The generalized Sierpiński Arrowhead Curve
We define special Hamiltonian-paths and special permutations of the up-facing dark tiles on a checked triangular grid related to the generalized Sierpiński Gasket. Our definitions and observations make possible the generalization of the Sierpiński Arrowhead Curve for all orders. We produce these symmetric recursive curves in many ways by two kinds of asymmetric paths which are in a bijective relation and unambiguously transformable into each other in any order. These node-rewriting and edge-rewriting recursive curves keep their self-avoiding and simple properties after the transformation and their cardinality specifies a new integer sequence. We show a transformation table to change the curves into each other and we give another table to change them into Lindenmayer-system strings both by the absolute direction codes of their edges.
The Number of $k$-Cycles In a Family of Restricted Permutations
In this paper we study different restrictions imposed over the set of permutations of size $n$, $S_n$, and for specific classes of restrictions study the cycle structure of corresponding permutations. More specifically, we prove that for any fixed positive integer $k$, the number of $k$-cycles of a uniformly chosen permutation $π\in S_n$ with the restriction "$π(i) \geq i-1$" for $i \in \{2, \ldots, n\}$ has a Normal asymptotic distribution. We further prove that this result translates into CLTs regarding multiplicities of fixed-size parts of a uniformly selected composition of $n$.
Quarter-Turn Baxter Permutations
Baxter permutations are known to be in bijection with a wide number of combinatorial objects. Previously, it was shown that each of these objects had a natural involution which was carried equivariantly by the known bijections, and the number of objects fixed under involution was given by Stembridge's $q=-1$ phenomenon. In this paper, we consider the order 4 action of a quarter-turn rotation of a Baxter permutation matrix, refining the half-turn rotation previously studied. Using the method of generating trees, we show that the number of Baxter permutations fixed under quarter-turn rotation has a very nice enumeration, which suggests the existence of a combinatorial bijection.
On cyclic descents for tableaux

The notion of descent set, for permutations as well as for standard Young tableaux (SYT), is classical. Cellini introduced a natural notion of {\em cyclic descent set} for permutations, and Rhoades introduced such a notion for SYT --- but only for rectangular shapes. In this work we define {\em cyclic extensions} of descent sets in a general context, and prove existence and essential uniqueness for SYT of almost all shapes. The proof applies nonnegativity properties of Postnikov's toric Schur polynomials, providing a new interpretation of certain Gromov-Witten invariants.

It is well known that many geometric properties of Schubert varieties of type $A$ can be interpreted combinatorially. Given two permutations $w,x\in S_n$ we give a combinatorial consequence of the property that the smooth locus of the Schubert variety $X_w$ contains the Schubert cell $Y_x$. This is a necessary ingredient for the interpretation of recent representation-theoretic results of the author with Mínguez in terms of identities of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.

Hultman, Linusson, Shareshian, and Sjöstrand gave a pattern avoidance characterization of the permutations for which the number of chambers of its associated inversion arrangement is the same as the size of its lower interval in Bruhat order. Hultman later gave a characterization, valid for an arbitrary finite reflection group, in terms of distances in the Bruhat graph. On the other hand, the pattern avoidance criterion for permutations had earlier appeared in independent work of Sjöstrand and of Gasharov and Reiner. We give characterizations of the elements of the hyperoctahedral groups satisfying Hultman's criterion that is in the spirit of those of Sjöstrand and of Gasharov and Reiner. We also give a pattern avoidance criterion using the notion of pattern avoidance defined by Billey and Postnikov.

