Hankel hyperdeterminants, rectangular Jack polynomials and even powers of the Vandermonde
Published in Journal of Algebra 320, 11 (2008) 3911-3925 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the link between rectangular Jack polynomials and Hankel hyperdeterminants. As an application we give an expression of the even power of the Vandermonde in term of Jack polynomials.

On the generalised Selberg integral of Richards and Zheng
Published in Adv. Applied Math. 40 (2008), 212-218. • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper Richards and Zheng compute the determinant of a matrix whose entries are given by beta-type integrals, thereby generalising an earlier result by Dixon and Varchenko. They then use their result to obtain a generalisation of the famous Selberg integral. In this note we point out that the Selberg-generalisation of Richards and Zheng is a special case of an integral over Jack polynomials due to Kadell. We then show how an integral formula for Jack polynomials of Okounkov and Olshanski may be applied to prove Kadell's integral along the lines of Richards and Zheng.

Orthogonal functions generalizing Jack polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rational Cherednik algebra $\HH$ is a certain algebra of differential-reflection operators attached to a complex reflection group $W$. Each irreducible representation $S^λ$ of $W$ corresponds to a standard module $M(λ)$ for $\HH$. This paper deals with the infinite family $G(r,1,n)$ of complex reflection groups; our goal is to study the standard modules using a commutative subalgebra $\ttt$ of $\HH$ discovered by Dunkl and Opdam. In this case, the irreducible $W$-modules are indexed by certain sequences $λ$ of partitions. We first show that $\ttt$ acts in an upper triangular fashion on each standard module $M(λ)$, with eigenvalues determined by the combinatorics of the set of standard tableaux on $λ$. As a consequence, we construct a basis for $M(λ)$ consisting of orthogonal functions on $\CC^n$ with values in the representation $S^λ$. For $G(1,1,n)$ with $λ=(n)$ these functions are the non-symmetric Jack polynomials. We use intertwining operators to deduce a norm formula for our orthogonal functions and give an explicit combinatorial description of the lattice of submodules of $M(λ)$ in the case in which the orthogonal functions are all well-defined.

A positivity conjecture for Jack polynomials
Published in Mathematical Research Letters 15 (2008), 661-681. • View PublicationBIB
We present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the development of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. This extends Stanley's ex-conjecture about normalized characters of the symmetric group. We prove this conjecture for partitions having a rectangular shape.

Moments of characteristic polynomials for compact symmetric spaces and Jack polynomials
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 40 (2007) 13567-13586 • View PublicationBIB
We express the averages of products of characteristic polynomials for random matrix ensembles associated with compact symmetric spaces in terms of Jack polynomials or Heckman and Opdam's Jacobi polynomials depending on the root system of the space. We also give explicit expressions for the asymptotic behavior of these averages in the limit as the matrix size goes to infinity.

Multiplication of polynomials on Hermitian symmetric spaces and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let K be a complex reductive algebraic group and V a representation of K. Let S denote the ring of polynomials on V. Assume that the action of K on S is multiplicity free. If V_λ is an irreducible representation of K, let S_λ denote the corresponding isotypic component of S. Write S_λ S_μ for the subspace of S spanned by products of S_λ and S_μ. If V_ν occurs as an irreducible constituent of the tensor product of V_λ and V_μ, is it true that S_ν is contained in S_λ S_μ? We investigate this question for representations arising in the context of Hermitian symmetric pairs. We show that the answer is yes in some cases and, using an earlier result of Ruitenburg, that in the remaining classical cases, the answer is yes provided that a conjecture of Stanley on the multiplication of Jack polynomials is true. We also show how the conjecture connects multiplication in the ring S to the usual Littlewood-Richardson rule.

Bisymmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials and sl_3 basic hypergeometric series
Published in Compositio Math. 144 (2008), 271-303 • Search Publication
A new type of sl_3 basic hypergeometric series based on Macdonald polynomials is introduced. Besides a pair of Macdonald polynomials attached to two different sets of variables, a key-ingredient in the sl_3 basic hypergeometric series is a bisymmetric function related to Macdonald's commuting family of q-difference operators, to the sl_3 Selberg integrals of Tarasov and Varchenko, and to alternating sign matrices. Our main result for sl_3 series is a multivariable generalization of the celebrated q-binomial theorem. In the limit this q-binomial sum yields a new sl_3 Selberg integral for Jack polynomials.

