How many cliques can a clique cover cover?
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work examines the problem of clique enumeration on a graph by exploiting its clique covers. The principle of inclusion/exclusion is applied to determine the number of cliques of size $r$ in the graph union of a set $\mathcal{C} = \{c_1, \ldots, c_m\}$ of $m$ cliques. This leads to a deeper examination of the sets involved and to an orbit partition, $Γ$, of the power set $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{N}_{m})$ of $\mathcal{N}_{m} = \{1, \ldots, m\}$. Applied to the cliques, this partition gives insight into clique enumeration and yields new results on cliques within a clique cover, including expressions for the number of cliques of size $r$ as well as generating functions for the cliques on these graphs. The quotient graph modulo this partition provides a succinct representation to determine cliques and maximal cliques in the graph union. The partition also provides a natural and powerful framework for related problems, such as the enumeration of induced connected components, by drawing upon a connection to extremal set theory through intersecting sets.

Signed tropical halfspaces and convexity
We extend the fundamentals for tropical convexity beyond the tropically positive orthant expanding the theory developed by Loho and Végh (ITCS 2020). We study two notions of convexity for signed tropical numbers called 'TO-convexity' (formerly 'signed tropical convexity') and the novel notion 'TC-convexity'. We derive several separation results for TO-convexity and TC-convexity. A key ingredient is a thorough understanding of TC-hemispaces - those TC-convex sets whose complement is also TC-convex. Furthermore, we use new insights in the interplay between convexity over Puiseux series and its signed valuation. Remarkably, TC-convexity can be seen as a natural convexity notion for representing oriented matroids as it arises from a generalization of the composition operation of vectors in an oriented matroid. We make this explicit by giving representations of linear spaces over the real tropical hyperfield in terms of TC-convexity.

Every CBER is smooth below the Carlson-Simpson generic partition
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $E$ be a countable Borel equivalence relation on the space $\mathcal{E}_{\infty}$ of all infinite partitions of the natural numbers. We show that $E$ coincides with equality below a Carlson-Simpson generic element of $\mathcal{E}_{\infty}$. In contrast, we show that there is a hypersmooth equivalence relation on $\mathcal{E}_{\infty}$ which is Borel bireducible with $E_1$ on every Carlson-Simpson cube. Our arguments are classical and require no background in forcing.

The Frobenius number for sequences of triangular numbers associated with number of solutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The famous linear diophantine problem of Frobenius is the problem to determine the largest integer (Frobenius number) whose number of representations in terms of $a_1,\dots,a_k$ is at most zero, that is not representable. In other words, all the integers greater than this number can be represented for at least one way. One of the natural generalizations of this problem is to find the largest integer (generalized Frobenius number) whose number of representations is at most a given nonnegative integer $p$. It is easy to find the explicit form of this number in the case of two variables. However, no explicit form has been known even in any special case of three variables. In this paper we are successful to show explicit forms of the generalized Frobenius numbers of the triples of triangular numbers. When $p=0$, their Frobenius number is given by Robles-Pérez and Rosales in 2018.

