Orbifolds and Exact Solutions of Strongly-Coupled Matrix Models
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 361, 1235-1274 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We find an exact solution to strongly-coupled matrix models with a single-trace monomial potential. Our solution yields closed form expressions for the partition function as well as averages of Schur functions. The results are fully factorized into a product of terms linear in the rank of the matrix and the parameters of the model. We extend our formulas to include both logarthmic and finite-difference deformations, thereby generalizing the celebrated Selberg and Kadell integrals. We conjecture a formula for correlators of two Schur functions in these models, and explain how our results follow from a general orbifold-like procedure that can be applied to any one-matrix model with a single-trace potential.

On the restricted partition function II
Let $\mathbf a=(a_1,\ldots,a_r)$ be a vector of positive integers. In continuation of a previous paper we present other formulas for the restricted partition function $p_{\mathbf a}(n): = $ the number of integer solutions $(x_1,\dots,x_r)$ to $\sum_{j=1}^r a_jx_j=n$ with $x_1\geq 0, \ldots, x_r\geq 0$.
Extremes of the internal energy of the Potts model on cubic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove tight upper and lower bounds on the internal energy per particle (expected number of monochromatic edges per vertex) in the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on cubic graphs at every temperature and for all $q \ge 2$. This immediately implies corresponding tight bounds on the anti-ferromagnetic Potts partition function. Taking the zero-temperature limit gives new results in extremal combinatorics: the number of $q$-colorings of a $3$-regular graph, for any $q \ge 2$, is maximized by a union of $K_{3,3}$'s. This proves the $d=3$ case of a conjecture of Galvin and Tetali.

Semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so do the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

A $q$-Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm and a $q$-polymer
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Matveev-Petrov 2016](arXiv:1504.00666) a $q$-deformed Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm ($q$RSK) was introduced. In this article we give reformulations of this algorithm in terms of the Noumi-Yamada description, growth diagrams and local moves. We show that the algorithm is symmetric, namely the output tableaux pairs are swapped in a sense of distribution when the input matrix is transposed. We also formulate a $q$-polymer model based on the $q$RSK, prove the corresponding Burke property, which we use to show a strong law of large numbers for the partition function given stationary boundary conditions and $q$-geometric weights. We use the $q$-local moves to define a generalisation of the $q$RSK taking a Young diagram-shape of array as the input. We write down the joint distribution of partition functions in the space-like direction of the $q$-polymer in $q$-geometric environment, formulate a $q$-version of the multilayer polynuclear growth model ($q$PNG) and write down the joint distribution of the $q$-polymer partition functions at a fixed time.

Rhombic alternative tableaux and assemblées of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the rhombic alternative tableaux, whose weight generating functions provide combinatorial formulae to compute the steady state probabilities of the two-species ASEP. In the ASEP, there are two species of particles, one heavy and one light, hopping right and left on a one-dimensional finite lattice with open boundaries. Parameters $α$, $β$, and $q$ describe the hopping probabilities. The rhombic alternative tableaux are enumerated by the Lah numbers, which also enumerate certain assemblées of permutations. We describe a bijection between the rhombic alternative tableaux and these assemblées. We also provide an insertion algorithm that gives a weight generating function for the assemblées. Combined, these results give a bijective proof for the weight generating function for the rhombic alternative tableaux, which is also the partition function of the two-species ASEP at $q=1$.

Squareness for the Monopole-Dimer model
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, Volume 24, Issue 2 (2020), 237-255 • View PublicationBIB
The monopole-dimer model introduced recently is an exactly-solvable signed generalisation of the dimer model. We show that the partition function of the monopole-dimer model on a graph invariant under a fixed-point free involution is a perfect square. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the square-root of the partition function for such graphs in terms of a monopole-dimer model on a new kind of graph with two types of edges which we call a dicot. The partition function of the latter can be written as a determinant, this time of a complex adjacency matrix. This formulation generalises T. T. Wu's assignment of imaginary orientation for the grid graph to planar dicots. As an application, we compute the partition function for a family of non-planar dicots with positive weights.

