Pieri Integral Formula and Asymptotics of Jack Unitary Characters

We introduce Jack (unitary) characters and prove two kinds of formulas that are suitable for their asymptotics, as the lengths of the signatures that parametrize them go to infinity. The first kind includes several integral representations for Jack characters of one variable. The second identity we prove is the Pieri integral formula for Jack characters which, in a sense, is dual to the well known Pieri rule for Jack polynomials. The Pieri integral formula can also be seen as a functional equation for irreducible spherical functions of virtual Gelfand pairs.
As an application of our formulas, we study the asymptotics of Jack characters as the corresponding signatures grow to infinity in the sense of Vershik-Kerov. We prove the existence of a small $δ> 0$ such that the Jack characters of $m$ variables have a uniform limit on the $δ$-neighborhood of the $m$-dimensional torus. Our result specializes to a theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski.

We introduce a large class of random Young diagrams which can be regarded as a natural one-parameter deformation of some classical Young diagram ensembles; a deformation which is related to Jack polynomials and Jack characters. We show that each such a random Young diagram converges asymptotically to some limit shape and that the fluctuations around the limit are asymptotically Gaussian.

We express the integral form Macdonald polynomials as a weighted sum of Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic quasisymmetric functions of certain graphs. Then we use known expansions of these chromatic quasisymmetric functions into Schur and power sum symmetric functions to provide Schur and power sum formulas for the integral form Macdonald polynomials. Since the (integral form) Jack polynomials are a specialization of integral form Macdonald polynomials, we obtain analogous formulas for Jack polynomials as corollaries.

We consider bicolored maps, i.e. graphs which are drawn on surfaces, and construct a bijection between (i) oriented maps with arbitary face structure, and (ii) (weighted) non-oriented maps with exactly one face. Above, each non-oriented map is counted with a multiplicity which is based on the concept of the orientability generating series and the measure of orientability of a map. This bijection has the remarkable property of preserving the underlying bicolored graph. Our bijection shows equivalence between two explicit formulas for the top-degree of Jack characters, i.e. (suitably normalized) coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions.

In this paper, we study shifted Schur functions $S_μ^\star$, as well as a new family of shifted symmetric functions $\mathfrak{K}_μ$ linked to Kostka numbers. We prove that both are polynomials in multi-rectangular coordinates, with nonnegative coefficients when written in terms of falling factorials. We then propose a conjectural generalization to the Jack setting. This conjecture is a lifting of Knop and Sahi's positivity result for usual Jack polynomials and resembles recent conjectures of Lassalle. We prove our conjecture for one-part partitions.
Top degree part in $b$-conjecture for unicellular bipartite maps

Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; 1, 1+β)$ with an additional parameter $β$ that may be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the rooted bipartite maps generating series. Indeed, it has the property that for $β\in \{0,1\}$, it specializes to the rooted, orientable (general, i.e. orientable or not, respectively) bipartite maps generating series. They made the following conjecture: coefficients of $ψ$ are polynomials in $β$ with positive integer coefficients that can be written as a multivariate generating series of rooted, general bipartite maps, where the exponent of $β$ is an integer-valued statistic that in some sense "measures the non-orientability" of the corresponding bipartite map.
We show that except for two special values of $β= 0,1$ for which the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of $ψ$ is known, there exists a third special value $β= -1$ for which the coefficients of $ψ$ indexed by two partitions $μ,ν$, and one partition with only one part are given by rooted, orientable bipartite maps with arbitrary face degrees and black/white vertex degrees given by $μ$/$ν$, respectively. We show that this evaluation corresponds, up to a sign, to a top-degree part of the coefficients of $ψ$. As a consequence, we introduce a collection of integer-valued statistics of maps $(η)$ such that the top-degree of the multivariate generating series of rooted bipartite maps with only one face (called unicellular) with respect to $η$ gives the top-degree of the appropriate coefficients of $ψ$. Finally, we show that the $b$-conjecture holds true for all rooted, unicellular bipartite maps of genus at most $2$.
Structure coefficients for Jack characters: approximate factorization property
Jack characters are a generalization of the characters of the symmetric groups; a generalization that is related to Jack symmetric functions. We investigate the structure coefficients for Jack characters; they are a generalization of the connection coefficients for the symmetric groups. More specifically, we study the cumulants which measure the discrepancy between these structure coefficients and the simplistic structure coefficients related to the disjoint product. We show that Jack characters satisfy approximate factorization property: their cumulants are of very small degree and the character related to a given partition is approximately equal to the product of the characters related to its parts. This result will play a key role in the proof of Gaussianity of fluctuations for a class of random Young diagrams related to the Jack polynomials.

Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ that might be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the generating series of rooted hypermaps. They made the following conjecture: the coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ in the power-sum basis are polynomials in $β$ with nonnegative integer coefficients (by construction, these coefficients are rational functions in $β$).
We prove partially this conjecture, nowadays called $b$-conjecture, by showing that coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+ β)$ are polynomials in $β$ with rational coefficients. A key step of the proof is a strong factorization property of Jack polynomials when the Jack-deformation parameter $α$ tends to $0$, that may be of independent interest.
Random Partitions and the Quantum Benjamin-Ono Hierarchy
We derive exact and asymptotic results for random partitions from general results in the semi-classical analysis of coherent states applied to the classical periodic Benjamin-Ono equation at critical regularity $s= -1/2$. We find classical $dF_{\star |v} (c| \overline{\varepsilon})$ and quantum $d\hat{F}^{η_{NS}}( c | \hbar, \overline{\varepsilon})|_Ψ$ conserved densities for this system with dispersion coefficient $\overline{\varepsilon}$ extending Nazarov-Sklyanin (2013). For quantum stationary states, this conserved density is $dF_λ(c | \varepsilon_2, \varepsilon_1)$ the Rayleigh measure of the profile of a partition $λ$ of anisotropy $(\varepsilon_2, \varepsilon_1) \in \mathbb{C}^2$ for $\hbar = - \varepsilon_1 \varepsilon_2$, $\overline{\varepsilon}= \varepsilon_1 + \varepsilon_2$ invariant under $\varepsilon_2 \longleftrightarrow \varepsilon_1$. As Jack polynomials are the quantum stationary states and Stanley's Cauchy kernel (1989) is the reproducing kernel, the random values of the quantum periodic Benjamin-Ono hierarchy in a coherent state $Υ_v ( \cdot | \hbar)$ are a "Jack measure" on partitions, a dispersive generalization of Okounkov's Schur measures (1999). By our general results for coherent states, we have concentration on a limit shape as $\hbar \rightarrow 0$, the classical conserved density at $v$, and quantum fluctuations are an explicit Gaussian field. Our results follow from an enumerative asymptotic expansion in $\hbar$ and $\overline{\varepsilon}$ of joint cumulants over new combinatorial objects we call "ribbon paths". Our results reflect the fact that at fixed $\hbar>0$ the weight defining Fock space is already a fractional Brownian motion of variance $\hbar$ and Hurst index $(-s) - \tfrac{1}{2} \dim \mathbb{T} = + \tfrac{1}{2} - \tfrac{1}{2} = 0.$

