Bijections for pairs of non-crossing lattice paths and walks in the plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is a classical result in combinatorics that among lattice paths with 2m steps U=(1,1) and D=(1,-1) starting at the origin, the number of those that do not go below the x-axis equals the number of those that end on the x-axis. A much more unfamiliar fact is that the analogous equality obtained by replacing single paths with k-tuples of non-crossing paths holds for every k. This result has appeared in the literature in different contexts involving plane partitions (where it was proved by Proctor), partially ordered sets, Young tableaux, and lattice walks, but no bijective proof for k>1 seems to be known. In this paper we give a bijective proof of the equality for k=2, showing that for pairs of non-crossing lattice paths with 2m steps U and D, the number of those that do not go below the x-axis equals the number of those that end on the x-axis. Translated in terms of walks in the plane starting at the origin with 2m unit steps in the four coordinate directions, our work provides correspondences among those constrained to the first octant, those constrained to the first quadrant that end on the x-axis, and those in the upper half-plane that end at the origin. Our bijections, which are defined in more generality, also prove new results where different endpoints are allowed, and they give a bijective proof of the formula for the number of walks in the first octant that end on the diagonal, partially answering a question of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna.

Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 5 (2017), e5 • View PublicationBIB
We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.
The numbers of support-tilting modules for a Dynkin algebra
Published in Journal Integer Sequences, vol 18 (2015), Article 15.10.6 • Search Publication
The Dynkin algebras are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The paper exhibits the number of support-tilting modules for any Dynkin algebra. Since the support-tilting modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the non-crossing partitions of the same type, the calculations presented here may also be considered as a categorification of results concerning non-crossing partitions.
Disjoint compatibility graph of non-crossing matchings of points in convex position
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X_{2k}$ be a set of $2k$ labeled points in convex position in the plane. We consider geometric non-intersecting straight-line perfect matchings of $X_{2k}$. Two such matchings, $M$ and $M'$, are disjoint compatible if they do not have common edges, and no edge of $M$ crosses an edge of $M'$. Denote by $\mathrm{DCM}_k$ the graph whose vertices correspond to such matchings, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding matchings are disjoint compatible. We show that for each $k \geq 9$, the connected components of $\mathrm{DCM}_k$ form exactly three isomorphism classes -- namely, there is a certain number of isomorphic small components, a certain number of isomorphic medium components, and one big component. The number and the structure of small and medium components is determined precisely.

Electroid varieties and a compactification of the space of electrical networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a compactification of the space of circular planar electrical networks studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and De Verdiere-Gitler-Vertigan, using cactus networks. We embed this compactification as a linear slice of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, and relate Kenyon and Wilson's grove measurements to Postnikov's boundary measurements. Intersections of the slice with the positroid stratification leads to a class of electroid varieties, indexed by matchings. The partial order on matchings arising from electrical networks is shown to be dual to a subposet of affine Bruhat order. The analogues of matroids in this setting are certain distinguished collections of non-crossing partitions.

Regular matchstick graphs
Published in The American Mathematical Monthly, Vol. 118, Nr. 3 (2011), Pages 264-267 • Search Publication
A graph G=(V,E) is called a unit-distance graph in the plane if there is an injective embedding of V in the plane such that every pair of adjacent vertices are at unit distance apart. If additionally the corresponding edges are non-crossing and all vertices have the same degree r we talk of a regular matchstick graph. Due to Euler's polyhedron formula we have $r\le 5$. The smallest known 4-regular matchstick graph is the so called Harborth graph consisting of 52 vertices. In this article we prove that no finite 5-regular matchstick graph exists and provide a lower bound for the number of vertices of 4-regular matchstick graphs.

Lower bounds on the maximum number of non-crossing acyclic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a contribution to the problem of counting geometric graphs on point sets. More concretely, we look at the maximum numbers of non-crossing spanning trees and forests. We show that the so-called double chain point configuration of N points has Omega(12.52^N) non-crossing spanning trees and Omega(13.61^N) non-crossing forests. This improves the previous lower bounds on the maximum number of non-crossing spanning trees and of non-crossing forests among all sets of N points in general position given by Dumitrescu, Schulz, Sheffer and Tóth. Our analysis relies on the tools of analytic combinatorics, which enable us to count certain families of forests on points in convex position, and to estimate their average number of components. A new upper bound of O(22.12^N) for the number of non-crossing spanning trees of the double chain is also obtained.

A categorification of non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.

