Combinatorial formulas for arithmetic density
Published in Integers 22, Article A63 (2022) • Search Publication
Let $d_S$ denote the arithmetic density of a subset $S \subseteq \mathbb N$. We derive a power series in $q\in \mathbb C$, $|q|<1$, with coëfficients related to integer partitions and integer compositions, that yields $1/d_S$ in the limit as $q\to 1$ radially.

The Gini Index in Algebraic Combinatorics and Representation Theory
The Gini index is a number that attempts to measure how equitably a resource is distributed throughout a population, and is commonly used in economics as a measurement of inequality of wealth or income. The Gini index is often defined as the area between the "Lorenz curve" of a distribution and the line of equality, normalized to be between zero and one. In this fashion, we will define a Gini index on the set of integer partitions and prove some combinatorial results related to it; culminating in the proof of an identity for the expected value of the Gini index. We will then discuss symmetric polynomials, and show that the Gini index can be understood as the degrees of certain Kostka-foulkes polynomials. This identification yields a generalization whereby we may define a Gini index on the irreducible representations of a complex reflection group, or connected reductive linear algebraic group.

Distributions of Hook lengths in integer partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the many roles that hook lengths play in mathematics, we study the distribution of the number of $t$-hooks in the partitions of $n$. We prove that the limiting distribution is normal with mean $μ_t(n)\sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π-\frac{t}{2}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n)\sim \frac{(π^2-6)\sqrt{6n}}{2π^3}.$ Furthermore, we prove that the distribution of the number of hook lengths that are multiples of a fixed $t\geq 4$ in partitions of $n$ converge to a shifted Gamma distribution with parameter $k=(t-1)/2$ and scale $θ=\sqrt{2/(t-1)}.$

In this paper, we first provide an analytic and a bijective proof of a formula stated by Vladeta Jovovic in the OEIS sequence A117989. We also provide a bijective proof of another interesting result stated by him on the same page concerning integer partitions with fixed differences between the largest and smallest parts.

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.
Computational study of non-unitary partitions
Published in Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society 38 (2023) 121--128 • Search Publication
Following Cayley, MacMahon, and Sylvester, define a non-unitary partition to be an integer partition with no part equal to one, and let $ν(n)$ denote the number of non-unitary partitions of size $n$. In a 2021 paper, the sixth author proved a formula to compute $p(n)$ by enumerating only non-unitary partitions of size $n$, and recorded a number of conjectures regarding the growth of $ν(n)$ as $n\to \infty$. Here we refine and prove some of these conjectures. For example, we prove $p(n) \sim ν(n)\sqrt{n/ζ(2)}$ as $n\to \infty$, and give Ramanujan-like congruences between $p(n)$ and $ν(n)$ such as $p(5n)\equiv ν(5n)\ (\operatorname{mod} 5)$.

Set partitions, tableaux, and subspace profiles under regular diagonal matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Asymptotics for the twisted eta-product and applications to sign changes in partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove asymptotic formulas for the complex coefficients of $(ζq;q)_\infty^{-1}$, where $ζ$ is a root of unity, and apply our results to determine secondary terms in the asymptotics for $p(a,b,n)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ with largest part congruent $a$ modulo $b$. Our results imply that, as $n \to \infty$, the difference $p(a_1,b,n)-p(a_2,b,n)$ for $a_1 \neq a_2$ oscillates like a cosine, when renormalized by elementary functions. Moreover, we give asymptotic formulas for arbitrary linear combinations of $\{p(a,b,n)\}_{1 \leq a \leq b}$.

Linked partition ideals and the Alladi--Schur theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathscr{S}$ denote the set of integer partitions into parts that differ by at least $3$, with the added constraint that no two consecutive multiples of $3$ occur as parts. We derive trivariate generating functions of Andrews--Gordon type for partitions in $\mathscr{S}$ with both the number of parts and the number of even parts counted. In particular, we provide an analytic counterpart of Andrews' recent refinement of the Alladi--Schur theorem.

Eventual log-concavity of $k$-rank statistics for integer partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $N_k(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with Garvan $k$-rank $m$. It is well-known that Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank are the $k$-rank for $k=1$ and $k=2$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that the sequence $\{N_k(m,n)\}_{|m|\le n-k-71}$ is log-concave for all sufficiently large $n$ and each integer $k$. In particular, we partially solve the log-concavity conjecture for Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank, which was independently proposed by Bringmann-Jennings-Shaffer-Mahlburg and Ji-Zang.

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

On the Number of 2-Hooks and 3-Hooks of Integer Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p_t(a,b;n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ such that the number of $t$ hooks is congruent to $a \bmod{b}$. For $t\in \{2, 3\}$, arithmetic progressions $r_1 \bmod{m_1}$ and $r_2 \bmod{m_2}$ on which $p_t(r_1,m_1; m_2 n + r_2)$ vanishes were established in recent work by Bringmann, Craig, Males, and Ono using the theory of modular forms. Here we offer a direct combinatorial proof of this result using abaci and the theory of $t$-cores and $t$-quotients.

