Generators of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors and Young symmetrizers
Published in In: Leading-Edge Computer Science, S. Shannon (ed.), Nova Science Publishers, Inc. New York, 2006. pp. 219-239. ISBN: 1-59454-526-X • Search Publication
We show that the space of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors R' is generated by Young symmetrized tensor products W*U or U*W, where W and U are covariant tensors of order 2 and 3 whose symmetry classes are irreducible and characterized by the following pairs of partitions: {(2),(3)}, {(2),(2 1)} or {(1 1),(2 1)}. Each of the partitions (2), (3) and (1 1) describes exactly one symmetry class, whereas the partition (2 1) characterizes an infinite set S of irreducible symmetry classes. This set S contains exactly one symmetry class S_0 whose elements U can not play the role of generators of tensors R'. The tensors U of all other symmetry classes from S\{S_0} can be used as generators for tensors R'. Foundation of our investigations is a theorem of S. A. Fulling, R. C. King, B. G. Wybourne and C. J. Cummins about a Young symmetrizer that generates the symmetry class of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors. Furthermore we apply ideals and idempotents in group rings C[Sr], the Littlewood-Richardson rule and discrete Fourier transforms for symmetric groups Sr. For certain symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages Ricci and PERMS.

Elementary divisors of Specht modules
Let H_q(S_n) be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is semisimple over the rational function field Q(q), where q is an indeterminate, and its irreducible representations over this field are q-analogues S_q(lambda) of the Specht modules of the symmetric group. The q-Specht modules have an "integral form" which is defined over the Laurent polynomial ring Z_[q,q^{-1}] and they come equipped with a natural bilinear form with values in this ring. Now Z[q,q^{-1}] is not a principal ideal domain. Nonetheless, we try to compute the elementary divisors of the Gram matrix of the bilinear form on S_q(lambda). When they are defined, we give a precise relationship between the elementary divisors of the Specht modules S_q(lambda) and S_q(lambda'), where lambda' is the conjugate partition. We also compute the elementary divisors when lambda is a hook partition and give examples to show that in general elementary divisors do not exist.

When does the associated graded Lie algebra of an arrangement group decompose?
Published in Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici 81 (2006), no. 4, 859-875 • View PublicationBIB
Let \A be a complex hyperplane arrangement, with fundamental group G and holonomy Lie algebra \H. Suppose \H_3 is a free abelian group of minimum possible rank, given the values the Möbius function μ: Ł_2\to \Z takes on the rank 2 flats of \A. Then the associated graded Lie algebra of G decomposes (in degrees 2 and higher) as a direct product of free Lie algebras. In particular, the ranks of the lower central series quotients of the group are given by φ_r(G)=\sum_{X\in Ł_2} φ_r(F_{μ(X)}), for r\ge 2. We illustrate this new Lower Central Series formula with several families of examples.

The Number of Nowhere-Zero Flows on Graphs and Signed Graphs
Published in J. Combinatorial Th. Ser. B 96, no. 6 (2006), 901-918 • View PublicationBIB
A nowhere-zero $k$-flow on a graph $Γ$ is a mapping from the edges of $Γ$ to the set $\{\pm1, \pm2, ..., \pm(k-1)\} \subset \bbZ$ such that, in any fixed orientation of $Γ$, at each node the sum of the labels over the edges pointing towards the node equals the sum over the edges pointing away from the node. We show that the existence of an \emph{integral flow polynomial} that counts nowhere-zero $k$-flows on a graph, due to Kochol, is a consequence of a general theory of inside-out polytopes. The same holds for flows on signed graphs. We develop these theories, as well as the related counting theory of nowhere-zero flows on a signed graph with values in an abelian group of odd order. Our results are of two kinds: polynomiality or quasipolynomiality of the flow counting functions, and reciprocity laws that interpret the evaluations of the flow polynomials at negative integers in terms of the combinatorics of the graph.