Coloring hypergraphs with excluded minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hadwiger's conjecture, among the most famous open problems in graph theory, states that every graph that does not contain $K_t$ as a minor is properly $(t-1)$-colorable. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that a natural extension of Hadwiger's problem to hypergraph coloring exists, and to derive some first partial results and applications. Generalizing ordinary graph minors to hypergraphs, we say that a hypergraph $H_1$ is a minor of a hypergraph $H_2$, if a hypergraph isomorphic to $H_1$ can be obtained from $H_2$ via a finite sequence of vertex- and hyperedge-deletions, and hyperedge contractions. We first show that a weak extension of Hadwiger's conjecture to hypergraphs holds true: For every $t \ge 1$, there exists a finite (smallest) integer $h(t)$ such that every hypergraph with no $K_t$-minor is $h(t)$-colorable, and we prove $$\left\lceil\frac{3}{2}(t-1)\right\rceil \le h(t) \le 2g(t)$$ where $g(t)$ denotes the maximum chromatic number of graphs with no $K_t$-minor. Using the recent result by Delcourt and Postle that $g(t)=O(t \log \log t)$, this yields $h(t)=O(t \log \log t)$. We further conjecture that $h(t)=\left\lceil\frac{3}{2}(t-1)\right\rceil$, i.e., that every hypergraph with no $K_t$-minor is $\left\lceil\frac{3}{2}(t-1)\right\rceil$-colorable for all $t \ge 1$, and prove this conjecture for all hypergraphs with independence number at most $2$. By considering special classes of hypergraphs, the above additionally has some interesting applications for ordinary graph coloring, such as: -graphs of chromatic number $C k t \log \log t$ contain $K_t$-minors with $k$-edge-connected branch-sets, -graphs of chromatic number $C q t \log \log t$ contain $K_t$-minors with modulo-$q$-connected branch sets, -by considering cycle hypergraphs of digraphs we recover known results on strong minors in digraphs of large dichromatic number as special cases.

On isomorphism classes of leaf-induced subtrees in topological trees
A subtree can be induced in a natural way by a subset of leaves of a rooted tree. We study the number of nonisomorphic such subtrees induced by leaves (leaf-induced subtrees) of a rooted tree with no vertex of outdegree 1 (topological tree). We show that only stars and binary caterpillars have the minimum nonisomorphic leaf-induced subtrees among all topological trees with a given number of leaves. We obtain a closed formula and a recursive formula for the families of $d$-ary caterpillars and complete $d$-ary trees, respectively. An asymptotic formula is found for complete $d$-ary trees using polynomial recurrences. We also show that the complete binary tree of height $h>1$ contains precisely $\lfloor 2(1.24602...)^{2^h}\rfloor$ nonisomorphic leaf-induced subtrees.

Steiner Type Packing Problems in Digraphs: A Survey
Graph packing problem is one of the central problems in graph theory and combinatorial optimization. The famous Steiner tree packing problem in undirected graphs has become an well-established area. It is natural to extend this problem to digraphs, and such problems in digraphs are called directed Steiner type packing problems. In this survey we overview known results on several directed Steiner type packing problems. The paper is divided into seven sections: introduction, directed Steiner tree packing problem, directed Steiner path packing problem, directed pendant Steiner tree packing problem, strong subgraph packing problem, strong arc decomposition problem, directed Steiner cycle packing problem. This survey also contains some conjectures and open problems for further study.

We show that every set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper density can be shifted to contain the restricted sumset $\{b_1 + b_2 : b_1, b_2\in B \text{ and } b_1 \neq b_2 \}$ for some infinite set $B \subset A$.
On five types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
A crucial permutation is a permutation that avoids a given set of prohibitions, but any of its extensions, in an allowable way, results in a prohibition being introduced. In this paper, we introduce five natural types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns, notably quadrocrucial permutations that are linked most closely to Erdős-Szekeres extremal permutations. The way we define right-crucial and bicrucial permutations is consistent with the definition of respective permutations studied in the literature in the contexts of other prohibitions. For each of the five types, we provide its characterization in terms of Young tableaux via the RSK correspondence. Moreover, we use the characterizations to prove that the number of such permutations of length $n$ is growing when $n\to\infty$, and to enumerate minimal crucial permutations in all but one case. We also provide other enumerative results.
Monogamy of entanglement between cones
Published in Math. Ann. (2024) • View Publication • BIB
A separable quantum state shared between parties $A$ and $B$ can be symmetrically extended to a quantum state shared between party $A$ and parties $B_1,\ldots ,B_k$ for every $k\in\mathbf{N}$. Quantum states that are not separable, i.e., entangled, do not have this property. This phenomenon is known as "monogamy of entanglement". We show that monogamy is not only a feature of quantum theory, but that it characterizes the minimal tensor product of general pairs of convex cones $\mathsf{C}_A$ and $\mathsf{C}_B$: The elements of the minimal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\min} \mathsf{C}_B$ are precisely the tensors that can be symmetrically extended to elements in the maximal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\max} \mathsf{C}^{\otimes_{\max} k}_B$ for every $k\in\mathbf{N}$. Equivalently, the minimal tensor product of two cones is the intersection of the nested sets of $k$-extendible tensors. It is a natural question when the minimal tensor product $\mathsf{C}_A\otimes_{\min} \mathsf{C}_B$ coincides with the set of $k$-extendible tensors for some finite $k$. We show that this is universally the case for every cone $\mathsf{C}_A$ if and only if $\mathsf{C}_B$ is a polyhedral cone with a base given by a product of simplices. Our proof makes use of a new characterization of products of simplices up to affine equivalence that we believe is of independent interest.

