Flexibility of Planar Graphs -- Sharpening the Tools to Get Lists of Size Four
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 306 (2022) 120-132 • View PublicationBIB
A graph where each vertex $v$ has a list $L(v)$ of available colors is $L$-colorable if there is a proper coloring such that the color of $v$ is in $L(v)$ for each $v$. A graph is $k$-choosable if every assignment $L$ of at least $k$ colors to each vertex guarantees an $L$-coloring. Given a list assignment $L$, an $L$-request for a vertex $v$ is a color $c\in L(v)$. In this paper, we look at a variant of the widely studied class of precoloring extension problems from [Z. Dvořák, S. Norin, and L. Postle: List coloring with requests. J. Graph Theory 2019], wherein one must satisfy "enough", as opposed to all, of the requested set of precolors. A graph $G$ is $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $k$ if for any $k$-list assignment $L$, and any set $S$ of $L$-requests, there is an $L$-coloring of $G$ satisfying an $\varepsilon$-fraction of the requests in $S$. It is conjectured that planar graphs are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$, yet it is proved only for list size $6$ and for certain subclasses of planar graphs. We give a stronger version of the main tool used in the proofs of the aforementioned results. By doing so, we improve upon a result by Masařík and show that planar graphs without $K_4^-$ are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$. We also prove that planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $3$-cycle distance at least 2 are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $4$. Finally, we introduce a new (slightly weaker) form of $\varepsilon$-flexibility where each vertex has exactly one request. In that setting, we provide a stronger tool and we demonstrate its usefulness to further extend the class of graphs that are $\varepsilon$-flexible for list size $5$.
Coloring Problems on Bipartite Graphs of Small Diameter

We investigate a number of coloring problems restricted to bipartite graphs with bounded diameter. First, we investigate the $k$-List Coloring, List $k$-Coloring, and $k$-Precoloring Extension problems on bipartite graphs with diameter at most $d$, proving NP-completeness in most cases, and leaving open only the List $3$-Coloring and $3$-Precoloring Extension problems when $d=3$. Some of these results are obtained through a proof that the Surjective $C_6$-Homomorphism problem is NP-complete on bipartite graphs with diameter at most four. Although the latter result has been already proved [Vikas, 2017], we present ours as an alternative simpler one. As a byproduct, we also get that $3$-Biclique Partition is NP-complete. An attempt to prove this result was presented in [Fleischner, Mujuni, Paulusma, and Szeider, 2009], but there was a flaw in their proof, which we identify and discuss here. Finally, we prove that the $3$-Fall Coloring problem is NP-complete on bipartite graphs with diameter at most four, and prove that NP-completeness for diameter three would also imply NP-completeness of $3$-Precoloring Extension on diameter three, thus closing the previously mentioned open cases. This would also answer a question posed in [Kratochvíl, Tuza, and Voigt, 2002].
Equitable $d$-degenerate choosability of graphs

Let ${\mathcal D}_d$ be the class of $d$-degenerate graphs and let $L$ be a list assignment for a graph $G$. A colouring of $G$ such that every vertex receives a colour from its list and the subgraph induced by vertices coloured with one color is a $d$-degenerate graph is called the $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring of $G$. For a $k$-uniform list assignment $L$ and $d\in\mathbb{N}_0$, a graph $G$ is equitably $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colorable if there is an $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring of $G$ such that the size of any colour class does not exceed $\left\lceil|V(G)|/k\right\rceil$. An equitable $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring is a generalization of an equitable list coloring, introduced by Kostochka at al., and an equitable list arboricity presented by Zhang. Such a model can be useful in the network decomposition where some structural properties on subnets are imposed. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that for a given $(k,d)$-partition of $G$ with a $t$-uniform list assignment $L$ and $t\geq k$, returns its equitable $(L,\mathcal{D}_{d-1})$-colouring. In addition, we show that 3-dimensional grids are equitably $(L,\mathcal{D}_1)$-colorable for any $t$-uniform list assignment $L$ where $t\geq 3$.
Partial DP-Coloring