We provide a classification of the homogeneous 3-dimensional permutation structures, i.e. homogeneous structures in a language of 3 linear orders, partially answering a question of Cameron. We also arrive at a natural description of all known homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures by modifying the language used in the construction from a previous paper, completing the "census" begun there.
Enumerating permutations sortable by $k$ passes through a pop-stack

In an exercise in the first volume of his famous series of books, Knuth considered sorting permutations by passing them through a stack. Many variations of this exercise have since been considered, including allowing multiple passes through the stack and using different data structures. We are concerned with a variation using pop-stacks that was introduced by Avis and Newborn in 1981. Let $P_k(x)$ be the generating function for the permutations sortable by $k$ passes through a pop-stack. The generating function $P_2(x)$ was recently given by Pudwell and Smith (the case $k=1$ being trivial). We show that $P_k(x)$ is rational for any $k$. Moreover, we give an algorithm to derive $P_k(x)$, and using it we determine the generating functions $P_k(x)$ for $k\leq 6$.

Using a result of Gessel and Reutenauer, we find a simple formula for the number of cyclic permutations with a given descent set, by expressing it in terms of ordinary descent numbers (i.e., those counting all permutations with a given descent set). We then use this formula to show that, for almost all sets $I \subseteq [n-1]$, the fraction of size-$n$ permutations with descent set $I$ which are $n$-cycles is asymptotically $1/n$. As a special case, we recover a result of Stanley for alternating cycles. We also use our formula to count the cycles that do not have two consecutive descents.
Modular decomposition of transitive graphs and transitively orienting their complements
The modular decomposition of a graph is a canonical representation of its modules. Algorithms for computing the modular decomposition of directed and undirected graphs differ significantly, with the undirected case being simpler, and algorithms for directed graphs often work by reducing the problem to decomposing undirected graphs. In this paper we show that transitive acyclic digraphs have the same strong modules as their undirected versions. This simplifies reduction for transitive digraphs, requiring only the computation of strongly connected components. Furthermore, we are interested in permutation graphs, where both the graph and its complement are transitively orientable. Such graphs may be represented indirectly, as the transitive closure of a given graph. For non-transitive graphs we present a linear-time algorithm which allows us to identify prime-free modules w.r.t their transitive closure, which speeds up both modular decomposition and transitive orientation for sparse graphs. Finally, we show that any transitive orientation of a digraph's complement also transitively orients the complement of the digraph's transitive closure, allowing us to find such orientations in (near-)linear time.
Theta maps for combinatorial Hopf algebras
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are generalizations of the peak algebra. We also indicate a criterion to check whether a map is a Theta map. Moreover, precise descriptions of the Theta maps for the following Hopf algebras will be presented, Hopf subalgebras of quasisymmetric functions, commutative and co-commutative Hopf algebras, and theta maps for a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{V}$ on permutations.
Wilf-collapse in permutation classes having two basis elements of size three
We consider permutation classes having two basis elements of size three and one further basis element. We completely classify the possible enumeration sequences of such classes and demonstrate that there are far fewer of them than might be expected in principle.

321-avoiding affine permutations and their many heaps

We study $321$-avoiding affine permutations, and prove a formula for their enumeration with respect to the inversion number by using a combinatorial approach. This is done in two different ways, both related to Viennot's theory of heaps. First, we encode these permutations using certain heaps of monomers and dimers. This method specializes to the case of affine involutions. For the second proof, we introduce periodic parallelogram polyominoes, which are new combinatorial objects of independent interest. We enumerate them by extending the approach of Bousquet-Mélou and Viennot used for classical parallelogram polyominoes. We finally establish a connection between these new objects and $321$-avoiding affine permutations.