Prescribed graphon symmetries and flavors of rigidity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that an arbitrary compact metrizable group can be realized as the automorphism group of a graphing; this is a continuous analogue to Frucht's theorem recovering arbitrary finite groups are automorphism groups of finite graphs. The paper also contains a number of results the persistence of transitivity of a compact-group action upon passing to a limit of graphons. Call a compact group $\mathbb{G}$ graphon-rigid if, whenever it acts transitively on each member $Γ_n$ of a convergent sequence of graphons, it also acts transitively on the limit $\lim_n Γ$. We show that for a compact Lie group $\mathbb{G}$ graphon rigidity is equivalent to the identity component $\mathbb{G}_0$ being semisimple; as a partial converse to a result of Lovász and Szegedy, this is also equivalent to weak randomness: the property that the group have only finitely many irreducible representations in each dimension. Similarly, call a compact group $\mathbb{G}$ image-rigid if for every compact Lie group $\mathbb{H}$ the images of morphisms $\mathbb{G}\to \mathbb{H}$ form a closed set (of closed subgroups, in the natural topology). We prove that graphon rigidity implies image rigidity for compact groups that are either connected or profinite, and the two conditions are equivalent (and also equivalent to being torsion) for profinite abelian groups.
Combinatorics and preservation of conically stable polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a closed, convex cone $K\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, a multivariate polynomial $f\in\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{z}]$ is called $K$-stable if the imaginary parts of its roots are not contained in the relative interior of $K$. If $K$ is the non-negative orthant, $K$-stability specializes to the usual notion of stability of polynomials. We develop generalizations of preservation operations and of combinatorial criteria from usual stability towards conic stability. A particular focus is on the cone of positive semidefinite matrices (psd-stability). In particular, we prove the preservation of psd-stability under a natural generalization of the inversion operator. Moreover, we give conditions on the support of psd-stable polynomials and characterize the support of special families of psd-stable polynomials.

On the logical strength of the better quasi order with three elements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of better quasi order ($\mathsf{BQO}$), due to Nash-Williams, is very fruitful mathematically and intriguing from the standpoint of logic, due to several long-standing open problems. In the present paper, we make a significant step towards one of these: Let $\mathbf 3$ be the discrete order with three elements. We show that arithmetical recursion along the natural numbers ($\mathsf{ACA}_0^+$) follows from $\mathbf 3$ being $\mathsf{BQO}$, over the base theory $\mathsf{RCA_0}$ from reverse mathematics. Also over the latter, we deduce arithmetical transfinite recursion ($\mathsf{ATR}_0$) from the assumption that $\mathbf 3$ is $Δ^0_2\text{-}\mathsf{BQO}$, which plays a role in work of Montalbán.

Random partitions under the Plancherel-Hurwitz measure, high genus Hurwitz numbers and maps
Published in Ann. Probab. 52 (4), 1253-1359, (July 2024) • View Publication • BIB
We study the asymptotic behaviour of random integer partitions under a new probability law that we introduce, the Plancherel-Hurwitz measure. This distribution, which has a natural definition in terms of Young tableaux, is a deformation of the classical Plancherel measure which appears naturally in the context of Hurwitz numbers, enumerating certain transposition factorisations in symmetric groups. We study a regime in which the number of factors in the underlying factorisations grows linearly with the order of the group, and the corresponding topological objects, Hurwitz maps, are of high genus. We prove that the limiting behaviour exhibits a new, twofold, phenomenon: the first part becomes very large, while the rest of the partition has the standard Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limit shape. As a consequence, we obtain asymptotic estimates for unconnected Hurwitz numbers with linear Euler characteristic, which we use to study random Hurwitz maps in this regime. This result can also be interpreted as the return probability of the transposition random walk on the symmetric group after linearly many steps.