Orthogonality of Jack polynomials in superspace
Published in Advances in Mathematics 212 (2007) 361-388 • View PublicationBIB
Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to a ``combinatorial'' scalar product, are constructed. They are shown to coincide with the Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to an ``analytical'' scalar product, introduced in hep-th/0209074 as eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The results of this article rely on generalizing (to include an extra parameter) the theory of classical symmetric functions in superspace developed recently in math.CO/0509408

Symmetric functions in superspace
We construct a generalization of the theory of symmetric functions involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group acting on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. We first obtain superspace analogues of a number of standard objects and concepts in the theory of symmetric functions: partitions, monomials, elementary symmetric functions, completely symmetric functions, power sums, involutions, generating functions, Cauchy formulas, and scalar products. We then consider a one-parameter extension of the combinatorial scalar product. It provides the natural setting for the definition of a family of ``combinatorial'' orthogonal Jack polynomials in superspace. We show that this family coincides with that of ``physical'' Jack polynomials in superspace that were previously introduced by the authors as orthogonal eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The equivalence of the two families is established by showing that the ``physical'' Jack polynomials are also orthogonal with respect to the combinatorial scalar product. This equivalence is also directly demonstrated for particular values of the free parameter.

Hook-lengths and Pairs of Compositions
Published in J. Comp. Appl. Math. 199 (2007), 39-47 • View PublicationBIB
The monomial basis for polynomials in N variables is labeled by compositions. To each composition there is associated a hook-length product, which is a product of linear functions of a parameter. The zeroes of this product are related to "critical pairs" of compositions; a concept defined in this paper. This property can be described in an elementary geometric way; for example: consider the two compositions (2,7,8,2,0,0) and (5,1,2,5,3,3), then the respective ranks, permutations of the index set {1,2,...,6} sorting the compositions, are (3,2,1,4,5,6) and (1,6,5,2,3,4), and the two vectors of differences (between the compositions and the ranks, respectively) are (-3,6,6,-3,-3,-3) and (2,-4,-4,2,2,2), which are parallel, with ratio -3/2. For a given composition and zero of its hook-length product there is an algorithm for constructing another composition with the parallelism property and which is comparable to it in a certain partial order on compositions, derived from the dominance order. This paper presents the motivation from the theory of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials and the description of the algorithm, as well as the proof of its validity.

A Combinatorial Formula for Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for the Macdonald polynomial H_mu(x;q,t) which had been conjectured by the first author. Corollaries to our main theorem include the expansion of H_mu(x;q,t) in terms of LLT polynomials, a new proof of the charge formula of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for Hall-Littlewood polynomials, a new proof of Knop and Sahi's combinatorial formula for Jack polynomials as well as a lifting of their formula to integral form Macdonald polynomials, and a new combinatorial rule for the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) in the case that mu is a partition with parts less than or equal to 2.

Coincident root loci and Jack and Macdonald polynomials for special values of the parameters
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the coincident root loci consisting of the polynomials with at least two double roots andpresent a linear basis of the corresponding ideal in the algebra of symmetric polynomials in terms of the Jack polynomials with special value of parameter $α= -2.$ As a corollary we present an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Poincarè series of this ideal and the generator of the minimal degree as a special Jack polynomial. A generalization to the case of the symmetric polynomials vanishing on the double shifted diagonals and the Macdonald polynomials specialized at $t^2 q = 1$ is also presented. We also give similar results for the interpolation Jack polynomials.

Stein's Method, Jack Measure, and the Metropolis Algorithm
Published • View PublicationBIB
The one parameter family of Jack(alpha) measures on partitions is an important discrete analog of Dyson's beta ensembles of random matrix theory. Except for special values of alpha=1/2,1,2 which have group theoretic interpretations, the Jack(alpha) measure has been difficult if not intractable to analyze. This paper proves a central limit theorem (with an error term) for Jack(alpha) measure which works for arbitrary values of alpha. For alpha=1 we recover a known central limit theorem on the distribution of character ratios of random representations of the symmetric group on transpositions. The case alpha=2 gives a new central limit theorem for random spherical functions of a Gelfand pair. The proof uses Stein's method and has interesting ingredients: an intruiging construction of an exchangeable pair, properties of Jack polynomials, and work of Hanlon relating Jack polynomials to the Metropolis algorithm.

Jack polynomials and some identities for partitions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 356 (2004), 3455-3476 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an identity about partitions involving new combinatorial coefficients. The proof given is using a generating function. As an application we obtain the explicit expression of two shifted symmetric functions, related with Jack polynomials. These quantities are the moments of the "alpha-content" random variable with respect to some transition probability distributions.

