On the restricted size Ramsey number for a pair of cycles
For graphs $H_1,H_2$ by $r^*(H_1,H_2)$ we denote the minimum number of edges in a graph $G$ on $r(H_1,H_2)$ vertices such that $G\to (H_1,H_2)$. We show that for each pair of natural numbers $k,n$, $k\le n$, where $k$ is odd and $n$ is large enough, we have $$r^*(C_n,C_k)=\lceil (n+1)(2n-1)/2\rceil \,.$$
Generalized chromatic functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of P-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of P-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of r-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

A further extension of Rödl's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix $\varepsilon>0$ and a nonnull graph $H$. A well-known theorem of Rödl from the 80s says that every graph $G$ with no induced copy of $H$ contains a linear-sized $\varepsilon$-restricted set $S\subseteq V(G)$, which means $S$ induces a subgraph with maximum degree at most $\varepsilon\vert S\vert$ in $G$ or its complement. There are two extensions of this result: $\bullet$ quantitatively, Nikiforov (and later Fox and Sudakov) relaxed the condition "no induced copy of $H$" into "at most $κ\vert G\vert^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ for some $κ>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$"; and $\bullet$ qualitatively, Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl recently showed that there exists $N>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$ such that $G$ is $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted, which means $V(G)$ has a partition into at most $N$ subsets that are $\varepsilon$-restricted. A natural common generalization of these two asserts that every graph $G$ with at most $κ\vert G\vert^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ is $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted for some $κ,N>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$. This is unfortunately false, but we prove that for every $\varepsilon>0$, $κ$ and $N$ still exist so that for every $d\ge0$, every graph with at most $κd^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ has an $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted induced subgraph on at least $\vert G\vert-d$ vertices. This unifies the two aforementioned theorems, and is optimal up to $κ$ and $N$ for every value of $d$.

Interlacing, integrals of Hurwitz series and differential equations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we first introduce the unlacing of Hurwitz series, which can be viewed as an inverse of interlacing, and develop the basic properties of unlacing, interlacing and integral of Hurwitz series. We then show that the multiplication of interlacing of Hurwitz series by basis elements can be also rewritten as an interlacing, and provide the explicit multiplication formula in terms of integrals and Hadamard products. Finally, we investigate the natural exponential function $\exp$, and realize the method of reduction of order in the ring of Hurwitz series by using $\exp$.
A geometric construction of isospectral magnetic graphs
Published in Analysis and Mathematical Physics 13 (2023) article number 64 • View Publication • BIB
We present a geometrical construction of families of finite isospectral graphs labelled by different partitions of a natural number $r$ of given length $s$ (the number of summands). Isospectrality here refers to the discrete magnetic Laplacian with normalised weights (including standard weights). The construction begins with an arbitrary finite graph $G$ with normalised weight and magnetic potential as a building block from which we construct, in a first step, a family of so-called frame graphs $(F_a)_{a \in \mathbb{N}}$. A frame graph $F_a$ is constructed contracting $a$ copies of $G$ along a subset of vertices $V_0$. In a second step, for any partition $A=(a_1,\dots,a_s)$ of length $s$ of a natural number $r$ (i.e., $r=a_1+\dots+a_s$) we construct a new graph $F_A$ contracting now the frames $F_{a_1},\dots,F_{a_s}$ selected by $A$ along a proper subset of vertices $V_1\subset V_0$. All the graphs obtained by different $s$-partitions of $r\geq 4$ (for any choice of $V_0$ and $V_1$) are isospectral and non-isomorphic. In particular, we obtain increasing finite families of graphs which are isospectral for given $r$ and $s$ for different types of magnetic Laplacians including the standard Laplacian, the signless standard Laplacian, certain kinds of signed Laplacians and, also, for the (unbounded) Kirchhoff Laplacian of the underlying equilateral metric graph. The spectrum of the isospectral graphs is determined by the spectrum of the Laplacian of the building block $G$ and the spectrum for the Laplacian with Dirichlet conditions on the set of vertices $V_0$ and $V_1$ with multiplicities determined by the numbers $r$ and $s$ of the partition.

