Tableau sequences, open diagrams, and Baxter families
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics Volume 58, November 2016, Pages 144-165 • View PublicationBIB
Walks on Young's lattice of integer partitions encode many objects of algebraic and combinatorial interest. Chen et al. established connections between such walks and arc diagrams. We show that walks that start at $\varnothing$, end at a row shape, and only visit partitions of bounded height are in bijection with a new type of arc diagram -- open diagrams. Remarkably two subclasses of open diagrams are equinumerous with well known objects: standard Young tableaux of bounded height, and Baxter permutations. We give an explicit combinatorial bijection in the former case.

Bounded Littlewood identities
Published in Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society, 270 (2021), No 1317, vii+115 pp • View PublicationBIB
We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our method implies that MacMahon's famous ex-conjecture for the generating function of symmetric plane partitions in a box follows from the identification of $(\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R}),\mathrm{O}(n))$ as a Gelfand pair. As further applications, we obtain combinatorial formulas for characters of affine Lie algebras; Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras, complementing recent results of Griffin et al.; and quadratic transformation formulas for Kaneko--Macdonald-type basic hypergeometric series.

Combinatorics on a family of reduced Kronecker coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
The reduced Kronecker coefficients are particular instances of Kronecker coefficients that contain enough information to recover them. In this notes we compute the generating function of a family of reduced Kronecker coefficients. We also gives its connection to the plane partitions, which allows us to check that this family satisfies the saturation conjecture for reduced Kronecker coefficients, and that they are weakly increasing. Thanks to its generating function we can describe our family by a quasipolynomial, specifying its degree and period.

Semi-pointed partition posets and Species
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define semi-pointed partition posets, which are a generalisation of partition posets and show that they are Cohen-Macaulay. We then use multichains to compute the dimension and the character for the action of the symmetric groups on their homology. We finally study the associated incidence Hopf algebra, which is similar to the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra.

Mixing Rates of Random Walks with Little Backtracking
Many regular graphs admit a natural partition of their edge set into cliques of the same order such that each vertex is contained in the same number of cliques. In this paper, we study the mixing rate of certain random walks on such graphs and we generalize previous results of Alon, Benjamini, Lubetzky and Sodin regarding the mixing rates of non-backtracking random walks on regular graphs.

Intersecting $P$-free families
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 151, 2017, Pages 61-83, ISSN 0097-3165 • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of determining the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family for a given partially ordered set (poset) $P$. In particular, we find the exact size of the largest intersecting $B$-free family where $B$ is the butterfly poset and classify the cases of equality. The proof uses a new generalization of the partition method of Griggs, Li and Lu. We also prove generalizations of two well-known inequalities of Bollobás and Greene, Katona and Kleitman in this case. Furthermore, we obtain a general bound on the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family, which is sharp for an infinite class of posets originally considered by Burcsi and Nagy, when $n$ is odd. Finally, we give a new proof of the bound on the maximum size of an intersecting $k$-Sperner family and determine the cases of equality.

A note on the $γ$-coefficients of the "tree Eulerian polynomial"
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23 (2016), no. 1, Paper 1.20, 13 pp • Search Publication
We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered $n$-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. B. Drake proved that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From his product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients in the $γ$-basis and we show that a formula for these coefficients can also be derived. We discuss various combinatorial interpretations of these positive coefficients in terms of leaf-labeled binary trees and in terms of the Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley. These interpretations are derived from previous results of the author and Wachs related to the poset of weighted partitions and the free multibracketed Lie algebra.

Stokes posets and serpent nests
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study two different objects attached to an arbitrary quadrangulation of a regular polygon. The first one is a poset, closely related to the Stokes polytopes introduced by Baryshnikov. The second one is a set of some paths configurations inside the quadrangulation, satisfying some specific constraints. These objects provide a generalisation of the existing combinatorics of cluster algebras and nonnesting partitions of type A.