Transformations of elliptic hypergometric integrals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a pair of transformations relating elliptic hypergeometric integrals of different dimensions, corresponding to the root systems BC_n and A_n; as a special case, we recover some integral identities conjectured by van Diejen and Spiridonov. For BC_n, we also consider their "Type II" integral. Their proof of that integral, together with our transformation, gives rise to pairs of adjoint integral operators; a different proof gives rise to pairs of adjoint difference operators. These allow us to construct a family of biorthogonal abelian functions generalizing the Koornwinder polynomials, and satisfying the analogues of the Macdonald conjectures. Finally, we discuss some transformations of Type II-style integrals. In particular, we find that adding two parameters to the Type II integral gives an integral invariant under an appropriate action of the Weyl group E_7.

Subword complexes in Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let (Π,Σ) be a Coxeter system. An ordered list of elements in Σand an element in Πdetermine a {\em subword complex}, as introduced in our paper on Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials (math.AG/0110058). Subword complexes are demonstrated here to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres, and their Hilbert series are shown to reflect combinatorial properties of reduced expressions in Coxeter groups. Two formulae for double Grothendieck polynomials, one of which is due to Fomin and Kirillov, are recovered in the context of simplicial topology for subword complexes. Some open questions related to subword complexes are presented.

Affine Weyl groups in K-theory and representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to combinatorics of decompositions in the affine Weyl group and enumeration of saturated chains in the Bruhat order on the (nonaffine) Weyl group. Our model easily implies several symmetries of the coefficients in the Chevalley-type formula. We also derive a simple formula for multiplying an arbitrary Schubert class by a divisor class, as well as a dual Chevalley-type formula. The paper contains other applications and examples.

Flows that are sums of hamiltonian cycles in Cayley graphs on abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
If X is any connected Cayley graph on any finite abelian group, we determine precisely which flows on X can be written as a sum of hamiltonian cycles. (This answers a question of Brian Alspach.) In particular, if the degree of X is at least 5, and X has an even number of vertices, then the flows that can be so written are precisely the even flows, that is, the flows f, such that the sum of the edge-flows of f is divisible by 2. On the other hand, there are examples of degree 4 in which not all even flows can be written as a sum of hamiltonian cycles. Analogous results were already known, from work of Alspach, Locke, and Witte, for the case where X is cubic, or has an odd number of vertices.

General duality for abelian-group-valued statistical-mechanics models
Published in J.Phys. A37 (2004) 7407-7432 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a general class of statistical-mechanics models, taking values in an abelian group, which includes examples of both spin and gauge models, both ordered and disordered. The model is described by a set of ``variables'' and a set of ``interactions''. A Gibbs factor is associated to each variable and to each interaction. We introduce a duality transformation for systems in this class. The duality exchanges the abelian group with its dual, the Gibbs factors with their Fourier transforms, and the interactions with the variables. High (low) couplings in the interaction terms are mapped into low (high) couplings in the one-body terms. The idea is that our class of systems extends the one for which the classical procedure 'a la Kramers and Wannier holds, up to include randomness into the pattern of interaction. We introduce and study some physical examples: a random Gaussian Model, a random Potts-like model, and a random variant of discrete scalar QED. We shortly describe the consequence of duality for each example.

Geometric Characterization of Property R
Consider pairs of the form (G, N), with G a group and N \normal G, as objects of a category \PG. A morphism (G_1, N_1) \To (G_2, N_2) will be a group homomorphism f : G_1 \To G_2 such that f(N_1) \subset N_2. We introduce a functor Q : \PG \To \Groups, which provides a geometric definition of Property R, since it is most naturally visualized by means of a directed graph. We compute these graphs for a number of finite groups of small order, and prove a general characterization of the graphs which occur in this way.

On the topology of graph picture spaces
Published in Adv. Math. 191, no. 2 (2005), 312--338 • View PublicationBIB
We study the space ${\mathcal X}^{d}(G)$ of pictures of a graph $G$ in complex projective $d$-space. The main result is that the homology groups (with integer coefficients) of ${\mathcal X}^{d}(G)$ are completely determined by the Tutte polynomial of $G$. One application is a criterion in terms of the Tutte polynomial for independence in the {\it $d$-parallel matroids} studied in combinatorial rigidity theory. For certain special graphs called \defterm{orchards}, the picture space is smooth and has the structure of an iterated projective bundle. We give a Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of the picture space of an orchard, and use this presentation to develop an analogue of the classical Schubert calculus.

