Enumerating coloured partitions in 2 and 3 dimensions
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 169 (2020) 479-505 • View Publication • BIB
We study generating functions of ordinary and plane partitions coloured by the action of a finite subgroup of the corresponding special linear group. After reviewing known results for the case of ordinary partitions, we formulate a conjecture concerning a factorisation property of the generating function of coloured plane partitions that can be thought of as an orbifold analogue of a conjecture of Maulik et al., now a theorem, in three-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas theory. We study natural quantisations of the generating functions arising from geometry, discuss a quantised version of our conjecture, and prove a positivity result for the quantised coloured plane partition function under a geometric assumption.

Pak-Stanley labeling for Central Graphical Arrangements
The original Pak-Stanley labeling was defined by Pak and Stanley as a bijective map from the set of regions of an extended Shi arrangement to the set of parking functions. This map was later generalized to other arrangements associated with graphs and directed multigraphs. In these more general cases the map is no longer bijective. However, it was shown Hopkins and Perkinson and then the first author that it is surjective to the set of the $G$-parking functions, where $G$ is the multigraph associated with the arrangement. This leads to a natural question: when is the generalized Pak-Stanley map bijective? In this paper we answer this question in the special case of central hyperplane arrangements, i.e. the case when all the hyperplanes of the arrangement pass through a common point.

Fractional coloring with local demands and applications to degree-sequence bounds on the independence number
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B. Volume 169, November 2024, Pages 298-337 • View Publication • BIB
In a fractional coloring, vertices of a graph are assigned measurable subsets of the real line and adjacent vertices receive disjoint subsets; the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at most $k$ if it has a fractional coloring in which each vertex receives a subset of $[0, 1]$ of measure at least $1/k$. We introduce and develop the theory of "fractional colorings with local demands" wherein each vertex "demands" a certain amount of color that is determined by local parameters such as its degree or the clique number of its neighborhood. This framework provides the natural setting in which to generalize degree-sequence type bounds on the independence number. Indeed, by Linear Programming Duality, all of the problems we study have an equivalent formulation as a problem concerning weighted independence numbers, and they often imply new bounds on the independence number. Our results and conjectures are inspired by many of the most classical results and important open problems concerning the independence number and the chromatic number, often simultaneously. We conjecture a local strengthening of both Shearer's bound on the independence number of triangle-free graphs and the fractional relaxation of Molloy's recent bound on their chromatic number, as well as a longstanding problem of Ajtai et al.\ on the independence number of $K_r$-free graphs and the fractional relaxations of Reed's $ω, Δ, χ$ Conjecture and the Total Coloring Conjecture. We prove an approximate version of the first two, and we prove "local demands" versions of Vizing's Theorem and of some $χ$-boundedness results.

Further results on the inducibility of $d$-ary trees
A subset of leaves of a rooted tree induces a new tree in a natural way. The density of a tree $D$ inside a larger tree $T$ is the proportion of such leaf-induced subtrees in $T$ that are isomorphic to $D$ among all those with the same number of leaves as $D$. The inducibility of $D$ measures how large this density can be as the size of $T$ tends to infinity. In this paper, we explicitly determine the inducibility in some previously unknown cases and find general upper and lower bounds, in particular in the case where $D$ is balanced, i.e., when its branches have at least almost the same size. Moreover, we prove a result on the speed of convergence of the maximum density of $D$ in strictly $d$-ary trees $T$ (trees where every internal vertex has precisely $d$ children) of a given size $n$ to the inducibility as $n \to \infty$, which supports an open conjecture.

On identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type
Published in Ramanujan Journal 11 (2006) 403--429 • View Publication • BIB
A generalized Bailey pair, which contains several special cases considered by Bailey (\emph{Proc. London Math. Soc. (2)}, 50 (1949), 421--435), is derived and used to find a number of new Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. Consideration of associated $q$-difference equations points to a connection with a mild extension of Gordon's combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities (\emph{Amer. J. Math.}, 83 (1961), 393--399). This, in turn, allows the formulation of natural combinatorial interpretations of many of the identities in Slater's list (\emph{Proc. London Math. Soc. (2)} 54 (1952), 147--167), as well as the new identities presented here. A list of 26 new double sum--product Rogers-Ramanujan type identities are included as an appendix.

