Some bijective correspondences involving domino tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a number of new combinatorial operations on skew semistandard domino tableaux, which together with constructions introduced earlier by C. Carre and B. Leclerc, define an elegant structure on the set of these tableaux, that closely parallels the structure defined in [math.CO/9908099] for ordinary skew semistandard tableaux, that is related to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. These operations are: (1) a bijection between semistandard domino tableaux and certain pairs of ordinary tableaux of the same weight that together fill the same shape; (2) a weight preserving transformation of domino tableaux to ordinary tableaux of a related shape (the correspondence involves 2-quotients) with the property that Yamanouchi domino tableaux correspond precisely to Littlewood-Richardson tableaux; (3) a correspondence between Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $λ$ and weight $μ$ and Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $μ'$ and weight $λ$, where $μ'$ is $μ$ scaled by a factor 2. The property at the heart of the structure so defined is that operations (1) and (2) commute with the coplactic operations (implicitly) defined by Carre and Leclerc. (1) elucidates their bijection analogous to that of Robinson (a.k.a. the Robinson-Schensted correspondence), while the operation of moving chains in domino tableaux underlying (2) is very similar to jeu de taquin.

Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients via Yang-Baxter Equation
Published in IMRN 2000, No. 14, 741-774 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to present an interpretation for the decomposition of the tensor product of two or more irreducible representations of GL(N) in terms of a system of quantum particles. Our approach is based on a certain scattering matrix that satisfies a Yang-Baxter type equation. The corresponding piecewise-linear transformations of parameters give a solution to the tetrahedron equation. These transformation maps are naturally related to the dual canonical bases for modules over the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(sl_n)$. A byproduct of our construction is an explicit description for the cone of Kashiwara's parametrizations of dual canonical bases. This solves a problem posed by Berenstein and Zelevinsky. We present a graphical interpretation of the scattering matrices in terms of web functions, which are related to honeycombs of Knutson and Tao.

Stanley symmetric functions and quiver varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula is general enough to give new expressions for all known types of Schubert polynomials. In the present paper we discuss the relationship between this formula and Stanley symmetric functions. We show that the coefficients obtained when a Stanley symmetric function is expressed in the basis of Schur functions are special cases of a class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients appearing in the formula for quiver varieties. We also prove that Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials (math.AG/9702012) satisfy the usual rule for a Schubert polynomial of a product of two permutations.

On a conjectured formula for quiver varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula involves a new class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, all of which surprisingly seem to be non-negative. We conjecture that each of these coefficients count the number of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux which satisfy certain conditions. In this paper I give a proof of this conjecture in the special case where the quiver variety can be described by at most four vector bundles. I also prove that the general conjecture follows from a simple combinatorial statement for which substantial computer verification has been obtained.

The Littlewood-Richardson rule, and related combinatorics
An introduction is given to the Littlewood-Richardson rule, and various combinatorial constructions related to it. We present a proof based on tableau switching, dual equivalence, and coplactic operations. We conclude with a section relating these fairly modern techniques to earlier work on the Littlewood-Richardson rule.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.

Mixed hook-length formula for degenerate affine Hecke algebras
Published in Lecture Notes in Math. 1815 (2003), 223-236 • Search Publication
Take the degenerate affine Hecke algebra $H_{l+m}$ corresponding to the group $GL_{l+m}$ over a $p$-adic field. Consider the $H_{l+m}$-module $W$ induced from the tensor product of the evaluation modules over the algebras $H_l$ and $H_m$. The module $W$ depends on two partitions $λ$ of $l$ and $μ$ of $m$, and on two complex numbers $z$ and $w$. There is a canonical operator $J$ acting in $W$, it corresponds to the rational Yang $R$-matrix. The algebra $H_{l+m}$ contains the symmetric group $S_{l+m}$, and $J$ commutes with the action of $S_{l+m}$ in $W$. Under this action, $W$ decomposes into irreducible subspaces according to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We compute the eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to certain multiplicity-free irreducible components of $W$. In particular, we obtain a nice formula for the ratio of two eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to the "highest" and "lowest" (multiplicity-free) irreducible components of $W$.

