On generalized Schur groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $S$-ring (Schur ring) is called central if it is contained in the center of the group ring. We introduce the notion of a generalized Schur group, i.e. such finite group that all central $S$-rings over this group are schurian. It generalizes in a natural way the notion of a Schur group and they are equivalent for abelian groups. We establish basic properties and provide infinite families of nonabelian generalized Schur groups

On groups with chordal power graph, including a classification in the case of finite simple groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove various properties on the structure of groups whose power graph is chordal. Nilpotent groups with this property have been classified by Manna, Cameron and Mehatari [The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2021]. Here we classify the finite simple groups with chordal power graph, relative to typical number theoretic oracles. We do so by devising several sufficient conditions for the existence and non-existence of long cycles in power graphs of finite groups. We examine other natural group classes, including special linear, symmetric, generalized dihedral and quaternion groups, and we characterize direct products with chordal power graph. The classification problem is thereby reduced to directly indecomposable groups and we further obtain a list of possible socles. Lastly, we give a general bound on the length of an induced path in chordal power graphs, providing another potential road to advance the classification beyond simple groups.

Generalizing Körner's graph entropy to graphons
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 114, December 2023, 103779 • View Publication • BIB
Körner introduced the notion of graph entropy in 1973 as the minimal code rate of a natural coding problem where not all pairs of letters can be distinguished in the alphabet. Later it turned out that it can be expressed as the solution of a minimization problem over the so-called vertex-packing polytope. In this paper we generalize this notion to graphons. We show that the analogous minimization problem provides an upper bound for graphon entropy. We also give a lower bound in the shape of a maximization problem. The main result of the paper is that for most graphons these two bounds actually coincide and hence precisely determine the entropy in question. Furthermore, graphon entropy has a nice connection to the fractional chromatic number and the fractional clique number.
Minimum Flow Decomposition in Graphs with Cycles using Integer Linear Programming
Published • View Publication • BIB
Minimum flow decomposition (MFD) -- the problem of finding a minimum set of weighted source-to-sink paths that perfectly decomposes a flow -- is a classical problem in Computer Science, and variants of it are powerful models in different fields such as Bioinformatics and Transportation. Even on acyclic graphs, the problem is NP-hard, and most practical solutions have been via heuristics or approximations. While there is an extensive body of research on acyclic graphs, currently, there is no \emph{exact} solution on graphs with cycles. In this paper, we present the first ILP formulation for three natural variants of the MFD problem in graphs with cycles, asking for a decomposition consisting only of weighted source-to-sink paths or cycles, trails, and walks, respectively. On three datasets of increasing levels of complexity from both Bioinformatics and Transportation, our approaches solve any instance in under 10 minutes. Our implementations are freely available at github.com/algbio/MFD-ILP.
Hurwitz numbers for reflection groups II: Parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements
Published in Journal of Algebra, vol. 641 (2024), pp. 648-715 • View Publication • BIB
We define parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements in well generated complex reflection groups. We characterize them in multiple natural ways, and we study two combinatorial objects associated with them: the collections $\operatorname{Red}_W(g)$ of reduced reflection factorizations of $g$ and $\operatorname{RGS}(W,g)$ of the relative generating sets of $g$. We compute the cardinalities of these sets for large families of parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements and, in particular, we relate the size $\#\operatorname{Red}_W(g)$ with geometric invariants of Frobenius manifolds. This paper is second in a series of three; we will rely on many of its results in part III to prove uniform formulas that enumerate full reflection factorizations of parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements, generalizing the genus-$0$ Hurwitz numbers.

More on lines in Euclidean Ramsey theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\ell_m$ be a sequence of $m$ points on a line with consecutive points at distance one. Answering a question raised by Fox and the first author and independently by Arman and Tsaturian, we show that there is a natural number $m$ and a red/blue-colouring of $\mathbb{E}^n$ for every $n$ that contains no red copy of $\ell_3$ and no blue copy of $\ell_m$.

Regular projections of the link L6n1
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a link projection $P$ and a link $L$, it is natural to ask whether it is possible that $P$ is a projection of $L$. Taniyama answered this question for the cases in which $L$ is a prime knot or link with crossing number at most five. Recently, Takimura settled the issue for the knot $6_2$. We answer this question for the case in which $L$ is the link $L6n1$.
Geodesic Growth of Numbered Graph Products
Published in journal of Groups, complexity, cryptology, Volume 14, Issue 2 (February 4, 2023) gcc:10019 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study geodesic growth of numbered graph products; these are a generalization of right-angled Coxeter groups, defined as graph products of finite cyclic groups. We first define a graph-theoretic condition called link-regularity, as well as a natural equivalence amongst link-regular numbered graphs, and show that numbered graph products associated to link-regular numbered graphs must have the same geodesic growth series. Next, we derive a formula for the geodesic growth of right-angled Coxeter groups associated to link-regular graphs. Finally, we find a system of equations that can be used to solve for the geodesic growth of numbered graph products corresponding to link-regular numbered graphs that contain no triangles and have constant vertex numbering.