Jack characters are a one-parameter deformation of the characters of the symmetric groups; a deformation given by the coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions. We study Jack characters from the viewpoint of the asymptotic representation theory. In particular, we give explicit formulas for their asymptotically top-degree part, in terms of bicolored oriented maps with an arbitrary face structure. We also study their multiplicative structure and their structure constants and we prove that they fulfill approximate factorization property, a convenient tool for proving Gaussianity of fluctuations of random Young diagrams.
A recurrence formula for Jack connection coefficients
This article is devoted to the study of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of the classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group closely related to the theory of Jack symmetric functions. First introduced by Goulden and Jackson (1996) these numbers indexed by three partitions of a given integer $n$ and the Jack parameter $α$ are defined as the coefficients in the power sum expansion of the Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions. While very little is known about them, examples of computations for small values of $n$ tend to show that the nice properties of the special cases $α=1$ (connection coefficients of the class algebra) and $α= 2$ (connection coefficients of the double coset algebra) extend to general $α$. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that Jack connection coefficients are polynomials in $β= α-1$ with non negative integer coefficients given by some statistics on matchings on a set of $2n$ elements, the so called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper we look at the case when two of the integer partitions are equal to the single part $(n)$ and use a framework by Lasalle (2008) for Jack symmetric functions to show that the coefficients satisfy a simple recurrence formula that makes their computation very effective and allow a better understanding of their properties. In particular we prove the Matchings-Jack conjecture in this case. Furthermore, we provide a bijective proof of the recurrence formula for $α\in \{1,2\}$ using the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients for these specific values of the Jack parameter. Finally we exhibit the polynomial properties of more general coefficients where the two single part partitions are replaced by an arbitrary number of integer partitions either equal to $(n)$ or $[1^{n-2}2]$.
Okounkov's BC-type interpolation Macdonald polynomials and their q=1 limit

This paper surveys eight classes of polynomials associated with $A$-type and $BC$-type root systems: Jack, Jacobi, Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials and interpolation (or shifted) Jack and Macdonald polynomials and their $BC$-type extensions. Among these the $BC$-type interpolation Jack polynomials were probably unobserved until now. Much emphasis is put on combinatorial formulas and binomial formulas for (most of) these polynomials. Possibly new results derived from these formulas are a limit from Koornwinder to Macdonald polynomials, an explicit formula for Koornwinder polynomials in two variables, and a combinatorial expression for the coefficients of the expansion of $BC$-type Jacobi polynomials in terms of Jack polynomials which is different from Macdonald's combinatorial expression. For these last coefficients in the two-variable case the explicit expression in Koornwinder & Sprinkhuizen (1978) is now obtained in a quite different way.
Some new applications of the Stanley-Macdonald Pieri Rules

In a seminal paper Richard Stanley derived Pieri rules for the Jack symmetric function basis. These rules were extended by Macdonald to his now famous symmetric function basis. The original form of these rules had a forbidding complexity that made them difficult to use in explicit calculations. In the early 90's it was discovered that, due to massive cancellations, the dual rule, which expresses skewing by $e_1$ the modified Macdonald polynomial ${\tilde H}_μ[X;q,t]$, can be given a very simple combinatorial form in terms of corner weights of the Ferrers' diagram of $μ$. A similar formula was later obtained by the last named author for the multiplication of ${\tilde H}_μ[X;q,t]$ by $e_1$, but never published. In the years that followed we have seen some truly remarkable uses of these two Pieri rules in establishing highly non trivial combinatorial results in the Theory of Macdonald polynomials. This theory has recently been spectacularly enriched by various Algebraic Geometrical results in the works of Hikita, Schiffmann, Schiffmann-Vasserot, A. Negut and Gorsky-Negut. This development opens up the challenging task of deriving their results by purely Algebraic Combinatorial methods. In this paper we present the progress obtained by means of Pieri rules.

Jack polynomials generalize several classical families of symmetric polynomials, including Schur polynomials, and are further generalized by Macdonald polynomials. In 1989, Richard Stanley conjectured that if the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient for a triple of Schur polynomials is 1, then the corresponding coefficient for Jack polynomials can be expressed as a product of weighted hooks of the Young diagrams associated to the partitions indexing the coefficient. We prove a special case of this conjecture in which the partitions indexing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient have at most 3 parts. We also show that this result extends to Macdonald polynomials.

