Linear spaces with significant characteristic prime
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group with socle a simple group of Lie type defined over the finite field with $q$ elements where $q$ is a power of the prime $p$. Suppose that $G$ acts transitively upon the lines of a linear space $\mathcal{S}$. We show that if $p$ is {\it significant} then $G$ acts flag-transitively on $\mathcal{S}$ and all examples are known.

A sharp diameter bound for unipotent groups of classical type over Z/pZ
Published • View PublicationBIB
The unipotent subgroup of a finite group of Lie type over a prime field Z/pZ comes equipped with a natural set of generators; the properties of the Cayley graph associated to this set of generators have been much studied. In the present paper, we show that the diameter of this Cayley graph is bounded above and below by constant multiples of np + n^2 log p, where n is the rank of the associated Lie group. This generalizes a result of the first author, which treated the case of SL_n(Z/pZ). (Keywords: diameter, Cayley graph, finite groups of Lie type. AMS classification: 20G40, 05C25)

On the Combinatorics of Crystal Graphs, I. Lusztig's Involution
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

Sign balance for finite groups of Lie type
Published • View PublicationBIB
A product formula for the parity generating function of the number of 1's in invertible matrices over Z_2 is given. The computation is based on algebraic tools such as the Bruhat decomposition. The same technique is used to obtain a parity generating function also for symplectic matrices over Z_2. We present also a generating function for the sum of entries of matrices over an arbitrary finite field F_q calculated in F_q. These formulas are new appearances of the Mahonian distribution.

Chains in the Bruhat order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

Universal lattices and unbounded rank expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the representations of non-commutative universal lattices and use them to compute lower bounds for the \TauC for the commutative universal lattices $G_{d,k}= \SL_d(\Z[x_1,...,x_k])$ with respect to several generating sets. As an application of the above result we show that the Cayley graphs of the finite groups $\SL_{3k}(\F_p)$ can be made expanders using suitable choice of the generators. This provides the first examples of expander families of groups of Lie type where the rank is not bounded and gives a natural (and explicit) counter examples to two conjectures of Alex Lubotzky and Benjamin Weiss.

A note on tensor categories of Lie type $E_9$
Published in J. of Algebra, 284 (2005) no. 1, 296-309 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of decomposing tensor powers of the fundamental level 1 highest weight representation $V$ of the affine Kac-Moody algebra $\g(E_9)$. We describe an elementary algorithm for determining the decomposition of the submodule of $\Vn$ whose irreducible direct summands have highest weights which are maximal with respect to the null-root. This decomposition is based on Littelmann's path algorithm and conforms with the uniform combinatorial behavior recently discovered by H. Wenzl for the series $E_N$, $N\not=9$.

Local Characterizations of Geometries
Geometric approach to classical and exceptional groups of Lie type has been quite successful and has led to the deveopment of the concept of buildings and polar spaces. The latter have been characterized by simple systems of axioms with a combinatorial-geometric flavour. Similar to buildings geometries can be associated with finite sporadic simple groups (FSSGs). However, most of the known characterizations of such geometries for FSSGs require additional assumptions of a group-theoretic nature. One aim of this thesis is to present characterizations of geometries for FSSGs J_2, Suz, McL, Co_3, Fi(22), Fi(23), Fi(24) and He, which are in the same spirit as the characterizations of buildings and polar spaces mentioned above, in particular without any assumption on the automorphism groups of the geometries. A by-product of these results for J_2, Suz and He is a proof that certain presentations for those groups are faithful. Most of this work may be viewed as a contribution to the theory of graphs with prescribed neighbourhood. The result on graphs of (+)-points of GF(3)-orthogonal spaces, which is also used for characterization of geometries for Fi(22), Fi(23) and Fi(24), may be considered as a generalization of a well-known theorem on locally co-triangular graphs. Hyperovals of polar spaces are natural generalizations of hyperovals of projective planes of even order and play an important role in investigations of extensions of polar spaces. As a by-product new extended generalized quadrangles were found as hyperovals of the polar spaces Q_5^+(4) and H_5(4).

Applications of the Brauer complex: card shuffling, permutation statistics, and dynamical systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple conjugacy classes of a finite group of Lie type to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Picking a semisimple class uniformly at random yields a probability measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Using the Brauer complex, it is proved that this measure agrees with a second measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group induced by a construction of Cellini using the affine Weyl group. Formulas for Cellini's measure in type $A$ are found. This leads to new models of card shuffling and has interesting combinatorial and number theoretic consequences. An analysis of type C gives another solution to a problem of Rogers in dynamical systems: the enumeration of unimodal permutations by cycle structure. The proof uses the factorization theory of palindromic polynomials over finite fields. Contact is made with symmetric function theory.

A Path Algorithm for Affine Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop an algorithm for computing affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, for all Lie types. This generalizes our previously published algorithm for type A, which in turn is a faster version of an algorithm due to Lascouz, Leclerc and Thibon (proposed in the setting of Hecke algebras of type A, at roots of unity.)

Double Schubert polynomials and degeneracy loci for the classical groups
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier 52 (2002), 1681-1727 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a theory of double Schubert polynomials P_w(X,Y) for the Lie types B, C, D which naturally extends the family of Lascoux of Schutzenberger in type A. These polynomials satisfy positivity, orthogonality, and stability properties, and represent the classes of Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci of vector bundles. When w is a maximal Grassmannian element of the Weyl group, P_w(X,Y) can be expressed in terms of Schur-type determinants and Pfaffians, in analogy with the type A formula of Kempf and Laksov. An example, motivated by quantum cohomology, shows that there are no Chern class formulas for degeneracy loci of ``isotropic morphisms'' of bundles.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

Counting semisimple orbits of finite Lie algebras by genus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra is studied. A simple formula is conjectured for the number of split semisimple orbits of a given genus. This conjecture is proved for type A, and partial results are obtained for other types. For type A a probabilistic interpretation is given in terms of card shuffling.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling measures on Coxeter groups
Published in Latest version is math.GR/9903012 • View PublicationBIB
Solomon's descent algebra is used to define a family of signed measures M(W,x) for a finite Coxeter group W and non-zero x. The measures corresponding to W of types A and B are known to arise from the theory of card shuffling and to be related to the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem and splittings of Hochschild homology. Formulas for these measures are obtained in special cases. The eigenvalues of the associated Markov chains are computed. By elementary algebraic group theory, choosing a random semisimple orbit on a Lie algebra corresponding to a finite group of Lie type G^F induces a measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group W of G^F. It is conjectured that this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from M(W,q) (and further that M(W,q) is non-negative on all elements of W). This conjecture is proved for all types for the identity conjugacy class of W, and is confirmed for all conjugacy classes for W of types A, B, and C.
