Anagram-free colourings of graph subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
An anagram is a word of the form $WP$ where $W$ is a non-empty word and $P$ is a permutation of $W$. A vertex colouring of a graph is anagram-free if no subpath of the graph is an anagram. Anagram-free graph colouring was independently introduced by Kamčev, Łuczak and Sudakov and ourselves. In this paper we introduce the study of anagram-free colourings of graph subdivisions. We show that every graph has an anagram-free $8$-colourable subdivision. The number of division vertices per edge is exponential in the number of edges. For trees, we construct anagram-free $10$-colourable subdivisions with fewer division vertices per edge. Conversely, we prove lower bounds, in terms of division vertices per edge, on the anagram-free chromatic number for subdivisions of the complete graph and subdivisions of complete trees of bounded degree.

Few Sequence Pairs Suffice: Representing All Rectangle Placements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider representations of general non-overlapping placements of rectangles by spatial relations (west, south, east, north) of pairs of rectangles. We call a set of representations complete if it contains a representation of every placement of $n$ rectangles. We prove a new upper bound of $\mathcal{O}(\frac{n!}{n^6} \cdot (\frac{11+5 \sqrt 5}{2})^n)$ and a new lower bound of $Ω(\frac{n!}{n^4} \cdot (4 + 2 \sqrt2)^n)$ on the minimum cardinality of complete sets of representations. A key concept in the proofs of these results are pattern-avoiding permutations. The new upper bound directly improves upon the well-known sequence pair representation, which has size $(n!)^2$, by only considering a restricted set of sequence pairs. It implies theoretically faster algorithms for VLSI placement problems.
Box polynomials and the excedance matrix
We consider properties of the box polynomials, a one variable polynomial defined over all integer partitions $λ$ whose Young diagrams fit in an $m$ by $n$ box. We show that these polynomials can be expressed by the finite difference operator applied to the power $x^{m+n}$. Evaluating box polynomials yields a variety of identities involving set partition enumeration. We extend the latter identities using restricted growth words and a new operator called the fast Fourier operator, and consider connections between set partition enumeration and the chromatic polynomial on graphs. We also give connections between the box polynomials and the excedance matrix, which encodes combinatorial data from a noncommutative quotient algebra motivated by the recurrence for the excedance set statistic on permutations.
Peaks on Graphs
Given a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and a bijective labeling of the vertices using the integers $1,2,\ldots, n$, we say $G$ has a peak at vertex $v$ if the degree of $v$ is greater than or equal to 2, and if the label on $v$ is larger than the label of all its neighbors. Fix an enumeration of the vertices of $G$ as $v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_{n}$ and a fix a set $S\subset V(G)$. We want to determine the number of distinct bijective labelings of the vertices of $G$, such that the vertices in $S$ are precisely the peaks of $G$. The set $S$ is called the \emph{peak set of the graph} $G$, and the set of all labelings with peak set $S$ is denoted by $\PSG$. This definition generalizes the study of peak sets of permutations, as that work is the special case of $G$ being the path graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we present an algorithm for constructing all of the bijective labelings in $\PSG$ for any $S\subseteq V(G)$. We also explore peak sets in certain families of graphs, including cycle graphs and joins of graphs.

Mahonian STAT on rearrangement class of words
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson generalized the notion of permutation patterns to the so-called vincular patterns, and they showed that many Mahonian statistics can be expressed as sums of vincular pattern occurrence statistics. STAT is one of such Mahonian statistics discoverd by them. In 2016, Kitaev and the third author introduced a words analogue of STAT and proved a joint equidistribution result involving two sextuple statistics on the whole set of words with fixed length and alphabet. Moreover, their computer experiments hinted at a finer involution on $R(w)$, the rearrangement class of a given word $w$. We construct such an involution in this paper, which yields a comparable joint equidistribution between two sextuple statistics over $R(w)$. Our involution builds on Burstein's involution and Foata-Schützenberger's involution that utilizes the celebrated RSK algorithm.