Geometry of higher rank valuations
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k. We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions. We consider moreover a refined notion of tropicalization in which we remember the initial terms of power series on each cone of a dual complex, and prove a tropical analogue of the weak approximation theorem in number theory by showing that any compatible collection of initial terms on cones of a dual cone complex is the refined tropicalization of a rational function in the function field of the variety. Endowing the value group R^k with its Euclidean topology, we study then a natural topology on spaces of higher rank valuations that we call the tropical topology. By using the approximation theorem we provide an explicit description of the tropical topology on tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Finally, we show that tangent cones of dual complexes provide a notion of skeleton in higher rank non-archimedean geometry. That is, generalizing the picture in rank one to higher rank, we construct retraction maps to tangent cones of dual cone complexes, and use them to obtain limit formulae in which we reconstruct higher rank non-archimedian spaces with their tropical topology as the projective limit of their higher rank skeleta. We conjecture that these higher rank skeleta provide appropriate bases for the study of variations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

The partial Temperley-Lieb algebra and its representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial description of a new diagram algebra, the partial Temperley--Lieb algebra, arising as the generic centralizer algebra $\mathrm{End}_{\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)}(V^{\otimes k})$, where $V = V(0) \oplus V(1)$ is the direct sum of the trivial and natural module for the quantized enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)$. It is a proper subalgebra of the Motzkin algebra (the $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-centralizer) of Benkart and Halverson. We prove a version of Schur--Weyl duality for the new algebras, and describe their generic representation theory.
A new generalization of the minimal excludant arising from an analogue of Franklin's identity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Euler's classical identity states that the number of partitions of an integer into odd parts and distinct parts are equinumerous. Franklin gave a generalization by considering partitions with exactly $j$ different multiples of $r$, for a positive integer $r$. We prove an analogue of Franklin's identity by studying the number of partitions with $j$ multiples of $r$ in total and in the process, discover a natural generalization of the minimal excludant (mex) which we call the $r$-chain mex. Further, we derive the generating function for $σ_{rc} \textup{mex}(n)$, the sum of $r$-chain mex taken over all partitions of $n$, thereby deducing a combinatorial identity for $σ_{rc} \textup{mex}(n)$, which neatly generalizes the result of Andrews and Newman for $σ\textup{mex}(n)$, the sum of mex over all partitions of $n$.

On adjacency operators of locally finite graphs

A graph $Γ$ is called locally finite if, for each vertex $v$ of $Γ$, the set $Γ(v)$ of all neighbors of $v$ in $Γ$ is finite. For any locally finite graph $Γ$ with vertex set $V(Γ)$ and for any field $F$, let $F^{V(Γ)}$ be the vector space over $F$ of all functions $V(Γ) \to F$ (with natural componentwise operations) and let $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ be the linear operator $F^{V(Γ)} \to F^{V(Γ)}$ defined by $(A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}(f))(v) = \sum_{u \in Γ(v)}f(u)$ for all $f \in F^{V(Γ)}$, $v \in V(Γ)$. In the case of finite graph $Γ$ the mapping $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ is the well known operator defined by the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ (over $F$), and the theory of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of such operator is a well-developed (at least in the case $F = \mathbb{C}$) part of the theory of finite graphs. In this paper we develope a theory of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ for arbitrary infinite locally finite graphs $Γ$ (although a few results may be of interest for finite graphs) and fields $F$ with a special emphasis on the case when $Γ$ is connected with uniformly bounded vertex degrees and $F = \mathbb{C}$. By the author opinion, previous attempts in this direction were not quite satisfactory since were limited by consideration of rather special eigenfunctions and corresponding eigenvalues.
Common Pairs of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $H$ is said to be common if the number of monochromatic labelled copies of $H$ in a red/blue edge colouring of a large complete graph is asymptotically minimized by a random colouring with an equal proportion of each colour. We extend this notion to an asymmetric setting. That is, we define a pair $(H_1,H_2)$ of graphs to be $(p,1-p)$-common if a particular linear combination of the density of $H_1$ in red and $H_2$ in blue is asymptotically minimized by a random colouring in which each edge is coloured red with probability $p$ and blue with probability $1-p$. We extend many of the results on common graphs to this asymmetric setting. In addition, we obtain several novel results for common pairs of graphs with no natural analogue in the symmetric setting. We also obtain new examples of common graphs in the classical sense and propose several open problems.

