feasibility of the empty set.

New proofs of stability theorems on spectral graph problems
Both the Simonovits stability theorem and the Nikiforov spectral stability theorem are powerful tools for solving exact values of Turán numbers in extremal graph theory. Recently, Füredi [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 115 (2015)] provided a concise and contemporary proof of the Simonovits stability theorem. In this note, we present a unified treatment for some extremal graph problems, including short proofs of Nikiforov's spectral stability theorem and the clique stability theorem proved recently by Ma and Qiu [European J. Combin. 84 (2020)]. Moreover, some spectral extremal problems related to the $p$-spectral radius and signless Laplacian radius are also included.
Few Induced Disjoint Paths for $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Paths $P^1,\ldots,P^k$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ are mutually induced if any two distinct $P^i$ and $P^j$ have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices. For a fixed integer $k$, the $k$-Induced Disjoint Paths problem is to decide if a graph $G$ with $k$ pairs of specified vertices $(s_i,t_i)$ contains $k$ mutually induced paths $P^i$ such that each $P^i$ starts from $s_i$ and ends at $t_i$. Whereas the non-induced version is well-known to be polynomial-time solvable for every fixed integer $k$, a classical result from the literature states that even $2$-Induced Disjoint Paths is NP-complete. We prove new complexity results for $k$-Induced Disjoint Paths if the input is restricted to $H$-free graphs, that is, graphs without a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph. We compare our results with a complexity dichotomy for Induced Disjoint Paths, the variant where $k$ is part of the input.
