Commutativity pattern of finite non-abelian $p$-groups determine their orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a non-abelian group and $Z(G)$ be the center of $G$. Associate a graph $Γ_G$ (called non-commuting graph of $G$) with $G$ as follows: take $G\setminus Z(G)$ as the vertices of $Γ_G$ and join two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$, whenever $xy\neq yx$. Here, we prove that "the commutativity pattern of a finite non-abelian $p$-group determine its order among the class of groups"; this means that if $P$ is a finite non-abelian $p$-group such that $Γ_P\cong Γ_H$ for some group $H$, then $|P|=|H|$.

A Mathematical Approach to Balanced Tanner Graph Enumeration
This paper summarizes our latest understanding and results about the application of the Mathematics Of Enumeration to Tanner Graphs that have a regular structure called Balanced Tanner Graphs. Some preliminaries of permutation groups have been presented followed by various enumeration theorems, and finally our approach for enumeration of Balanced Tanner Graphs has been explained, and several open questions have been raised.

From the Tamari lattice to Cambrian lattices and beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this chapter, we trace the path from the Tamari lattice, via lattice congruences of the weak order, to the definition of Cambrian lattices in the context of finite Coxeter groups, and onward to the construction of Cambrian fans. We then present sortable elements, the key combinatorial tool for studying Cambrian lattices and fans. The chapter concludes with a brief description of the applications of Cambrian lattices and sortable elements to Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics and to cluster algebras.

On the algebraic representation of selected optimal non-linear binary codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Revisiting an approach by Conway and Sloane we investigate a collection of optimal non-linear binary codes and represent them as (non-linear) codes over Z4. The Fourier transform will be used in order to analyze these codes, which leads to a new algebraic representation involving subgroups of the group of units in a certain ring. One of our results is a new representation of Best's (10, 40, 4) code as a coset of a subgroup in the group of invertible elements of the group ring Z4[Z5]. This yields a particularly simple algebraic decoding algorithm for this code. The technique at hand is further applied to analyze Julin's (12, 144, 4) code and the (12, 24, 12) Hadamard code. It can also be used in order to construct a (non-optimal) binary (14, 56, 6) code.

The number of flags in finite vector spaces: Asymptotic normality and Mahonian statistics
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 37 (2013), 361-380 • View PublicationBIB
We study the generalized Galois numbers which count flags of length r in N-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We prove that the coefficients of those polynomials are asymptotically Gaussian normally distributed as N becomes large. Furthermore, we interpret the generalized Galois numbers as weighted inversion statistics on the descent classes of the symmetric group on N elements and identify their asymptotic limit as the Mahonian inversion statistic when r approaches infinity. Finally, we apply our statements to derive further statistical aspects of generalized Rogers-Szegoe polynomials, re-interpret the asymptotic behavior of linear q-ary codes and characters of the symmetric group acting on subspaces over finite fields, and discuss implications for affine Demazure modules and joint probability generating functions of descent-inversion statistics.

Small asymmetric sumsets in elementary abelian 2-groups
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 313, Issue 5, March 2013, Pages 689--692 • View PublicationBIB
Let A and B be subsets of an elementary abelian 2-group G, none of which are contained in a coset of a proper subgroup. Extending onto potentially distinct summands a result of Hennecart and Plagne, we show that if |A+B|<|A|+|B|, then either A+B=G, or the complement of A+B in G is contained in a coset of a subgroup of index at least 8, whence |A+B| is at least 7/8 |G|. We indicate conditions for the containment to be strict, and establish a refinement in the case where the sizes of A and B differ significantly.

On the diameter of permutation groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite group $G$ and a set $A$ of generators, the diameter diam$(Γ(G,A))$ of the Cayley graph $Γ(G,A)$ is the smallest $\ell$ such that every element of $G$ can be expressed as a word of length at most $\ell$ in $A \cup A^{-1}$. We are concerned with bounding diam(G):= $\max_A$ diam$(Γ(G,A))$. It has long been conjectured that the diameter of the symmetric group of degree $n$ is polynomially bounded in $n$, but the best previously known upper bound was exponential in $\sqrt{n \log n}$. We give a quasipolynomial upper bound, namely, \[\text{diam}(G) = \exp(O((\log n)^4 \log\log n)) = \exp((\log \log |G|)^{O(1)})\] for G = Sym(n) or G = \Alt(n), where the implied constants are absolute. This addresses a key open case of Babai's conjecture on diameters of simple groups. By standard results, our bound also implies a quasipolynomial upper bound on the diameter of all transitive permutation groups of degree $n$.

Zonal Polynomials and Quantum Antisymmetric Matrices
Published in Bull. Inst. Math. Acad. Sinica (New Ser.) 7 (2012), 1-31 • Search Publication
We study the quantum symmetric spaces for quantum general linear groups modulo symplectic groups. We first determine the structure of the quotient quantum group and completely determine the quantum invariants. We then derive the characteristic property for quantum Phaffian as well as its role in the quantum invariant sub-ring. The spherical functions, viewed as Macdonald polynomials, are also studied as the quantum analog of zonal spherical polynomials.