Oddomorphisms and homomorphism indistinguishability over graphs of bounded degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce (weak) oddomorphisms of graphs which are homomorphisms with additional constraints based on parity. These maps turn out to have interesting properties (e.g., they preserve planarity), particularly in relation to homomorphism indistinguishability. Graphs $G$ and $H$ are *homomorphism indistinguishable* over a family $\mathcal{F}$ if $\hom(F,G) = \hom(F,H)$ for all $F \in \mathcal{F}$, where $\hom(F,G)$ is the number of homomorphisms from $F$ to $G$. A classical result of Lovász says that isomorphism is equivalent to homomorphism indistinguishability over the class of all graphs. In recent years it has been shown that many homomorphism indistinguishability relations have natural algebraic and/or logical formulations. Currently, much research in this area is focused on finding such reformulations. We aim to broaden the scope of current research on homomorphism indistinguishability by introducing new concepts/constructions and proposing several conjectures/questions. In particular, we conjecture that every family closed under disjoint unions and minors gives rise to a distinct homomorphism indistinguishability relation. We also show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of graphs closed under disjoint unions, restrictions to connected components, and weak oddomorphisms, then $\mathcal{F}$ satisfies a certain maximality or closure property: homomorphism indistinguishability over $\mathcal{F}$ of $G$ and $H$ does not imply $\hom(F,G) = \hom(F,H)$ for any $F \notin \mathcal{F}$. This allows us to answer a question raised over ten years ago, showing that homomorphism indistinguishability over graphs of bounded degree is not equivalent to isomorphism.

Subsets of Virtually Nilpotent Groups with the SBM Property
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend Leth's notion of subsets of the integers satisfying the Standard interval measure (SIM) property to the class of virtually nilpotent groups and name the corresponding property the Standard ball measure (SBM) property. In order to do this, we define a natural measure on closed balls in asymptotic cones associated to such groups and show that this measure satisfies the Lebesgue density theorem. We then prove analogs of various properties known to hold for SIM sets in this broader context, occasionally assuming extra properties of the group, such as the small spheres property and the small gaps property.

On the Number of Regions of Piecewise Linear Neural Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many feedforward neural networks (NNs) generate continuous and piecewise-linear (CPWL) mappings. Specifically, they partition the input domain into regions on which the mapping is affine. The number of these so-called linear regions offers a natural metric to characterize the expressiveness of CPWL NNs. The precise determination of this quantity is often out of reach in practice, and bounds have been proposed for specific architectures, including for ReLU and Maxout NNs. In this work, we generalize these bounds to NNs with arbitrary and possibly multivariate CPWL activation functions. We first provide upper and lower bounds on the maximal number of linear regions of a CPWL NN given its depth, width, and the number of linear regions of its activation functions. Our results rely on the combinatorial structure of convex partitions and confirm the distinctive role of depth which, on its own, is able to exponentially increase the number of regions. We then introduce a complementary stochastic framework to estimate the average number of linear regions produced by a CPWL NN. Under reasonable assumptions, the expected density of linear regions along any 1D path is bounded by the product of depth, width, and a measure of activation complexity (up to a scaling factor). This yields an identical role to the three sources of expressiveness: no exponential growth with depth is observed anymore.
Spectral large deviations of sparse random matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Eigenvalues of Wigner matrices has been a major topic of investigation. A particularly important subclass of such random matrices is formed by the adjacency matrix of an Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ equipped with i.i.d. edge-weights. An observable of particular interest is the largest eigenvalue. In this paper, we study the large deviations behavior of the largest eigenvalue of such matrices, a topic that has received considerable attention over the years. We focus on the case $p = \frac{d}{n}$, where most known techniques break down. So far, results were known only for $\mathcal{G}_{n,\frac{d}{n}}$ without edge-weights (Krivelevich and Sudakov, '03), (Bhattacharya, Bhattacharya, and Ganguly, '21) and with Gaussian edge-weights (Ganguly and Nam, '21). In the present article, we consider the effect of general weight distributions. More specifically, we consider the entries whose tail probabilities decay at rate $e^{-t^α}$ with $α>0$, where the regimes $0<α<2$ and $α>2$ correspond to tails heavier and lighter than the Gaussian tail respectively. While in many natural settings the large deviations behavior is expected to depend crucially on the entry distribution, we establish a surprising and rare universal behavior showing that this is not the case when $α> 2.$ In contrast, in the $α< 2$ case, the large deviation rate function is no longer universal and is given by the solution to a variational problem, the description of which involves a generalization of the Motzkin-Straus theorem, a classical result from spectral graph theory. As a byproduct of our large deviation results, we also establish new law of large numbers results for the largest eigenvalue. In particular, we show that the typical value of the largest eigenvalue exhibits a phase transition at $α= 2$, i.e. the Gaussian distribution.