In 1980, Albertson and Berman introduced partial coloring. In 2000, Albertson, Grossman, and Haas introduced partial list coloring. Here, we initiate the study of partial coloring for an insightful generalization of list coloring introduced in 2015 by Dvořák and Postle, DP-coloring (or correspondence coloring). We consider the DP-coloring analogue of the Partial List Coloring Conjecture, which generalizes a natural bound for partial coloring. We show that while this partial DP-coloring conjecture does not hold, several results on partial list coloring can be extended to partial DP-coloring. We also study partial DP-coloring of the join of a graph with a complete graph, and we present several interesting open questions.

DP-3-coloring of planar graphs without certain cycles
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 297 (2021) 35--45 • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring, which was introduced by Dvořák and Postle [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 (2018) 38--54]. Zhang [Inform. Process. Lett. 113 (9) (2013) 354--356] showed that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is 3-choosable. Liu et al. [Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 178--189] showed that every planar graph without 4-, 5-, 6- and 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable. In this paper, we show that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable, which generalizes these results. Yu et al. gave three Bordeaux-type results by showing that (i) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least three and no 4-, 5-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 4-, 5-, 6-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (iii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 5-, 6-, 7-cycles is DP-3-colorable. We also give two Bordeaux-type results in the last section: (i) every plane graph with neither 5-, 6-, 8-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every plane graph with neither 4-, 5-, 7-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable.
Defective DP-colorings of sparse multigraphs

DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring developed recently by Dvorak and Postle. We introduce and study $(i,j)$-defective DP-colorings of multigraphs. We concentrate on sparse multigraphs and consider $f_{DP}(i,j,n)$ --- the minimum number of edges that may have an $n$-vertex $(i,j)$-critical multigraph, that is, a multigraph $G$ that has no $(i,j)$-defective DP-coloring but whose every proper subgraph has such a coloring. For every $i$ and $j$, we find linear lower bounds on $f_{DP}(i,j,n)$ that are exact for infinitely many $n$.