Jack polynomials in superspace
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 242 (2003) 331-360 • View PublicationBIB
This work initiates the study of {\it orthogonal} symmetric polynomials in superspace. Here we present two approaches leading to a family of orthogonal polynomials in superspace that generalize the Jack polynomials. The first approach relies on previous work by the authors in which eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland Hamiltonian were constructed. Orthogonal eigenfunctions are now obtained by diagonalizing the first nontrivial element of a bosonic tower of commuting conserved charges not containing this Hamiltonian. Quite remarkably, the expansion coefficients of these orthogonal eigenfunctions in the supermonomial basis are stable with respect to the number of variables. The second and more direct approach amounts to symmetrize products of non-symmetric Jack polynomials with monomials in the fermionic variables. This time, the orthogonality is inherited from the orthogonality of the non-symmetric Jack polynomials, and the value of the norm is given explicitly.

Symmetric polynomials vanishing on the shifted diagonals and Macdonald polynomials
For each pair (k,r) of positive integers with r>1, we consider an ideal I^(k,r)_n of the ring of symmetric polynomials in n variables. The ideal I_n^(k,r) has a basis consisting of Macdonald polynomials P(x_1,...,x_n;q,t) at t^{k+1}q^{r-1}=1, and is a deformed version of the one studied earlier in the context of Jack polynomials. In this paper we give a characterization of I^(k,r)_n in terms of explicit zero conditions on the k-codimensional shifted diagonals of the form x_{2}=tq^{s_1}x_1,...,x_{k+1}=tq^{s_k}x_k. The ideal I^(k,r)_n may be viewed as a deformation of the space of correlation functions of an abelian current of the affine Lie algebra \hat{sl_r}. We give a brief discussion about this connection.
Rational solutions to the Pfaff lattice and Jack polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The finite Pfaff lattice is given by commuting Lax pairs involving a finite matrix L (zero above the first subdiagonal) and a projection onto Sp(N). The lattice admits solutions such that the entries of the matrix L are rational in the time parameters t_1,t_2,..., after conjugation by a diagonal matrix. The sequence of polynomial tau-functions, solving the problem, belongs to an intriguing chain of subspaces of Schur polynomials, associated to Young diagrams, dual with respect to a finite chain of rectangles. Also, this sequence of tau-functions is given inductively by the action of a fixed vertex operator. As examples, one such sequence is given by Jack polynomials for rectangular Young diagrams, while another chain starts with any two-column Jack polynomial.

A differential ideal of symmetric polynomials spanned by Jack polynomials at $β=-(r-1)/(k+1)$
For each pair of positive integers (k,r) such that k+1,r-1 are coprime, we introduce an ideal $I^{(k,r)}_n$ of the ring of symmetric polynomials. The ideal $I^{(k,r)}_n$ has a basis consisting of Jack polynomials with parameter $β=-(r-1)/(k+1)$, and admits an action of a family of differential operators of Dunkl type including the positive half of the Virasoro algebra. The space $I^{(k,2)}_n$ coincides with the space of all symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables which vanish when $k+1$ variables are set equal. The space $I_n^{(2,r)}$ coincides with the space of correlation functions of an abelian current of a vertex operator algebra related to Virasoro minimal series (3,r+2).

Combinatorics and invariant differential operators on multiplicity free spaces
Published in J. Algebra 260 (2003), 194-229 • View PublicationBIB
We study the generalization of shifted Jack polynomials to arbitrary multiplicity free spaces. In a previous paper (math.RT/0006004) we showed that these polynomials are eigenfunctions for commuting difference operators. Our central result now is the "transposition formula", a generalization of Okounkov's binomial theorem (q-alg/9608021) for shifted Jack polynomials. From this formula, we derive an interpolation formula, an evaluation formula, a scalar product, a binomial theorem, and properties of the algebra generated by the multiplication and difference operators.

Construction of commuting difference operators for multiplicity free spaces
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 6 (2000), 443-470 • View PublicationBIB
We study root systems equipped with a basis of dominant weights such that certain axioms hold. This formalism allows to define a linear basis P of the space of Weyl group invariant polynomials. This basis is actually a family depending on at least one parameter. Our main result is the construction of difference operators which are simultaneously diagonalized by P. From this, Pieri type rules are derived. This generalizes results for shifted Jack polynomials. Even though the approach is purely combinatorial, the main motivation comes from multiplicity free actions of reductive groups on vector spaces. Then the algebra of invariant differential operators has a distinguished basis, the Capelli operators, which gives rise to a basis P as above. The paper ends with a comprehensive table detailing the combinatorial structure of multiplicity free actions.