A solution to Babai's problem on digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
The fact that the adjacency matrix of every finite graph is diagonalizable plays a fundamental role in spectral graph theory. Since this fact does not hold in general for digraphs, it is natural to ask whether it holds for digraphs with certain level of symmetry. Interest on this question dates back to early 1980s, when P.~J.~Cameron asked for the existence of arc-transitive digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix. This was answered in the affirmative by L.~Babai in 1985. Then Babai posed the open problem of constructing a 2-arc-transitive digraph and a vertex-primitive digraph whose adjacency matrices are not diagonalizable. In this paper, we solve Babai's problem by constructing an infinite family of $s$-arc-transitive digraphs for each integer $s\geq2$, and an infinite family of vertex-primitive digraphs, respectively, both of whose adjacency matrices are non-diagonalizable.

Multicolor Turán numbers II -- a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem and new results on cliques and odd cycles
In this paper we continue the study of a natural generalization of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. Let $ex_F(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed simple graph $F$ that can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. The case when both $F$ and $G$ are triangles essentially gives back the theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. We extend their results to the case when $F$ and $G$ are arbitrary cliques by applying a number theoretic result due to Erdős, Frankl and Rödl. This extension in turn decides the order of magnitude for a large family of graph pairs, which will be subquadratic, but almost quadratic. Since the linear $r$-uniform hypergraph Turán problems to determine $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)$ form a class of the multicolor Turán problem, following the identity $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)=ex_{K_r}(n,G)$, our results determine the linear hypergraph Turán numbers of every graph of girth $3$ and for every $r$ up to a subpolynomial factor. Furthermore, when $G$ is a triangle, we settle the case $F=C_5$ and give bounds for the cases $F=C_{2k+1}$, $k\ge 3$ as well.

Extremal and monotone behaviour of the Sudoku number and related critical set parameters
The Sudoku number has been defined under various names, indicating it is a natural concept. There are four variants of this parameter, that can be related to the maximum and minimum size of a critical set in a graph colouring problem. For each of these four related parameters, we present some simple characterizations of the graphs attaining the maximum possible values. As a main result, we answer a question by Cooper and Kirkpatrick, showing that there is monotone behaviour in the number of colours for only two of the four parameters. We investigate the monotone behaviour for the subgraph-order as well. For Latin squares and the Sudoku, we solve some variants for hypergraph colouring.

Searching for Regularity in Bounded Functions
Given a function $f$ on $\mathbb{F}_2^n$, we study the following problem. What is the largest affine subspace $\mathcal{U}$ such that when restricted to $\mathcal{U}$, all the non-trivial Fourier coefficients of $f$ are very small? For the natural class of bounded Fourier degree $d$ functions $f:\mathbb{F}_2^n \to [-1,1]$, we show that there exists an affine subspace of dimension at least $ \tildeΩ(n^{1/d!}k^{-2})$, wherein all of $f$'s nontrivial Fourier coefficients become smaller than $ 2^{-k}$. To complement this result, we show the existence of degree $d$ functions with coefficients larger than $2^{-d\log n}$ when restricted to any affine subspace of dimension larger than $Ω(dn^{1/(d-1)})$. In addition, we give explicit examples of functions with analogous but weaker properties. Along the way, we provide multiple characterizations of the Fourier coefficients of functions restricted to subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ that may be useful in other contexts. Finally, we highlight applications and connections of our results to parity kill number and affine dispersers.

