Rigidity of warped cones and coarse geometry of expanders

We study the geometry of warped cones over free, minimal isometric group actions and related constructions of expander graphs. We prove a rigidity theorem for the coarse geometry of such warped cones: Namely, if a group has no abelian factors, then two such warped cones are quasi-isometric if and only if the actions are finite covers of conjugate actions. As a consequence, we produce continuous families of non-quasi-isometric expanders and superexpanders. The proof relies on the use of coarse topology for warped cones, such as a computation of their coarse fundamental groups.

A problem in representation theory of $p$-adic groups is the computation of the \textit{Casselman basis} of Iwahori fixed vectors in the spherical principal series representations, which are dual to the intertwining integrals. We shall express the transition matrix $(m_{u,v})$ of the Casselman basis to another natural basis in terms of certain polynomials which are deformations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials. As an application we will obtain certain new functional equations for these transition matrices under the algebraic involution sending the residue cardinality $q$ to $q^{-1}$. We will also obtain a new proof of a surprising result of Nakasuji and Naruse that relates the matrix $(m_{u,v})$ to its inverse.

An orthomorphism is a permutation $σ$ of $\{1, \dots, n-1\}$ for which $x + σ(x) \mod n$ is also a permutation on $\{1, \dots, n-1\}$. Eberhard, Manners, Mrazović, showed that the number of such orthomorphisms is $(\sqrt{e} + o(1)) \cdot \frac{n!^2}{n^n}$ for odd $n$ and zero otherwise.
In this paper we prove two analogs of these results where $x+σ(x)$ is replaced by $x σ(x)$ (a "multiplicative orthomorphism") or with $x^{σ(x)}$ (an "exponential orthomorphism"). Namely, we show that no multiplicative orthomorphisms exist for $n > 2$ but that exponential orthomorphisms exist whenever $n$ is twice a prime $p$ such that $p-1$ is squarefree. In the latter case we then estimate the number of exponential orthomorphisms.

For a prime number $p$ and a sequence of integers $a_0,\dots,a_k\in \{0,1,\dots,p\}$, let $s(a_0,\dots,a_k)$ be the minimum number of $(k+1)$-tuples $(x_0,\dots,x_k)\in A_0\times\dots\times A_k$ with $x_0=x_1+\dots + x_k$, over subsets $A_0,\dots,A_k\subseteq\mathbb{Z}_p$ of sizes $a_0,\dots,a_k$ respectively. An elegant argument of Lev (independently rediscovered by Samotij and Sudakov) shows that there exists an extremal configuration with all sets $A_i$ being intervals of appropriate length, and that the same conclusion also holds for the related problem, reposed by Bajnok, when $a_0=\dots=a_k=:a$ and $A_0=\dots=A_k$, provided $k$ is not equal 1 modulo $p$. By applying basic Fourier analysis, we show for Bajnok's problem that if $p\ge 13$ and $a\in\{3,\dots,p-3\}$ are fixed while $k\equiv 1\pmod p$ tends to infinity, then the extremal configuration alternates between at least two affine non-equivalent sets.
Connectivity Properties of Factorization Posets in Generated Groups

We consider three notions of connectivity and their interactions in partially ordered sets coming from reduced factorizations of an element in a generated group. While one form of connectivity essentially reflects the connectivity of the poset diagram, the other two are a bit more involved: Hurwitz-connectivity has its origins in algebraic geometry, and shellability in topology. We propose a framework to study these connectivity properties in a uniform way. Our main tool is a certain linear order of the generators that is compatible with the chosen element.
Ramsey expansions of $Λ$-ultrametric spaces