On two notions of total positivity for partial flag varieties
Published in Adv. Math. 414 (2023), Paper No. 108855, 24 pages • View Publication • BIB
Given integers $1 \le k_1 < \cdots < k_l \le n-1$, let $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}$ denote the type $A$ partial flag variety consisting of all chains of subspaces $(V_{k_1}\subset\cdots\subset V_{k_l})$ inside $\mathbb{R}^n$, where each $V_k$ has dimension $k$. Lusztig (1994, 1998) introduced the totally positive part $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{>0}$ as the subset of partial flags which can be represented by a totally positive $n\times n$ matrix, and defined the totally nonnegative part $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{\ge 0}$ as the closure of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{>0}$. On the other hand, following Postnikov (2007), we define $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{Δ>0}$ and $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{Δ\ge 0}$ as the subsets of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}$ where all Plücker coordinates are positive and nonnegative, respectively. It follows from the definitions that Lusztig's total positivity implies Plücker positivity, and it is natural to ask when these two notions of positivity agree. Rietsch (2009) proved that they agree in the case of the Grassmannian $\text{Fl}_{k;n}$, and Chevalier (2011) showed that the two notions are distinct for $\text{Fl}_{1,3;4}$. We show that in general, the two notions agree if and only if $k_1, \dots, k_l$ are consecutive integers. We give an elementary proof of this result (including for the case of Grassmannians) based on classical results in linear algebra and the theory of total positivity. We also show that the cell decomposition of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{\ge 0}$ coincides with its matroid decomposition if and only if $k_1,\dots,k_l$ are consecutive integers, which was previously only known for complete flag varieties, Grassmannians, and $\text{Fl}_{1,3;4}$. Finally, we determine which notions of positivity are compatible with a natural action of the cyclic group of order $n$ that rotates the index set.

A bijection between Tamari intervals and extended fighting fish
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce extended fighting fish as branching surfaces that can also be seen as walks in the quarter plane defined by simple rewriting rules. The main result we present in the article is a direct bijection between extended fighting fish and intervals of the Tamari lattice that exchanges multiple natural statistics. The model includes the recently introduced fighting fish of (Duchi, Guerrini, Rinaldi, Schaeffer 2017) that were shown to be equinumerated with synchronized Tamari intervals. Using the dual surface/walk points of view on extended fighting fish, we show that the area statistics on these fish corresponds to the distance statistics (or maximal length of a chain) in Tamari invervals. We also show that the average area of a uniform random extended fighting fish of size $n$, and hence the average distance over the set of Tamari intervals of size $n$, is of order $n^{5/4}$, in accordance with earlier result for the subclass fighting fish.
