Pieri rules for the K-theory of cominuscule Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove Pieri formulas for the multiplication with special Schubert classes in the K-theory of all cominuscule Grassmannians. For Grassmannians of type A this gives a new proof of a formula of Lenart. Our formula is new for Lagrangian Grassmannians, and for orthogonal Grassmannians it proves a special case of a conjectural Littlewood-Richardson rule of Thomas and Yong. Recent work of Thomas and Yong and of E. Clifford has shown that the full Littlewood-Richardson rule for orthogonal Grassmannians follows from the Pieri case proved here. We describe the K-theoretic Pieri coefficients both as integers determined by positive recursive identities and as the number of certain tableaux. The proof is based on a computation of the sheaf Euler characteristic of triple intersections of Schubert varieties, where at least one Schubert variety is special.

The number of extremal components of an extremal measure
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients can be calculated using a certain class of measures, and these measures have a rigidity property when the coefficient is equal to 1. Rigid measures decompose uniquely into sums of extremal rigid measures. We show that the number of extremal summands is closely related with geometric data easily obtained from the support of the measure.

K-theoretic Schubert calculus for OG(n,2n+1) and jeu de taquin for shifted increasing tableaux
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. 690 (2014), 51-63 • View PublicationBIB
We present a proof of a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the K-theory of odd orthogonal Grassmannians OG(n,2n+1), as conjectured in [Thomas-Yong '09]. Specifically, we prove that rectification using the jeu de taquin for increasing shifted tableaux introduced there, is well-defined and gives rise to an associative product. Recently, [Buch-Ravikumar '09] proved a Pieri rule for OG(n,2n+1) that [Feigenbaum-Sergel '09] showed confirms a special case of the conjecture. Together, these results imply the aforementioned conjecture.

Matrix Pairs over Valuation Rings and R-Valued Littlewood-Richardson Fillings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the theory of Littlewood-Richardson fillings (defined over the non-negative integers) to include diagrams with rows and boxes of real-valued length. We realize such fillings as invariants of matrix pairs over rings with a real-valued valuation. We then prove a bijection between pairs of fillings determined by a matrix pair, and connect this to the classical row-switching bijection for Littlewoo-Richardson fillings. We utilize matrix calculations to interpret continuous deformations of generalized Littlewood-Richardson fillings.

Hall polynomials via automorphisms of short exact sequences
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory 15 (2012), 449-481 • View PublicationBIB
We present a sum-product formula for the classical Hall polynomial which is based on tableaux that have been introduced by T. Klein in 1969. In the formula, each summand corresponds to a Klein tableau, while the product is taken over the cardinalities of automorphism groups of short exact sequences which are derived from the tableau. For each such sequence, one can read off from the tableau the summands in an indecomposable decomposition, and the size of their homomorphism and automorphism groups. Klein tableaux are refinements of Littlewood-Richardson tableaux in the sense that each entry $\ell \geq 2$ carries a subscript $r$. We describe module theoretic and categorical properties shared by short exact sequences which have the same symbol $\ell_r$ in a given row in their Klein tableau. Moreover, we determine the interval in the Auslander-Reiten quiver in which indecomposable sequences of $p^n$-bounded groups which carry such a symbol occur.

A family of reductions for Schubert intersection problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We produce a family of reductions for Schubert intersection problems whose applicability is checked by calculating a linear combination of the dimensions involved. These reductions do not alter the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient, and they lead to an explicit solution of the intersection problem when this coefficient is 1.

Skew Littlewood-Richardson rules from Hopf algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use Hopf algebras to prove a version of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for skew Schur functions, which implies a conjecture of Assaf and McNamara. We also establish skew Littlewood-Richardson rules for Schur P- and Q-functions and noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, as well as skew Pieri rules for k-Schur functions, dual k-Schur functions, and for the homology of the affine Grassmannian of the symplectic group.
Refinements of the Littlewood-Richardson Rule

In the prequel to this paper, we showed how results of Mason involving a new combinatorial formula for polynomials that are now known as Demazure atoms (characters of quotients of Demazure modules, called standard bases by Lascoux and Schutzenberger) could be used to define a new basis for the ring of quasisymmetric functions we call Quasisymmetric Schur functions (QS functions for short). In this paper we develop the combinatorics of these polynomials futher, by showing that the product of a Schur function and a Demazure atom has a positive expansion in terms of Demazure atoms. As a by-product, using the fact that both a QS function and a Demazure character have explicit expressions as a positive sum of atoms, we obtain the expansion of a product of a Schur function with a QS function (Demazure character) as a positive sum of QS functions (Demazure characters). Our formula for the coefficients in the expansion of a product of a Demazure character and a Schur function into Demazure characters is similar to known results and includes in particular the famous Littlewood-Richardson rule for the expansion of a product of Schur functions in terms of the Schur basis.

Admissible Pictures and Littlewood-Richardson Crystals

We present a one-to-one correspondence between the set of admissible pictures and the Littlewood-Richardson crystals. As a simple consequence, we shall show that the set of pictures does not depend on the choice of admissible orders.

