The Davenport constant is one measure for how "large" a finite abelian group is. In particular, the Davenport constant of an abelian group is the smallest $k$ such that any sequence of length $k$ is reducible. This definition extends naturally to commutative semigroups, and has been studied in certain finite commutative rings. In this paper, we give an exact formula for the Davenport constant of a general commutative ring in terms of its unit group.

We investigate a poset structure that extends the weak order on a finite Coxeter group $W$ to the set of all faces of the permutahedron of $W$. We call this order the facial weak order. We first provide two alternative characterizations of this poset: a first one, geometric, that generalizes the notion of inversion sets of roots, and a second one, combinatorial, that uses comparisons of the minimal and maximal length representatives of the cosets. These characterizations are then used to show that the facial weak order is in fact a lattice, generalizing a well-known result of A. Björner for the classical weak order. Finally, we show that any lattice congruence of the classical weak order induces a lattice congruence of the facial weak order, and we give a geometric interpretation of their classes. As application, we describe the facial boolean lattice on the faces of the cube and the facial Cambrian lattice on the faces of the corresponding generalized associahedron.

We consider quasirandom properties for Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups. We show that having uniform edge-distribution (i.e., small discrepancy) and having large eigenvalue gap are equivalent properties for such Cayley graphs, even if they are sparse. This positively answers a question of Chung and Graham ["Sparse quasi-random graphs", Combinatorica 22 (2002), no. 2, 217-244] for the particular case of Cayley graphs of abelian groups, while in general the answer is negative.

In this paper we study finite groups which have Cayley isomorphism property with respect to Cayley maps, CIM-groups for a brief. We show that the structure of the CIM-groups is very restricted. It is described in Theorem~\ref{111015a} where a short list of possible candidates for CIM-groups is given. Theorem~\ref{111015c} provides concrete examples of infinite series of CIM-groups.
Counting configuration-free sets in groups
We provide new examples of the asymptotic counting for the number of subsets on groups of given size which are free of certain configurations. These examples include sets without solutions to equations in non-abelian groups, and linear configurations in abelian groups defined from group homomorphisms. The results are obtained by combining the methodology of hypergraph containers joint with arithmetic removal lemmas. As a consequence, random counterparts are presented as well.

In this paper we introduce, and characterize, a class of graph parameters obtained from tensor invariants of the symplectic group. These parameters are similar to partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207-227]. Yet they give a completely different class of graph invariants. We moreover show that certain evaluations of the cycle partition polynomial, as defined by Martin [P. Martin, Enumérations eulériennes dans les multigraphes et invariants de Tutte-Grothendieck, Diss. Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble-INPG; Université Joseph-Fourier-Grenoble I, 1977], give examples of graph parameters that can be obtained this way.

We establish the existence of an irreducible representation of $A_n$ whose dimension does not occur as the dimension of an irreducible representation of $S_n$, and vice versa. This proves a conjecture by Tong-Viet. The main ingredient in the proof is a result on large prime factors in short intervals.
Cyclopermutohedron: geometry and topology

The face poset of the permutohedron realizes the combinatorics of linearly ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$. Similarly, the cyclopermutohedron is a virtual polytope that realizes the combinatorics of cyclically ordered partitions of the set $[n+1]$. The cyclopermutohedron was introduced by the third author by motivations coming from configuration spaces of polygonal linkages. In the paper we prove two facts: (1) the volume of the cyclopermutohedron equals zero, and (2) the homology groups $H_k$ for $k=0,...,n-2$ of the face poset of the cyclopermutohedron are non-zero free abelian groups. We also present a short formula for their ranks.
The Berenstein-Zelevinsky quantum cluster algebra conjecture

We prove the Berenstein-Zelevinsky conjecture that the quantized coordinate rings of the double Bruhat cells of all finite dimensional simple algebraic groups admit quantum cluster algebra structures with initial seeds as specified by [4]. We furthermore prove that the corresponding upper quantum cluster algebras coincide with the constructed quantum cluster algebras and exhibit a large number of explicit quantum seeds. Along the way a detailed study of the properties of quantum double Bruhat cells from the viewpoint of noncommutative UFDs is carried out and a quantum analog of the Fomin-Zelevinsky twist map is constructed and investigated for all double Bruhat cells. The results are valid over base fields of arbitrary characteristic and the deformation parameter is only assumed to be a non-root of unity.
The Real-rootedness of Generalized Narayana Polynomials