In this paper, we consider a deformation of Plancherel measure linked to Jack polynomials. Our main result is the description of the first and second-order asymptotics of the bulk of a random Young diagram under this distribution, which extends celebrated results of Vershik-Kerov and Logan-Shepp (for the first order asymptotics) and Kerov (for the second order asymptotics). This gives more evidence of the connection with Gaussian $β$-ensemble, already suggested by some work of Matsumoto.
Our main tool is a polynomiality result for the structure constant of some quantities that we call Jack characters, recently introduced by Lassalle. We believe that this result is also interested in itself and we give several other applications of it.

We introduce multilevel versions of Dyson Brownian motions of arbitrary parameter $β>0$, generalizing the interlacing reflected Brownian motions of Warren for $β=2$. Such processes unify $β$ corners processes and Dyson Brownian motions in a single object. Our approach is based on the approximation by certain multilevel discrete Markov chains of independent interest, which are defined by means of Jack symmetric polynomials. In particular, this approach allows to show that the levels in a multilevel Dyson Brownian motion are intertwined (at least for $β\ge 1$) and to give the corresponding link explicitly.
Polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients and generalization of a result by Dénes

This article is devoted to the computation of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of two classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group: the class algebra and the double coset algebra. The connection coefficients of these two algebraic structures are of significant interest in the study of Schur and zonal polynomials as well as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Furthermore they play an important role in combinatorics as they give the number of factorizations of a permutation into a product of permutations with given cyclic properties. Usually studied separately, these two families of coefficients share strong similar properties. First (partially) introduced by Goulden and Jackson in 1996, Jack connection coefficients provide a natural unified approach closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials, a family of bases in the ring of symmetric functions indexed by a parameter αthat generalizes both Schur (case α= 1) and zonal polynomials (case α= 2). Jack connection coefficients are also directly linked to Jack characters, a general view of the characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that these coefficients are polynomials in αwith nice combinatorial properties, the so-called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper, we use the theory of Jack symmetric functions and the Laplace Beltrami operator to show the polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients in some important cases. We also provide explicit formulations including notably a generalization of a classical formula of Dénes for the number of minimal factorizations of a permutation into transpositions.

A hierarchy of pairwise commuting Hamiltonians for the quantum periodic Benjamin-Ono equation is constructed by using the Lax matrix. The eigenvectors of these Hamiltonians are Jack symmetric functions of infinitely many variables $x_1,x_2,\ldots$. This construction provides explicit expressions for the Hamiltonians in terms of the power sum symmetric functions $p_n=x_1^n+x_2^n+\cdots$ and is based on our recent results from [Comm. Math. Phys. 324 (2013), 831-849, arXiv:1212.2781].
Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry and some of their clustering properties

We study Jack polynomials in $N$ variables, with parameter $α$, and having a prescribed symmetry with respect to two disjoint subsets of variables. For instance, these polynomials can exhibit a symmetry of type AS, which means that they are anti-symmetric in the first $m$ variables and symmetric in the remaining $N-m$ variables. One of our main goals is to extend recent works on symmetric Jack polynomials [arXiv:0711.3062, arXiv:1007.2692, arXiv:1303.4126] and prove that the Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry also admit clusters of size $k$ and order $r$, that is, the polynomials vanish to order $r$ when $k+1$ variables coincide.
We first prove some general properties for generic $α$, such as their uniqueness as triangular eigenfunctions of operators of Sutherland type, and the existence of their analogues in infinity many variables. We then turn our attention to the case with $α=-(k+1)/(r-1)$. We show that for each triplet $(k,r,N)$, there exist admissibility conditions on the indexing sets, called superpartitions, that guaranty both the regularity and the uniqueness of the polynomials. These conditions are also used to establish similar properties for non-symmetric Jack polynomials. As a result, we prove that the Jack polynomials with arbitrary prescribed symmetry, indexed by $(k,r,N)$-admissible superpartitions, admit clusters of size $k=1$ and order $r\geq 2$. In the last part of the article, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the invariance under translation of the Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry AS. This allows to find special families of superpartitions that imply the existence of clusters of size $k>1$ and order $r\geq 2$.
