Reflection factorizations of Singer cycles
Published in J. Alg. Comb. 40, issue 3, Nov. 2014, pp. 663-691 • View PublicationBIB
The number of shortest factorizations into reflections for a Singer cycle in GL_n(F_q) is shown to be (q^n-1)^(n - 1). Formulas counting factorizations of any length, and counting those with reflections of fixed conjugacy classes are also given. The method is a standard character-theory technique, requiring the compilation of irreducible character values for Singer cycles, semisimple reflections, and transvections. The results suggest several open problems and questions, which are discussed at the end.

We consider random character values X(g) of the symmetric group on n symbols, where X is chosen at random from the set of irreducible characters and g is chosen at random from the group, and we show that X(g)=0 with probability tending to one as n tends to infinity.

Groups whose prime graphs have no triangles
Published in Journal of Algebra 378 (2013), 196-206 • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a finite group and let cd(G) be the set of all complex irreducible character degrees of G Let ρ(G) be the set of all primes which divide some character degree of G. The prime graph Δ(G) attached to G is a graph whose vertex set is ρ(G) and there is an edge between two distinct primes u and v if and only if the product uv divides some character degree of G. In this paper, we show that if G is a finite group whose prime graph Δ(G) has no triangles, then Δ(G) has at most 5 vertices. We also obtain a classification of all finite graphs with 5 vertices and having no triangles which can occur as prime graphs of some finite groups. Finally, we show that the prime graph of a finite group can never be a cycle nor a tree with at least 5 vertices.

Permutation statistics of products of random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation statistic $s : S_n \to \mathbb{R}$, define the mean statistic $\bar{s}$ as the statistic which computes the mean of $s$ over conjugacy classes. We describe a way to calculate the expected value of $s$ on a product of $t$ independently chosen elements from the uniform distribution on a union of conjugacy classes $Γ\subseteq S_n$. In order to apply the formula, one needs to express the class function $\bar{s}$ as a linear combination of irreducible $S_n$-characters. We provide such expressions for several commonly studied permutation statistics, including the excedance number, inversion number, descent number, major index and $k$-cycle number. In particular, this leads to formulae for the expected values of said statistics.

Long Cycle Factorizations : Bijective Computation in the General Case
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the computation of the number of ordered factorizations of a long cycle in the symmetric group where the number of factors is arbitrary and the cycle structure of the factors is given. Jackson (1988) derived the first closed form expression for the generating series of these numbers using the theory of the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. Thanks to a direct bijection we compute a similar formula and provide the first purely combinatorial evaluation of these generating series.

Noncommutative irreducible characters of the symmetric group and noncommutative Schur functions
Published in J. Comb. 4:403--418 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
In the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, Sym, the basis of Schur functions is distinguished since every Schur function is isomorphic to an irreducible character of a symmetric group under the Frobenius characteristic map. In this note we show that in the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, Nsym, of which Sym is a quotient, the recently discovered basis of noncommutative Schur functions exhibits that every noncommutative Schur function is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group when working in noncommutative character theory. We simultaneously show that a second basis of Nsym consisting of Young noncommutative Schur functions also satisfies that every element is isomorphic to a noncommutative irreducible character of a symmetric group.

The Boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin Graph: New Proof of Borodin-Olshanski's Formula, and its q-analogue
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the recent paper [arXiv:1109.1412], Borodin and Olshanski have presented a novel proof of the celebrated Edrei-Voiculescu theorem which describes the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. This graph encodes branching of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional unitary groups. Points of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph can be identified with finite indecomposable (= extreme) characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. An equivalent description identifies the boundary with the set of doubly infinite totally nonnegative sequences. A principal ingredient of Borodin-Olshanski's proof is a new explicit determinantal formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). We present a simpler and more direct derivation of that formula using the Cauchy-Binet summation involving the inverse Vandermonde matrix. We also obtain a q-generalization of that formula, namely, a new explicit determinantal formula for arbitrary q-specializations of skew Schur polynomials. Its particular case is related to the q-Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and q-Toeplitz matrices introduced and studied by Gorin [arXiv:1011.1769].