On the automorphism group of the m-coloured random graph
Let $R_m$ be the (unique) universal homogeneous $m$-edge-coloured countable complete graph ($m\ge2$), and $G_m$ its group of colour-preserving automorphisms. The group $G_m$ was shown to be simple by John Truss. We examine the automorphism group of $G_m$, and show that it is the group of permutations of $R_m$ which induce permutations on the colours, and hence an extension of $G_m$ by the symmetric group of degree $m$. We show further that the extension splits if and only if $m$ is odd, and in the case where $m$ is even and not divisible by~$8$ we find the smallest supplement for $G_m$ in its automorphism group. (This unpublished paper from 2007 is placed here because of renewed interest in the topic.)
Realizable Lists on a Class of Nonnegative Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A square matrix of order n with $n\geq 2$ is called permutative matrix when all its rows (up to the frst one) are permutations of precisely its frst row. In this paper recalling spectral results for partitioned into $2$-by-$2$ symmetric blocks matrices sufcient conditions on a given complex list to be the list of the eigenvalues of a nonnegative permutative matrix are given. In particular, we study NIEP and PNIEP when some complex elements into the considered lists have no zero imaginary part. Realizability regions for nonnegative permutative matrices are obtained.

Further results on complete permutation monomials over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we construct some new classes of complete permutation monomials with exponent $d=\frac{q^n-1}{q-1}$ using AGW criterion (a special case). This proves two recent conjectures in [Wuetal2] and extends some of these recent results to more general $n$'s.
Signed Countings of types B and D permutations and $t,q$-Euler Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is a classical result that the parity-balance of the number of weak excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number $E_n$, alternating in sign, if $n$ is odd (even, respectively). Josuat-Vergès obtained a $q$-analog of the results respecting the number of crossings of a permutation. One of the goals in this paper is to extend the results to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of types B and D, on the basis of the joint distribution in statistics excedances, crossings and the number of negative entries obtained by Corteel, Josuat-Vergès and Kim. Springer numbers are analogous Euler numbers that count the alternating permutations of type B, called snakes. Josuat-Vergès derived bivariate polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as generalized Euler numbers via successive $q$-derivatives and multiplications by $t$ on polynomials in $t$. The other goal in this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as the enumerators of the snakes with restrictions.

Multi-Symbol Forbidden Configurations
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $r$-matrix is a matrix with symbols in $\{0,1,\dots,r-1\}$. A matrix is simple if it has no repeated columns. Let the support of a matrix $F$, $\text{supp}(F)$ be the largest simple matrix such that every column in $\text{supp}(F)$ is in $F$. For a family of $r$-matrices $\mathcal{F}$, we define $\text{forb}(m,r,\mathcal{F})$ as the maximum number of columns of an $m$-rowed, $r$-matrix $A$ such that $F$ is not a row-column permutation of $A$ for all $F \in \mathcal{F}$. While many results exist for $r=2$, there are fewer for larger numbers of symbols. We expand on the field of forbidding matrices with $r$-symbols, introducing a new construction for lower bounds of the growth of $\text{forb}(m,r,\mathcal{F})$ (with respect to $m$) that is applicable to matrices that are either not simple or have a constant row. We also introduce a new upper bound restriction that helps with avoiding non-simple matrices, limited either by the asymptotic bounds of the support, or the size of the forbidden matrix, whichever is larger. Continuing the trend of upper bounds, we represent a well-known technique of standard induction as a graph, and use graph theory methods to obtain asymptotic upper bounds. With these techniques we solve multiple, previously unknown, asymptotic bounds for a variety of matrices. Finally, we end with block matrices, or matrices with only constant row, and give bounds for all possible cases.

Permutation polynomials, fractional polynomials, and algebraic curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we prove a conjecture by Li, Qu, Li, and Fu on permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_3^{2k}$. In addition, new examples and generalizations of some families of permutation polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_{3^k}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{5^k}$ are given. We also study permutation quadrinomials of type $Ax^{q(q-1)+1} + Bx^{2(q-1)+1} + Cx^{q} + x$. Our method is based on the investigation of an algebraic curve associated with a {fractional polynomial} over a finite field.

Double deficiencies of Dyck paths via the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection
We prove a recent conjecture by René Marczinzik involving certain statistics on Dyck paths that originate in the representation theory of Nakayama algebras of a linearly oriented quiver. We do so by analysing the effect of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection between Dyck paths and 321-avoiding permutations on these statistics, which was suggested by the result of a query issued to the online database FindStat.
Enumerations relating braid and commutation classes
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 74, December 2018, Pages 11-26 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an upper and lower bound for the number of reduced words for a permutation in terms of the number of braid classes and the number of commutation classes of the permutation. We classify the permutations that achieve each of these bounds, and enumerate both cases.