Topological recursion on the Bessel curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Witten-Kontsevich theorem states that a certain generating function for intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable curves is a tau-function for the KdV integrable hierarchy. This generating function can be recovered via the topological recursion applied to the Airy curve $x=\frac{1}{2}y^2$. In this paper, we consider the topological recursion applied to the irregular spectral curve $xy^2=\frac{1}{2}$, which we call the Bessel curve. We prove that the associated partition function is also a KdV tau-function, which satisfies Virasoro constraints, a cut-and-join type recursion, and a quantum curve equation. Together, the Airy and Bessel curves govern the local behaviour of all spectral curves with simple branch points.

Combinatorial properties of symmetric polynomials from integrable vertex models in finite lattice
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 58, 091703 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials, we derive several properties of the symmetric polynomials such as the determinant pairing formulas and the branching formulas by analyzing the domain wall boundary partition functions and the matrix elements of the $B$-operators.

Cut-and-join description of generalized Brezin-Gross-Witten model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the Brezin-Gross-Witten model, a tau-function of the KdV hierarchy, and its natural one-parameter deformation, the generalized Brezin-Gross-Witten tau-function. In particular, we derive the Virasoro constraints, which completely specify the partition function. We solve them in terms of the cut-and-join operator. The Virasoro constraints lead to the loop equations, which we solve in terms of the correlation functions. Explicit expressions for the coefficients of the tau-function and the free energy are derived, and a compact formula for the genus zero contribution is conjectured. A family of polynomial solutions of the KdV hierarchy, given by the Schur functions, is obtained for the half-integer values of the parameter. The quantum spectral curve and its classical limit are discussed.

Identities between dimer partition functions on different surfaces
Published in J. Stat. Mech. Theory Exp. (2016), 103101 • View PublicationBIB
Given a weighted graph $G$ embedded in a non-orientable surface $Σ$, one can consider the corresponding weighted graph $\widetilde{G}$ embedded in the so-called orientation cover $\widetildeΣ$ of $Σ$. We prove identities relating twisted partition functions of the dimer model on these two graphs. When $Σ$ is the Möbius strip or the Klein bottle, then $\widetildeΣ$ is the cylinder or the torus, respectively, and under some natural assumptions, these identities imply relations between the genuine dimer partition functions $Z(G)$ and $Z(\widetilde{G})$. For example, we show that if $G$ is a locally but not globally bipartite graph embedded in the Möbius strip, then $Z(\widetilde{G})$ is equal to the square of $Z(G)$. This extends results for the square lattice previously obtained by various authors.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for Grothendieck polynomials from integrability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of double Grothendieck polynomials indexed by Grassmannian permutations. Geometrically, these are the structure constants of the equivariant $K$-theory ring of Grassmannians. Representing the double Grothendieck polynomials as partition functions of an integrable vertex model, we use its Yang-Baxter equation to derive a series of product rules for the former polynomials and their duals. The Littlewood-Richardson coefficients that arise can all be expressed in terms of puzzles without gashes, which generalize previous puzzles obtained by Knutson-Tao and Vakil.

Deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for partition functions and graph polynomials
Published in SIAM J. Comput., 46(6), 1893-1919 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show a new way of constructing deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for computing complex-valued evaluations of a large class of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. In particular, our approach works for the Tutte polynomial and independence polynomial, as well as partition functions of complex-valued spin and edge-coloring models. More specifically, we define a large class of graph polynomials $\mathcal C$ and show that if $p\in \cal C$ and there is a disk $D$ centered at zero in the complex plane such that $p(G)$ does not vanish on $D$ for all bounded degree graphs $G$, then for each $z$ in the interior of $D$ there exists a deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithm for evaluating $p(G)$ at $z$. This gives an explicit connection between absence of zeros of graph polynomials and the existence of efficient approximation algorithms, allowing us to show new relationships between well-known conjectures. Our work builds on a recent line of work initiated by. Barvinok, which provides a new algorithmic approach besides the existing Markov chain Monte Carlo method and the correlation decay method for these types of problems.