How to write a permutation as a product of involutions (and why you might care)
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that any permutation can be written as a product of two involutions. We provide an explicit formula for the number of ways to do so, depending only on the cycle type of the permutation. In many cases, these numbers are sums of absolute values of irreducible characters of the symmetric group evaluated at the same permutation, although apart from the case where all cycles are the same size, we have no good explanation for why this should be so.

A simple model of trees for unicellular maps
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 120, 8 (2013) Pages 2064-2092 • View PublicationBIB
We consider unicellular maps, or polygon gluings, of fixed genus. A few years ago the first author gave a recursive bijection transforming unicellular maps into trees, explaining the presence of Catalan numbers in counting formulas for these objects. In this paper, we give another bijection that explicitly describes the "recursive part" of the first bijection. As a result we obtain a very simple description of unicellular maps as pairs made by a plane tree and a permutation-like structure. All the previously known formulas follow as an immediate corollary or easy exercise, thus giving a bijective proof for each of them, in a unified way. For some of these formulas, this is the first bijective proof, e.g. the Harer-Zagier recurrence formula, the Lehman-Walsh formula and the Goupil-Schaeffer formula. We also discuss several applications of our construction: we obtain a new proof of an identity related to covered maps due to Bernardi and the first author, and thanks to previous work of the second author, we give a new expression for Stanley character polynomials, which evaluate irreducible characters of the symmetric group. Finally, we show that our techniques apply partially to unicellular 3-constellations and to related objects that we call quasi-constellations.

Character deflations and a generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given natural numbers m and n, we define a deflation map from the characters of the symmetric group S_{mn} to the characters of S_n. This map is obtained by first restricting a character of S_{mn} to the wreath product S_m \wr S_n, and then taking the sum of the irreducible constituents of the restricted character on which the base group S_m \times ... \times S_m acts trivially. We prove a combinatorial formula which gives the values of the images of the irreducible characters of S_{mn} under this map. We also prove an analogous result for more general deflation maps in which the base group is not required to act trivially. These results generalize the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule and special cases of the Littlewood--Richardson rule. As a corollary we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the character multiplicities that are the subject of the long-standing Foulkes' Conjecture. Using this formula we verify Foulkes' Conjecture in some new cases.

The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 230 (2012), 1738-1779 • View PublicationBIB
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

Direct bijective computation of the generating series for 2 and 3-connection coefficients of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate combinatorially certain connection coefficients of the symmetric group that count the number of factorizations of a long cycle as a product of three permutations. Such factorizations admit an important topological interpretation in terms of unicellular constellations on orientable surfaces. Algebraic computation of these coefficients was first done by Jackson using irreducible characters of the symmetric group. However, bijective computations of these coefficients are so far limited to very special cases. Thanks to a new bijection that refines the work of Schaeffer and Vassilieva, and Vassilieva, we give an explicit closed form evaluation of the generating series for these coefficients. The main ingredient in the bijection is a modified oriented tricolored tree tractable to enumerate. Finally, reducing this bijection to factorizations of a long cycle into two permutations, we get the analogue formula for the corresponding generating series.

Combinatorial methods of character enumeration for the unitriangular group
Published in J. Algebra 345 (2011), 295-323 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\UT_n(q)$ denote the group of unipotent $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over a field with $q$ elements. The degrees of the complex irreducible characters of $\UT_n(q)$ are precisely the integers $q^e$ with $0\leq e\leq \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor$, and it has been conjectured that the number of irreducible characters of $\UT_n(q)$ with degree $q^e$ is a polynomial in $q-1$ with nonnegative integer coefficients (depending on $n$ and $e$). We confirm this conjecture when $e\leq 8$ and $n$ is arbitrary by a computer calculation. In particular, we describe an algorithm which allows us to derive explicit bivariate polynomials in $n$ and $q$ giving the number of irreducible characters of $\UT_n(q)$ with degree $q^e$ when $n>2e$ and $e\leq 8$. When divided by $q^{n-e-2}$ and written in terms of the variables $n-2e-1$ and $q-1$, these functions are actually bivariate polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients, suggesting an even stronger conjecture concerning such character counts. As an application of these calculations, we are able to show that all irreducible characters of $\UT_n(q)$ with degree $\leq q^8$ are Kirillov functions. We also discuss some related results concerning the problem of counting the irreducible constituents of individual supercharacters of $\UT_n(q)$.