Poset models for Weyl group analogs of symmetric functions and Schur functions
The `Weyl symmetric functions' studied here naturally generalize classical symmetric (polynomial) functions, and `Weyl bialternants,' sometimes also called Weyl characters, analogize the Schur functions. For this generalization, the underlying symmetry group is a finite Weyl group. A `splitting poset' for a Weyl bialternant is an edge-colored ranked poset possessing a certain structural property and a natural weighting of its elements so that the weighted sum of poset elements is the given Weyl bialternant. Connected such posets are of combinatorial interest in part because they are rank symmetric and rank unimodal and have nice quotient-of-product expressions for their rank generating functions. Supporting graphs of weight bases for irreducible semisimple Lie algebra representations provide one large family of examples. However, many splitting posets can be obtained outside of this Lie theoretic context. This monograph provides a tutorial on Weyl bialternants / Weyl symmetric functions and splitting posets that is largely self-contained and independent of Lie algebra representation theory. New results are also obtained.

Linear versus spin: representation theory of the symmetric groups
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 1, pp. 249-280 • View Publication • BIB
We relate the linear asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric groups to its spin counterpart. In particular, we give explicit formulas which express the normalized irreducible spin characters evaluated on a strict partition $ξ$ with analogous normalized linear characters evaluated on the double partition $D(ξ)$. We also relate some natural filtration on the usual (linear) Kerov-Olshanski algebra of polynomial functions on the set of Young diagrams with its spin counterpart. Finally, we give a spin counterpart to Stanley formula for the characters of the symmetric groups.

A formula for the partition function that "counts"
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 20 (2016) 301--316 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a combinatorial multisum expression for the number $D(n,k)$ of partitions of $n$ with Durfee square of order $k$. An immediate corollary is therefore a combinatorial formula for $p(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$. We then study $D(n,k)$ as a quasipolynomial. We consider the natural polynomial approximation $\tilde{D}(n,k)$ to the quasipolynomial representation of $D(n,k)$. Numerically, the sum $\sum_{1\leq k \leq \sqrt{n}} \tilde{D}(n,k)$ appears to be extremely close to the initial term of the Hardy--Ramanujan--Rademacher convergent series for $p(n)$.

An equivalent formulation of the Fan-Raspaud Conjecture and related problems
Published in Ars Math. Contemp. 18, No. 1, 87-103 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In 1994, it was conjectured by Fan and Raspaud that every simple bridgeless cubic graph has three perfect matchings whose intersection is empty. In this paper we answer a question recently proposed by Mkrtchyan and Vardanyan, by giving an equivalent formulation of the Fan-Raspaud Conjecture. We also study a possibly weaker conjecture originally proposed by the first author, which states that in every simple bridgeless cubic graph there exist two perfect matchings such that the complement of their union is a bipartite graph. Here, we show that this conjecture can be equivalently stated using a variant of Petersen-colourings, we prove it for graphs having oddness at most four and we give a natural extension to bridgeless cubic multigraphs and to certain cubic graphs having bridges.

Intersection theorems for families of matchings of complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs
The celebrated {Erdős-Ko-Rado} Theorem states that for $n \geq 2k$ a family $\mathscr{F}$ of $k$ subsets of $[n]$ for which each pair of members of $\mathscr{F}$ have a non-empty intersection has size at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ and for $n >2k$ has exactly this size if and only if it is the family of all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ containing a fixed element $x\in [n]$. Since its discovery, the {Erdős-Ko-Rado} Theorem has be generalised extensively and many variants have been found for structures other than sets. One such variant is for permutations and so-called generalised permutations. These structures are equivalent to $r$-matchings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$ with $r \leq \min\{n,m\}$ in a natural way. The culmination of results of several groups of authors constitute an {Erdős-Ko-Rado} Theorem for families of generalised permutations and so for families of $r$-matchings of $K_{n,m}$ for all feasible values of $r,n$ and $m$. In this paper we generalise this by proving an {Erdős-Ko-Rado} Theorem for families of $r$-matchings of complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs, which can be seen as a partial generalisation of the {Erdős-Ko-Rado} Theorem itself. We also prove similar results for $t$-intersecting families, and for families of matchings whose members have sizes from some set of integers $R$, rather than a single size $r$.