For a finite lattice $Λ$, $Λ$-ultrametric spaces are a convenient language for describing structures equipped with a family of equivalence relations. When $Λ$ is finite and distributive, there exists a generic $Λ$-ultrametric space, and we here identify a family of Ramsey expansions for that space. This then allows a description the universal minimal flow of its automorphism group, and also implies the Ramsey property for all known homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures, i.e. structures in a language of finitely many linear orders. A point of technical interest is that our proof involves classes with non-unary algebraic closure operations. As a byproduct of some of the concepts developed, we also arrive at a natural description of the known homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures, completing our previously begun "census".
Relationships between cycle spaces, gain graphs, graph coverings, fundamental groups, path homology, and graph curvature
We prove a homology vanishing theorem for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Bochner on manifolds \cite{Bochner}. Specifically, we prove that if a graph has positive curvature at every vertex, then its first homology group is trivial, where the notion of homology that we use for graphs is the path homology developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan2}. %\Hm{added the fundamental group curvature relation} We moreover prove that the fundamental group is finite for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Myers on manifolds \cite{Myers1941}. The proofs draw on several separate areas of graph theory. We study graph coverings, gain graphs, and cycle spaces of graphs, in addition to the Bakry-Émery curvature and the path homology. The main results follow as a consequence of several different relationships developed among these different areas. Specifically, we show that a graph with positive curvature can have no non-trivial infinite cover preserving 3-cycles and 4-cycles, and give a combinatorial interpretation of the first path homology in terms of the cycle space of a graph. We relate cycle spaces of graphs to gain graphs with abelian gain group, and relate these to coverings of graphs. Along the way, we prove other new facts about gain graphs, coverings, and cycles spaces that are of related interest. Furthermore, we relate gain graphs to graph homotopy and the fundamental group developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan_homotopy}, and obtain an alternative proof to their result that the abelianization of the fundamental group is isomorphic to the first path homology over the integers.
On asymptotics of two non-uniform recursive tree models
In this thesis the properties of two kinds of non-uniform random recursive trees are studied. In the first model weights are assigned to each node, thus altering the attachment probabilities. We will call these trees weighted recursive trees. In the second model a different distribution rather than the uniform one is chosen on the symmetric group, namely a riffle shuffle distribution. These trees will be called biased recursive trees. For both of these models the number of branches, the number of leaves, the depth of nodes and some other properties are studied. The focus is on asymptotic results and the comparison with uniform random recursive trees. It will be shown that the studied properties of weighted recursive trees are close to uniform recursive trees in many cases when the number of nodes increases. In contrast biased recursive trees show a different behaviour but approach uniform recursive trees depending on the parameters of the riffle shuffle distribution.
Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.
Zeons, Permanents, the Johnson scheme, and Generalized Derangements

Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra" the connection with permanents is shown. Permanents of sub-matrices of a linear combination of the identity matrix and all-ones matrix leads to moment polynomials with respect to the exponential distribution. A permanent trace formula analogous to MacMahon's Master Theorem is presented and applied. Connections with permutation groups acting on sets and the Johnson association scheme arise. The families of numbers appearing as matrix entries turn out to be related to interesting variations on derangements. These generalized derangements are considered in detail as an illustration of the theory.

Lower bounds for the Rényi entropies of sums of independent random variables taking values in cyclic groups of prime order under permutations are established. The main ingredients of our approach are extended rearrangement inequalities in prime cyclic groups building on Lev (2001), and notions of stochastic ordering. Several applications are developed, including to discrete entropy power inequalities, the Littlewood-Offord problem, and counting solutions of certain linear systems.
Heptavalent symmetric graphs with solvable stabilizers admitting vertex-transitive non-abelian simple groups
A graph $Γ$ is said to be symmetric if its automorphism group $\rm Aut(Γ)$ acts transitively on the arc set of $Γ$. In this paper, we show that if $Γ$ is a finite connected heptavalent symmetric graph with solvable stabilizer admitting a vertex-transitive non-abelian simple group $G$ of automorphisms, then either $G$ is normal in $\rm Aut(Γ)$, or $\rm Aut(Γ)$ contains a non-abelian simple normal subgroup $T$ such that $G\leq T$ and $(G,T)$ is explicitly given as one of $11$ possible exception pairs of non-abelian simple groups. Furthermore, if $G$ is regular on the vertex set of $Γ$ then the exception pair $(G,T)$ is one of $7$ possible pairs, and if $G$ is arc-transitive then the exception pair $(G,T)=(A_{17},A_{18})$ or $(A_{35},A_{36})$.

We initiate a study of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of an $n$-ary generalization of the free Lie algebra, which we call a free LAnKe. Our central result is that the representation of the symmetric group $S_{2n-1}$ on the multilinear component of the free LAnKe with $2n-1$ generators is given by an irreducible representation whose dimension is the $n$th Catalan number. This leads to a more general result on eigenspaces of a certain linear operator, which has additional consequences. We also obtain a new presentation of Specht modules of staircase shape as a consequence of our central result.

