Partitions with parts in a finite set
Published in Proceedings of the American Math. Society 128 (2000), 1269--1273 • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a nonempty finite set of relatively prime positive integers, and let p_A(n) denote the number of partitions of n with parts in A. An elementary arithmetic argument is used to obtain an asymptotic formula for p_A(n).

Graphical Compositions 1: Basic Enumeration
Graph compositions generalize both integer compositions and partitions of a finite set. We develop formulas, generating functions and recurrence relations for composition counting functions for several families of graphs.

T=0 Partition Functions for Potts Antiferromagnets on Square Lattice Strips with (Twisted) Periodic Boundary Conditions
Published in J. Phys A (Letts.) 32, L489-L493 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently, the chromatic polynomial) for two families of arbitrarily long strip graphs of the square lattice with periodic boundary conditions in the transverse direction and (i) periodic (ii) twisted periodic boundary conditions in the longitudinal direction, so that the strip graphs are embedded on a (i) torus (ii) Klein bottle. In the limit of infinite length, we calculate the exponent of the entropy, W(q), show it to be the same for (i) and (ii), and determine its analytic structure.

Une identité remarquable en théorie des partitions

We prove an identity about partitions, previously conjectured in the study of shifted Jack polynomials (math.CO/9903020). The proof given is using $λ$-ring techniques. It would be interesting to obtain a bijective proof.

The Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$ We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an arbitrary shape and $μ$ and $ν$ are hook shapes or two-row shapes. Remmel \cite{Re1, Re2} and Remmel and Whitehead \cite{Re-Wh} derived some closed formulas for the Kronecker product of Schur functions indexed by two-row shapes or hook shapes using a different approach. We believe that the approach of this paper is more natural. The formulas obtained are simpler and reflect the symmetry of the Kronecker product.

A Probabilistic Proof of the Rogers Ramanujan Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
The asymptotic probability theory of conjugacy classes of the finite general linear and unitary groups leads to a probability measure on the set of all partitions of natural numbers. A simple method of understanding these measures in terms of Markov chains is given and compared with work on the uniform measure. Elementary probabilistic proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities follow. As a corollary, the main case of Bailey's lemma is interpreted as finding eigenvectors of the transition matrix of the Markov chain. It is shown that the viewpoint of Markov chains extends to quivers.

Left-modular elements
Published in J. Combin. Theory (A) 91 (2000), 369-385. • View PublicationBIB
Left-modularity is a concept that generalizes modularity in lattice theory. In this paper, we give a characterization of left-modular elements and derive two formulae for the characteristic polynomial of a lattice with such an element, one of which generalizes Stanley's Partial Factorization Theorem for a geometric lattice with a modular element. Both formulae provide us with inductive proofs of Blass and Sagan's Total Factorization Theorem for LL lattices. The characteristic polynomials and Mobius functions of non-crossing partition lattices and shuffle posets are computed as examples.

New Examples of Potential Theory on Bratelli Diagrams
We consider potential theory on Bratteli diagrams arising from Macdonald polynomials. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is particularly interesting; the elements of the diagram are partitions, the branching multiplicities are integers, the combinatorial dimensions are Green's polynomials, and the Jordan form of a randomly chosen unipotent upper triangular matrix over a finite field gives rise to a harmonic function. The case of Schur functions yields natural deformations of the Young lattice and Plancharel measure. Many harmonic functions are constructed and algorithms for sampling from the underlying probability measures are given.

Matrices and $α$-Stable Bipartite Graphs
A square (0,1)-matrix X of order n > 0 is called fully indecomposable if there exists no integer k with 0 < k < n, such that X has a k by n-k zero submatrix. A stable set of a graph G is a subset of pairwise nonadjacent vertices. The stability number of G, denoted by $α(G)$, is the cardinality of a maximum stable set in G. A graph is called $α$-stable if its stability number remains the same upon both the deletion and the addition of any edge. We show that a connected bipartite graph has exactly two maximum stable sets that partition its vertex set if and only if its reduced adjacency matrix is fully indecomposable. We also describe a decomposition structure of $α$-stable bipartite graphs in terms of their reduced adjacency matrices. On the base of these findings we obtain both new proofs for a number of well-known theorems on the structure of matrices due to Brualdi, Marcus and Minc, Dulmage and Mendelsohn, and some generalizations of these statements. Several new results on $α$-stable bipartite graphs and their corresponding reduced adjacency matrices are presented, as well. Two kinds of matrix product are also considered (namely, Boolean product and Kronecker product), and their corresponding graph operations. As a consequence, we obtain a strengthening of one Lewin's theorem claiming that the product of two fully indecomposable matrices is a fully indecomposable matrix.

Universal Distributions for Growth Processes in 1+1 Dimensions and Random Matrices
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4882 (2000) • View PublicationBIB
We develop a scaling theory for KPZ growth in one dimension by a detailed study of the polynuclear growth (PNG) model. In particular, we identify three universal distributions for shape fluctuations and their dependence on the macroscopic shape. These distribution functions are computed using the partition function of Gaussian random matrices in a cosine potential.