Tensor Models, Kronecker coefficients and Permutation Centralizer Algebras
Published in JHEP 11 (2017) 092 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the counting of observables and correlators for a 3-index tensor model are organized by the structure of a family of permutation centralizer algebras. These algebras are shown to be semi-simple and their Wedderburn-Artin decompositions into matrix blocks are given in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of symmetric groups. The matrix basis for the algebras also gives an orthogonal basis for the tensor observables which diagonalizes the Gaussian two-point functions. The centres of the algebras are associated with correlators which are expressible in terms of Kronecker coefficients (Clebsch-Gordan multiplicities of symmetric groups). The color-exchange symmetry present in the Gaussian model, as well as a large class of interacting models, is used to refine the description of the permutation centralizer algebras. This discussion is extended to a general number of colors $d$: it is used to prove the integrality of an infinite family of number sequences related to color-symmetrizations of colored graphs, and expressible in terms of symmetric group representation theory data. Generalizing a connection between matrix models and Belyi maps, correlators in Gaussian tensor models are interpreted in terms of covers of singular 2-complexes. There is an intriguing difference, between matrix and higher rank tensor models, in the computational complexity of superficially comparable correlators of observables parametrized by Young diagrams.

Loop-augmented forests and a variant of the Foulkes' conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A loop-augmented forest is a labeled rooted forest with loops on some of its roots. By exploiting an interplay between nilpotent partial functions and labeled rooted forests, we investigate the permutation action of the symmetric group on loop-augmented forests. Furthermore, we describe an extension of the Foulkes' conjecture and prove a special case. Among other important outcomes of our analysis are a complete description of the stabilizer subgroup of an idempotent in the semigroup of partial transformations and a generalization of the (Knuth-Sagan) hook length formula.

Schur-Concavity for Avoidance of Increasing Subsequences in Block-Ascending Permutations
Published in Electr. J. Comb. 24(4):P4.4, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For integers $a_1, \dots, a_n \ge 0$ and $k \ge 1$, let $\mathcal L_{k+2}(a_1, \dots, a_n)$ denote the set of permutations of $\{1, \dots, a_1+\dots+a_n\}$ whose descent set is contained in $\{a_1, a_1+a_2, \dots, a_1+\dots+a_{n-1}\}$, and which avoids the pattern $12\dots(k+2)$. We exhibit some bijections between such sets, most notably showing that $\# \mathcal L_{k+2} (a_1, \dots, a_n)$ is symmetric in the $a_i$ and is in fact Schur-concave. This generalizes a set of equivalences observed by Mei and Wang.

The Spectrum of Permutation Orbifolds

We study the spectrum of permutation orbifolds of 2d CFTs. We find examples where the light spectrum grows faster than Hagedorn, which is different from known cases such as symmetric orbifolds. We also describe how to compute their partition functions using a generalization of Hecke operators.

Constraint metric approximations and equations in groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce notions of a constraint metric approximation and of a constraint stability of a metric approximation. This is done in the language of group equations with coefficients. We give an example of a group which is not constraintly sofic. In building it, we find a sofic representation of free group with trivial commutant among extreme points of the convex structure on the space of sofic representations. We consider the centralizer equation in permutations as an instance of this new general setting. We characterize permutations $p\in S_k$ whose centralizer is stable in permutations with respect to the normalized Hamming distance, that is, a permutation which almost centralizes $p$ is near a centralizing permutation. This answers a question of Gorenstein-Sandler-Mills (1962).

On A Conjecture Regarding Permutations Which Destroy Arithmetic Progressions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hegarty conjectured for $n\neq 2, 3, 5, 7$ that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has a permutation which destroys all arithmetic progressions mod $n$. For $n\ge n_0$, Hegarty and Martinsson demonstrated that $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has an arithmetic-progression destroying permutation. However $n_0\approx 1.4\times 10^{14}$ and thus resolving the conjecture in full remained out of reach of any computational techniques. However, this paper using constructions modeled after those used by Elkies and Swaminathan for the case of $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ being prime, establish the conjecture in full. Furthermore our results do not rely on the fact that it suffices to study when $n<n_0$ and thus our results completely independent of the proof given by Hegarty and Martinsson.

Asymptotics of Pattern Avoidance in the Klazar Set Partition and Permutation-Tuple Settings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider asymptotics of set partition pattern avoidance in the sense of Klazar. Our main result derives the asymptotics of the number of set partitions avoiding a given set partition within an exponential factor, which leads to a classification of possible growth rates of set partition pattern classes. We further define a notion of permutation-tuple avoidance, which generalizes notions of Aldred et al. and the usual permutation pattern setting, and similarly determine the number of permutation-tuples avoiding a given tuple to within an exponential factor.