Groups, periodic planes and hyperbolic buildings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary construction of polyhedra whose links are connected bipartite graphs, which are not necessarily isomorphic pairwise. We show, that the fundamental groups of some of our polyhedra contain surface groups. In particular, we construct polyhedra whose links are generalized $m$-gons. The polyhedra of this type are interesting because of their universal coverings, which are two-dimensional hyperbolic buildings with different links. The presentation of the results is done in the language of combinatorial group theory.

Representations of wreath products on cohomology of De Concini-Procesi compactifications
Published in Intern. Math. Res. Notices 2004:20 (2004), 983-1021 • Search Publication
The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

A group-theoretic approach to fast matrix multiplication
Published in Proceedings of the 44th Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science, 11-14 October 2003, Cambridge, MA, IEEE Computer Society, pp. 438-449 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a new, group-theoretic approach to bounding the exponent of matrix multiplication. There are two components to this approach: (1) identifying groups G that admit a certain type of embedding of matrix multiplication into the group algebra C[G], and (2) controlling the dimensions of the irreducible representations of such groups. We present machinery and examples to support (1), including a proof that certain families of groups of order n^(2 + o(1)) support n-by-n matrix multiplication, a necessary condition for the approach to yield exponent 2. Although we cannot yet completely achieve both (1) and (2), we hope that it may be possible, and we suggest potential routes to that result using the constructions in this paper.

o-bounded groups and other topological groups with strong combinatorial properties
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 134 (2006), 881--891 • View PublicationBIB
We construct several topological groups with very strong combinatorial properties. In particular, we give simple examples of subgroups of the real line R (thus strictly o-bounded) which have the Hurewicz property but are not sigma-compact, and show that the product of two o-bounded subgroups of R^N may fail to be o-bounded, even when they satisfy the stronger property S1(Borel_Omega,Borel_Omega). This solves a problem of Tkacenko and Hernandez, and extends independent solutions of Krawczyk and Michalewski and of Banakh, Nickolas, and Sanchis. We also construct separable metrizable groups G of size continuum such that every countable Borel omega-cover of G contains a gamma-cover of G.

Sum-free sets in abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a subset of an abelian group G. We say that A is sum-free if there do not exist x,y and z in A satisfying x + y = z. We determine, for any G, the cardinality of the largest sum-free subset of G. This equals c(G)|G| where c(G) is a constant depending on G and lying in the interval [2/7,1/2]. We also estimate the number of sum-free subsets of G. It turns out that log_2 of this number is c(G)|G| + o(|G|), which is tight up to the o-term. For certain abelian groups, those whose order is divisible by a small prime of the form 3k + 2, we can obtain an asymptotic for the number of sum-free sets.

LS-Galleries, the path model and MV-cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an interpretation of the path model of a representation \cite{Lit1} of a complex semisimple algebraic group $G$ in terms of the geometry of its affine Grassmannian. In this setting, the paths are replaced by LS--galleries in the affine Coxeter complex associated to the Weyl group of $G$. To explain the connection with geometry, consider a Demazure--Hansen--Bott--Samelson desingularization $\hatΣ(\lam)$ of the closure of an orbit $G(\bc[[t]]).\lam$ in the affine Grassmannian. The homology of $\hatΣ(\lam)$ has a basis given by Białynicki--Birula cell's, which are indexed by the $T$--fixed points in $\hatΣ(\lam)$. Now the points of $\hatΣ(\lam)$ can be identified with galleries of a fixed type in the affine Tits building associated to $G$, and the $T$--fixed points correspond in this language to combinatorial galleries of a fixed type in the affine Coxeter complex. We determine those galleries such that the associated cell has a non-empty intersection with $G(\bc[[t]]).\lam$ (identified with an open subset of $\hatΣ(\lam)$), and we show that the closures of the strata associated to LS-galleries are exactly the MV--cycles \cite{MV}, which form a basis of the representation $V(\lam)$ for the Langland's dual group $G^\vee$.