We show that the Möbius function of an interval in a permutation poset where the lower bound is sum (resp. skew) indecomposable depends solely on the sum (resp. skew) indecomposable permutations contained in the upper bound, and that this can simplify the calculation of the Möbius sum. For increasing oscillations, we give a recursion for the Möbius sum which only involves evaluating simple inequalities.
Multiplicative and Exponential Variations of Orthomorphisms of Cyclic Groups

An orthomorphism is a permutation $σ$ of $\{1, \dots, n-1\}$ for which $x + σ(x) \mod n$ is also a permutation on $\{1, \dots, n-1\}$. Eberhard, Manners, Mrazović, showed that the number of such orthomorphisms is $(\sqrt{e} + o(1)) \cdot \frac{n!^2}{n^n}$ for odd $n$ and zero otherwise.
In this paper we prove two analogs of these results where $x+σ(x)$ is replaced by $x σ(x)$ (a "multiplicative orthomorphism") or with $x^{σ(x)}$ (an "exponential orthomorphism"). Namely, we show that no multiplicative orthomorphisms exist for $n > 2$ but that exponential orthomorphisms exist whenever $n$ is twice a prime $p$ such that $p-1$ is squarefree. In the latter case we then estimate the number of exponential orthomorphisms.
Ramsey expansions of $Λ$-ultrametric spaces

For a finite lattice $Λ$, $Λ$-ultrametric spaces are a convenient language for describing structures equipped with a family of equivalence relations. When $Λ$ is finite and distributive, there exists a generic $Λ$-ultrametric space, and we here identify a family of Ramsey expansions for that space. This then allows a description the universal minimal flow of its automorphism group, and also implies the Ramsey property for all known homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures, i.e. structures in a language of finitely many linear orders. A point of technical interest is that our proof involves classes with non-unary algebraic closure operations. As a byproduct of some of the concepts developed, we also arrive at a natural description of the known homogeneous finite-dimensional permutation structures, completing our previously begun "census".
Zeons, Permanents, the Johnson scheme, and Generalized Derangements

Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra" the connection with permanents is shown. Permanents of sub-matrices of a linear combination of the identity matrix and all-ones matrix leads to moment polynomials with respect to the exponential distribution. A permanent trace formula analogous to MacMahon's Master Theorem is presented and applied. Connections with permutation groups acting on sets and the Johnson association scheme arise. The families of numbers appearing as matrix entries turn out to be related to interesting variations on derangements. These generalized derangements are considered in detail as an illustration of the theory.

Lower bounds for the Rényi entropies of sums of independent random variables taking values in cyclic groups of prime order under permutations are established. The main ingredients of our approach are extended rearrangement inequalities in prime cyclic groups building on Lev (2001), and notions of stochastic ordering. Several applications are developed, including to discrete entropy power inequalities, the Littlewood-Offord problem, and counting solutions of certain linear systems.

An $r$-matrix is a matrix with symbols in $\{0,1,\ldots,r-1\}$. A matrix is simple if it has no repeated columns. Let ${\cal F}$ be a finite set of $r$-matrices. Let $\hbox{forb}(m,r,{\cal F})$ denote the maximum number of columns possible in a simple $r$-matrix
$A$ that has no submatrix which is a row and column permutation of any $F\in{\cal F}$. Many investigations have involved $r=2$. For general $r$, $\hbox{forb}(m,r,{\cal F})$ is polynomial in $m$ if and only if for every pair $i,j\in\{0,1,\ldots,r-1\}$ there is a matrix in ${\cal F}$ whose entries are only $i$ or $j$.
Let ${\cal T}_{\ell}(r)$ denote the following $r$-matrices. For a pair $i,j\in\{0,1,\ldots,r-1\}$ we form four $\ell\times\ell$ matrices namely the matrix with $i$'s on the diagonal and $j$'s off the diagonal and the matrix with $i$'s on and above the diagonal and $j$'s below the diagonal and the two matrices with the roles of $i,j$ reversed. Anstee and Lu determined that $\hbox{forb}(m,r,{\cal T}_{\ell}(r))$ is a constant. Let ${\cal F}$ be a finite set of 2-matrices. We ask if $\hbox{forb}(m,r,{\cal T}_{\ell}(3)\backslash {\cal T}_{\ell}(2)\cup {\cal F})$ is $Θ(\hbox{forb}(m,2,{\cal F}))$ and settle this in the affirmative for some cases including most 2-columned $F$.
