On a pattern avoidance condition for the wreath product of cyclic groups with symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we extend to a non-consecutive case, the study of the pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group initiated by the authors in a previous paper. The main focus of our paper is (colored) patterns of length 2, although a number of enumerative results for longer patterns are also presented. A new non-trivial bijective interpretation for the Catalan numbers is found, in terms of simultaneously bi-avoiding two patterns in a wreath product.

Pattern avoidance and RSK-like algorithms for alternating permutations and Young tableaux
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 118(4): 1436-1450, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We define a class L_{n, k} of permutations that generalizes alternating (up-down) permutations and give bijective proofs of certain pattern-avoidance results for this class. As a special case of our results, we give two bijections between the set A_{2n}(1234) of alternating permutations of length 2n with no four-term increasing subsequence and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^n), and between the set A_{2n + 1}(1234) and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^{n - 1}, 2, 1). This represents the first enumeration of alternating permutations avoiding a pattern of length four. We also extend previous work on doubly-alternating permutations (alternating permutations whose inverses are alternating) to our more general context. The set L_{n, k} may be viewed as the set of reading words of the standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shape. In the last section of the paper, we expand our study to consider pattern avoidance in the reading words of standard Young tableaux of any skew shape. We show bijectively that the number of standard Young tableaux of shape lambda/mu whose reading words avoid 213 is a natural mu-analogue of the Catalan numbers (and in particular does not depend on lambda, up to a simple technical condition), and that there are similar results for the patterns 132, 231 and 312.

Further applications of a power series method for pattern avoidance
Published • View PublicationBIB
In combinatorics on words, a word w over an alphabet Sigma is said to avoid a pattern p over an alphabet Delta if there is no factor x of w and no non-erasing morphism h from Delta^* to Sigma^* such that h(p) = x. Bell and Goh have recently applied an algebraic technique due to Golod to show that for a certain wide class of patterns p there are exponentially many words of length n over a 4-letter alphabet that avoid p. We consider some further consequences of their work. In particular, we show that any pattern with k variables of length at least 4^k is avoidable on the binary alphabet. This improves an earlier bound due to Cassaigne and Roth.

Pattern avoidance and smoothness of closures for orbits of a symmetric subgroup in the flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a pattern avoidance criterion to classify the orbits of Sp(p,C) x Sp(q,C) (resp. GL(n,C)) on the flag variety of type C_{p+q} (resp. D_n) with rationally smooth closure. We show that all such orbit closures fiber (with smooth fiber) over a smaller flag variety, and hence are in fact smooth. In addition we prove that the classification is insensitive to isogeny.

Pattern avoidance in binary trees
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 117 (2010) 741-758 • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers the enumeration of trees avoiding a contiguous pattern. We provide an algorithm for computing the generating function that counts n-leaf binary trees avoiding a given binary tree pattern t. Equipped with this counting mechanism, we study the analogue of Wilf equivalence in which two tree patterns are equivalent if the respective n-leaf trees that avoid them are equinumerous. We investigate the equivalence classes combinatorially. Toward establishing bijective proofs of tree pattern equivalence, we develop a general method of restructuring trees that conjecturally succeeds to produce an explicit bijection for each pair of equivalent tree patterns.

Pattern Avoidance in Generalized Non-crossing Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, the problem of pattern avoidance in generalized non-crossing trees is studied. The generating functions for generalized non-crossing trees avoiding patterns of length one and two are obtained. Lagrange inversion formula is used to obtain the explicit formulas for some special cases. Bijection is also established between generalized non-crossing trees with special pattern avoidance and the little Schröder paths.

Pattern avoidance in "flattened" partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
To flatten a set partition (with apologies to Mathematica) means to form a permutation by erasing the dividers between its blocks. Of course, the result depends on how the blocks are listed. For the usual listing--increasing entries in each block and blocks arranged in increasing order of their first entries--we count the partitions of [n] whose flattening avoids a single 3-letter pattern. Five counting sequences arise: a null sequence, the powers of 2, the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, and the binomial transform of the Catalan numbers.

On Three Different Notions of Monotone Subsequences
We review how the monotone pattern compares to other patterns in terms of enumerative results on pattern avoiding permutations. We consider three natural definitions of pattern avoidance, give an overview of classic and recent formulas, and provide some new results related to limiting distributions.

Pattern avoidance and the Bruhat order on involutions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 30 (2009), no. 1, 87--102 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the principal order ideal below an element w in the Bruhat order on involutions in a symmetric group is a Boolean lattice if and only if w avoids the patterns 4321, 45312 and 456123. Similar criteria for signed permutations are also stated. Involutions with this property are enumerated with respect to natural statistics. In this context, a bijective correspondence with certain Motzkin paths is demonstrated.

Leading coefficients of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials for Deodhar elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the leading coefficient of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial $P_{x,w}(q)$ known as $μ(x,w)$ is always either 0 or 1 when $w$ is a Deodhar element of a finite Weyl group. The Deodhar elements have previously been characterized using pattern avoidance by Billey--Warrington (2001) and Billey--Jones (2007). In type $A$, these elements are precisely the 321-hexagon avoiding permutations. Using Deodhar's (1990) algorithm, we provide some combinatorial criteria to determine when $μ(x,w) = 1$ for such permutations $w$.