Exact Counts of $C_{4}$s in Blow-Up Graphs
Cycles have many interesting properties and are widely studied in many disciplines. In some areas, maximising the counts of $k$-cycles are of particular interest. A natural candidate for the construction method used to maximise the number of subgraphs $H$ in a graph $G$, is the \emph{blow-up} method. Take a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and a pattern graph $H$ on $k$ vertices, such that $n\geq k$, the blow-up method involves an iterative process of replacing vertices in $G$ with a copy of the $k$-vertex graph $H$. In this paper, we apply the blow-up method on the family of cycles. We then present the exact counts of cycles of length 4 for using this blow-up method on cycles and generalised theta graphs.

Underlying Flag Polymatroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.

Monochromatic exponential triples: an ultrafilter proof
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a short ultrafilter proof of the existence of monochromatic exponential triples $\{a, b, b^a\}$ in any finite coloring of the natural numbers. The proof is given from scratch and uses only Ramsey's theorem, the notion of asymptotic density and the definition of ultrafilter as prerequisites. We then generalize the construction using a special ultrafilter whose existence is well known in the algebra of ultrafilters, and prove a new result on the existence of infinite monochromatic exponential patterns.

Quivers and path semigroups characterized by locality conditions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of locality semigroups was recently introduced with motivation from locality in convex geometry and quantum field theory. We show that there is a natural correspondence between locality sets and quivers which leads to a concrete class of locality semigroups given by the paths of quivers. Further these path semigroups from paths are precisely the free objects in the category of locality semigroups with a rigid condition. This characterization gives a universal property of path algebras and at the same time a combinatorial realization of free rigid locality semigroups.

Sumsets of sequences in abelian groups and flags in field extensions
For a finite abelian group $G$ with subsets $A$ and $B$, the sumset $AB$ is $\{ab \mid a\in A, b \in B\}$. A fundamental problem in additive combinatorics is to find a lower bound for the cardinality of $AB$ in terms of the cardinalities of $A$ and $B$. This article addresses the analogous problem for sequences in abelian groups and flags in field extensions. For a positive integer $n$, let $[n]$ denote the set $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$. To a finite abelian group $G$ of cardinality $n$ and an ordering $G = \{1=v_0,\dots,v_{n-1}\}$, associate the function $T \colon [n] \times [n] \rightarrow [n]$ defined by \[ T(i,j) = \min\big\{k \in [n] \mid \{v_0,\dots,v_i\}\{v_0,\dots,v_j\} \subseteq \{v_0,\dots,v_k\}\big\}. \] Under the natural partial ordering, what functions $T$ are minimal as $\{1=v_0,\dots,v_{n-1}\}$ ranges across orderings of finite abelian groups of cardinality $n$? We also ask the analogous question for degree $n$ field extensions. We explicitly classify all minimal $T$ when $n < 18$, $n$ is a prime power, or $n$ is a product of $2$ distinct primes. When $n$ is not as above, we explicitly construct orderings of abelian groups whose associated function $T$ is not contained in the above classification. We also associate to orderings a polyhedron encoding the data of $T$.

Regressive versions of Hindman's Theorem
Published in Arch. Math. Logic 63, 447-472 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
When the Canonical Ramsey's Theorem by Erdős and Rado is applied to regressive functions one obtains the Regressive Ramsey's Theorem by Kanamori and McAloon. Taylor proved a "canonical" version of Hindman's Theorem, analogous to the Canonical Ramsey's Theorem. We introduce the restriction of Taylor's Canonical Hindman's Theorem to a subclass of the regressive functions, the $λ$-regressive functions, relative to an adequate version of min-homogeneity and prove some results about the Reverse Mathematics of this Regressive Hindman's Theorem and of natural restrictions of it. In particular we prove that the first non-trivial restriction of the principle is equivalent to Arithmetical Comprehension. We furthermore prove that this same principle strongly computably reduces the well-ordering-preservation principle for base-$ω$ exponentiation.