In this paper, we prove the real-rootedness of two classes of generalized Narayana polynomials: one arising as the $h$-polynomials of the generalized associahedron associated to the finite Weyl groups, the other arising in the study of the infinite log-concavity of the Boros-Moll polynomials. For the former, Brändén has already proved that these $h$-polynomials have only real zeros. We establish certain recurrence relations for the two classes of Narayana polynomials, from which we derive the real-rootedness. To prove the real-rootedness, we use a sufficient condition, due to Liu and Wang, to determine whether two polynomials have interlaced zeros. The recurrence relations are verified with the help of the Mathematica package \textit{HolonomicFunctions}.

In this paper we look at the automorphisms of the multiplicative group of finite nearfields. We find partial results for the actual automorphism groups. We find counting techniques for the size of all finite nearfields. We then show that these results can be used in order to count the number of near vector spaces of a given dimension over a given nearfield, up to isomorphism.

We show that given a finitely generated LERF group $G$ with positive rank gradient, and finitely generated subgroups $A,B \leq G$ of infinite index, one can find a finite index subgroup $B_0$ of $B$ such that $[G : \langle A \cup B_0 \rangle] = \infty$. This generalizes a theorem of Olshanskii on free groups. We conclude that a finite product of finitely generated subgroups of infinite index does not cover $G$. We construct a transitive virtually faithful action of $G$ such that the orbits of finitely generated subgroups of infinite index are finite. Some of the results extend to profinite groups with positive rank gradient.

This paper surveys some combinatorial aspects of Smith normal form, and more generally, diagonal form. The discussion includes general algebraic properties and interpretations of Smith normal form, critical groups of graphs, and Smith normal form of random integer matrices. We then give some examples of Smith normal form and diagonal form arising from (1) symmetric functions, (2) a result of Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville, and (3) the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement.
Classification of k-nets

A finite \emph{$k$-net} of order $n$ is an incidence structure consisting of $k\ge 3$ pairwise disjoint classes of lines, each of size $n$, such that every point incident with two lines from distinct classes is incident with exactly one line from each of the $k$ classes. Deleting a line class from a $k$-net, with $k\ge 4$, gives a \emph{derived} ($k-1$)-net of the same order.
Finite $k$-nets embedded in a projective plane $PG(2,K)$ coordinatized by a field $K$ of characteristic $0$ only exist for $k=3,4$, see \cite{knp_k}. In this paper, we investigate $3$-nets embedded in $PG(2,K)$ whose line classes are in perspective position with an axis $r$, that is, every point on the line $r$ incident with a line of the net is incident with exactly one line from each class. The problem of determining all such $3$-nets remains open whereas we obtain a complete classification for those coordinatizable by a group. As a corollary, the (unique) $4$-net of order $3$ embedded in $PG(2,K)$ turns out to be the only $4$-net embedded in $PG(2,K)$ with a derived $3$-net which can be coordinatized by a group. Our results hold true in positive characteristic under the hypothesis that the order of the $k$-net considered is smaller than the characteristic of $K$.
Expansion of polynomial Lie group integrals in terms of certain maps on surfaces, and factorizations of permutations

Using the diagrammatic approach to integrals over Gaussian random matrices, we find a representation for polynomial Lie group integrals as infinite sums over certain maps on surfaces. The maps involved satisfy a specific condition: they have some marked vertices, and no closed walks that avoid these vertices. We also formulate our results in terms of permutations, arriving at new kinds of factorization problems.
Generalized nil-Coxeter algebras over discrete complex reflection groups