On the main distance-based entropies: the eccentricity- and Wiener-entropy
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define the Wiener-entropy, which is together with the eccentricity-entropy one of the most natural distance-based graph entropies. By deriving the (asymptotic) extremal behaviour, we conclude that the Wiener-entropy of graphs of a given order is more spread than is the case for the eccentricity-entropy. We solve $3$ conjectures on the eccentricity-entropy and give a conjecture on the Wiener-entropy related to some surprising behaviour on the graph minimizing it.

Birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties and the generalized Shareshian-Wachs conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce generalized Hessenberg varieties and establish basic facts. We show that the Tymoczko action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties extends to generalized Hessenberg varieties and that natural morphisms among them preserve the action. By analyzing natural morphisms and birational maps among generalized Hessenberg varieties, we give an elementary proof of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture. Moreover we present a natural generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture that involves generalized Hessenberg varieties and provide an elementary proof. As a byproduct, we propose a generalized Stanley-Stembridge conjecture for weighted graphs. Our investigation into the birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties enables us to modify them into much simpler varieties like projective spaces or permutohedral varieties by explicit sequences of blowups or projective bundle maps. Using this, we provide two algorithms to compute the $S_n$-representations on the cohomology of generalized Hessenberg varieties. As an application, we compute representations on the low degree cohomology of some Hessenberg varieties.

Totally non-negativity of a family of change-of-basis matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let ${\bf a}=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ and ${\bf e}=(e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_n)$ be real sequences. Denote by $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ the $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrix whose $(m,k)$ entry ($m, k \in \{0,\ldots, n\}$) is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. By appropriate choice of ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$ the matrix $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ can encode many familiar doubly-indexed combinatorial sequences, such as binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, Lah numbers and central factorial numbers. In all four of these examples, $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ enjoys the property of total non-negativity -- the determinants of all its square submatrices are non-negative. This leads to a natural question: when, in general, is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ totally non-negative? Galvin and Pacurar found a simple condition on ${\bf e}$ that characterizes total non-negativity of $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ when ${\bf a}$ is non-decreasing. Here we fully extend this result. For arbitrary real sequences ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf e}$, we give a condition that can be checked in $O(n^2)$ time that determines whether $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative. When $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$ is totally non-negative, we witness this with a planar network whose weights are non-negative and whose path matrix is $M_{{\bf e}\rightarrow {\bf a}}$. When it is not, we witness this with an explicit negative minor.

Distribution of similar configurations in subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q^d$
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 346, Issue 10, October 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$ and $E$ be a set in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. The distance set of $E$ is defined by $Δ(E):=\{\lVert x-y \rVert :x,y\in E\}$, where $\lVert α\rVert=α_1^2+\dots+α_d^2$. Iosevich, Koh and Parshall (2018) proved that if $d\geq 2$ is even and $|E|\geq 9q^{d/2}$, then $$\mathbb{F}_q= \frac{Δ(E)}{Δ(E)}=\left\{\frac{a}{b}: a\in Δ(E),\ b\in Δ(E)\setminus\{0\} \right\}.$$ In other words, for each $r\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ there exist $(x,y)\in E^2$ and $(x',y')\in E^2$ such that $\lVert x-y\rVert\neq0$ and $\lVert x'-y' \rVert=r\lVert x-y\rVert$. Geometrically, this means that if the size of $E$ is large, then for any given $r \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ we can find a pair of edges in the complete graph $K_{|E|}$ with vertex set $E$ such that one of them is dilated by $r\in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ with respect to the other. A natural question arises whether it is possible to generalize this result to arbitrary subgraphs of $K_{|E|}$ with vertex set $E$ and this is the goal of this paper. In this paper, we solve this problem for $k$-paths $(k\geq 2)$, simplexes and 4-cycles. We are using a mix of tools from different areas such as enumerative combinatorics, group actions and Turán type theorems.