Upper Tails for Edge Eigenvalues of Random Graphs
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 34 (2), 1069-1083, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The upper tail problem for the largest eigenvalue of the Erdős--Rényi random graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ is to estimate the probability that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ exceeds its typical value by a factor of $1+δ$. In this note we show that for $δ>0$ fixed, and $p \rightarrow 0$ such that $n^{\frac{1}{2}} p \rightarrow \infty$, the upper tail probability for the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ is $$\exp\left[-(1+o(1)) \min\left\{\tfrac{(1+δ)^2}{2}, δ(1+δ) \right\} n^{2}p^{2}\log (1/p)\right].$$ In the same regime of $p$, we show that the second largest eigenvalue $λ_2( \mathcal G_{n,p})$ of the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ satisfies $$\mathbb P(λ_2(\mathcal G_{n,p})\ge δnp) = \exp\left[-(1+o(1)) \tfrac{1}{2} δ^2n^2p^2 \log (1/p) \right],$$ where $δ=δ_n < 1$ can depend on $n$ such that $δn^{\frac{1}{2}} p \rightarrow \infty$, which covers deviations of $λ_2(\mathcal G_{n,p})$ between $n^{\frac{1}{2}}$ and $np$. Our arguments build on recent results on the large deviations of the largest eigenvalue and related non-linear functions of the adjacency matrix in terms of natural mean-field entropic variational problems.

Asymptotic enumeration of Cayley digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we show that almost all Cayley digraphs have automorphism group as small as possible; that is, they are digraphical regular representations (DRRs). More precisely, we show that as $r$ tends to infinity, for every finite group $R$ of order $r$, out of all possible Cayley digraphs on $R$ the proportion whose automorphism group is as small as possible tends to $1$. This proves a natural conjecture first proposed in $1982$ by Babai and Godsil.

On the Further Structure of the Finite Free Convolutions
Since the celebrated resolution of Kadison-Singer (via the Paving Conjecture) by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava, much study has been devoted to further understanding and generalizing the techniques of their proof. Specifically, their barrier method was crucial to achieving the required polynomial root bounds on the finite free convolution. But unfortunately this method required individual analysis for each usage, and the existence of a larger encapsulating framework is an important open question. In this paper, we make steps toward such a framework by generalizing their root bound to all differential operators. We further conjecture a large class of root bounds, the resolution of which would require for more robust techniques. We further give an important counterexample to a very natural multivariate version of their bound, which if true would have implied tight bounds for the Paving Conjecture.

A combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Enomoto showed for finite dimensional algebras that the classification of exact structures on the category of finitely generated projective modules can be reduced to the classification of 2-regular simple modules. In this article, we give a combinatorial classification of 2-regular simple modules for Nakayama algebras and we use this classification to answer several natural questions such as when there is a unique exact structure on the category of finitely generated projective modules for Nakayama algebras. We also classify 1-regular simple modules, quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras and Nakayama algebras of global dimension at most two. It turns out that most classes are enumerated by well-known combinatorial sequences, such as Fibonacci, Riordan and Narayana numbers. We first obtain interpretations in terms of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the algebra using homological algebra, and then apply suitable bijections to relate these to combinatorial statistics on Dyck paths.
Cyclic quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The ring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions and its non-Escher subring are introduced in this paper. A natural basis consists of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions; for the non-Escher subring they arise as toric $P$-partition enumerators, for toric posets $P$ with a total cyclic order. The associated structure constants are determined by cyclic shuffles of permutations. We then prove the following positivity phenomenon: for every non-hook shape $λ$, the coefficients in the expansion of the Schur function $s_λ$ in terms of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions are nonnegative. The proof relies on the existence of a cyclic descent map on the standard Young tableaux (SYT) of shape $λ$. The theory has applications to the enumeration of cyclic shuffles and SYT by cyclic descents.