Total positivity for cominuscule Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we explore the combinatorics of the non-negative part (G/P)+ of a cominuscule Grassmannian. For each such Grassmannian we define Le-diagrams -- certain fillings of generalized Young diagrams which are in bijection with the cells of (G/P)+. In the classical cases, we describe Le-diagrams explicitly in terms of pattern avoidance. We also define a game on diagrams, by which one can reduce an arbitrary diagram to a Le-diagram. We give enumerative results and relate our Le-diagrams to other combinatorial objects. Surprisingly, the totally non-negative cells in the open Schubert cell of the odd and even orthogonal Grassmannians are (essentially) in bijection with preference functions and atomic preference functions respectively.

Pattern Avoiding Ballot Paths and Finite Operator Calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Counting pattern avoiding ballot paths begins with a careful analysis of the pattern. Not the length, but the characteristics of the pattern are responsible for the difficulties in finding explicit solutions. Certain features, like overlap and difference in number of right and up steps determine the solution of the recursion formula. If the recursion can be solved by a polynomial sequence, we apply the Finite Operator Calculus to find an explicit form of the solution in terms of binomial coefficients. The forgotten monoid
Published in RIMS Kokyuroku Bessatsu B8 (2008) 71-83 • Search Publication
We study properties of the forgotten monoid which appeared in work of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and recently resurfaced in the construction of dual equivalence graphs by Assaf. In particular, we provide an explicit characterization of the forgotten classes in terms of inversion numbers and show that there are n^2-3n+4 forgotten classes in the symmetric group S_n. Each forgotten class contains a canonical element that can be characterized by pattern avoidance. We also show that the sum of Gessel's quasi-symmetric functions over a forgotten class is a 0-1 sum of ribbon-Schur functions.

Towards the Distribution of the Size of a Largest Planar Matching and Largest Planar Subgraph in Random Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of r-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph) of at most d edges to a signed sum of restricted lattice walks in Z^d, and to the number of pairs of standard Young tableaux of the same shape and with a ``descend--type'' property. Our results are obtained via generalizations of two combinatorial proofs through which Gessel's identity can be obtained (an identity that is crucial in the derivation of a bivariate generating function associated to the distribution of LISs, and key to the analytic attack on Ulam's problem). We also initiate the study of pattern avoidance in bipartite multigraphs and derive a generalized Gessel identity for the number of bipartite 2-regular multigraphs avoiding a specific (monotone) pattern.

Embedded factor patterns for Deodhar elements in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for finite Weyl groups arise in the geometry of Schubert varieties and representation theory. It was proved very soon after their introduction that they have nonnegative integer coefficients, but no completely combinatorial interpretation for them is known in general. Deodhar (1990) has given a framework for computing the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, which generally involves recursion. We define embedded factor pattern avoidance for general Coxeter groups and use it to characterize when Deodhar's algorithm yields a simple combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of finite Weyl groups. Equivalently, if $(W, S)$ is a Coxeter system for a finite Weyl group, we classify the elements $w \in W$ for which the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element $C'_w$ can be written as a monomial of $C'_s$ where $s \in S$. This work generalizes results of Billey-Warrington (2001) which identified the Deodhar elements in type $A$ as 321-hexagon-avoiding permutations, and Fan-Green (1997) which identified the fully-tight Coxeter groups.

Some statistics on permutations avoiding generalized patterns
In the last decade a huge amount of articles has been published studying pattern avoidance on permutations. From the point of view of enumeration, typically one tries to count permutations avoiding certain patterns according to their lengths. Here we tackle the problem of refining this enumeration by considering the statistics "first/last entry". We give complete results for every generalized patterns of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$ as well as for some cases of permutations avoiding a pair of generalized patterns of the above types.

Interval pattern avoidance for arbitrary root systems
Published in Canad. Math. Bull. 53 (2010) 757--762 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the idea of interval pattern avoidance defined by Yong and the author for $S_n$ to arbitrary Weyl groups using the definition of pattern avoidance due to Billey and Braden, and Billey and Postnikov. We show that, as previously shown by Yong and the author for $GL_n$, interval pattern avoidance is a universal tool for characterizing which Schubert varieties have certain local properties, and where these local properties hold.

Pattern Avoidance and the Bruhat Order
Published • View PublicationBIB
The structure of order ideals in the Bruhat order for the symmetric group is elucidated via permutation patterns. A method for determining non-isomorphic principal order ideals is described and applied for small lengths. The permutations with boolean principal order ideals are characterized. These form an order ideal which is a simplicial poset, and its rank generating function is computed. Moreover, the permutations whose principal order ideals have a form related to boolean posets are also completely described. It is determined when the set of permutations avoiding a particular set of patterns is an order ideal, and the rank generating functions of these ideals are computed. Finally, the Bruhat order in types B and D is studied, and the elements with boolean principal order ideals are characterized and enumerated by length.

Pattern Avoidance in Set Partitions
The study of patterns in permutations in a very active area of current research. Klazar defined and studied an analogous notion of pattern for set partitions. We continue this work, finding exact formulas for the number of set partitions which avoid certain specific patterns. In particular, we enumerate and characterize those partitions avoiding any partition of a 3-element set. This allows us to conclude that the corresponding sequences are P-recursive. Finally, we define a second notion of pattern in a set partition, based on its restricted growth function. Related results are obtained for this new definition.
