A composition law and refined notions of convergence for periodic continued fractions
We define an equivalence relation on periodic continued fractions with partial quotients in a ring $\mathcal{O} \subseteq \mathbf{C}$, a group law on these equivalence classes, and a map from these equivalence classes to matrices in $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O})$ with determinant $\pm1$. We prove this group of equivalence classes is isomorphic to $\mathbf{Z}/2\mathbf{Z}\ast\mathcal{O}$ and study certain of its one- and two-dimensional representations.
For a periodic continued fraction with period $k$, we give a refined description of the limits of the $k$ different $k$-decimations of its sequence of convergents. We show that for a periodic continued fraction associated to a matrix with eigenvalues of different magnitudes, all $k$ of these limits exist in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbf{C})$ and a strict majority of them are equal.
On cocliques in commutative Schurian association schemes of the symmetric group
Given the symmetric group $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and a multiplicity-free subgroup $H\leq G$, the orbitals of the action of $G$ on $G/H$ by left multiplication induce a commutative association scheme. The irreducible constituents of the permutation character of $G$ acting on $G/H$ are indexed by partitions of $n$ and if $λ\vdash n$ is the second largest partition in dominance ordering among these, then the Young subgroup $\operatorname{Sym}(λ)$ admits two orbits in its action on $G/H$, which are $\mathcal{S}_λ$ and its complement.
In their monograph [Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems: Algebraic Approaches. {\it Cambridge University Press}, 2016] (Problem~16.13.1), Godsil and Meagher asked whether $\mathcal{S}_λ$ is a coclique of a graph in the commutative association scheme arising from the action of $G$ on $G/H$. If such a graph exists, then they also asked whether its smallest eigenvalue is afforded by the $λ$-module.
In this paper, we initiate the study of this question by taking $λ= [n-1,1]$.
We show that the answer to this question is affirmative for the pair of groups $\left(G,H\right)$, where $G = \operatorname{Sym}(2k+1)$ and $H = \operatorname{Sym}(2) \wr \operatorname{Sym}(k)$, or $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and $H$ is one of $\operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Sym}(n-k),\ \operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)$, or $\left(\operatorname{Alt}(k)\times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)\right) \cap \operatorname{Alt}(n)$. For the pair $(G,H) = \left(\operatorname{Sym}(2k),\operatorname{Sym}(k)\wr \operatorname{Sym}(2)\right)$, we also prove that the answer to this question of Godsil and Meagher is negative.
Kemperman's inequality and Freiman's lemma via few translates
Let $G$ be a connected compact group equipped with the normalised Haar measure $μ$. Our first result shows that given $α, β>0$, there is a constant $c = c(α,β)>0$ such that for any compact sets $A,B\subseteq G$ with $ αμ(B)\geqμ(A)\geq μ(B) $ and $ μ(A)+μ(B)\leq 1-β$, there exist $b_1,\dots b_c\in B$ such that \[ μ(A\cdot \{b_1,\dots,b_c\})\geq μ(A)+μ(B).\] A special case of this, that is, when $G=\mathbb{T}^d$, confirms a recent conjecture of Bollobás, Leader and Tiba.
We also prove a quantitatively stronger version of such a result in the discrete setting of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Thus, given $d \in \mathbb{N}$, we show that there exists $c = c(d) >0$ such that for any finite, non-empty set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ which is not contained in a translate of a hyperplane, one can find $a_1, \dots, a_c \in A$ satisfying \[ |A+ \{a_1, \dots, a_c\}| \geq (d+1)|A| - O_d(1). \] The main term here is optimal and recovers the bounds given by Freiman's lemma up to the $O_d(1)$ error term.