Positroids and non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the role that non-crossing partitions play in the study of positroids, a class of matroids introduced by Postnikov. We prove that every positroid can be constructed uniquely by choosing a non-crossing partition on the ground set, and then freely placing the structure of a connected positroid on each of the blocks of the partition. This structural result yields several combinatorial facts about positroids. We show that the face poset of a positroid polytope embeds in a poset of weighted non-crossing partitions. We enumerate connected positroids, and show how they arise naturally in free probability. Finally, we prove that the probability that a positroid on [n] is connected equals 1/e^2 asymptotically.
The number of complete exceptional sequences for a Dynkin algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider Dynkin algebras, these are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The indecomposable modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the positive roots of a Dynkin diagram. Given a Dynkin algebra with n simple modules, a complete exceptional sequence is a sequence M_1,..., M_n of indecomposable modules such that Hom(M_i,M_j) = 0 = Ext(M_i,M_j) for i > j. The aim of this paper is to determine the number of complete exceptional sequences for any Dynkin algebra. There are direct connections between the representation theory of a Dynkin algebra A and the lattice L of non-crossing partitions of the same Dynkin type: As Ingalls and Thomas have shown, the lattice of the thick subcategories of mod A can be identified with L. Hubery and Krause have pointed out that this identification provides a bijection between the complete exceptional sequences for A and the maximal chains in L. Thus, our calculations may also be considered as a categorification of results concerning non-crossing partitions.

The Homomorphism Poset of $K_{3,3}$
A geometric graph \G is a simple graph drawn in the plane, on points in general position, with straight-line edges. We call \G a geometric realization of the underlying abstract graph G. A geometric homomorphism from \G to \H is a vertex map that preserves adjacencies and crossings (but not necessarily non-adjacencies or non-crossings). Geometric homomorphisms can be used to define a partial order on the set of isomorphism classes of geometric realizations of an abstract graph G. In this paper, the homomorphism poset of K_{3,3} is determined.

Geodesics in a Graph of Perfect Matchings
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 74 (2017): B74e • Search Publication
Let $\mathscr{P}_{m}$ be the graph on the set of perfect matchings in the complete graph $K_{2m}$, where two perfect matchings are connected by an edge if their symmetric difference is a cycle of length four. This paper studies geodesics in $\mathscr{P}_{m}$. The diameter of $\mathscr{P}_{m}$, as well as the eccentricity of each vertex, are shown to be $m-1$. Two proof are given to show that the number of geodesics between any two antipodes is $m^{m-2}$. The first is a direct proof via a recursive formula, and the second is via reduction to the number of minimal factorizations of a given $m$-cycle in the symmetric group $S_m$. An explicit formula for the number of geodesics between any two matchings in $\mathscr{P}_{m}$ is also given. Let $\mathscr{M}_m$ be the graph on the set of non-crossing perfect matchings of $2m$ labeled points on a circle with the same adjacency condition as in $\mathscr{P}_m$. $\mathscr{M}_m$ is an induced subgraph of $\mathscr{P}_m$, and it is shown that $\mathscr{M}_m$ has exactly one pair of antipodes having the maximal number ($m^{m-2}$) of geodesics between them.
The Erdős-Szekeres problem for non-crossing convex sets
Published in Mathematika 60 (2014) 463-484 • View PublicationBIB
We show an equivalence between a conjecture of Bisztriczky and Fejes T{ó}th about arrangements of planar convex bodies and a conjecture of Goodman and Pollack about point sets in topological affine planes. As a corollary of this equivalence we improve the upper bound of Pach and Tóth on the Erdős-Szekeres theorem for disjoint convex bodies, as well as the recent upper bound obtained by Fox, Pach, Sudakov and Suk, on the Erdős-Szekeres theorem for non-crossing convex bodies. Our methods also imply improvements on the positive fraction Erd\H{os}-Szekeres theorem for disjoint (and non-crossing) convex bodies, as well as a generalization of the partitioned Erdős-Szekeres theorem of Pór and Valtr to arrangements of non-crossing convex bodies.

Symmetries of statistics on lattice paths between two boundaries
Published in Adv. Math. 287 (2016), 347-388 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that on the set of lattice paths with steps N=(0,1) and E=(1,0) that lie between two fixed boundaries T and B (which are themselves lattice paths), the statistics `number of E steps shared with B' and `number of E steps shared with T' have a symmetric joint distribution. To do so, we give an involution that switches these statistics, preserves additional parameters, and generalizes to paths that contain steps S=(0,-1) at prescribed x-coordinates. We also show that a similar equidistribution result for path statistics follows from the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is independent of the order of its ground set. We extend the two theorems to k-tuples of paths between two boundaries, and we give some applications to Dyck paths, generalizing a result of Deutsch, to watermelon configurations, to pattern-avoiding permutations, and to the generalized Tamari lattice. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Nicolás about the distribution of degrees of k consecutive vertices in k-triangulations of a convex n-gon. To achieve this goal, we provide a new statistic-preserving bijection between certain k-tuples of non-crossing paths and k-flagged semistandard Young tableaux, which is based on local moves reminiscent of jeu de taquin.