An involution on restricted Laguerre histories and its applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Laguerre histories (restricted or not) are certain weighted Motzkin paths with two types of level steps. They are, on one hand, in natural bijection with the set of permutations, and on the other hand, yield combinatorial interpretations for the moments of Laguerre polynomials via Flajolet's combinatorial theory of continued fractions. In this paper, we first introduce a reflection-like involution on restricted Laguerre histories. Then, we demonstrate its power by composing this involution with three bijections due to Fran\ccon-Viennot, Foata-Zeilberger, and Yan-Zhou-Lin, respectively. A host of equidistribution results involving various (multiset-valued) permutation statistics follow from these applications. As byproducts, seven apparently new Mahonian statistics present themselves; new interpretations of known Mahonian statistics are discovered as well. Finally, in our effort to show the interconnections between these Mahonian statistics, we are naturally led to a new link between the variant Yan-Zhou-Lin bijection and the Kreweras complement.
Discrete diffusion-type equation on regular graphs and its applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive an explicit formula for the fundamental solution $K_{T_{q+1}}(x,x_{0};t)$ to the discrete-time diffusion equation on the $(q+1)$-regular tree $T_{q+1}$ in terms of the discrete $I$-Bessel function. We then use the formula to derive an explicit expression for the fundamental solution $K_{X}(x,x_{0};t)$ to the discrete-time diffusion equation on any $(q+1)$-regular graph $X$. Going further, we develop three applications. The first one is to derive a general trace formula that relates the spectral data on $X$ to its topological data. Though we emphasize the results in the case when $X$ is finite, our method also applies when $X$ has a countably infinite number of vertices. As a second application, we obtain a closed-form expression for the return time probability distribution of the uniform random walk on any $(q+1)$-regular graph. The expression is obtained by relating $K_{X}(x,x_{0};t)$ to the uniform random walk on a $(q+1)$-regular graph. We then show that if $\{X_{h}\}$ is a sequence of $(q+1)$-regular graphs whose number of vertices goes to infinity and which satisfies a certain natural geometric condition, then the limit of the return time probability distributions from $\{X_{h}\}$ is equal to the return time probability distribution on the tree $T_{q+1}$. As a third application, we derive formulas which express the number of distinct closed irreducible walks without tails on a finite graph $X$ in terms of moments of the spectrum of its adjacency matrix.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative $P$-symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a natural unit interval order $P$, we describe proper colorings of the incomparability graph of $P$ in the language of heaps. We also introduce a combinatorial operation, called a \emph{local flip}, on the heaps. This operation defines an equivalence relation on the proper colorings, and the equivalence relation refines the ascent statistic introduced by Shareshian and Wachs. In addition, we define an analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions introduced by Fomin and Greene, with respect to $P$. We establish a duality between the chromatic quasisymmetric function of $P$ and these noncommutative symmetric functions. This duality leads us to positive expansions of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions into several symmetric function bases. In particular, we present some partial results for the $e$-positivity conjecture.
Discrete group actions on 3-manifolds and embeddable Cayley complexes

We prove that a group $Γ$ admits a discrete topological (equivalently, smooth) action on some simply-connected 3-manifold if and only if $Γ$ has a Cayley complex embeddable -- with certain natural restrictions -- in one of the following four 3-manifolds: (i) $\mathbb{S}^3$, (ii) $\mathbb{R}^3$, (iii) $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$, (iv) the complement of a tame Cantor set in $\mathbb{S}^3$.

Chirality for simple graphs of size up to 12
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chirality is one of the important assymmetrical property in wide area of natural science, which has been studied to predict molecular behavior. One of good methods to analyze molecules with complex structures is representing them as graphs embedded in 3-dimensional space. So it is important to study the chirality of spatial graphs to understand structure of chiral molecules. Moreover, Robertson and Seymour's graph minor theorem implies that a set of minor minimal graphs with respect to intrinsic properties is finite. So it is also important to find a complete set of minor minimal graphs for intrinsic properties. In this paper, we classify minor minimal intrinsically chiral graphs among simple graphs of size up to twelve.

On the restricted size Ramsey number for a pair of cycles
For graphs $H_1,H_2$ by $r^*(H_1,H_2)$ we denote the minimum number of edges in a graph $G$ on $r(H_1,H_2)$ vertices such that $G\to (H_1,H_2)$. We show that for each pair of natural numbers $k,n$, $k\le n$, where $k$ is odd and $n$ is large enough, we have $$r^*(C_n,C_k)=\lceil (n+1)(2n-1)/2\rceil \,.$$
Generalized chromatic functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of P-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of P-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of r-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

A further extension of Rödl's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix $\varepsilon>0$ and a nonnull graph $H$. A well-known theorem of Rödl from the 80s says that every graph $G$ with no induced copy of $H$ contains a linear-sized $\varepsilon$-restricted set $S\subseteq V(G)$, which means $S$ induces a subgraph with maximum degree at most $\varepsilon\vert S\vert$ in $G$ or its complement. There are two extensions of this result: $\bullet$ quantitatively, Nikiforov (and later Fox and Sudakov) relaxed the condition "no induced copy of $H$" into "at most $κ\vert G\vert^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ for some $κ>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$"; and $\bullet$ qualitatively, Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl recently showed that there exists $N>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$ such that $G$ is $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted, which means $V(G)$ has a partition into at most $N$ subsets that are $\varepsilon$-restricted. A natural common generalization of these two asserts that every graph $G$ with at most $κ\vert G\vert^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ is $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted for some $κ,N>0$ depending on $H$ and $\varepsilon$. This is unfortunately false, but we prove that for every $\varepsilon>0$, $κ$ and $N$ still exist so that for every $d\ge0$, every graph with at most $κd^{\vert H\vert}$ induced copies of $H$ has an $(N,\varepsilon)$-restricted induced subgraph on at least $\vert G\vert-d$ vertices. This unifies the two aforementioned theorems, and is optimal up to $κ$ and $N$ for every value of $d$.