Dynamic list coloring of 1-planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. Typically, the class of 1-planar graphs is among the most investigated graph families within the so-called "beyond planar graphs". A dynamic $\ell$-list coloring of a graph is a proper coloring so that each vertex receives a color from a list of $\ell$ distinct candidate colors assigned to it, and meanwhile, there are at least two colors appearing in the neighborhood of every vertex of degree at least two. In this paper, we prove that each 1-planar graph has a dynamic $11$-list coloring. Moreover, we show a relationship between the dynamic coloring of 1-planar graphs and the proper coloring of 2-planar graphs, which states that the dynamic (list) chromatic number of the class of 1-planar graphs is at least the (list) chromatic number of the class of 2-planar graphs.
List colouring of two matroids through reduction to partition matroids
In the list coloring problem for two matroids, we are given matroids $M_1=(S,{\cal I}_1)$ and $M_2=(S,{\cal I}_2)$ on the same ground set $S$, and the goal is to determine the smallest number $k$ such that given arbitrary lists $L_s$ of $k$ colors for $s\in S$, it is possible to choose a color from each list so that every monochromatic set is independent in both $M_1$ and $M_2$. When both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are partition matroids, Galvin's list coloring theorem for bipartite graphs gives the answer. One of the main open questions is to decide if there exists a constant $c$ such that if the coloring number is $k$ (i.e., the ground set can be partitioned into $k$ common independent sets), then the list coloring number is at most $c\cdot k$. We consider matroid classes that appear naturally in combinatorial optimization problems, namely graphic matroids, paving matroids and gammoids. We show that if both matroids are from these fundamental classes, then the list coloring number is at most twice the coloring number. The proof is based on a new approach that reduces a matroid to a partition matroid without increasing its coloring number too much, and might be of independent combinatorial interest. In particular, we show that if $M=(S,{\cal I})$ is a matroid in which $S$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, then there exists a partition matroid $N=(S,{\cal J})$ with ${\cal J}\subseteq{\cal I}$ in which $S$ can be partitioned into (A) $k$ independent sets if $M$ is a transversal matroid, (B) $2k-1$ independent sets if $M$ is a graphic matroid, (C) $\lceil kr/(r-1)\rceil$ independent sets if $M$ is a paving matroid of rank $r$, and (D) $2k-2$ independent sets if $M$ is a gammoid. We extend our results by showing that the existence of a matroid $N$ with $χ(N)\leq 2χ(M)$ implies the existence of a matroid $N'$ with $χ(N')\leq 2χ(M')$ for every truncation $M'$ of $M$.
Majority Colorings of Sparse Digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex-coloring in which every vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood proved that every digraph has a majority 4-coloring and conjectured that every digraph admits a majority 3-coloring. We verify this conjecture for digraphs with chromatic number at most 6 or dichromatic number at most 3. We obtain analogous results for list coloring: We show that every digraph with list chromatic number at most 6 or list dichromatic number at most 3 is majority 3-choosable. We deduce that digraphs with maximum out-degree at most 4 or maximum degree at most 7 are majority 3-choosable. On the way to these results we investigate digraphs admitting a majority 2-coloring. We show that every digraph without odd directed cycles is majority 2-choosable. We answer an open question posed by Kreutzer et al. negatively, by showing that deciding whether a given digraph is majority 2-colorable is NP-complete. Finally we deal with a fractional relaxation of majority coloring proposed by Kreutzer et al. and show that every digraph has a fractional majority 3.9602-coloring. We show that every digraph with minimum out-degree $Ω\left((1/\varepsilon)^2\ln(1/\varepsilon)\right)$ has a fractional majority $(2+\varepsilon)$-coloring.
DP-coloring for planar graphs of diameter two
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvourák and Postle (2017). Recently, Huang et al. [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amc.2019.124562] showed that planar graphs with diameter at most two are $4$-choosable. In this paper, we will prove that planar graphs with diameter at most two are DP-$4$-colorable, which is an extension of the above result.
Proportional 2-Choosability with a Bounded Palette
Published • View PublicationBIB
Proportional choosability is a list coloring analogue of equitable coloring. Specifically, a $k$-assignment $L$ for a graph $G$ specifies a list $L(v)$ of $k$ available colors to each $v \in V(G)$. An $L$-coloring assigns a color to each vertex $v$ from its list $L(v)$. A proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper $L$-coloring in which each color $c \in \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L(v)$ is used $\lfloor η(c)/k \rfloor$ or $\lceil η(c)/k \rceil$ times where $η(c)=\left\lvert{\{v \in V(G) : c \in L(v) \}}\right\rvert$. A graph $G$ is proportionally $k$-choosable if a proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ exists whenever $L$ is a $k$-assignment for $G$. Motivated by earlier work, we initiate the study of proportional choosability with a bounded palette by studying proportional 2-choosability with a bounded palette. In particular, when $\ell \geq 2$, a graph $G$ is said to be proportionally $(2, \ell)$-choosable if a proportional $L$-coloring of $G$ exists whenever $L$ is a $2$-assignment for $G$ satisfying $|\bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L(v)| \leq \ell$. We observe that a graph is proportionally $(2,2)$-choosable if and only if it is equitably 2-colorable. As $\ell$ gets larger, the set of proportionally $(2, \ell)$-choosable graphs gets smaller. We show that whenever $\ell \geq 5$ a graph is proportionally $(2, \ell)$-choosable if and only if it is proportionally 2-choosable. We also completely characterize the connected proportionally $(2, \ell)$-choosable graphs when $\ell = 3,4$.