We establish a bijective correspondence between certain non-self-intersecting curves in an $n$-punctured disc and positive ${\mathbf c}$-vectors of acyclic cluster algebras whose quivers have multiple arrows between every pair of vertices. As a corollary, we obtain a proof of a conjecture by K.-H. Lee and K. Lee (arXiv:1703.09113) on the combinatorial description of real Schur roots for acyclic quivers with multiple arrows, and give a combinatorial characterization of seeds in terms of curves in an $n$-punctured disc.
Upper and lower bounds for rich lines in grids

We prove upper and lower bounds for the number of lines in general position that are rich in a Cartesian product point set. This disproves a conjecture of Solymosi and improves work of Elekes, Borenstein and Croot, and Amirkhanyan, Bush, Croot, and Pryby.
The upper bounds are based on a version of the asymmetric Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorem for group actions combined with product theorems for the affine group. The lower bounds are based on a connection between rich lines in Cartesian product sets and amenability (or expanding families of graphs in the finite field case).
As an application of our upper bounds for rich lines in grids, we give a geometric proof of the asymmetric sum-product estimates of Bourgain and Shkredov.
Self-avoiding walk on nonunimodular transitive graphs

We study self-avoiding walk on graphs whose automorphism group has a transitive nonunimodular subgroup. We prove that self-avoiding walk is ballistic, that the bubble diagram converges at criticality, and that the critical two-point function decays exponentially in the distance from the origin. This implies that the critical exponent governing the susceptibility takes its mean-field value, and hence that the number of self-avoiding walks of length $n$ is comparable to the $n$th power of the connective constant. We also prove that the same results hold for a large class of repulsive walk models with a self-intersection based interaction, including the weakly self-avoiding walk. All these results apply in particular to the product $T_k \times \mathbb{Z}^d$ of a $k$-regular tree ($k\geq 3$) with $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for which these results were previously only known for large $k$.

In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups. We also focus on the rowmotion action that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, describing it as the composition of antichain toggles. We also describe a piecewise-linear analogue of toggling to Stanley's chain polytope. We examine the connections with the piecewise-linear toggling Einstein and Propp introduced for order polytopes and prove that almost all of our results for antichain toggles extend to the piecewise-linear setting.

Let $f(n,r)$ denote the maximum number of colourings of $A \subseteq \lbrace 1,\ldots,n\rbrace$ with $r$ colours such that each colour class is sum-free. Here, a sum is a subset $\lbrace x,y,z\rbrace$ such that $x+y=z$. We show that $f(n,2) = 2^{\lceil n/2\rceil}$, and describe the extremal subsets. Further, using linear optimisation, we asymptotically determine the logarithm of $f(n,r)$ for $r \leq 5$. Similar results were obtained by Hàn and Jiménez in the setting of finite abelian groups.
Asymptotically approaching the Moore bound for diameter three by Cayley graphs
The largest order $n(d,k)$ of a graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $k$ cannot exceed the Moore bound, which has the form $M(d,k)=d^k - O(d^{k-1})$ for $d\to\infty$ and any fixed $k$. Known results in finite geometries on generalised $(k+1)$-gons imply, for $k=2,3,5$, the existence of an infinite sequence of values of $d$ such that $n(d,k)=d^k - o(d^k)$. This shows that for $k=2,3,5$ the Moore bound can be asymptotically approached in the sense that $n(d,k)/M(d,k)\to 1$ as $d\to\infty$; moreover, no such result is known for any other value of $k\ge 2$. The corresponding graphs are, however, far from vertex-transitive, and there appears to be no obvious way to extend them to vertex-transitive graphs giving the same type of asymptotic result.
The second and the third author (2012) proved by a direct construction that the Moore bound for diameter $k=2$ can be asymptotically approached by Cayley graphs. Subsequently, the first and the third author (2015) showed that the same construction can be derived from generalised triangles with polarity.
By a detailed analysis of regular orbits of suitable groups of automorphisms of graphs arising from polarity quotients of incidence graphs of generalised quadrangles with polarity, we prove that for an infinite set of values of $d$ there exist Cayley graphs of degree $d$, diameter $3$, and order $d^3{-}O(d^{2.5})$. The Moore bound for diameter $3$ can thus as well be asymptotically approached by Cayley graphs. We also show that this method does not extend to constructing Cayley graphs of diameter $5$ from generalised hexagons with polarity.