Representation stability for cohomology of configuration spaces in $\mathbf{R}^d$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies representation stability in the sense of Church and Farb for representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of the configuration space of $n$ ordered points in $\mathbf{R}^d$. This cohomology is known to vanish outside of dimensions divisible by $d-1$; it is shown here that the $S_n$-representation on the $i(d-1)^{st}$ cohomology stabilizes sharply at $n=3i$ (resp. $n=3i+1$) when $d$ is odd (resp. even). The result comes from analyzing $S_n$-representations known to control the cohomology: the Whitney homology of set partition lattices for $d$ even, and the higher Lie representations for $d$ odd. A similar analysis shows that the homology of any rank-selected subposet in the partition lattice stabilizes by $n\geq 4i$, where $i$ is the maximum rank selected. Further properties of the Whitney homology and more refined stability statements for $S_n$-isotypic components are also proven, including conjectures of J. Wiltshire-Gordon.

Tiling with arbitrary tiles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be a tile in $\mathbb{Z}^n$, meaning a finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. It may or may not tile $\mathbb{Z}^n$, in the sense of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ having a partition into copies of $T$. However, we prove that $T$ does tile $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for some $d$. This resolves a conjecture of Chalcraft.

Orthogonal colorings of the sphere
Published in Mathematika 62 (2016) 492-501 • View PublicationBIB
An orthogonal coloring of the two-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, is a partition of $\mathbb{S}^2$ into parts such that no part contains a pair of orthogonal points, that is, a pair of points at spherical distance $π/2$ apart. It is a well-known result that an orthogonal coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ requires at least four parts, and orthogonal colorings with exactly four parts can easily be constructed from a regular octahedron centered at the origin. An intriguing question is whether or not every orthogonal 4-coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ is such an octahedral coloring. In this paper we address this question and show that if every color class has a non-empty interior, then the coloring is octahedral. Some related results are also given.

Coloring so that no Pythagorean Triple is Monochromatic
We address the question of the "partition regularity" of the Pythagorean equation a^2+b^2=c^2; in particular, can the natural numbers be assigned a 2-coloring, so that no Pythagorean triple (i.e., a solution to the equation) is monochromatic? We prove that the hypergraph of Pythagorean triples can contain no Steiner triple systems, a natural obstruction to 2-colorability. Then, after transforming the question into one about 3-CNF satisfiability and applying some reductions, a SAT solver is used to find a 2-coloring for {1,...,7664}. Work continues as we seek to improve the reductions and extend the computation.

Parameters for minimal unsatisfiability: Smarandache primitive numbers and full clauses
We establish a new bridge between propositional logic and elementary number theory. The main objects are "minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets", short "MUs", unsatisfiable conjunctive normal forms rendered satisfiable by elimination of any clause. In other words, irredundant coverings of the boolean hypercube by subcubes. The main parameter for MUs is the "deficiency" k, the difference between the number of clauses and the number of variables (the difference between the number of elements in the covering and the dimension of the hypercube), and the fundamental fact is that k >= 1 holds. A "full clause" in an MU contains all variables (corresponding to a singleton in the covering). We show the lower bound S_2(k) <= FCM(k), where FCM(k) is the maximal number of full clauses in MUs of deficiency k, while S_2(k) is the smallest n such that 2^k divides n!. The proof rests on two methods: On the logic-combinatorial side, applying subsumption resolution and its inverse, a fundamental method since Boole in 1854 introduced the "expansion method". On the arithmetical side, analysing certain recursions, combining an application-specific recursion with a recursion from the field of meta-Fibonacci sequences (indeed S_2 equals twice the Conolly sequence). A further tool is the consideration of unsatisfiable "hitting clause-sets" (UHITs), special cases of MUs, which correspond to the partitions of the boolean hypercube by subcubes; they are also known as orthogonal or disjoint DNF tautologies. We actually show the sharper lower bound S_2(k) <= FCH(k), where FCH(k) is the maximal number of full clauses in UHITs of deficiency k. We conjecture that for all k holds S_2(k) = FCH(k), which would establish a surprising connection between the extremal combinatorics of (un)satisfiability and elementary number theory. We apply the lower bound to analyse the structure of MUs and UHITs.