Ubiquity of Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We report about results revolving around Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials and their connections with Representation Theory and Combinatorics. It appears that the set of all parabolic Kostka polynomials forms a semigroup, which we call {\it Liskova semigroup}. We show that polynomials frequently appearing in Representation Theory and Combinatorics belong to the Liskova semigroup. Among such polynomials we study rectangular $q$-Catalan numbers; generalized exponents polynomials; principal specializations of the internal product of Schur functions; generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials; parabolic Kostant partition function and its $q$-analog; certain generating functions on the set of transportation matrices. In each case we apply rigged configurations technique to obtain some interesting and new information about Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials, Kostant partition function, MacMahon, Gelfand-Tsetlin and Chan-Robbins polytopes. We describe certain connections between generalized saturation and Fulton's conjectures and parabolic Kostka polynomials; domino tableaux and rigged configurations. We study also some properties of $l$-restricted generalized exponents and the stable behaviour of certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
Enumeration of lozenge tilings of hexagons with a central triangular hole
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 95 (2001), 251-334 • View PublicationBIB
We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such specialization gives a proof of a conjecture of Stembridge on a certain weighted count of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. The tools employed in our proofs are nonstandard applications of the theory of nonintersecting lattice paths and determinant evaluations. In particular, we evaluate the determinants $\det_{0\le i,j\le n-1}\big(\om δ_{ij}+\binom {m+i+j}j\big)$, where $\om$ is any 6th root of unity. These determinant evaluations are variations of a famous result due to Andrews (Invent. Math. 53 (1979), 193--225), which corresponds to $\om=1$.

Chromatic Polynomials, Potts Models and All That
Published in Physica A279 (2000) 324-332 • View PublicationBIB
The q-state Potts model can be defined on an arbitrary finite graph, and its partition function encodes much important information about that graph, including its chromatic polynomial, flow polynomial and reliability polynomial. The complex zeros of the Potts partition function are of interest both to statistical mechanicians and to combinatorists. I give a pedagogical introduction to all these problems, and then sketch two recent results: (a) Construction of a countable family of planar graphs whose chromatic zeros are dense in the whole complex q-plane except possibly for the disc |q-1| < 1. (b) Proof of a universal upper bound on the q-plane zeros of the chromatic polynomial (or antiferromagnetic Potts-model partition function) in terms of the graph's maximum degree.

Combinatorial and topological approach to the 3D Ising model
Published in J.Phys.A33:741-761,2000 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the planar Pfaffian formalism for the evaluation of the Ising partition function to lattices of high topological genus g. The 3D Ising model on a cubic lattice, where g is proportional to the number of sites, is discussed in detail. The expansion of the partition function is given in terms of 2^{2 g} Pfaffians classified by the oriented homology cycles of the lattice, i.e. by its spin-structures. Correct counting is guaranteed by a signature term which depends on the topological intersection of the oriented cycles through a simple bilinear formula. The role of a gauge symmetry arising in the above expansion is discussed. The same formalism can be applied to the counting problem of perfect matchings over general lattices and provides a determinant expansion of the permanent of 0-1 matrices.

Universality of correlations of levels with discrete statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the statistics of a system of N random levels with integer values, in the presence of a logarithmic repulsive potential of Dyson type. This probleme arises in sums over representations (Young tableaux) of GL(N) in various matrix problems and in the study of statistics of partitions for the permutation group. The model is generalized to include an external source and its correlators are found in closed form for any N. We reproduce the density of levels in the large N and double scaling limits and the universal correlation functions in Dyson's short-distance scaling limit. We also study the statistics of small levels.

T=0 Partition Functions for Potts Antiferromagnets on Moebius Strips and Effects of Graph Topology
Published in Phys.Lett. A261 (1999) 57 • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently the chromatic polynomial) for Moebius strips, with width $L_y=2$ or 3, of regular lattices and homeomorphic expansions thereof. These are compared with the corresponding partition functions for strip graphs with (untwisted) periodic longitudinal boundary conditions.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.

A polytope related to empirical distributions, plane trees, parking functions, and the associahedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define an n-dimensional polytope Pi_n(x), depending on parameters x_i>0, whose combinatorial properties are closely connected with empirical distributions, plane trees, plane partitions, parking functions, and the associahedron. In particular, we give explicit formulas for the volume of Pi_n(x) and, when the x_i's are integers, the number of integer points in Pi_n(x). We give two polyhedral decompositions of Pi_n(x), one related to order cones of posets and the other to the associahedron.

On Multi-color partitions and the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities
Published in Commun. Cont. Math. 3 (2001), 533-548 • View PublicationBIB
Basil Gordon, in the sixties, and George Andrews, in the seventies, generalized the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to higher moduli. These identities arise in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. One of these areas is representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, where various known interpretations of these identities have led to interesting applications. Motivated by their connections with Lie algebra representation theory, we give a new interpretation of a sum related to generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of multi-color partitions.

Plucker Relations on Schur Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a set of algebraic relations among Schur functions which are a multi-time generalization of the ``discrete Hirota relations'' known to hold among the Schur functions of rectangular partitions. We prove the relations as an application of a technique for turning Plucker relations into statements about Schur functions and other objects with similar definitions as determinants. We also give a quantum analog of the relations which incorporates spectral parameters. Our proofs are mostly algebraic, but the relations have a clear combinatorial side, which we discuss.
