The Lattice of integer partitions and its infinite extension
Published in Discrete Mathematics Vol. 309, No. 6, 2009 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use a simple discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions and their lattice. The set of reachable configurations of the model, with the order induced by the transition rule defined on it, is the lattice of all partitions of an integer, equipped with a dominance ordering. We first explain how this lattice can be constructed by an algorithm in linear time with respect to its size by showing that it has a self-similar structure. Then, we define a natural extension of the model to infinity, which we compare with the Young lattice. Using a self-similar tree, we obtain an encoding of the obtained lattice which makes it possible to enumerate easily and efficiently all the partitions of a given integer. This approach also gives a recursive formula for the number of partitions of an integer, and some informations on special sets of partitions, such as length bounded partitions.

Generalized Integer Partitions, Tilings of Zonotopes and Lattices
Published in Proceedings of the 12th International Conference SFCA/FPSAC'00, Springer (publisher), D.Krob, A.A.Mikhalev and A.V.Mikhalev (Eds) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study two kinds of combinatorial objects, generalized integer partitions and tilings of two dimensional zonotopes, using dynamical systems and order theory. We show that the sets of partitions ordered with a simple dynamics, have the distributive lattice structure. Likewise, we show that the set of tilings of zonotopes, ordered with a simple and classical dynamics, is the disjoint union of distributive lattices which we describe. We also discuss the special case of linear integer partitions, for which other dynamical systems exist. These results give a better understanding of the behaviour of tilings of zonotopes with flips and dynamical systems involving partitions.

Ising model on nonorientable surfaces: Exact solution for the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle
Published in Phys.Rev. E63 (2001) 026107 • View PublicationBIB
Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our analysis confirms that the central charge is c=1/2.

A double bounded key identity for Goellnitz's (big) partition theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given integers i,j,k,L,M, we establish a new double bounded q-series identity from which the three parameter (i,j,k) key identity of Alladi-Andrews-Gordon for Goellnitz's (big) theorem follows if L, M tend to infinity. When L = M, the identity yields a strong refinement of Goellnitz's theorem with a bound on the parts given by L. This is the first time a bounded version of Goellnitz's (big) theorem has been proved. This leads to new bounded versions of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions and other fundamental identities.

A Double Bounded Version of Schur's Partition Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur's partition theorem states that the number of partitions of n into distinct parts congruent 1, 2 (mod 3) equals the number of partitions of n into parts which differ by >= 3, where the inequality is strict if a part is a multiple of 3. We establish a double bounded refined version of this theorem by imposing one bound on the parts congruent 0,1 (mod 3) and another on the parts congruent 2 (mod 3), and by keeping track of the number of parts in each of the residue classes (mod 3). Despite the long history of Schur's theorem, our result is new, and extends earlier work of Andrews, Alladi-Gordon and Bressoud. We give combinatorial and q-theoretic proofs of our result. The special case L=M leads to a representation of the generating function of the underlying partitions in terms of the q-trinomial coefficients extending a similar previous representation of Andrews.

Small cones of m-hemimetrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce polyhedral cones associated with $m$-hemimetrics on $n$ points, and, in particular, with $m$-hemimetrics coming from partitions of an $n$-set into $m+1$ blocks. We compute generators and facets of the cones for small values of $m,n$ and study their skeleton graphs.
A four parameter generalization of Gollnitz's (BIG) partition theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We announce a new four parameter partition theorem from which the (big) theorem of Gollnitz follows by setting any one of the parameters equal to 0. This settles a problem of Andrews who asked whether there exists a result that goes beyond the partition theorem of Gollnitz. We state a four parameter q-series identity (key identity) which is the generating function form of this theorem. In a subsequent paper, the proof of the new four parameter key identity will be given.

Structural Properties of Potts Model Partition Functions and Chromatic Polynomials for Lattice Strips
Published in Physica A 296, 131-182 (2001) • View PublicationBIB
partial abstract: The $q$-state Potts model partition function (equivalent to the Tutte polynomial) for a lattice strip of fixed width $L_y$ and arbitrary length $L_x$ has the form $Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}}c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^{L_x}$, where $v$ is a temperature-dependent variable. The special case of the zero-temperature antiferromagnet ($v=-1$) is the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. Using coloring and transfer matrix methods, we give general formulas for $C_{X,G}=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{X,G,λ}}c_{X,G,j}$ for $X=Z,P$ on cyclic and Möbius strip graphs of the square and triangular lattice. Combining these with a general expression for the (unique) coefficient $c_{Z,G,j}$ of degree $d$ in $q$: $c^{(d)}=U_{2d}(\frac{\sqrt{q}}{2})$, where $U_n(x)$ is the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind, we determine the number of $λ_{Z,G,j}$'s with coefficient $c^{(d)}$ in $Z(G,q,v)$ for these cyclic strips of width $L_y$ to be $n_Z(L_y,d)=(2d+1)(L_y+d+1)^{-1} {2L_y \choose L_y-d}$ for $0 \le d \le L_y$ and zero otherwise. For both cyclic and Möbius strips of these lattices, the total number of distinct eigenvalues $λ_{Z,G,j}$ is calculated to be $N_{Z,L_y,λ}={2L_y \choose L_y}$. We point out that $N_{Z,L_y,λ}=2N_{DA,tri,L_y}$ and $N_{P,L_y,λ}=2N_{DA,sq,L_y}$, where $N_{DA,Λ,n}$ denotes the number of directed lattice animals on the lattice $Λ$.