Set families and Foulkes modules
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 34 (2011) 525-544 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a new family of homomorphisms from Specht modules into Foulkes modules for the symmetric group. These homomorphisms are used to give a combinatorial description of the minimal partitions (in the dominance order) which label irreducible characters appearing as summands of the characters of Foulkes modules. The homomorphisms are defined using certain families of subsets of the natural numbers. These families are of independent interest; we prove a number of combinatorial results concerning them.

Self-adjoint symmetry operators connected with the magnetic Heisenberg ring
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider symmetry operators a from the group ring C[S_N] which act on the Hilbert space H of the 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnetic ring with N sites. We investigate such symmetry operators a which are self-adjoint (in a sence defined in the paper) and which yield consequently observables of the Heisenberg model. We prove the following results: (i) One can construct a self-adjoint idempotent symmetry operator from every irreducible character of every subgroup of S_N. This leads to a big manifold of observables. In particular every commutation symmetry yields such an idempotent. (ii) The set of all generating idempotents of a minimal right ideal R of C[S_N] contains one and only one idempotent which ist self-adjoint. (iii) Every self-adjoint idempotent e can be decomposed into primitive idempotents e = f_1 + ... + f_k which are also self-adjoint and pairwise orthogonal. We give a computer algorithm for the calculation of such decompositions. Furthermore we present 3 additional algorithms which are helpful for the calculation of self-adjoint operators by means of discrete Fourier transforms of S_N. In our investigations we use computer calculations by means of our Mathematica packages PERMS and HRing.

A Short Proof of Gamas's Theorem

If χ^λis the irreducible character of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to the partition λof n then we may symmetrize a tensor v_1 \otimes ... \otimes v_n by χ^λ. Gamas's theorem states that the result is not zero if and only if we can partition the set {v_i} into linearly independent sets whose sizes are the parts of the transpose of λ. We give a short and self-contained proof of this fact.

On the eigenvalues of Cayley graphs on the symmetric group generated by a complete multipartite set of transpositions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 32, no. 2, 155-185 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite simple graph $\cG$ with $n$ vertices, we can construct the Cayley graph on the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the edges of $\cG$, interpreted as transpositions. We show that, if $\cG$ is complete multipartite, the eigenvalues of the Laplacian of $\Cay(\cG)$ have a simple expression in terms of the irreducible characters of transpositions, and of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As a consequence we can prove that the Laplacians of $\cG$ and of $\Cay(\cG)$ have the same first nontrivial eigenvalue. This is equivalent to saying that Aldous's conjecture, asserting that the random walk and the interchange process have the same spectral gap, holds for complete multipartite graphs.

Burnside-Brauer Theorem and Character Products in Table Algebras

In this paper, we first show that the irreducible characters of a quotient table algebra modulo a normal closed subset can be viewed as the irreducible characters of the table algebra itself. Furthermore, we define the character products for table algebras and give a condition in which the products of two characters are characters. Thereafter, as a main result we state and prove the Burnside-Brauer Theorem on finite groups for table algebras.

Explicit combinatorial interpretation of Kerov character polynomials as numbers of permutation factorizations
Published in Adv. Math. 225 (2010), no. 1, 81-120 • View PublicationBIB
We find an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of Kerov character polynomials which express the value of normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric groups S(n) in terms of free cumulants R_2,R_3,... of the corresponding Young diagram. Our interpretation is based on counting certain factorizations of a given permutation.