A Note on Fractional DP-Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. In 2019, Bernshteyn, Kostochka, and Zhu introduced a fractional version of DP-coloring. They showed that unlike the fractional list chromatic number, the fractional DP-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{_{DP}}^*(G)$, can be arbitrarily larger than $χ^*(G)$, the graph's fractional chromatic number. We generalize a result of Alon, Tuza, and Voigt (1997) on the fractional list chromatic number of odd cycles, and, in the process, show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, $χ_{_{DP}}^*(C_{2k+1}) = χ^*(C_{2k+1})$. We also show that for any $n \geq 2$ and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, if $p^*$ is the solution in $(0,1)$ to $p=(1-p)^n$ then $χ_{_{DP}}^*(K_{n,m})\leq1/p^*$, and we prove a generalization of this result for multipartite graphs. Finally, we determine a lower bound on $χ_{_{DP}}^*(K_{2,m})$ for any $m \geq 3$.

DP-4-coloring of planar graphs with some restrictions on cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 344 (2021) 112568 • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring was introduced by Dvořák and Postle as a generalization of list coloring. It was originally used to solve a longstanding conjecture by Borodin, stating that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 to 8 is 3-choosable. In this paper, we give three sufficient conditions for a planar graph to be DP-4-colorable. Actually all the results (Theorem 1.3, 1.4 and 1.7) are stated in the ``color extendability'' form, and uniformly proved by vertex identification and discharging method.

Equitable Colorings of Borel Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hajnal and Szemerédi proved that if $G$ is a finite graph with maximum degree $Δ$, then for every integer $k \geqslant Δ+1$, $G$ has a proper coloring with $k$ colors in which every two color classes differ in size at most by $1$; such colorings are called equitable. We obtain an analog of this result for infinite graphs in the Borel setting. Specifically, we show that if $G$ is an aperiodic Borel graph of finite maximum degree $Δ$, then for each $k \geqslant Δ+ 1$, $G$ has a Borel proper $k$-coloring in which every two color classes are related by an element of the Borel full semigroup of $G$. In particular, such colorings are equitable with respect to every $G$-invariant probability measure. We also establish a measurable version of a result of Kostochka and Nakprasit on equitable $Δ$-colorings of graphs with small average degree. Namely, we prove that if $Δ\geqslant 3$, $G$ does not contain a clique on $Δ+ 1$ vertices, and $μ$ is an atomless $G$-invariant probability measure such that the average degree of $G$ with respect to $μ$ is at most $Δ/5$, then $G$ has a $μ$-equitable $Δ$-coloring. As steps towards the proof of this result, we establish measurable and list coloring extensions of a strengthening of Brooks's theorem due to Kostochka and Nakprasit.

Planar graphs without 7-cycles and butterflies are DP-4-colorable

DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring, introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2017. It is well-known that there are non-4-choosable planar graphs. Much attention has recently been put on sufficient conditions for planar graphs to be DP-$4$-colorable. In particular, for each $k \in \{3, 4, 5, 6\}$, every planar graph without $k$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph without $7$-cycles and butterflies is DP-$4$-colorable. Our proof can be easily modified to prove other sufficient conditions that forbid clusters formed by many triangles.

Cover and variable degeneracy

Let $f$ be a nonnegative integer valued function on the vertex set of a graph. A graph is \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate} if each nonempty subgraph $Γ$ has a vertex $v$ such that $\mathrm{deg}_Γ(v) < f(v)$. In this paper, we define a new concept, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, which generalizes list coloring, signed coloring, DP-coloring, $L$-forested-coloring, and $(f_{1}, f_{2}, \dots, f_{s})$-partition. A \textbf{cover} of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ with vertex set $V(H) = \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} X_{v}$, where $X_{v} = \{(v, 1), (v, 2), \dots, (v, s)\}$; the edge set $\mathscr{M} = \bigcup_{uv \in E(G)}\mathscr{M}_{uv}$, where $\mathscr{M}_{uv}$ is a matching between $X_{u}$ and $X_{v}$. A vertex set $R \subseteq V(H)$ is a \textbf{transversal} of $H$ if $|R \cap X_{v}| = 1$ for each $v \in V(G)$. A transversal $R$ is a \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate transversal} if $H[R]$ is strictly $f$-degenerate. The main result of this paper is a degree type result, which generalizes Brooks' theorem, Gallai's theorem, degree-choosable result, signed degree-colorable result, and DP-degree-colorable result. We also give some structural results on critical graphs with respect to strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. Using these results, we can uniformly prove many new and known results. In the final section, we pose some open problems.