On Young tableau involutions and patterns in permutations
This thesis deals with three different aspects of the combinatorics of permutations. In the first two papers, two flavours of pattern avoiding permutations are examined; and in the third paper Young tableaux, which are closely related to permutations via representation theory, are studied. In the first paper we give solutations to several interesting problems regarding pattern avoiding doubly alternating permutations, such as finding a bijection between 1234-avoiding permutations and 1234-avoiding doubly alternating permutations of twice the size. In the second paper partial permutations which can be extended to pattern avoiding permutations are examined. A general algorithm is presented which is subsequently used to solve many different problems. The third paper deals with involutions on Young tableaux. There is a surprisingly large collection of relations among these involutions and in the paper we make the effort to study them systematically in order to create a coherent theory. The most interesting result is that for Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, $a^3=1$, wher5e $a$ is the composition of three different involutions: the fundamental symmetry map, the reversal and rotation involutions.
Linear time equivalence of Littlewood--Richardson coefficient symmetry maps
Published in Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. Proceedings, 21st International Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC 2009), (2009), 127-144 • View PublicationBIB
Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer have completely characterized by Knuth and dual Knuth equivalence a bijective proof of the conjugation symmetry of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Tableau-switching provides an algorithm to produce such a bijective proof. Fulton has shown that the White and the Hanlon-Sundaram maps are versions of that bijection. In this paper one exhibits explicitly the Yamanouchi word produced by that conjugation symmetry map which on its turn leads to a new and very natural version of the same map already considered independently. A consequence of this latter construction is that using notions of Relative Computational Complexity we are allowed to show that this conjugation symmetry map is linear time reducible to the Schutzenberger involution and reciprocally. Thus the Benkart-Sottile-Stroomer conjugation symmetry map with the two mentioned versions, the three versions of the commutative symmetry map, and Schutzenberger involution, are linear time reducible to each other. This answers a question posed by Pak and Vallejo.

Generalised Stretched Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1829-1842 • View PublicationBIB
The Littlewood-Richardson (LR) coefficient counts among many other things the LR tableaux of a given shape and a given content. We prove, that the number of LR tableaux weakly increases if one adds to the shape and the content the shape and the content of another LR tableau. We also investigate the behaviour of the number of LR tableaux, if one repeatedly adds to the shape another shape with either fixed or arbitrary content. This is a generalisation of the stretched LR coefficients, where one repeatedly adds the same shape and content to itself.

The entries in the LR-tableau
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 268 (2011), 211-222 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be the Littlewood-Richardson tableau corresponding to an embedding $M$ of a subgroup in a finite abelian $p$-group. Each individual entry in $Γ$ yields information about the homomorphisms from $M$ into a particular subgroup embedding, and hence determines the position of $M$ within the category of subgroup embeddings. Conversely, this category provides a categorification for LR-tableaux in the sense that all subgroup embeddings corresponding to a given LR-tableau share certain homological properties.

Chopped and sliced cones and representations of Kac-Moody algebras

We introduce the notion of a chopped and sliced cone in combinatorial geometry and prove two structure theorems for the number of integral points in the individual slices of such a cone. We observe that this notion applies to weight multiplicities of Kac-Moody algebras and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of semisimple Lie algebras, where we obtain the corresponding results.

Jeu de taquin and a monodromy problem for Wronskians of polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wronskian associates to d linearly independent polynomials of degree at most n, a non-zero polynomial of degree at most d(n-d). This can be viewed as giving a flat, finite morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to projective space of the same dimension. In this paper, we study the monodromy groupoid of this map. When the roots of the Wronskian are real, we show that the monodromy is combinatorially encoded by Schutzenberger's jeu de taquin; hence we obtain new geometric interpretations and proofs of a number of results from jeu de taquin theory, including the Littlewood-Richardson rule.

On the eigenvalues of Cayley graphs on the symmetric group generated by a complete multipartite set of transpositions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 32, no. 2, 155-185 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite simple graph $\cG$ with $n$ vertices, we can construct the Cayley graph on the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the edges of $\cG$, interpreted as transpositions. We show that, if $\cG$ is complete multipartite, the eigenvalues of the Laplacian of $\Cay(\cG)$ have a simple expression in terms of the irreducible characters of transpositions, and of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As a consequence we can prove that the Laplacians of $\cG$ and of $\Cay(\cG)$ have the same first nontrivial eigenvalue. This is equivalent to saying that Aldous's conjecture, asserting that the random walk and the interchange process have the same spectral gap, holds for complete multipartite graphs.

Towards a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Kac-Moody homogeneous spaces
We prove a general combinatorial formula yielding the intersection number $c_{u,v}^w$ of three particular $Λ$-minuscule Schubert classes in any Kac-Moody homogeneous space, generalising the Littlewood-Richardson rule. The combinatorics are based on jeu de taquin rectification in a poset defined by the heap of $w$.

Growth Diagrams for the Schubert Multiplication
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a partial generalization to Schubert calculus on flag varieties of the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule, in its version based on Schuetzenberger's jeu de taquin. More precisely, we describe certain structure constants expressing the product of a Schubert and a Schur polynomial. We use a generalization of Fomin's growth diagrams (for chains in Young's lattice of partitions) to chains of permutations in the so-called k-Bruhat order. Our work is based on the recent thesis of Beligan, in which he generalizes the classical plactic structure on words to chains in certain intervals in k-Bruhat order. Potential applications of our work include the generalization of the S_3-symmetric Littlewood-Richardson rule due to Thomas and Yong, which is based on Fomin's growth diagrams.
A hive model determination of multiplicity-free Schur function products and skew Schur functions
The hive model is a combinatorial device that may be used to determine Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and study their properties. It represents an alternative to the use of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Here properties of hives are used to determine all possible multiplicity-free Schur function products and skew Schur function expansions. This confirms the results of Stembridge, Gutschwager, and Thomas and Yong, and sheds light on the combinatorial origin of the conditions for being multiplicity-free, as well as illustrating some of the key features and power of the hive model.

An algorithmic Littlewood-Richardson rule

We introduce a Littlewood-Richardson rule based on an algorithmic deformation of skew Young diagrams and present a bijection with the classical rule. The result is a direct combinatorial interpretation and proof of the geometric rule presented by Coskun. We also present a corollary regarding the Specht modules of the intermediate diagrams.