On Word and Gómez Graphs and Their Automorphism Groups in the Degree Diameter Problem
One of the prominent areas of research in graph theory is the degree-diameter problem, in which we seek to determine how many vertices a graph may have when constrained to a given degree and diameter. Different variants of this problem are obtained by considering further restrictions on the graph, such as whether it is directed, undirected, mixed, vertex-transitive etc. The currently best known extremal constructions are the Gómez graphs, both when considered as directed and undirected. As the Gómez graphs are similar to the Faber-Moore-Chen graphs, we give a natural generalisation of their definition which we call word graphs. We then prove that the Gómez graphs are as large as possible word graphs for given degree and diameter. Further, we provide a test to determine the full automorphism group of a word graph, and apply it to the extremal directed Gómez graphs to settle the previously open question of when the Gómez graphs are also Cayley graphs. Finally, we conclude with a brief list of interesting related open problems.
Combinatorics of cluster structures in Schubert varieties
We give an explicit combinatorial description of cluster structures in Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian in terms of (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This description is a natural generalization of the description given by (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian and has been believed by experts essentially since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety admit cluster structures. We also adapt a construction of (Karpman 2016) to build cluster seeds associated to reduced expressions. Further, we explicitly describe cluster structures in skew Schubert varieties using plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.

The entropy of lies: playing twenty questions with a liar
`Twenty questions' is a guessing game played by two players: Bob thinks of an integer between $1$ and $n$, and Alice's goal is to recover it using a minimal number of Yes/No questions. Shannon's entropy has a natural interpretation in this context. It characterizes the average number of questions used by an optimal strategy in the distributional variant of the game: let $μ$ be a distribution over $[n]$, then the average number of questions used by an optimal strategy that recovers $x\sim μ$ is between $H(μ)$ and $H(μ)+1$. We consider an extension of this game where at most $k$ questions can be answered falsely. We extend the classical result by showing that an optimal strategy uses roughly $H(μ) + k H_2(μ)$ questions, where $H_2(μ) = \sum_x μ(x)\log\log\frac{1}{μ(x)}$. This also generalizes a result by Rivest et al. for the uniform distribution. Moreover, we design near optimal strategies that only use comparison queries of the form `$x \leq c$?' for $c\in[n]$. The usage of comparison queries lends itself naturally to the context of sorting, where we derive sorting algorithms in the presence of adversarial noise.

Discrepancy in random hypergraph models
We study hypergraph discrepancy in two closely related random models of hypergraphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. The first model, $\mathcal{H}_1$, is when every vertex is present in exactly $t$ randomly chosen hyperedges. The premise of this is closely tied to, and motivated by the Beck-Fiala conjecture. The second, perhaps more natural model, $\mathcal{H}_2$, is when the entries of the $m \times n$ incidence matrix is sampled in an i.i.d. fashion, each with probability $p$. We prove the following: 1. In $\mathcal{H}_1$, when $\log^{10}n \ll t \ll \sqrt{n}$, and $m = n$, we show that the discrepancy of the hypergraph is almost surely at most $O(\sqrt{t})$. This improves upon a result of Ezra and Lovett for this range of parameters. 2. In $\mathcal{H}_2$, when $p= \frac{1}{2}$, and $n = Ω(m \log m)$, we show that the discrepancy is almost surely at most $1$. This answers an open problem of Hoberg and Rothvoss.
A general lower bound for the domination number of cylindrical graphs
Published in Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. 43, (2020) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present a lower bound for the domination number of the Cartesian product of a path and a cycle, that is tight if the length of the cycle is a multiple of five. This bound improves the natural lower bound obtained by using the domination number of the Cartesian product of two paths, that is the best one known so far.