Euler-Mahonian Statistics via Polyhedral Geometry
Published in Advances in Mathematics 244 (2013), 925-954 • View PublicationBIB
A variety of descent and major-index statistics have been defined for symmetric groups, hyperoctahedral groups, and their generalizations. Typically associated to pairs of such statistics is an Euler--Mahonian distribution, a bivariate generating function identity encoding these statistics. We use techniques from polyhedral geometry to establish new multivariate generalizations for many of the known Euler--Mahonian distributions. The original bivariate distributions are then straightforward specializations of these multivariate identities. A consequence of these new techniques are bijective proofs of the equivalence of the bivariate distributions for various pairs of statistics.

Diameter Perfect Lee Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Vol 58, No 8, pp. 5490--5499, August 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Lee codes have been intensively studied for more than 40 years. Interest in these codes has been triggered by the Golomb-Welch conjecture on the existence of the perfect error-correcting Lee codes. In this paper we deal with the existence and enumeration of diameter perfect Lee codes. As main results we determine all $q$ for which there exists a linear diameter-4 perfect Lee code of word length $n$ over $Z_{q},$ and prove that for each $n\geq 3$ there are uncountable many diameter-4 perfect Lee codes of word length $n$ over $Z.$ This is in a strict contrast with perfect error-correcting Lee codes of word length $n$ over $Z\,$\ as there is a unique such code for $n=3,$ and its is conjectured that this is always the case when $2n+1$ is a prime. We produce diameter perfect Lee codes by an algebraic construction that is based on a group homomorphism. This will allow us to design an efficient algorithm for their decoding. We hope that this construction will turn out to be useful far beyond the scope of this paper.

Stein's method, heat kernel, and linear functions on the orthogonal groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combining Stein's method with heat kernel techniques, we study the function Tr(AO), where A is a fixed n by n real matrix over such that Tr(AA^t)=n, and O is from the Haar measure of the orthogonal group O(n,R). It is shown that the total variation distance of the random variable Tr(AO) to a standard normal random variable is bounded by 2 * squareroot(2) /(n-1), slightly improving the constant in a bound of Meckes, which was obtained by completely different methods.

On the asymptotic maximal density of a set avoiding solutions to linear equations modulo a prime
Published in Acta Math. Hungar. 132 (3) (2011), 223--243 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite family F of linear forms with integer coefficients, and a compact abelian group G, an F-free set in G is a measurable set which does not contain solutions to any equation L(x)=0 for L in F. We denote by d_F(G) the supremum of m(A) over F-free sets A in G, where m is the normalized Haar measure on G. Our main result is that, for any such collection F of forms in at least three variables, the sequence d_F(Z_p) converges to d_F(R/Z) as p tends to infinity over primes. This answers an analogue for Z_p of a question that Ruzsa raised about sets of integers.

On the Size of Equifacetted Semi-Regular Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unlike the situation in the classical theory of convex polytopes, there is a wealth of semi-regular abstract polytopes, including interesting examples exhibiting some unexpected phenomena. We prove that even an equifacetted semi-regular abstract polytope can have an arbitrary large number of flag orbits or face orbits under its combinatorial automorphism group.

Semiregular Polytopes and Amalgamated C-groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the classical setting, a convex polytope is said to be semiregular if its facets are regular and its symmetry group is transitive on vertices. This paper studies semiregular abstract polytopes, which have abstract regular facets, still with combinatorial automorphism group transitive on vertices. We analyze the structure of the automorphism group, focusing in particular on polytopes with two kinds of regular facets occurring in an "alternating" fashion. In particular we use group amalgamations to prove that given two compatible n-polytopes P and Q, there exists a universal abstract semiregular (n+1)-polytope which is obtained by "freely" assembling alternate copies of P and Q. We also employ modular reduction techniques to construct finite semiregular polytopes from reflection groups over finite fields.

The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 230 (2012), 1738-1779 • View PublicationBIB
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

Counting dimer coverings on self-similar Schreier graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 33, Issue 7 (2012), 1484-1513 • View PublicationBIB
We study partition functions for the dimer model on families of finite graphs converging to infinite self-similar graphs and forming approximation sequences to certain well-known fractals. The graphs that we consider are provided by actions of finitely generated groups by automorphisms on rooted trees, and thus their edges are naturally labeled by the generators of the group. It is thus natural to consider weight functions on these graphs taking different values according to the labeling. We study in detail the well-known example of the Hanoi Towers group $H^{(3)}$, closely related to the Sierpiński gasket.

Multi-orientable Group Field Theory
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 165401 • View PublicationBIB
Group Field Theories (GFT) are quantum field theories over group manifolds; they can be seen as a generalization of matrix models. GFT Feynman graphs are tensor graphs generalizing ribbon graphs (or combinatorial maps); these graphs are dual not only to manifolds. In order to simplify the topological structure of these various singularities, colored GFT was recently introduced and intensively studied since. We propose here a different simplification of GFT, which we call multi-orientable GFT. We study the relation between multi-orientable GFT Feynman graphs and colorable graphs. We prove that tadfaces and some generalized tadpoles are absent. Some Feynman amplitude computations are performed. A few remarks on the renormalizability of both multi-orientable and colorable GFT are made. A generalization from three-dimensional to four-dimensional theories is also proposed.

Plünnecke and Kneser type theorems for dimension estimates
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a division ring K containing the field k in its center and A,B two finite subsets of K\{0}, we give some analogues of Plünnecke and Kneser theorems for the dimension of the k-linear span of the Minkowski product AB in terms of the dimensions of the k-linear spans of A and B. These Plünnecke type estimates are then generalized to the case of associative algebras. We also obtain an analogue in the context of division rings of a theorem by Tao classifying the sets of small doubling in a group.