We define and study generalized nil-Coxeter algebras associated to Coxeter groups. Motivated by a question of Coxeter (1957), we construct the first examples of such finite-dimensional algebras that are not the 'usual' nil-Coxeter algebras: a novel 2-parameter type $A$ family that we call $NC_A(n,d)$. We explore several combinatorial properties of $NC_A(n,d)$, including its Coxeter word basis, length function, and Hilbert-Poincare series, and show that the corresponding generalized Coxeter group is not a flat deformation of $NC_A(n,d)$. These algebras yield symmetric semigroup module categories that are necessarily not monoidal; we write down their Tannaka-Krein duality.
Further motivated by the Broue-Malle-Rouquier (BMR) freeness conjecture [J. reine angew. math. 1998], we define generalized nil-Coxeter algebras over all discrete real or complex reflection groups $W$, finite or infinite. We provide a complete classification of all such algebras that are finite-dimensional. Remarkably, these turn out to be either the usual nil-Coxeter algebras, or the algebras $NC_A(n,d)$. This proves as a special case - and strengthens - the lack of equidimensional nil-Coxeter analogues for finite complex reflection groups. In particular, generic Hecke algebras are not flat deformations of $NC_W$ for $W$ complex.

We consider the symmetry group of a $Z_2Z_4$-linear code with parameters of a $1$-perfect, extended $1$-perfect, or Preparata-like code. We show that, provided the code length is greater than $16$, this group consists only of symmetries that preserve the $Z_2Z_4$ structure. We find the orders of the symmetry groups of the $Z_2Z_4$-linear (extended) $1$-perfect codes. Keywords: additive codes, $Z_2Z_4$-linear codes, $1$-perfect codes, Preparata-like codes, automorphism group, symmetry group.

Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The transition matrix of $G$ is denoted by $H(t)$ and it is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(itA\right)},\;t\in\mathbb{R}.$ The graph $G$ has perfect state transfer (PST) from a vertex $u$ to another vertex $v$ if there exist $τ\left(\neq0\right)\in\mathbb{R}$ such that the $uv$-th entry of $H(τ)$ has unit modulus. In case when $u=v$, we say that $G$ is periodic at the vertex $u$ at time $τ$. The graph $G$ is said to be periodic if it is periodic at all vertices at the same time. A gcd-graph is a Cayley graph over a finite abelian group defined by greatest common divisors. We establish a sufficient condition for a gcd-graph to have periodicity and PST at $\fracπ{2}$. Using this we deduce that there exists gcd-graph having PST over an abelian group of order divisible by $4$. Also we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a class of gcd-graphs to be periodic at $π$. Using this we characterize a class of gcd-graphs not exhibiting PST at $\fracπ{2^{k}}$ for all positive integers $k$.

Let $n$ be a positive integer, $q$ be a prime power, and $V$ be a vector space of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $G := V \rtimes G_0$, where $G_0$ is an irreducible subgroup of ${\rm GL}(V)$ which is maximal by inclusion with respect to being intransitive on the set of nonzero vectors. We are interested in the class of all diameter two graphs $Γ$ that admit such a group $G$ as an arc-transitive, vertex-quasiprimitive subgroup of automorphisms. In particular, we consider those graphs for which $G_0$ is a subgroup of either ${\rm ΓL}(n,q)$ or ${\rm ΓSp}(n,q)$ and is maximal in one of the Aschbacher classes $\mathcal{C}_i$, where $i \in \{2,4,5,6,7,8\}$. We are able to determine all graphs $Γ$ which arise from $G_0 \leq {\rm ΓL}(n,q)$ with $i \in \{2,4,8\}$, and from $G_0 \leq {\rm ΓSp}(n,q)$ with $i \in \{2,8\}$. For the remaining classes we give necessary conditions in order for $Γ$ to have diameter two, and in some special subcases determine all $G$-symmetric diameter two graphs.
Topologically $4$-chromatic graphs and signatures of odd cycles

We investigate group-theoretic "signatures" of odd cycles of a graph, and their connections to topological obstructions to 3-colourability. In the case of signatures derived from free groups, we prove that the existence of an odd cycle with trivial signature is equivalent to having the coindex of the hom-complex at least 2 (which implies that the chromatic number is at least 4). In the case of signatures derived from elementary abelian 2-groups we prove that the existence of an odd cycle with trivial signature is a sufficient condition for having the index of the hom-complex at least 2 (which again implies that the chromatic number is at least 4).