On the poset of vector partitions
We consider the poset of vector partitions of $[n]$ into $s$ components, denoted $Π_{n,s}$, which was first defined by Stanley in 1978. In 1986, Sagan showed that this poset is CL-shellable, and hence has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of dimension $(n-2)$. We extend on this result to show that $Π_{n,s}$ is edge-lexicographic shellable. We then use this edge-labeling to find a recursive expression for the number of spheres, and show that when $s=1$ the number of spheres is equal to the number of complete non-ambiguous trees, first defined in 2014 by Aval, Boussicault, Bouvel and Silimbani.
Vertex-transitive graphs and their arc-types
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a finite vertex-transitive graph of valency $d$, and let $A$ be the full automorphism group of $X$. Then the arc-type of $X$ is defined in terms of the sizes of the orbits of the action of the stabiliser $A_v$ of a given vertex $v$ on the set of arcs incident with $v$. Specifically, the arc-type is the partition of $d$ as the sum $$n_1 + n_2 + \dots + n_t + (m_1 + m_1) + (m_2 + m_2) + \dots + (m_s + m_s),$$ where $n_1, n_2, \dots, n_t$ are the sizes of the self-paired orbits, and $m_1,m_1, m_2,m_2, \dots, m_s,m_s$ are the sizes of the non-self-paired orbits, in descending order. In this paper, we find the arc-types of several families of graphs. Also we show that the arc-type of a Cartesian product of two `relatively prime' graphs is the natural sum of their arc-types. Then using these observations, we show that with the exception of $1+1$ and $(1+1)$, every partition as defined above is realisable, in the sense that there exists at least one graph with the given partition as its arc-type.

Congruences for spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 80 (2016), 114-130 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. The bar partitions with sign and $p$-bar-core partitions with sign respectively label the spin characters and $p$-defect zero spin characters of the double cover of the symmetric group, and by restriction, those of the alternating group. The generating functions for these objects have been determined by J. Olsson. We study these functions from an arithmetic perspective, using classical analytic tools and elementary generating function manipulation to obtain many Ramanujan-like congruences.

Symmetric Chromatic Polynomial of Trees
In a 1995 paper Richard Stanley defined $X_G$, the symmetric chromatic polynomial of a Graph $G=(V,E)$. He then conjectured that $X_G$ distinguishes trees; a conjecture which still remains open. $X_G$ can be represented as a certain collection of integer partitions of $|V|$ induced by each $S\subseteq E$, which is very approachable with the aid of a computer. Our research involved writing a computer program for efficient verification of this conjecture for trees up to 23 vertices. In this process, we also gather trees with matching collections of integer partitions of a fixed number of parts. For each $k=2, 3, 4, 5$, we provide the smallest pair of trees whose partitions of $k$ parts agree. In 2013, Orellana and Scott give a proof of a weaker version of Stanely's conjecture for trees with one centroid. We prove a similar result for arbitrary trees, and provide examples to show that this result, combined with that of Orellana and Scott, is optimal.

A Nekrasov-Okounkov Type formula for $\widetilde{C}$
In 2008, Han rediscovered an expansion of powers of Dedekind $η$ function attributed to Nekrasov and Okounkov (which was actually first proved the same year by Westbury) by using a famous identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde{A}$ affine root systems. In this paper, we obtain new combinatorial expansions of powers of $η$, in terms of partition hook lengths, by using the Macdonald identity in type $\widetilde{C}$ and a new bijection between vectors with integral coordinates and a subset of $t$-cores for integer partitions. As applications, we derive a symplectic hook formula and an unexpected relation between the Macdonald identities in types $\widetilde{C}$, $\widetilde{B}$, and $\widetilde{BC}$. We also generalize these expansions through the Littlewood decomposition and deduce in particular many new weighted generating functions for subsets of integer partitions and refinements of hook formulas.

Macdonald-Koornwinder moments and the two-species exclusion process
Published in Selecta Mathematica 24 (2018), no. 3, 2275-2317 • View PublicationBIB
Introduced in the late 1960's, the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice with open boundaries. It has been known for awhile that there is a tight connection between the partition function of the ASEP and moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials, a family of orthogonal polynomials which are at the top of the hierarchy of classical orthogonal polynomials in one variable. On the other hand, Askey-Wilson polynomials can be viewed as a specialization of the multivariate Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials (also known as Koornwinder polynomials), which in turn give rise to the Macdonald polynomials associated to any classical root system via a limit or specialization. In light of the fact that Koornwinder polynomials generalize the Askey-Wilson polynomials, it is natural to ask whether one can find a particle model whose partition function is related to Koornwinder polynomials. In this article we answer this question affirmatively, by showing that the "homogeneous" Koornwinder moments at q=t recover the partition function for the two-species exclusion process. We also provide a "hook length" formula for Koornwinder moments when q=t=1.