Ground State Entropy of the Potts Antiferromagnet with Next-Nearest-Neighbor Spin-Spin Couplings on Strips of the Square Lattice
Published in Phys. Rev. E62, 4650-4664 (2000) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and $W(q)$, the exponent of the ground-state entropy, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings on square lattice strips, of width $L_y=3$ and $L_y=4$ vertices and arbitrarily great length $L_x$ vertices, with both free and periodic boundary conditions. The resultant values of $W$ for a range of physical $q$ values are compared with each other and with the values for the full 2D lattice. These results give insight into the effect of such non-nearest neighbor couplings on the ground state entropy. We show that the $q=2$ (Ising) and $q=4$ Potts antiferromagnets have zero-temperature critical points on the $L_x \to \infty$ limits of the strips that we study. With the generalization of $q$ from ${\mathbb Z}_+$ to ${\mathbb C}$, we determine the analytic structure of $W(q)$ in the $q$ plane for the various cases.

Identically Distributed Pairs of Partition Statistics
We show that many theorems which assert that two kinds of partitions of the same integer $n$ are equinumerous are actually special cases of a much stronger form of equality. We show that in fact there correspond partition statistics $X$ and $Y$ that have identical distribution functions. The method is an extension of the principle of sieve-equivalence, and it yields simple criteria under which we can infer this identity of distribution functions.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models I. General Theory and Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial
Published in J.Statist.Phys. 104 (2001) 609-699 • View PublicationBIB
We study the chromatic polynomials (= zero-temperature antiferromagnetic Potts-model partition functions) P_G(q) for m \times n rectangular subsets of the square lattice, with m \le 8 (free or periodic transverse boundary conditions) and n arbitrary (free longitudinal boundary conditions), using a transfer matrix in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation. In particular, we extract the limiting curves of partition-function zeros when n \to\infty, which arise from the crossing in modulus of dominant eigenvalues (Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem). We also provide evidence that the Beraha numbers B_2,B_3,B_4,B_5 are limiting points of partition-function zeros as n \to\infty whenever the strip width m is \ge 7 (periodic transverse b.c.) or \ge 8 (free transverse b.c.). Along the way, we prove that a noninteger Beraha number (except perhaps B_{10}) cannot be a chromatic root of any graph.

A Personal List of Unsolved Problems Concerning Lattice Gases and Antiferromagnetic Potts Models
Published in Markov Process. Related Fields 7, 21-38 (2001) • Search Publication
I review recent results and unsolved problems concerning the hard-core lattice gas and the q-coloring model (antiferromagnetic Potts model at zero temperature). For each model, I consider its equilibrium properties (uniqueness/nonuniqueness of the infinite-volume Gibbs measure, complex zeros of the partition function) and the dynamics of local and nonlocal Monte Carlo algorithms (ergodicity, rapid mixing, mixing at complex fugacity). These problems touch on mathematical physics, probability, combinatorics and theoretical computer science.

Then we describe a probabilistic picture of conjugacy classes which is coherent and beautiful. Connections are made with symmetric function theory, Markov chains, potential theory, Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, quivers, and various measures on partitions.

A Partition Theorem
We prove the following: there is a primitive recursive function f_-^*(-,-), in the three variables, such that: for every natural numbers t,n>0, and c, for any natural number k>=f^*_t(n,c) the following holds. Assume L is an alphabet with n>0 letters, M is the family of non empty subsets of {1,...,k} with =<t members and V is the set of functions from M to L, and lastly d is a c-colouring of V (i.e. a function with domain V and range with at most c members). Then there is a d-monochromatic V-line, which means that there are w included in {1,...,k}, with at least t members and a function r from {u in M: u not a subset of w} to L such that letting Y={eta in V: eta extends r and for each s=1,...,t it is constant on {u in M: u is an s-element subset of w}}, we have: the restriction of d to Y is constant (for t=1 those are the Hales Jewett numbers).
Frobenius-Schur functions: summary of results
We introduce and study a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call the Frobenius-Schur functions. These functions are indexed by partitions and differ from the conventional Schur functions in lower terms only. Our interest in these new functions comes from the fact that they provide an explicit expression for the dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This is important for the asymptotic theory of the characters of the symmetric groups. Our main result is a surprisingly simple determinantal expression of the Frobenius-Schur functions in terms of the conventional Schur functions. Other results include certain generating series, the Giambelli formula, vanishing properties and interpolation, a combinatorial formula (representation in terms of tableaux), and a Sergeev-Pragacz-type formula. Actually, we deal with a wider class of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call multiparameter Schur functions. These functions depend on an arbitrary doubly infinite sequence of parameters and interpolate between the Frobenius--Schur functions and the conventional Schur functions. This paper contains the statements of the results and the main formulas. Proofs will be given in an expanded version of the paper which will be posted in the arXiv.

On Erdos's elementary method in the asymptotic theory of partitions
Let m be a positive integer, and let A be the set of all positive integers that belong to a union of r distinct congruence classes modulo m. We assume that the elements of A are relatively prime, that is, gcd(A) = 1. Let p_A(n) denote the number of partitions of n into parts belonging to A. We obtain the asymptotic formula log p_A(n) ~ π\sqrt(2rn/3m). The proof is based on Erdos's elementary method to obtain the asymptotic formula for the usual partition function p(n).

N-graphs, modular Sidon and sum-free sets, and partition identities

Using a new graphical representation for partitions, the author obtains a family of partition identities associated with partitions into distinct parts of an arithmetic progression, or, more generally, with partitions into distinct parts of a set that is a finite union of arithmetic progressions associated with a modular sum-free Sidon set. Partition identities are also constructed for sets associated with modular sum-free sets.