Regular and semi-regular representations of groups by posets
By a result of Babai, with finitely many exceptions, every group $G$ admits a semi-regular poset representation with three orbits, that is, a poset $P$ with automorphism group $\textrm{Aut}(P) \simeq G$ such that the action of $\textrm{Aut}(P)$ on the underlying set is free and with three orbits. Among finite groups, only the trivial group and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ have a regular poset representation (i.e. semi-regular with one orbit), however many infinite groups admit such a representation. In this paper we study non-necessarily finite groups which have a regular representation or a semi-regular representation with two orbits. We prove that if $G$ admits a Cayley graph which is locally the Cayley graph of a free group, then it has a semi-regular representation of height 1 with two orbits. In this case we will see that any extension of the integers by $G$ admits a regular representation. Applications are given to finite simple groups, hyperbolic groups, random groups and indicable groups.
Peter-Weyl theorem for Iwahori groups and highest weight categories
We study the algebra of functions on the Iwahori group via the category of graded bounded representations of its Lie algebra. In particular, we identify the standard and costandard objects in this category with certain generalized Weyl modules. Using this identification we express the characters of the standard and costandard objects in terms of specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. We also prove that our category of interest admits a generalized highest weight structure (known as stratified structure). We show, more generally, that such a structure on a category of representations of a Lie algebra implies the Peter-Weyl type theorem for the corresponding algebraic group. In the Iwahori case, standard filtrations of indecomposable projective objects correspond to new ``reciprocal'' Macdonald-type identities.

Without using the classification of finite simple groups, we show that the probability that two random elements of $S_n$ generate a primitive group smaller than $A_n$ is at most $\exp(-c(n \log n)^{1/2})$. As a corollary we get Dixon's asymptotic expansion \[
1 - 1/n - 1/n^2 - 4/n^3 - 23/n^4 - \cdots \] for the probability that two random elements of $S_n$ (or $A_n$) generate a subgroup containing $A_n$.
Fixed elements of pircon automorphisms
We prove that the subposet induced by the fixed elements of any automorphism of a pircon is also a pircon. By a result of Abdallah, Hansson, and Hultman, the order complex of any open interval in a pircon is a PL ball or a PL sphere. We apply our main results to symmetric groups of the form $S_{2n}$. A consequence is that the fixed point free signed involutions form a pircon under the dual of the Bruhat order on the hyperoctahedral group. Finally, we prove that this poset is, in fact, EL-shellable, which is a type $B$ analogue of a result of Can, Cherniavsky, and Twelbeck.
On Finite groups whose power graphs are line graphs
S. Bera (Line graph characterization of power graphs of finite nilpotent groups, \textit{Communication in Algebra}, 50(11), 4652-4668, 2022) characterized finite nilpotent groups whose power graphs and proper power graphs are line graphs. In this paper, we extend the results of above mentioned paper to arbitrary finite groups. Also, we correct the corresponding result of the proper power graphs of dihedral groups. Moreover, we classify all the finite groups whose enhanced power graphs are line graphs. We classify all the finite nilpotent groups (except non-abelian $2$-groups) whose proper enhanced power graphs are line graphs of some graphs. Finally, we determine all the finite groups whose power graphs, proper power graphs, enhanced power graphs and proper enhanced power graphs are the complement of line graphs, respectively.
A Serre spectral sequence for the moduli space of tropical curves
We construct, for all $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 0$, a spectral sequence of rational $S_n$-representations which computes the $S_n$-equivariant reduced rational cohomology of the tropical moduli spaces of curves $Δ_{g,n}$ in terms of compactly supported cohomology groups of configuration spaces of $n$ points on graphs of genus $g$. Using the canonical $S_n$-equivariant isomorphisms $\widetilde{H}^{i-1}(Δ_{g,n};\mathbb{Q}) \cong W_0 H^i_c(\mathcal{M}_{g,n};\mathbb{Q})$, we calculate the weight $0$, compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the range $g=3$ and $n\leq 9$, with partial computations available for $n\leq 13$.
Crystal isomorphisms and Mullineux involution II
We present a new combinatorial and conjectural algorithm for computing the Mullineux involution for the symmetric group and its Hecke algebra. This algorithm is built on a conjectural property of crystal isomorphisms which can be rephrased in a purely combinatorial way.