Combinatorial Perspectives on the Crank and Mex Partition Statistics
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 29 (2022) P2.11 • View PublicationBIB
Several authors have recently considered the smallest positive part missing from an integer partition, known as the minimum excludant or mex. In this work, we revisit and extend connections between Dyson's crank statistics, the mex, and Frobenius symbols, with a focus on combinatorial proof techniques. One highlight is a generating function expression for the number of partitions with a bounded crank that does not include an alternating sum. This leads to a combinatorial interpretation involving types of Durfee rectangles.

Derivatives and Integrals of Polynomials Associated with Integer Partitions
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 25 (2022), Article 22.5.1 • Search Publication
Integer partitions express the different ways that a positive integer may be written as a sum of positive integers. Here we explore the analytic properties of a new polynomial $f_λ(x)$ that we call the partition polynomial for the partition $λ$, with the aim to learn new properties of partitions. We prove a recursive formula for the derivatives of $f_λ(x)$ involving Stirling numbers of the second kind, show that the set of integrals from 0 to 1 of a normalized version of $f_λ(x)$ is dense in $[0,1/2]$, pose a few open questions, and formulate a conjecture relating the integral to the length of the partition. We also provide specific examples throughout to support our speculation that an in-depth analysis of partition polynomials could further strengthen our understanding of partitions.

Multiplication theorems for self-conjugate partitions
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 2(2) (2022) #13, pp.32 • View PublicationBIB
In 2011, Han and Ji proved addition-multiplication theorems for integer partitions, from which they derived modular analogues of many classical identities involving hook-length. In the present paper, we prove addition-multiplication theorems for the subset of self-conjugate partitions. Although difficulties arise due to parity questions, we are almost always able to include the BG-rank introduced by Berkovich and Garvan. This gives us as consequences many self-conjugate modular versions of classical hook-lengths identities for partitions. Our tools are mainly based on fine properties of the Littlewood decomposition restricted to self-conjugate partitions.

Enumerating partitions arising in homotopy theory

We present an infinite family of recursive formulas that count binary integer partitions satisfying natural divisibility conditions and show that these counts are interrelated via partial sums. Moreover, we interpret the partitions we study in the language of graded polynomial rings and apply this to the mod $2$ Steenrod algebra to compute the free rank of certain homology modules in stable homotopy theory.

Generating series of non-oriented constellations and marginal sums in the Matching-Jack conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the description of hypermaps with matchings, Goulden and Jackson have given an expression of the generating series of rooted bipartite maps in terms of the zonal polynomials. We generalize this approach to the case of constellations on non-oriented surfaces that have recently been introduced by Chapuy and Dołęga. A key step in the proof is an encoding of constellations with tuples of matchings. We consider a one parameter deformation of the generating series of constellations using Jack polynomials and we introduce the coefficients $c^λ_{μ^0,...,μ^k}(b)$ obtained by the expansion of these functions in the power-sum basis. These coefficients are indexed by $k+2$ integer partitions and the deformation parameter $b$, and can be considered as a generalization for $k\geq1$ of the connection coefficients introduced by Goulden and Jackson. We prove that when we take some marginal sums, these coefficients enumerate $b$-weighted $k$-tuples of matchings. This can be seen as an "unrooted" version of a recent result of Chapuy and Dołęga for constellations. For $k=1$, this gives a partial answer to Goulden and Jackson Matching-Jack conjecture. Lassale has formulated a positivity conjecture for the coefficients $θ^{(α)}_μ(λ)$, defined as the coefficient of the Jack polynomial $J_λ^{(α)}$ in the power-sum basis. We use the second main result of this paper to give a proof of this conjecture in the case of partitions $λ$ with rectangular shape.
Product Expansions of q-Character Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The ring of q-character polynomials is a q-analog of the classical ring of character polynomials for the symmetric groups. This ring consists of certain class functions defined simultaneously on the groups $Gl_n(F_q)$ for all n, which we also interpret as statistics on matrices. Here we evaluate these statistics on all matrices and work towards computing the structure constants of the product in this ring. We show that the statistics are periodically polynomial in q, and governed by universal polynomials $P_{λ,μ}(q)$ which we compute explicitly, indexed by pairs of integer partitions. The product structure is similarly polynomial in q in many cases, governed by polynomials $R_{λ,μ}^ν(q)$ indexed by triples of partitions, which we compute in some cases. Our calculations seem to exhibit several unexpected patterns. Mainly, we conjecture that certain indecomposable statistics generate the whole ring, and indeed prove this for statistics associated with matrices consisting of up to 2 Jordan blocks. Furthermore, the coefficients we compute exhibit surprising stability phenomena, which in turn reflect stabilizations of joint moments as well as multiplicities in the irreducible decomposition of tensor products of representations of $Gl_n(F_q)$ for $n\gg 1$. We use this stabilization to compute the correlation of the number of unipotent Jordan blocks of two sizes.

Statistics for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.
Schur functions in noncommuting variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions. We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.