The 6-strand braid group is CAT(0)

We show that braid groups with at most 6 strands are CAT(0) using the close connection between these groups, the associated non-crossing partition complexes and the embeddability of their diagonal links into spherical buildings of type A. Furthermore, we prove that the orthoscheme complex of any bounded graded modular complemented lattice is CAT(0), giving a partial answer to a conjecture of Brady and McCammond.

On Multiple Pattern Avoiding Set Partitions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 50(2) (2013), 292-326 • View PublicationBIB
We study classes of set partitions determined by the avoidance of multiple patterns, applying a natural notion of partition containment that has been introduced by Sagan. We say that two sets S and T of patterns are equivalent if for each n, the number of partitions of size n avoiding all the members of S is the same as the number of those that avoid all the members of T. Our goal is to classify the equivalence classes among two-element pattern sets of several general types. First, we focus on pairs of patterns {σ,τ}, where σ is a pattern of size three with at least two distinct symbols and τ is an arbitrary pattern of size k that avoids σ. We show that pattern-pairs of this type determine a small number of equivalence classes; in particular, the classes have on average exponential size in k. We provide a (sub-exponential) upper bound for the number of equivalence classes, and provide an explicit formula for the generating function of all such avoidance classes, showing that in all cases this generating function is rational. Next, we study partitions avoiding a pair of patterns of the form {1212,τ}, where τ is an arbitrary pattern. Note that partitions avoiding 1212 are exactly the non-crossing partitions. We provide several general equivalence criteria for pattern pairs of this type, and show that these criteria account for all the equivalences observed when τ has size at most six. In the last part of the paper, we perform a full classification of the equivalence classes of all the pairs {σ,τ}, where σ and τ have size four.

Crossings in Grid Drawings
We prove crossing number inequalities for geometric graphs whose vertex sets are taken from a d-dimensional grid of volume N and give applications of these inequalities to counting the number of non-crossing geometric graphs that can be drawn on such grids. In particular, we show that any geometric graph with m >= 8N edges and with vertices on a 3D integer grid of volume N, has Ω((m^2/n)\log(m/n)) crossings. In d-dimensions, with d >= 4, this bound becomes Ω(m^2/n). We provide matching upper bounds for all d. Finally, for d >= 4 the upper bound implies that the maximum number of crossing-free geometric graphs with vertices on some d-dimensional grid of volume N is n^Θ(n). In 3 dimensions it remains open to improve the trivial bounds, namely, the 2^Ω(n) lower bound and the n^O(n) upper bound.

k-Divisible random variables in free probability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study the notion of k-divisible elements in a non-commutative probability space. A k-divisible element is a (non-commutative) random variable whose n-th moment vanishes whenever n is not a multiple of k. First, we consider the combinatorial convolution \ast in the lattices NC of non-crossing partitions and NC^k of k-divisible non-crossing partitions and show that convolving k times with the zeta-function in NC is equivalent to convolving once with the zeta-function in NC^k. Furthermore, when x is k-divisible, we derive a formula for the free cumulants of x^k in terms of the free cumulants of x, involving k-divisible non-crossing partitions. Second, we prove that if a and s are free and s is k-divisible then sps and a are free, whenever p is any polynomial (on a and s) of degree k - 2 on s. Moreover, we define a notion of R-diagonal k-tuples and prove similar results. Next, we show that free multiplicative convolution between a measure concentrated in the positive real line and a probability measure with k-symmetry is well defined. Analytic tools to calculate this convolution are developed. Finally, we concentrate on free additive powers of k-symmetric distributions and prove that μt is a well defined probability measure, for all t > 1. We derive central limit theorems and Poisson type ones. More generally, we consider freely infinitely divisible measures and prove that free infinite divisibility is maintained under the mapping μ\rightarrow μ^k . We conclude by focusing on (k-symmetric) free stable distributions, for which we prove a reproducing property generalizing the ones known for one sided and real symmetric free stable laws.

Statistics of blocks in k-divisible non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a formula for the expected number of blocks of a given size from a non-crossing partition chosen uniformly at random. Moreover, we refine this result subject to the restriction of having a number of blocks given. Furthermore, we generalize to k-divisible partitions. In particular, we find that, asymptotically, the expected number of blocks of size t of a k-divisible non-crossing partition of nk elements chosen uniformly at random is (kn+1)/(k+1)^(t+1). Similar results are obtained for type B and type D k-divisible non-crossing partitions of Armstrong.