Variable degeneracy on toroidal graphs

DP-coloring was introduced by Dvořák and Postle as a generalization of list coloring and signed coloring. A new coloring, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, is a further generalization of DP-coloring and $L$-forested-coloring. In this paper, we present some structural results on planar and toroidal graphs with forbidden configurations, and establish some sufficient conditions for the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversal based on these structural results. Consequently, (i) every toroidal graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.2 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (ii) every toroidal graph without $4$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (iii) every planar graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.3 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$. These results improve upon previous results on DP-$4$-coloring [Discrete Math. 341~(7) (2018) 1983--1986; Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. 43~(3) (2020) 2271--2285] and (list) vertex arboricity [Discrete Math. 333 (2014) 101--105; Int. J. Math. Stat. 16~(1) (2015) 97--105; Iranian Math. Soc. 42~(5) (2016) 1293--1303].
Generalization of some results on list coloring and DP-coloring
In this work, we introduce DPG-coloring using the concepts of DP-coloring and variable degeneracy to modify the proofs on the following papers: (i) DP-3-coloring of planar graphs without $4$, $9$-cycles and cycles of two lengths from $\{6, 7, 8\}$ (R. Liu, S. Loeb, M. Rolek, Y. Yin, G. Yu, Graphs and Combinatorics 35(3) (2019) 695-705), (ii) Every planar graph without $i$-cycles adjacent simultaneously to $j$-cycles and $k$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable when $\{i, j, k\}=\{3, 4, 5\}$ (P. Sittitrai, K. Nakprasit, arXiv:1801.06760(2019) preprint), (iii) Every planar graph is $5$-choosable (C. Thomassen, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 62 (1994) 180-181). Using this modification, we obtain more results on list coloring, DP-coloring, list-forested coloring, and variable degeneracy.

On the Chromatic Polynomial and Counting DP-Colorings
The chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted $P(G,m)$, is equal to the number of proper $m$-colorings of $G$. The list color function of graph $G$, denoted $P_{\ell}(G,m)$, is a list analogue of the chromatic polynomial that has been studied since 1992, primarily through comparisons with the corresponding chromatic polynomial. DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring recently introduced by Dvořák and Postle. In this paper, we introduce a DP-coloring analogue of the chromatic polynomial called the DP color function, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, and ask several fundamental open questions about it, making progress on some of them. Motivated by known results related to the list color function, we show that while the DP color function behaves similar to the list color function for some graphs, there are also some surprising differences. For example, Wang, Qian, and Yan recently showed that if $G$ is a connected graph with $l$ edges, then $P_{\ell}(G,m)=P(G,m)$ whenever $m > \frac{l-1}{\ln(1+ \sqrt{2})}$, but we will show that for any $g \geq 3$ there exists a graph, $G$, with girth $g$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) < P(G,m)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. We also study the asymptotics of $P(G,m) - P_{DP}(G,m)$ for a fixed graph $G$. We develop techniques to compute $P_{DP}(G,m)$ exactly and apply them to certain classes of graphs such as chordal graphs, unicyclic graphs, and cycles with a chord. Finally, we make progress towards showing that for any graph $G$, there is a $p$ such that $P_{DP}(G \vee K_p, m) = P(G \vee K_p , m)$ for large enough $m$.

Proof of the List Coloring Conjecture for line perfect multigraphs
We prove that for a line perfect multigraph the chromatic index is equal to the list chromatic index. This is a generalization of Galvin's result on bipartite multigraphs. Soon after the first version was submitted to arxiv, I found out that the same result has already been achieved in an older paper by Peterson and Woodall, by a similar but not entirely the same method.