A diagram-like basis for the multiset partition algebra
There is a classical connection between the representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group called Schur-Weyl duality. Variations on this principle yield analogous connections between the symmetric group and other objects such as the partition algebra and more recently the multiset partition algebra. The partition algebra has a well-known basis indexed by graph-theoretic diagrams which allows the multiplication in the algebra to be understood visually as combinations of these diagrams. We construct an analogous basis for the multiset partition algebra called the diagram-like basis and use this basis to construct its irreducible representations and give a generating set. We also provide a change-of-basis from the orbit basis of the multiset partition algebra to this diagram-like basis which exhibits similarities to the analogous change of basis for the partition algebra.
Sharp Hypercontractivity for Global Functions
For a function $f$ on the hypercube $\{0,1\}^n$ with Fourier expansion $f=\sum_{S\subseteq[n]}\hat f(S)χ_S$, the hypercontractive inequality allows bounding norms of $T_ρf=\sum_Sρ^{|S|} \hat f(S)χ_S$ in terms of norms of $f$. If $f$ is Boolean-valued, the level-$d$ inequality allows bounding the norm of $f^{=d}=\sum_{|S|=d}\hat f(S)χ_S$ in terms of $E[f]$. These inequalities play a central role in analysis of Boolean functions and its applications. While both inequalities hold in a sharp form when the hypercube is endowed with the uniform measure, they do not hold for more general discrete product spaces, and finding a `natural' generalization was a long-standing open problem. In 2024, Keevash et al.~obtained a hypercontractive inequality for general discrete product spaces, that holds for functions which are `global' -- namely, are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This hypercontractive inequality is not sharp, which precludes applications to $S_n$ and to other settings where sharpness of the bound is crucial. Also, no sharp level-$d$ inequality for global functions over general discrete product spaces is known. We obtain sharp versions of the hypercontractive inequality and of the level-$d$ inequality for this setting. Our inequalities open the way for diverse applications to extremal set theory, group theory, theoretical computer science, and number theory. We demonstrate this by proving quantitative bounds on the size of intersecting families of sets and vectors under weak symmetry conditions and by describing numerous applications that were obtained using our results -- to the study of functions over $S_n$, including hypercontractivity and level-$d$ inequalities, character bounds, variants of Roth's theorem and of Bogolyubov's lemma and diameter bounds, and an application to the Furstenberg-S{á}rk{ö}zy problem.

Let $S$ be a non-empty finite set. A flag of $S$ is a set $f$ of non-empty proper subsets of $S$ such that $X\subseteq Y$ or $Y\subseteq X$ for all $X,Y\in f$. The set $\{|X|:X\in f\}$ is called the type of $f$. Two flags $f$ and $f'$ are in general position with respect to $S$ if $X\cap Y=\emptyset$ or $X\cup Y=S$ for all $X\in f$ and $Y\in f'$. For a fixed type $T$, Klaus Metsch defined the general position graph $Γ(S,T)$ whose vertices are the flags of $S$ of type $T$ with two vertices being adjacent when the corresponding flags are in general position. In this paper, we characterize the full automorphism groups of $Γ(S,T)$ in the case that $|T|=2$. In particular, we solve an open problem proposed by Klaus Metsch.
Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics
Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory.
We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group.
In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.
Generalized quaternion groups with the m-DCI property
A Cayley digraph Cay(G,S) of a finite group $G$ with respect to a subset $S$ of $G$ is said to be a CI-digraph if for every Cayley digraph Cay(G,T) isomorphic to Cay(G,S), there exists an automorphism $σ$ of $G$ such that $S^σ=T$. A finite group $G$ is said to have the $m$-DCI property for some positive integer $m$ if all $m$-valent Cayley digraphs of $G$ are CI-digraphs, and is said to be a DCI-group if $G$ has the $m$-DCI property for all $1\leq m\leq |G|$. Let $\mathrm{Q}_{4n}$ be a generalized quaternion group of order $4n$ with an integer $n\geq 3$, and let $\mathrm{Q}_{4n}$ have the $m$-DCI property for some $1 \leq m\leq 2n-1$. It is shown in this paper that $n$ is odd, and $n$ is not divisible by $p^2$ for any prime $p\leq m-1$. Furthermore, if $n\geq 3$ is a power of a prime $p$, then $\mathrm{Q}_{4n}$ has the $m$-DCI property if and only if $p$ is odd, and either $n=p$ or $1\leq m\leq p$.