Special classes of $q$-bracket operators
Published in Ramanujan Journal 47.2 (2018): 309-316 • View PublicationBIB
We study the $q$-bracket operator of Bloch and Okounkov when applied to $f(λ)=\sum_{λ_i \in λ}g(λ_i)$ and $f(λ)=\sum_{\substack{λ_i \in λλ_i \text{distinct} }}g(λ_i)$. We use these expansions to derive convolution identities for the functions $f$ and link both classes of $q$-brackets through divisor sums. As a result, we generalize Euler's classic convolution identity for the partition function and obtain an analogous identity for the totient function. As corollaries, we generalize Stanley's theorem as well as provide several new combinatorial results.

The twist for positroid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to connect two maps related to certain graphs embedded in the disc. The first is Postnikov's boundary measurement map, which combines partition functions of matchings in the graph into a map from an algebraic torus to an open positroid variety in a Grassmannian. The second is a rational map from the open positroid variety to an algebraic torus, given by certain Plücker coordinates which are expected to be a cluster in a cluster structure. This paper clarifies the relationship between these two maps, which has been ambiguous since they were introduced by Postnikov in 2001. The missing ingredient supplied by this paper is a twist automorphism of the open positroid variety, which takes the target of the boundary measurement map to the domain of the (conjectural) cluster. Among other applications, this provides an inverse to the boundary measurement map, as well as Laurent formulas for twists of Plücker coordinates.

Quivers with subadditive labelings: classification and integrability
Published • View PublicationBIB
Strictly subadditive, subadditive and weakly subadditive labelings of quivers were introduced by the second author, generalizing Vinberg's definition for undirected graphs. In our previous work we have shown that quivers with strictly subadditive labelings are exactly the quivers exhibiting Zamolodchikov periodicity. In this paper, we classify all quivers with subadditive labelings. We conjecture them to exhibit a certain form of integrability, namely, as the $T$-system dynamics proceeds, the values at each vertex satisfy a linear recurrence. Conversely, we show that every quiver integrable in this sense is necessarily one of the $19$ items in our classification. For the quivers of type $\hat A \otimes A$ we express the coefficients of the recurrences in terms of the partition functions for domino tilings of a cylinder, called \emph{Goncharov-Kenyon Hamiltonians}. We also consider tropical $T$-systems of type $\hat A \otimes A$ and explain how affine slices exhibit solitonic behavior, i.e. soliton resolution and speed conservation. Throughout, we conjecture how the results in the paper are expected to generalize from $\hat A \otimes A$ to all other quivers in our classification.

On the exact learnability of graph parameters: The case of partition functions
We study the exact learnability of real valued graph parameters $f$ which are known to be representable as partition functions which count the number of weighted homomorphisms into a graph $H$ with vertex weights $α$ and edge weights $β$. M. Freedman, L. Lovász and A. Schrijver have given a characterization of these graph parameters in terms of the $k$-connection matrices $C(f,k)$ of $f$. Our model of learnability is based on D. Angluin's model of exact learning using membership and equivalence queries. Given such a graph parameter $f$, the learner can ask for the values of $f$ for graphs of their choice, and they can formulate hypotheses in terms of the connection matrices $C(f,k)$ of $f$. The teacher can accept the hypothesis as correct, or provide a counterexample consisting of a graph. Our main result shows that in this scenario, a very large class of partition functions, the rigid partition functions, can be learned in time polynomial in the size of $H$ and the size of the largest counterexample in the Blum-Shub-Smale model of computation over the reals with unit cost.

On Hamiltonians for six-vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explain a connection between a family of free-fermionic six-vertex models and a discrete time evolution operator on one-dimensional Fermionic Fock space. The family of ice models generalize those with domain wall boundary, and we focus on two sets of Boltzmann weights whose partition functions were previously shown to generalize a generating function identity of Tokuyama. We produce associated Hamiltonians that recover these Boltzmann weights, and furthermore calculate the partition functions using commutation relations and elementary combinatorics. We give an expression for these partition functions as determinants, akin to the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur polynomials.