Symmetric Polynomials and $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$
Published in Represent. Theory 4 (2000), 46-63. • View PublicationBIB
We study the explicit formula of Lusztig's integral forms of the level one quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ in the endomorphism ring of symmetric functions in infinitely many variables tensored with the group algebra of $\mathbb Z$. Schur functions are realized as certain orthonormal basis vectors in the vertex representation associated to the standard Heisenberg algebra. In this picture the Littlewood-Richardson rule is expressed by integral formulas, and is used to define the action of Lusztig's $\mathbb Z[q, q]$-form of $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ on Schur polynomials.
A bijection between Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and rigged configurations
Published in Selecta Mathematica, N.S., 8 (2002) 67-135 • View PublicationBIB
A bijection is defined from Littlewood-Richardson tableaux to rigged configurations. It is shown that this map preserves the appropriate statistics, thereby proving a quasi-particle expression for the generalized Kostka polynomials, which are q-analogues of multiplicities in tensor products of irreducible general linear group modules indexed by rectangular partitions.

The saturation conjecture (after A. Knutson and T. Tao)
In this exposition we give a simple and complete treatment of A. Knutson and T. Tao's recent proof (http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/math.RT/9807160) of the saturation conjecture, which asserts that the Littlewood-Richardson semigroup is saturated. The main tool is Knutson and Tao's hive model for Berenstein-Zelevinsky polytopes. In an appendix of W. Fulton it is shown that the hive model is equivalent to the original Littlewood-Richardson rule.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials

We show that the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are values at 1 of certain parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for affine symmetric groups. These q-analogues of Littlewood-Richardson multiplicities coincide with those previously introduced in terms of ribbon tableaux.

The honeycomb model of GL(n) tensor products I: proof of the saturation conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the honeycomb model of BZ polytopes, which calculate Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, the tensor product rule for GL(n). Our main result is the existence of a particularly well-behaved honeycomb with given boundary conditions (choice of triple of representations to be tensored together). This honeycomb is necessarily integral, which proves the "saturation conjecture", extending results of Klyachko to give a complete answer to which L-R coefficients are positive. This in turn has as a consequence Horn's conjecture from 1962 characterizing the spectrum of the sum of two Hermitian matrices.

Graded characters of modules supported in the closure of a nilpotent conjugacy class
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of a natural family of graded GL(n)-modules supported in the closure of a nilpotent conjugacy class. These polynomials generalize the Kostka-Foulkes and are q-analogues of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients corresponding to arbitrary tensor products of irreducibles. Many properties and formulas for these polynomials are derived, such as a generalized Morris recurrence, q-Kostant formula, and a conjectural formula in terms of catabolizable tableaux and charge.

Affine type A crystal structure on tensor products of rectangles, Demazure characters, and nilpotent varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Answering a question of Kuniba, Misra, Okado, Takagi, and Uchiyama, it is shown that certain Demazure characters of affine type A, coincide with the graded characters of coordinate rings of closures of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices. This entails a translation of the affine type A crystal theory into the language of tableaux following Nakayashiki and Yamada, for the case of tensor products of the classical crystals indexed by rectangular partitions. In particular the explicit action of the zero-th crystal raising operator on the above crystals is given, and its direct connection with the generalized cocyclage on Littlewood-Richardson tableaux is explained.

Multi-atoms and monotonicity of generalized Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generalized Kostka polynomials are the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of certain graded GL(n)-modules. The former satisfy a monotonicity property arising from natural surjections of the corresponding modules. This monotonicity property is realized combinatorially by a directed system of order- and statistic-preserving embeddings between the sets of Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableaux that describe the generalized Kostka polynomials. Each set of LR tableaux is embedded into a cocyclage poset of column-strict tableaux of a fixed content, and the image is characterized in terms of catabolizable tableaux.

Inhomogeneous lattice paths, generalized Kostka polynomials and A$_{n-1}$ supernomials
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 202 (1999) 359-401 • View PublicationBIB
Inhomogeneous lattice paths are introduced as ordered sequences of rectangular Young tableaux thereby generalizing recent work on the Kostka polynomials by Nakayashiki and Yamada and by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. Motivated by these works and by Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases we define a statistic on paths yielding two novel classes of polynomials. One of these provides a generalization of the Kostka polynomials while the other, which we name the A$_{n-1}$ supernomial, is a $q$-deformation of the expansion coefficients of products of Schur polynomials. Many well-known results for Kostka polynomials are extended leading to representations of our polynomials in terms of a charge statistic on Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and in terms of fermionic configuration sums. Several identities for the generalized Kostka polynomials and the A$_{n-1}$ supernomials are proven or conjectured. Finally, a connection between the supernomials and Bailey's lemma is made.