In 1968, R. Steinberg proved a theorem stating that the exterior powers of an irreducible reflection representation of a Euclidean reflection group are again irreducible and pairwise non-isomorphic. We extend this result to a more general context where the inner product invariant under the group action may not necessarily exist.
Representations of the quasi-partition algebras
The quasi-partition algebras were introduced by Daugherty and the first author as centralizers of the symmetric group. In this article, we give a more general definition of these algebras and give a construction of their simple modules. In addition, we introduce two new algebras, we give linear bases and show that for specializations of their parameters, these new algebras are isomorphic to centralizer algebras. We provide a generalized Bratteli diagram that illustrates how the representation theory of the three algebras discussed in this paper are related. Moreover, we give combinatorial formulas for the dimensions of the simple modules of these algebras.
Homology rings of affine grassmannians and positively multiplicative graphs
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be an untwisted affine Lie algebra with associated Weyl group $W_a$. To any level 0 weight $γ$ we associate a weighted graph $Γ_γ$ that encodes the orbit of $γ$ under the action $W_a$. We show that the graph $Γ_γ$ encodes the periodic orientation of certain subsets of alcoves in $W_a$ and therefore can be interpreted as an automaton determining the reduced expressions in these subsets. Then, by using some relevant quotients of the homology ring of affine Grassmannians, we show that $Γ_γ$ is positively multiplicative. This allows us in particular to compute the structure constants of the homology rings using elementary linear algebra on multiplicative graphs. In another direction, the positivity of $Γ_γ$ yields the key ingredients to study a large class of central random walks on alcoves.
Codes and Orbit Covers of Finite Abelian Groups
It is well known that the discrete analogue of a lattice is a linear code which is a vector subspace of Hamming space $\mathbb{F}^n$. The set $\mathbb{F}$ is a finite field and $n \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. Our attempt is to construct a class of lattices such that its discrete analogues are variable length non-linear codes. Let $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ be two finite groups, and let $\mathcal{S}$ be a fixed set of generators for $\mathcal{G}$. The homomorphism code is defined as the set of all homomorphisms from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by, $\mathcal{C} = Hom(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$. To each homomorphism $\varphi$ between $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{H}$, a codeword $c_\varphi$ is associated, it is a vector of values of $\varphi$ on the generators in $\mathcal{S}$, that is, $c_\varphi = (\varphi(s_1), \varphi(s_2), \dots, \varphi(s_k))$, where $\varphi(s_i)$ is the image of $s_i \in \mathcal{S}$, $1 \leq i \leq k$. We provide a design to construct a variable length binary non-linear code called as automorphism orbit code from a finite abelian $p$-group of rank more than 1, where $p$ is a prime number. For each finite abelian $p$-group, the codewords of the automorphism orbit code are variable length codewords called as automorphism orbit codewords. Note that homomorphism codes are determined by homomorphisms between groups, whereas automorphism orbit codes are specified by partitions of a number, orbits of a group action, homomorphisms and automorphisms of groups. We make use of elements of $Hom(\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{H})$ to present a cover relation for bit strings of codewords of an automorphism orbit code and formulate a lattice of variable length non-linear codes. Finally, we discuss some information related to the future research work on connections to representation theory of groups and algebras.

We answer a question of Bardakov (Kourovka Notebook, Problem 19.8) which asks for the existence of a pair of natural numbers $(c, m)$ with the property that every element in the free group on the two-element set $\{a, b\}$ can be represented as a concatenation of $c$, or fewer, $m$-almost-palindromes in letters $a^{\pm 1}, b^{\pm 1}$. Here, an $m$-almost-palindrome is a word which can be obtained from a palindrome by changing at most $m$ letters. We show that no such pair $(c, m)$ exists. In fact, we show that the analogous result holds for all non-abelian free groups.
